Pop 5: Ranking the Islands of 2008

Yoohoo Poptropicans, long time no speak. Yes, itโ€™s true โ€“ LJ hath returned! I feel like Iโ€™ve been gone so long that I donโ€™t even know how to write anymore, but bear with me. โ˜ ๏ธ

How many islands have been released in the last half year? None? Okay, so I havenโ€™t missed anything. Speaking of islands, lately Iโ€™ve been reminiscing back to when they were actually good, ahem ahem. So today Iโ€™d like yโ€™all to accompany me in this ride of nostalgia as I rank the islands that first popped up on the map nearly 15 years ago โ€“ the five islands of 2008. If you donโ€™t know, this includes Time Tangled, 24 Carrot, Super Power, Spy, and Nabooti. Do you feel old yet?

Disclaimer: This is not a full review for each island, so each analysis will be kept brief.

#5: 24 Carrot Island ๐Ÿฅ•

At the unfortunate placement of 5th, we have 24 Carrot Island โ€“ originally released on June 6, 2008. Not at all do I think this island is bad on its own, but I donโ€™t think itโ€™s up to par when compared to the other islands from this year. Being one of the first islands in the game, it is noticeably simpler than most. However, we must remember that simple does not necessarily mean low-quality.

Itโ€™s no secret this island debuted the single most iconic character of the entire game, Dr. Hare, so we have that to thank it for. Another thing about 24 Carrot island I love is that it feels so quintessentially โ€œPoptropicaโ€ (if that makes sense). Obviously itโ€™s held up after all this time since itโ€™s one of the only old islands thatโ€™s still playable from the map.

#4: Time Tangled Island โฑ๏ธ

In 4th place, originally released on April 15, 2008, is the transtemporal quest Time Tangled Island! I like that this island is very educational in an organic way, which at its core is what Poptropica is all about. I enjoy not only traveling to different parts of the world, but in different time periods as well. It really serves to amp up the satisfaction factor.

Itโ€™s not the most original concept, nor does it feature any memorable characters, but itโ€™s definitely fun to play through. There is also something to be said for the amount of brain power needed to complete it which is something that todayโ€™s islands seem to lack in my opinion.

#3: Nabooti Island ๐Ÿ’Ž

Next is none other than Nabooti Island, which was released at the very end of the year on December 11. At one point, this was actually one of my all-time favorites, and for good reason. The adventurous nature of this island is exhilarating and the scenery is quite beautiful for this time in Poptropica (when most scenes were a bit bland in my view). Another fun tidbit about this island that Iโ€™m not sure many newer players are aware of is the cool cell phone trick used to get various costume parts by dialing specific numbers. (refer to the trivia section in our island guide)

What this island is missing, though, is an array of interesting characters โ€“ or even at least one or two for that matter. So for all of these reasons considered, Nabooti sits smack dab in the middle of this ranking at 3rd place.

#2: Super Power Island ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Where do I even begin with Super Power Island? I can almost say for certain that everybody likes this island to some capacity. What kid wouldnโ€™t want to become a superhero and defeat bad guys for a day? This island, albeit uncomplicated, is a super entertaining classic. If you donโ€™t agree, Iโ€™ll have to respect your incorrect opinion.

Super Power (released on July 24, 2008 โ€“ just two days before the PHB was born!) manages to find a perfect balance of being tough to beat while still remaining enjoyable and not too stressful. (Iโ€™m looking at you Virus Hunterโ€ฆ) The amount of creativity spawned from this island (i.e. fanart) alone is a testament to how good it really was while it was around. Characters like Betty Jetty and Ned Noodlehead remain popular to this day and the rest of the villains get their fair share in the spotlight as well.

It was a super close call to determine which island deserved to be crowned my top island of 2008, but in the end the coronation goes toโ€ฆ

#1: Spy Island ๐Ÿ”

Released on September 9, 2008 was Poptropicaโ€™s 6th quest to grace the map, Spy Island. Like time travel and superheroism, espionage is another perfect theme for an island, and it was done very well! All of the gadgets were really fun to utilize (my favorite being the chameleon suit), and although the grappling bowtie could be a little frustrating, it was fun to just monkey around with whenever you needed a little break from the actual island.

Moments like sneaking around the dogs, memorizing the ingredients to become a chef, and the snatching of Director Dโ€™s wig have lived in my head rent-free for the past decade and a half. And overall, the story and plot of this island was *chefโ€™s kiss*. At the time of its release, Spy Island definitely had the most complex story and the most challenging tasks. This island was surely a pioneer for the many exciting islands yet to come and it certainly made its mark on the game. Thereโ€™s even a printable sheet for the decoder kit used in the island, which is rare for any item in the game! How cool is that?

