Pop 5: Ranking the Islands of 2013

Yoohoo Poptropicans, it’s LJ here. Today I want to turn the clocks back 10 years and revisit the islands of 2013 with a ranking to celebrate the anniversary. I can’t believe it’s been an entire decade!

I have an inkling my list will differ from most people’s opinions so I’m very excited to get into it and start discussing with you all. Let’s pop in.

(Disclaimer: This is not a full review for each island, so each analysis will be kept brief. Links to the synopses will be included throughout the commentary if you need more context.)

#5: Mocktropica Island ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ

Mocktropica Island was released for all players in January of 2014, but was first available to members on December 19, 2013, so it’s technically a 2013 and a 2014 island. With that said, I’ll be including Mocktropica in this list since 2014 has plenty of islands to rank as it is.

Now, don’t get me wrong โŽฏ Mocktropica is a pretty neat island. The concept is wicked cool, and it was executed nicely in my opinion. I’m one to appreciate a good meta reference here and there, so without surprise, an island filled with them at every turn totally appealed to me. Initially, I found this island to be pretty cool and very funny. It’s not so bizarre like Timmy Failure Island, but I think it’s just zany enough to appeal to most players of all ages.

The reason I rank it last on my list, however, is because I’m pretty sure this is the island I’ve played the least from this year, so I don’t remember it as much as the other ones at this point. Plus, the main joke of the island โŽฏ “Poptropica is under new management, and it’s falling apart at the seams!” โŽฏ so heavily resonates with the current state of the game today, and it just hits too hard. It’s no longer tongue-in-cheek humor and retrospectively thinking, it just feels like a sad foreshadowing of what was to come.

#4: Night Watch Island ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Night Watch Island was the first official island released in 2013, and it was first available to members on February 21. It was released for everyone the next month on March 14.

I’ll be honest, Night Watch was never the most entertaining island (gameplay wise) for me back then. The back and forth travelling felt a little too redundant in this island specifically, and with being released right after Zomberry, this one didn’t feel as epic. The things I do like about the island, though, are enough to redeem it and to not put it in last place.

It was pretty cool having a job in this one, and although you’re pretty much in solitude almost the entire time, it doesn’t feel lonely. I think that has something to do with all of the signs, toys, pets, robot dummies etc. all around you in the mall. I also can’t forget to mention little Eddie, the coral snake. Somehow, he steals the show for me, and I think he’s hilarious.

Also, I just really like shopping and malls in general, and I’m practically obsessed with Scooby-Doo โŽฏ so I greatly appreciated the reference at the end when the culprit says “And I would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for this meddling security guard!” Speaking of references, there are loads of them throughout Nightwatch to other Poptropica islands & characters (similar to Mocktropica), but also to real life stores & movies as well! What the island doesn’t bring in gameplay it definitely brings in super fun reference hunting.

#3: Back Lot Island ๐ŸŽฌ

Back Lot Island came out for members on April 4, 2013 and for non-members later in the month on April 25, 2013.

This island was fantastic to me since I’ve always been interested in movie & television magic. Every time I played it as a kid, I really felt like I was making a movie. There is a bit of that back and forth travelling like I mentioned in Night Watch, but I don’t think it’s as bad in this island. To be honest, I actually enjoyed driving the go cart in the Grand Majestic Studios lot (in aerial view) and running up & down Sunset Blvd. As fun as a mall can be, I think the scenery in this island is even more captivating.

It was also very satisfying seeing all of your work come together when the movie plays in the theater at the end โŽฏ although it didn’t make much sense to me. ๐Ÿ˜‚ On top of all that, the paparazzi photographing me like I was a celebrity when I first landed on the island gave me a huge ego boost. Just kidding!

#2: Zomberry Island ๐ŸงŸ

Zomberry Island was first released on December 19, 2012 for members but released for everyone a month later on January 10, 2013. Because 2012 is the year with the most islands to rank already, I’ll be including it in the 2013 list instead โŽฏ kind of like I did with Mocktropica.

I recognize that I may be a little biased with this one, but I don’t think it takes away from the greatness that this island is. Zomberry is the first island I played with my little cousins when I introduced them to the game. It was a proud moment. I’ve lost count of the number of times I played through this apocalyptic adventure (and watched the trailer before its release) so it’s super nostalgic.

The atmosphere is dark and chilling, but the characters are quite colorful despite that. This is a nice contrast that makes for a nice setting. Samuel Brains’ look is a whole vibe and DJ Saturday Night is just as about iconic as Shark Boy Guy in my opinion. Abe may not be as quirky and lively as the others, but he’s certainly memorable, nonetheless.

