Pop Fan Artist Spotlight: Gentle Dolphin ๐Ÿฌ

Howdy, Poptropicanos and welcome to a special edition of Pop Fan Artist Spotlight, featuring the works of our very own Gentle Dolphin!

I initially became aware of Gentle’s art in 2018, making this showcase a long-anticipated one; she’s actually been making Pop fanart on a regular basis since 2017. To begin, I would like to share one of my all-time favorite Poptropica fan videosโ€”the iconic PHB parody of the “Who Broke It?” scene from Parks and Recreation. ๐Ÿคฃ

Gentle Dolphin is consistently cooking up remarkable Poptropica artwork. Whether she’s illustrating her original character, designing costumes, or developing material for our April Fool’s pranks (which she has done a lot of btw!) her art creations are both charming and refined. Her artistic style has become quite distinctive to me, although she has explored various techniques on a few occasions. Take a moment to admire this beautiful gallery featuring some of her proudest creations from over the years. (Click for the full glory and titles!)

Alright, I just couldn’t help myself… Here are a couple of my personal favorites in addition if you weren’t done looking at great art yet. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I asked Gentle Dolphin to share her main sources of inspiration when designing her captivating pieces. Here is her response:

My normal art style takes inspiration from a few things: MLP G4, Dork Diaries, and anime. My Poptropica style mixes my usual coloring with Poptropica Worlds’ anatomy. When coming up with ideas, I like bouncing off of friends and family. Staying motivated can be a challenge, especially when you’re dealing with burnout. When I have low motivation to work on a piece, I’ll either work on a different piece or take a short break from creating (I’ll have a snack, clean up, play a game, or chat with someone).

I can certainly identify with some of those feelings about motivation, and it’s quite intriguing to witness how different fandoms influence the artwork she creates. Furthermore, Gentle Dolphin graciously offered some guidance for fellow artists. The floor is yours, GD!

Practice by knowing what and how to improve, experiment with new techniques, take 10-minute breaks every hour or so, search for constructive feedback, and have fun!

That’s some sound advice. Thanks to her for sharing that with us!

GD is active across a variety of platforms, including Instagram, DeviantArt, Tumblr, X, and her own website. Check out any of her pages to familiarize yourself even more with her work and consider the possibility of commissioning her. Seriously, each time I come across one of her artworks, I find myself in awe. It was quite a fun process to compile all of them as it allowed me to appreciate a wide array simultaneously. ๐Ÿคฉ

It’s not just me though; even the creators of Poptropica have taken notice of GD’s impressive designs and stylish flair. In September 2021, her Pumpkin Punk costume design (pictured in the collage) won a contest and was added to the game the following month.

On top of that, former Poptropica creator Jonathan Pitcher (notice the banner on his LinkedIn & X profiles ๐Ÿ˜‰), who we’ve highlighted and talked to before, mentioned that he once pitched the idea of creating an island inspired by her art style! Even though that idea didn’t come to fruition, it’s still an incredible recognition. ๐Ÿ‘

On the topic of art and GD, I should highlight that she is currently hosting an art collaboration in celebration of Pop’s 17th birthday. Tomorrow is the final day for submitting your entry, so if you have not yet participated, I recommend that you do so as soon as possible. This is a party that you’ll certainly want to be a part of! (Edit: You have until the end of the 29th!)

And that’s a wrap! Do you have any favorite artists that we have yet to showcase on the blog? I encourage you to submit your suggestions in the comments section below. I hope you found this Pop Fan Artist Spotlight as enjoyable as I did. A big thank you for reading as always and I’ll talk to you again very soon, pop on! ๐Ÿ€

The Poptropica Island Eras Tour ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธโœจ

Poptropica has given us a lot of adventures to go on over the years, since the game first began in 2007. To celebrate the gameโ€™s legacy, in this post weโ€™re going to go on a tour of its island eras! ๐Ÿ๏ธ

Compilation of islands on map by idk

This Poptropica Island Eras Tour, as some of you may have swiftly guessed, is inspired by another iconic Eras Tour โ€” the 2023 concert tour of pop queen Taylor Swift, whose music career has also spanned a similar timeframe as Poptropica over the years. An enchanting connection! โœจ