Ah, sweet sweet memories. 2008 was a pretty good year for island releases, and it was a pleasure to talk about them for a little bit. Most of them are gone, but they will never be forgotten.

Did you get a chance to play any of these islands? Which one was your favorite and least favorite? Leave your rankings and any other thoughts in the comments section below.

Iโ€™ll hopefully talk to all of you soon. Pop on!

Clubhouse Tour: Silver Shell ๐Ÿก

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by Silver ShellEnjoy!

Hello, Poptropicans! It’s Silver Shell, and today I’m showing you my own Clubhouse Tour!

…Yikes! How are you here so early? Oof, I need an alarm clock…

Holy Hare, I’m still in my pajamas! Give me a second so I can try to look presentable.

Ah, there we go! Now I can get on with my day. Now, what to do next? Well, I’ll show you my bedroom.

Here’s my room, Poptropicans! Pretty full, I know, but I like it. I change out the decorations based on the time of year. Now why don’t you keep looking over there for a second while I, um, do stuff.

Hey! I thought I told you to stay over there! …No, I wasn’t reading to my unicorn. You misunderstood the situation. Moving on…

Here’s the kitchen, guys! Help yourselves to the fridge while I make myself something to eat. I’ve got just about everything, but I’m still waiting on the pizza I ordered.

Here’s the ultimate gamer zone!! Well, it will look more ultimate once I get a membership and get all that cool high-tech stuff, but this’ll do. Right now my favorite game is something called Legendary Swords. You should try it!

Yes… Yes… YES! I won! Whew, that was tough. Anyway, I — what is that glowing thing?

What on Planet Poptropica is that??!! That’s right out of my video game! Hide! …Wait, that’s weird. It has regular arms and legs. That’s not a robot!

Ohh… she’s a fellow gamer! Hey there! Nice costume, by the way. Sure fooled me. Want to play Legendary Swords?

Click, click, click… Come on… Yes! Won again! Nice playing with you, but I have a clubhouse tour to lead.

Anyway, here’s my pet area, living room, and schoolwork section. It’s a nice place to hang out, if you ask me. Speaking of pet areas, where’s my puppy?

There you are, Lav! This is Lavender, a rare species of Labrador Retriever that has light purple fur. She loves summer, swimming, getting petted, and wearing hats.

Moving on, past the front door, we have… Oh hey! My pizza’s here! Hmm, I’m not sure I meant “as big as I am” when I said “extra large,” but hey, I’m not complaining.

You know what? I’m in the mood for some exercise. I’ll save the pizza for later…

….eleven, twelve, thirteen… Oof! Nice work, Silver Shell! Florian “Flashy” Fosbury would be jealous.

I also love basketball! I’ll get some practice while we’re here. Slam dunk!

Wow, all this exercise is certainly making me hungry. PIZZA TIME!

Hm, doesn’t quite fit in my fridge… oh well, this’ll have to do for now. I wonder how much this thing costs, being bigger than me… *looks at receipt* OH MY POP! Oh man, next time I’ll order the medium size. Anyway, have a slice or something.

Oh, I have one more thing to show you. You’re gonna love this.

Behold, the legendary Museum of Silver Shell! Similar to the Baron’s Airship, this is a room full of tokens and souvenirs from almost every island, and I’m still adding to it! However, this stuff is not for sale. If you see anything that you’re not sure which island it represents, be sure to ask in the comments, and give me suggestions of what other islands I should represent!

That’s that, folks. Hope you enjoyed my Clubhouse Tour!! Feel free to pop by anytime to help me finish up my pizza. My username is Seraphim22. Don’t expect my clubhouse to stay the same though; it’s ever-changing, like all things!

Have a Poptastic day, and happy Grapple-Pap!

Pop Nonstop,

Crusades, cozy couture, and more

Howdy doodly Poptropicanos, it’s LJ with more Poptropica current events!

First up, it’s the return of The Baron’s Crusade side quest! It was back in October when we first traveled to uncharted territories with the sly sky pirate. Now, it’s back if you missed out and is available to all players.

Head on over to the Baron’s Cabin of Curiosities to begin your quest and get a chance to visit her super secret clubhouse. It sounds like we Poptropicans have an adventure waiting for us.

Moving on, two more member gifts have made their way into every member’s inventory: Cabin Cozy PJ and Crystal Couture. Well, I recognized Crystal Couture and it turns out the shawl is a recolor of the Winter Girl 2 outfit that appeared in the store some time ago. ๐Ÿ˜› Anyway, only three more gifts to go!