For me, Zomberry definitely deserves the silver. In fact, it was almost first but that honor went to… ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅ

#1: Virus Hunter Island ๐Ÿงฌ

Virus Hunter Island was released for members on August 29, 2013, and on September 26, 2013 for everybody else.

I’ll admit, the environment isn’t exactly the cure for queasiness (and I imagine anybody with anatomophobia โŽฏ or anything similar โŽฏ would really not like this one), but it is very unique; I’ll give it that. It’s almost otherworldly even with-it taking place inside a body and all.

Virus Hunter was notorious for many years to be filled with irritating glitches. I remember experiencing some myself, but luckily it wasn’t anything more than any other island, so for that I feel pretty lucky. In addition to the glitches, I think the island was pretty long and challenging as it is; I’m sure a lot of us got stressed out at the time. You’re probably even wondering why this is my top pick of the year.

Well, now that we see what the game has come to โŽฏ with islands that feel more suited towards kids who are still learning their shapes and colors โŽฏ that stress is sorely missed. I really want new challenging islands like this again! This one was overall very fun, adventurous, and exciting to me. A very grand experience I must say.

That concludes my ranking of these islands that are now ten years old. ๐Ÿฅบ It was bittersweet writing this one, I won’t lie. I’m the type of person who often gets emotional about the past and Poptropica is no exception. Anyway, what is YOUR ranking of the Poptropica islands of 2013? Please share your lists with me! Commentary or no commentary, I’d love to read them.

Pop on!

App, Ghost Story Island, Night Watch Island

Great Scott! Pets have arrived on the Poptropica app!

What’s popping, Poptropicans? Blake here, with some Poptropican news!

First off, happy Back to the Future Day! It was 30 years ago today that Marty McFly, Doc Brown and that other third girl arrived on this very day in the future!

Poptropica even made a graphic to celebrate, featuring a Poptropican-ized Marty (which I’d love to have available as a costume, by the way).ย A couple of PHB authors also made graphics for the occasion, featuring the DeLorean parked on Night Watch Island. Check them out!

Next, the Creators have announced that the Poptropica app users can now unlock mobile-exclusive pets!ย For $0.99, you can pick up the Pets Pack which features a cat, dog, and owl (all wearable features, not followers).

Also, the Import Your Desktop Lookย feature is now here for iOS and Android users, as well as Timmy Failure Island which is available as a free download!

Plus, Poptropica tweeted a random bit ofย Ghost Story Island trivia: the voice who creepily asks, “Are you looking for someone?” is Creator Dr. Lange, whose Poptropican is seen onย Virus Hunter Island!

Well, that’s all for now! Stay popping, Poptropicans! I’ve gotta go back to 1985, or else this old guy who dragged me to a mall is going to die! Wow, that sounds kind of dark when it’s taken out of context…

Bonus Items, Contests, Cryptids Island, Daily Pop, New Islands, Night Watch Island, Sneak Peeks

CYDI runner-up (Fashion Crisis), more music men, and possible Night Watch book!

Whatย isnโ€™tย happening in the world of Poptropica? Prepare to have your mind blown with all the new things happening in the Poptropica universe!ย ๐Ÿ˜€

Runner-up #2 in the CYDI contest

The nextย runner-up of the Create Your Dream Island contest, without further ado, is…

Fashion Crisis Island!

Now, even though I’m not that big on fashion ๐Ÿ˜† , I still am pretty impressed and pleased that this girl won. I’ve never heard of the idea being used, and the prospect of an island based on the costumizing feature is pretty smart —

When you’re on Fashion Crisis Island, you must recover a stolen line of clothes for a very famous designer right before an important show.

Is it just me, or is it strange that all the winners up until now have been girls? I’m excited to see a boy’s idea, but in the meantime, I’d like to congratulate Elsa W. of Illinoisย — or Bronzeย Fox — for the awesome idea and the impressive ranking. ๐Ÿ˜€ Here’s why the Creators liked the idea:

Costumizing is one of the most popular things to do on Poptropica, and yet we’ve never made an Island based entirely around using the Costumizer. Elsa’s idea presented a lot of opportunities to let players create new costumes. It was also set in the the 1940s, which we haven’t done before, and featured some famous fashion icons as characters.

