Pop 5: Ranking the Islands of 2013

Yoohoo Poptropicans, it’s LJ here. Today I want to turn the clocks back 10 years and revisit the islands of 2013 with a ranking to celebrate the anniversary. I can’t believe it’s been an entire decade!

I have an inkling my list will differ from most people’s opinions so I’m very excited to get into it and start discussing with you all. Let’s pop in.

(Disclaimer: This is not a full review for each island, so each analysis will be kept brief. Links to the synopses will be included throughout the commentary if you need more context.)

#5: Mocktropica Island 🖥️

Mocktropica Island was released for all players in January of 2014, but was first available to members on December 19, 2013, so it’s technically a 2013 and a 2014 island. With that said, I’ll be including Mocktropica in this list since 2014 has plenty of islands to rank as it is.

Now, don’t get me wrong ⎯ Mocktropica is a pretty neat island. The concept is wicked cool, and it was executed nicely in my opinion. I’m one to appreciate a good meta reference here and there, so without surprise, an island filled with them at every turn totally appealed to me. Initially, I found this island to be pretty cool and very funny. It’s not so bizarre like Timmy Failure Island, but I think it’s just zany enough to appeal to most players of all ages.

The reason I rank it last on my list, however, is because I’m pretty sure this is the island I’ve played the least from this year, so I don’t remember it as much as the other ones at this point. Plus, the main joke of the island ⎯ “Poptropica is under new management, and it’s falling apart at the seams!” ⎯ so heavily resonates with the current state of the game today, and it just hits too hard. It’s no longer tongue-in-cheek humor and retrospectively thinking, it just feels like a sad foreshadowing of what was to come.

#4: Night Watch Island 🛍️

Night Watch Island was the first official island released in 2013, and it was first available to members on February 21. It was released for everyone the next month on March 14.

I’ll be honest, Night Watch was never the most entertaining island (gameplay wise) for me back then. The back and forth travelling felt a little too redundant in this island specifically, and with being released right after Zomberry, this one didn’t feel as epic. The things I do like about the island, though, are enough to redeem it and to not put it in last place.

It was pretty cool having a job in this one, and although you’re pretty much in solitude almost the entire time, it doesn’t feel lonely. I think that has something to do with all of the signs, toys, pets, robot dummies etc. all around you in the mall. I also can’t forget to mention little Eddie, the coral snake. Somehow, he steals the show for me, and I think he’s hilarious.

Also, I just really like shopping and malls in general, and I’m practically obsessed with Scooby-Doo ⎯ so I greatly appreciated the reference at the end when the culprit says “And I would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for this meddling security guard!” Speaking of references, there are loads of them throughout Nightwatch to other Poptropica islands & characters (similar to Mocktropica), but also to real life stores & movies as well! What the island doesn’t bring in gameplay it definitely brings in super fun reference hunting.

#3: Back Lot Island 🎬

Back Lot Island came out for members on April 4, 2013 and for non-members later in the month on April 25, 2013.

This island was fantastic to me since I’ve always been interested in movie & television magic. Every time I played it as a kid, I really felt like I was making a movie. There is a bit of that back and forth travelling like I mentioned in Night Watch, but I don’t think it’s as bad in this island. To be honest, I actually enjoyed driving the go cart in the Grand Majestic Studios lot (in aerial view) and running up & down Sunset Blvd. As fun as a mall can be, I think the scenery in this island is even more captivating.

It was also very satisfying seeing all of your work come together when the movie plays in the theater at the end ⎯ although it didn’t make much sense to me. 😂 On top of all that, the paparazzi photographing me like I was a celebrity when I first landed on the island gave me a huge ego boost. Just kidding!

#2: Zomberry Island 🧟

Zomberry Island was first released on December 19, 2012 for members but released for everyone a month later on January 10, 2013. Because 2012 is the year with the most islands to rank already, I’ll be including it in the 2013 list instead ⎯ kind of like I did with Mocktropica.

I recognize that I may be a little biased with this one, but I don’t think it takes away from the greatness that this island is. Zomberry is the first island I played with my little cousins when I introduced them to the game. It was a proud moment. I’ve lost count of the number of times I played through this apocalyptic adventure (and watched the trailer before its release) so it’s super nostalgic.