As usual these days, the creators have shared some more lovely art by fans on their Instagram story. I’m always happy to see the Poptropica creators recognizing their fans and interacting with them by commenting and liking artists’ posts.

On Twitter, Poptropica decided to call out Thinknoodles to get his opinion on Goofball Island in this tweet below:

It’s random but I’m totally here for it. His Poptropica content was a big part of a lot of our childhoods and it seems the current social media manager for Poptropica is aware of his previous presence as well. I wonder if he’s going to make a playthrough or walkthrough video. What do you figure he’ll think about Goofball Island? ๐Ÿค”

Lastly, all items in Poptropica’s Zazzle storeโ€” from stickers to masks to hoodiesโ€” have all been discounted 15%-25% off!

What a great way to get in the holiday spirit! Get your favorite pieces of merchandise as soon as you can to not miss out on these deals. Not sure which item to get? Maybe you can read some of our reviews which Poptropica linked in their blog post.

And with that said, today’s news has concluded. Thank you all for reading and I’ll talk to you guys in the next one. Pop on!

The Members’ Lair of Thieves ๐Ÿฅท๐Ÿซ

Howdy Poptropicans, it’s LJ here.

Let’s start with the most exciting news of the day. Remember that question mark on the Haxe map yesterday? It’s now been replaced by Arabian Nights, Episode 2: Lair of Thieves!

It took over a year since we got the first episode, but hey, better late than never right? As of now, it’s exclusive to members only, but hopefully soon it’ll be available for all players.

In other in-game news, members have been gifted with another wintery item as part of the 12 Days of Member Gifts: a snowflake costume, and it’s different from last year’s. โ„๏ธ How n-ice.

Onto Poptropica’s social media presence, the creators’ Instagram story showcases more artwork by fans (including a couple pieces by me). Show these artists some love. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Also on Instagram, the creators shared this funny video pointing out the toxic traits of some of Poptropica’s most prominent villains. Kidnapping seems to be a common theme… not cool. Don’t kidnap people.

Lastly, this short video (first seen on TikTok) was posted over on Poptropica’s YouTube channel and actually evokes some serious nostalgia with going to the computer lab to play Poptropica and all. Anybody else’s computer lab look like this in elementary school?

Welp, that’s what’s popping for now. Keep reading to stay up to date on all things Poptropica and don’t forget to participate in Community Creations this month. Talk to you guys in the next one! Pop on!

New costumes! New gifts! New… island?!

Howdy Poptropicans, it’s LJ here with some celebratory updates!

In Adventure Outfitters, lots of festive outfits and clubhouse items ornament the room. On the left, we have a snowman costume for 300 credits, a holiday light outfit for 375, a candy cane costume for 300, and a mistletoe bushel for 75 just over the doorway.

Over to the right, a holiday bauble costume and two elf costumes are available for 300 credits each. Also, snowflake wall decals are for sale for 150 credits, a penguin stuffie for 75, and a snowboard and Santa mug both for 100.

In the middle section, a Santa outfit and an abominable snowman suit are notable new additions. Here is the rest of the current stock (prices range from 150-350 credits and 7/24 outfits are members-only):

As for the 12 Days of Member Gifts, we’ve been getting several little merry items to amp up our holiday cheer over the last few days. They include a light-up sweater outfit, a snowman buddy, poinsettia flowers, and three adorable animal mugs (deer, penguin, and white fox). What do you think of this month’s gifts so far?

Once again the time has come to brainstorm some ideas for the monthly costume contest! You can submit up to 3 designs anywhere from now until Sunday, December 19 at 8pm PST.

The fact that it takes place every month really gives a lot of players the chance to have their dream come true of getting their outfit idea into the game! ๐Ÿฅณ Just don’t forget to use #MyPoptropicaCostume and tag the Pop creators if you’re entering via Instagram. If not, you can use their submissions page. Get more details here.

On Instagram, the creators shared some amazing fan creations on their story which I always love to see! There’s so much talent. Check ’em out:

Also on Poptropica’s Instagram, it looks like the creators could be hinting at a new island arriving! At least I hope so (and not a hint for some random mini-quest). It seems unlikely with Goofball Island only being released a minute ago that this possible new quest would be the anticipated Secret of the Jade Scarab, which was the third winner in the Create Your Dream Island contest from earlier this year.

Poptropica’s reply to one of the comments seems to tease the likelihood of an old island making a comeback. (screenshot below) I would be SO thrilled if that were true. It’d be a great Christmas present, right? Drop your guess of which island could be returning in the comments below, hehe. ๐Ÿ˜‰

And that wraps up today’s news. Lots of stuff going on this time of year. Be sure to keep an eye out for more news here on the PHB. Thank you for reading as always and pop on!