More music men

Kyle Fox now has a Soundcloud, and he’s uploaded his few but wholesome tracks that he’s made for Poptropica. I want to give him a shout out for all the music work that slips by as Jeff Heim’s — I personally love the MFB theme. ๐Ÿ˜€

Another unknown composer for the theme and sound effects of the Forgotten Islands app has now been uncovered: Bob Baffy! The theme sounds great as do the sound effects, and I hope he might do more soundtracks for Poptropica in the future. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Jeff Heim recently posted a Demo Reel for his work on Poptropica, including a new Villain theme for the island Super Power. Sounds awesome!

Mythology SUI offers easier River Styx

As mentioned the recent PCB post, the upcoming Mythology Island SUI is going to have an easier River Styx scene (check it out here), and I immediately had to check and see what it was like. Well, they weren’t lying — all you do is jump over an alligator and you’re home free!

easyriverstyxI wonder if they’ve made any of the other hard parts of the island easier — maybe the red eyed snake game and the Aphrodite test. Either way, I’m happy! ๐Ÿ˜›

Who is Catie?

There’s a question that remains a mystery, and that question is “Who is Catie?”. Written on a wall on Virus Hunter Island, we see “Catie was here” scribbled onto it. Designers often do this sort of thing in Poptropica – for example, in Mocktropica, written on the wall in the Poptropica Headquarters is “Nasan was here”. Nasan Hardcastle is a designer for Poptropica, and he wrote it there. So who is Catie? An unknown designer? There are multiple possible answers.

Catherine Prentice is a writer for Pearson, but it seems unlikely that she would be designing anything. There’s also Catherine Gilliland, a person who strangely liked a Poptropica tour on YouTube, and that was pretty much it. Who do you think Catie is? We may never know…

And did you notice the view count on the tour? Over 5 million hits!

Night Watchย book may be coming soon

Here’s some forewarning — a written book for Night Watch Islandย may be coming soon. Why? First, I don’t think that they will be releasing books for all of the islands — just a select few that have a strong enough story and cast of characters to work with. For sure, Night Watch Island has a pretty good story to begin with, but I’m not just going out on a limb like that. You guys know I wouldn’t do that. ;p

Around mid-2012, around the time that Night Watch Island was being made, multiple preliminary sketches for the illustrations for the book pertaining to Cryptids Island were posted to the Daily Pop. Around the same time, a sketch looking very similar to the drawings for Cryptids Island was posted — showing the rare Cat Burglar costumeย being worn and the Poptropican posing in multiple positions. I have a hunch that the picture was actually some preliminary sketches for a new book pertaining to Night Watch, where a Cat Burglar contributes to the plot. What do you think?

Astro-Knights Island, Lunar Colony Island, Night Watch Island, Vampire's Curse Island

Going left of Main Street

Some of you may have seen the Roman soldier on top of the tourist center on Shark Tooth Island, as mentioned in Sam’s post last weekย – but in case you missed the updates in that post, there’s more to the Shark Tooth shenanigans. If you go left of Main Street, you’ll find yourself on a small island with a wrecked ship in the background that definitely wasn’t there before. And that’s not all! Check out some of these other new places on other islands, also to the left of Main Street:

There’s a floating car on Night Watch, a smoldering crop circle on Astro-Knights, a barbed wire fence and some PASE boxes on Lunar Colony, and a plain wooden fence on Vampire’s Curse. Those seem to be all the ones so far, but do comment if you find another. ๐Ÿ˜›

All of these areas are pretty small, and they seem to serve no purpose as of now – my guess is that they might be used as ad spaces in the future, but who knows? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Back Lot Island, Membership, Night Watch Island

The (2nd) First 10 to Save the Mall – take 1, take 2, take 3!

(Scroll down the post for news on the members’ Back Lot Island gear pack!)

Something for the Non-Members:ย For the first time ever, the creators have announced the first 10 Non-Members to complete the latest island. Not only that, it is the first time that the “Top 10 Finishers” has been presented in this new 1-photo format.

Top 10 Night Watch Public Launch

Something for the Members:ย The new Members Only suit for Back Lot Island has been released! The Director Costume! Looks like it’s time to make this summer’s big hit blockbuster!

I will admit, I love yelling action and cut and pretending I’m J.J. Abrams just as much as the next guy but… I do wonder where in the world are the other two items, the Silent Treatment power, and the Clapperboard item? I guess only time will tell. Let’s hope that we see the next two items and a release date for Back Lot Island some time soon!

Edit: The Clapboard item has now been released! Thanks to Thing 1 for the heads up. When you activate it you yell “Take 1”ย  “Take 2”ย  and “Take 3” and slap the Clapboard together. Now we just need the final power!

Yet another edit: The final power has been released: the Silent Treatment power! You can now turn the world of Poptropica into a black-and-white world of film history with the click of a button!

Aaaand… cut!