The atmosphere is dark and chilling, but the characters are quite colorful despite that. This is a nice contrast that makes for a nice setting. Samuel Brains’ look is a whole vibe and DJ Saturday Night is just as about iconic as Shark Boy Guy in my opinion. Abe may not be as quirky and lively as the others, but he’s certainly memorable, nonetheless.

For me, Zomberry definitely deserves the silver. In fact, it was almost first but that honor went to… 🥁🥁🥁

#1: Virus Hunter Island 🧬

Virus Hunter Island was released for members on August 29, 2013, and on September 26, 2013 for everybody else.

I’ll admit, the environment isn’t exactly the cure for queasiness (and I imagine anybody with anatomophobia ⎯ or anything similar ⎯ would really not like this one), but it is very unique; I’ll give it that. It’s almost otherworldly even with-it taking place inside a body and all.

Virus Hunter was notorious for many years to be filled with irritating glitches. I remember experiencing some myself, but luckily it wasn’t anything more than any other island, so for that I feel pretty lucky. In addition to the glitches, I think the island was pretty long and challenging as it is; I’m sure a lot of us got stressed out at the time. You’re probably even wondering why this is my top pick of the year.

Well, now that we see what the game has come to ⎯ with islands that feel more suited towards kids who are still learning their shapes and colors ⎯ that stress is sorely missed. I really want new challenging islands like this again! This one was overall very fun, adventurous, and exciting to me. A very grand experience I must say.

That concludes my ranking of these islands that are now ten years old. 🥺 It was bittersweet writing this one, I won’t lie. I’m the type of person who often gets emotional about the past and Poptropica is no exception. Anyway, what is YOUR ranking of the Poptropica islands of 2013? Please share your lists with me! Commentary or no commentary, I’d love to read them.

Pop on!

When in quarantine, play Poptropica

Hey Poptropicans. By now, you’ve probably heard of the coronavirus pandemic sweeping over the world, causing school shutdowns, closing businesses, and more. With life on lockdown, why not turn to Poptropica to pass the time?

Like the postcard? You can download Virus Hunter Island printable postcards from Poptropica and send them to your friends!

Real talk, though: we haven’t heard from Poptropica in about a month, and with all of this going on, Poptropica Creators may have their workflow disrupted, too. That could mean a lull in activity for Poptropica, despite earlier promises about updates for this year. We’ll have to wait and see.

Anyway, whether the virus has been on your radar for months, or has just started to affect your area in the past couple weeks, at least one thing is clear: staying away from crowds helps keep you and everyone safe.

The outside world may be falling apart, but on the flip side, the online world is thriving. Here on the PHB, we’re bringing you recommendations for enjoying the best of Poptropica while under quarantine. There’s plenty to do inside!

Can you stomach the comics? 🦠

One obvious island comes to mind: Virus Hunter. In this island released in 2013, your mission is to locate the person harboring a dangerous new virus, then enter his body to remove the disease before it spreads! There couldn’t be a more relatable adventure in these trying times, and whether it’s your first time playing or you want to revisit it, the PHB has a guide for you.

Before the island came out all those years ago, Poptropica created a six-page comic called Pandemic Panic as a prelude to Virus Hunter Island. Check it out below, and read tons more official Poptropica comics on the PHB!

More island adventures, for all the benchers 🏝

Besides Virus Hunter, Poptropica is also filled with lots of other great island adventures to play. If staying at home is starting to feel like jail, try busting out of prison on Escape From Pelican Rock Island. If you miss large gatherings full of people, mingle with the cosplayers on PoptropiCon Island. Or if you prefer to strike it out on your own, embrace the solitude of Survival Island. There’s something for everyone, and we have all the guides you’ll need!

Here’s an open secret: the islands currently on the map aren’t the only ones you can play. With the Old Island Directory, you can play about 30 more old school islands, which Poptropica had taken down from the official game due to the older technology causing bugs. Since Flash is going down, now’s the time to play them before they’re gone for good!