Speaking of Taylor, letโ€™s kick this off with one of her hits! The PHB came out with โ€œBackspaceโ€, a parody on โ€œBlank Spaceโ€, back in 2021 to petition for the return of old islands that have disappeared from the game since the end of Flash in 2020. Enjoy:

And now, let’s meet the Poptropica Island Eras…

The Classics (2007โ€“2013)

Welcome to the beginning! The Classics are the earliest islands to have popped onto the map. These OG islands from 2007โ€“2013 came with small screens and almost no sound. They were built with AS2, a Flash-based programming language, and are now only playable via Flashpoint.

Bonus Tracks โ€” these mini-quests from the Classics era were not quite islands, and a couple were released on consoles besides the computer.

Episodic (2014โ€“2015)

After years of solid standalone stories, Poptropica decided to shake things up by introducing episodic islands, breaking up an islandโ€™s story into a series of episodes. This Episodic era only lasted a couple years from 2014-2015, bringing shorter but more frequent releases.

Flashier (2013โ€“2016)

Starting from 2013 and encompassing the Episodic era, Poptropica used a newer (but now still outdated) Flash technology, AS3. These Flashier islands came with more sound and bigger screens. These adventures can be found in AS3 Flashpoint as well as Poptropica’s paid Steam bundle.

Worlds (2017โ€“2018)

With the looming demise of Flash, Poptropica Worlds was introduced as a new platform for the game’s future development. From 2017โ€“2018, Worlds brought a handful of 3D adventures. Sadly, it remained inactive until it was quietly discontinued in 2022, and is no longer playable.

Haxe (2019โ€“2023)

While Worlds went dormant, Poptropica continued updating its original platform. In 2020, Poptropica rolled out Haxe to replace the Flash build. This current era is characterized by islands that are shorter and simpler than in years past, along with a curious trend towards Roblox.

Like Taylor reclaiming her music by re-recording her previous songs, Poptropica has also since re-released some of their old islands after they were lost to Flash. The Flashier era and a few of the Classics are recovered on Steam, but we can only hope that more adventures join them someday. Until then, we also have the unofficial Flashpoint.

Anyway, that’s a wrap for the Poptropica Island Eras Tour! We hope you enjoyed this journey through Pop’s many storytelling eras of 16 years and counting. Share your favorite era with us in the comments! โœ๏ธ

Poptropica, it was enchanting to meet you.

Poptropica Portfolio: Lance Fry (Part 2!)

Hello Poptropicans! Welcome to a special addition to our Pop Portfolio series, in which we showcase the work of Pop Creators. This time, we’re featuring artist Lance Fry (whose portfolio we first saw in 2016)! ๐ŸŸ

Mocktropica – Poptropica Worldwide Headquarters

Fun fact: Lance Pitcher, the designer from Mocktropica Island, is inspired by Lance Fry and Jonathan Pitcher, both Poptropica artists!

Anyway, like his Mocktropica counterpart, Lance left Poptropica for a while following staff cuts in 2018. However, he returned this May and is currently working remotely, according to his LinkedIn. Along with this, he’s also added new pieces to his design portfolio, so let’s jump in!

Mystery Train – train cars

Lance appears to focus largely on background design, with only a few pieces featuring items and assets. He’s done the interiors for many areas, such as the cars in Mystery Train, Pop HQ in Mocktropica, and the Viking dining hall from Mystery of the Map.

While we often cover Poptropica’s storytelling or fun characters, we sometimes miss appreciating the stellar background art. Personally, I remember hanging out in different areas just to enjoy the environment. The color palettes are vibrant and synergize well, and everything fits the cartoony style while having impressive detail. Lance’s work certainly does not fall short in this! (Click to enlarge images!)

This updated portfolio is found on ArtStation, and most of the work comes from older islands. It’s nice to see familiar faces โ€” er, names, I guess โ€” among the Pop crew again!

Item Cards

To see more of Lance’s work, check out his ArtStation portfolio, as well as his older Behance page and our earlier Pop Portfolio.

Here’s to Lance’s success moving forward, and to more great art for Pop! The game has certainly inspired and motivated many new creatives.

Until next time!