Create or compete, staying upbeat 👩‍🎨

Even beyond the decades of islands, Poptropica still has a fair amount of fun to offer. The Photo Booth is back, your club house could use a refreshed design, and worlds are waiting to be made on Realms. And while you’re at it, maybe you’ll enjoy giving your character a new look, too!

Meeting up in real life may not be a great idea these days, but you can still hang out with friends online! Drop by the arcade at the same time and you can play games like Star Link together, or head in solo and find new buds. You can also challenge yourself on solo games like Blaster Attack.

And last but not least, join in on the PHB’s Community Creations challenge! This month’s theme is Hobbies, and all this downtime is a great opportunity to explore some (within health precautions, of course). Whatever the hobby, you have until the end of March to capture it for us Poptropica-style. Details here.

International Virus-Hunting & Pirate-Talking Day

Ahoy ye scallywags!

Today, September 19th, be International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and as is appropriate, today we be talking about our favorite pirate, Captain Crawfish!

As promised, he released his video walkthrough for Virus Hunter Island, one of this month’s ITOM! (Only took him three years. And keeping in line with the rule of threes, the video was actually released three days ago, but they only made a blog post now. Kind of like us… 😅)

Remember, any player who completes Virus Hunter or Mystery of the Map this month will receive extra credits – even those who already finished it! (I like to believe this is my doing, of course.)

Also Snapshot September has come to a close – Slip said he was going to post the results yesterday, but unfortunately he was too busy. They’ll be up soon though, we promise!

Keep a weather eye on the horizon,

An Iota of IOTM

Hello readers!

UPDATE: Poptropica has updated its post to say that old-timers will also be rewarded as well – the first time you complete an Island you’ve already finished, you’ll get a 100 credit bonus. Also,  those of you who have already completed the IOTM – you’ll get a 300 credit bonus the first time you complete it again!

While I’m struggling with composite functions, there’s big news in Poptropica: they increased the credit count for completing islands (again)! They’ve doubled it from 150 to 300! (I swear, things always get easier for the younger generation, doesn’t it?)

In addition, every month, the creators are going to feature two Islands of the Month, which will award 500 credits… to first-time finishers. Come on creators, throw us old-timers a bone!

This month’s IOTM (Islands of the Month) are Mystery of the Map (guide here) and Virus Hunter (guide here), for anyone who wants to try to get some extra credits. The Creators also leave us with this promise: “We’ll also be doing some cool stuff for the Islands of the Month here on the (Creators’) blog and on Poptropica’s social media, so stay tuned…”

In addition to this news, the PHB got a shout-out in the very same post! Check it out:

You also might want to explore one of our amazing fan blogs, the Poptropica Help Blog. They have their own Island Guides — one for every Island! We haven’t watched all the videos or read through all the walkthroughs, but we know lots of Poptropica players turn to the PHB for help — so you might want to check them out!

We appreciate the praise creators. We think your walkthroughs are pretty great too… the ones you’ve released, at least.

See you guys later,

Ylimegirl

Engineering with a Monkey Wrench

(Hey Poptropicans! Today’s news is brought to you in a guest post by Tall Cactus, who also runs her own Poptropica blog and frequently visits the PHB chat now on Discord. Hope you enjoy! –slantedfish)

Hello Poptropicans! It’s me, Tall Cactus, and I have some news to share with you!

First of all, the name of the mysterious upcoming island has finally been revealed. If you go to your medallion list, you’ll see this… Yup, its name is Monkey Wrench Island!

monkey wrench island

Now, this could be a code name that may later change, but either way, I was not expecting that. I thought it would be called something like Castaway Island. Maybe we’ll get an official announcement sometime this week about what’s likely to be the new tutorial upgrade!

In other news, in celebration of National Engineers Week, Poptropica is offering 300 credits for first-time completions of various science-themed islands! That’s twice as much as the usual 150! The special islands are Steamworks, Lunar Colony, Shrink Ray, and Virus Hunter Island, and again, it must be your first time finishing them to win the extra credits. (Click the island names for guides!)

However, this ends on February 27th (Saturday), so make sure to get the extra credits if you can! You could win up to 1200 credits for these four islands! I, on the other hand, have already completed all of those islands, so I get nothing.

300 credits

That’s all for now. See you guys soon!
