Ranking the Poptropica Tribes’ Common Rooms ๐Ÿšช๐ŸŒด

Hey Poptropicans, Purple here! (It’s been an embarrassingly long while…). While the PHB’s Tribal Tournament wrapped up at the end of August, alongside some sobering news regarding Poptropica’s future, it’s never too late to revisit one of the old game’s classic features: the Tribes, and their respective common rooms!

Back in Pop’s glory days, joining any of the eight Poptropolis Tribes granted access to a special themed common room open only to fellow Tribe members. The common rooms served as a fun way to boost tribal spirit and meet like-minded players. Today, I’ll be ranking each Tribe’s common room based on aesthetic, creativity, and how well it represents its Tribe! (Note: these rankings are just my personal opinions, and have nothing to do with the Tribes themselves!)

8: Flying Squid

Diving right in, the Flying Squid common room doesn’t make a big enough splash to swim (fly?) past 8th place. Honestly, it was difficult ranking this room at the bottom. The interactive tub of squid ink and the captured sea monster (a sweet reference to Cryptids Island!) are nice touches, but the rest feels somewhat bland to me. The poster warning “beware the Flying Squid” is the only element referencing the โ€˜Flyingโ€™ half of this Tribeโ€™s name. I think itโ€™d be interesting to see more of that incorporated into their room alongside the underwater theme. ๐Ÿฆ‘

7: Yellowjackets

Buzzing into 7th place, we’ve got the secret hive of the Yellowjackets! I’m giving this common room a bonus point for having a very cool concept. A mechanical beehive with a wasp-themed helicopter? That’s an awesome hangout spot! Unfortunately, while the idea is recognizable, I feel it could’ve been executed better. The blue-and-white skyline background doesn’t seem to fit the rest of the mood, and other than honeycomb shapes, the interior doesn’t really lean into the beehive vibe. If only it came together a little better, it could climb a little higher…๐Ÿ

6: Nanobots

Coming in at 6th, the robotic fortress of the Nanobots may just take the cake for coolest interactive feature! That huge beatmaker machine, complete with options to change volume, tempo, and add various percussion sounds, definitely makes the Nanobots room a place to spend a lot of time messing around in. The silhouetted robotic arms and instruments make for a nice background as well. Who knew the Nanobots were such a musically-inclined Tribe! I would’ve given this common room a higher ranking, but other than the awesome beatmaker, there’s not too much else to explore. ๐Ÿค–

5: Pathfinders

With their elegant, stately hideout, the Pathfinders common room finds its way to 5th place! I adore the amount of details put into every floor in this room: glass shelves of skulls, spyglasses, and microscopes, wall maps, an enormous spinning diamond. There’s always more to see! It’s also a very accurate representation of its Tribe’s aesthetic. All the maps, compasses and paraphernalia nicely reflect the Pathfinders’ title as adventurers of the Islands. While it isn’t as flashy as others in terms of interactivity, in my opinion, it makes up for that with its amazing design! ๐Ÿงญ

4: Wildfire

Marking the halfway point, it’s the red-hot boiler room of the Wildfire! This common room screams tribal pride. The symbol of the Wildfire flag, leaping orange flames, decorates a burning furnace connected to branching pipes. I quite enjoy the mechanical steampunk vibe going on in here. The various steam-powered birds, especially the center one with wings spread, are reminiscent of the Mother Phoenix and her chicks from Astro-Knights Island! The hazy orange gradient scheme works well, and the exit, a ladder leading up through the floor rather than doors, is a creative way to match the mood. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

3: Nightcrawlers

Now, I promise I’m not biased by worming the underground den of my own Tribe, the Nightcrawlers, into the 3rd place slot. Although it may have a tendency to freak out arachnophobics, it’s one of the most aesthetically pleasing common rooms around! The progression of light to dark purple throughout the three floors, the softly glowing crystals, the hanging jars of fireflies. Even the spiderweb and egg sacs don’t detract from the magical aura this room gives off. I’d be enchanted to work at that charming little desk, or drift off in one of those cozy wall-crevice beds. Just don’t provoke the creepy crawlers! ๐Ÿชฑ

2: Black Flags

Just shy of the top spot is the glorious treasure trove of the Black Flags! The Black Flags common room (is it a room, or a ship?) may just be the most creative design-wise. It captures the Tribe’s dark pirate aesthetic perfectly, with its ship deck floors, teetering crow’s nest, and piles of plundered gold. And instead of being boxed in by walls, it lets its flags fly free in the open stormy sky over rough seas! The smaller details of the mermaid statue, caged bird skeleton, and multiple cannons add the icing to the cake…err, the figurehead to the prow. All in all, a mighty meeting place for these fine sea-goers! โ˜ ๏ธ Which leaves…

1: Seraphim

…in 1st place, the angelic abode of the Seraphim! This common room is absolutely breathtaking, and personally, I can’t find anything to dislike about it. The center piece, a hooded Poptropican seraph floating in a stained glass window, is hauntingly beautiful and sets the tone for the rest of the room. The lowest floor’s flickering fireplace gives just enough light so as not to overshadow the stars visible through the crumbling walls in the night sky, and the telescope, candlelight, and distantly floating turrets all beautifully represent the celestial Seraphim name. This common room is well deserving of its number one spot! ๐Ÿชฝ

And with that, the ranking is complete! Do you agree with each common room’s placement? Let me know how you’d rank them in the comments down below! Pop on,

Ranking the Poptropica Tribe Uniforms ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿฅ‹

Greetings, Poptropicans!

The PHB’s 3rd quadrennial Tribal Tournament is going strong. To celebrate this momentous event, I’m going to rank the tribes’ uniforms. No, not the palette-swapped jerseys from Poptropolis Games… I’m talking about custom themed suits. ๐Ÿ‘ผ๐Ÿ๐Ÿงญ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿฆ‘๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿค–

Yes, the Pop Creators made eight unique uniforms for each tribe, but they were never released for some unknown reason. Nowadays, you can show your tribal pride with the aid of the ASG machine. That’s cool, but how well do the uniforms represent their respective tribes?

While you are reading this list, please keep in mind that I don’t mean any disrespect to the tribes themselves. I’m just saying that some of these looks could have been better. Let the ranking begin!

#8. Black Flags

idkBlackFlagsASG

What about a pile of junk makes one think “team spirit”? Not even the gold coins in the chest make this look enticing. I guess the designers were going for a shipwreck theme for the uniform, but it looks so haphazard. Also, for a tribe named “Black Flags“, there is a startling lack of black on display. A dark and spooky buccaneer costume would be A LOT cooler in my opinion. I give the Black Flags uniform 2 out of 10 doubloons.

#7. Pathfinders

idkPathfindersASG

Now we’re getting to the actual outfits. The colors match the Pathfinders logo, but the uniform itself doesn’t. Looking at their motto and common room, the Pathfinders seem to be about navigating the world and searching for treasure. While scuba divers explore the ocean, they don’t fit the broad navigation theme that the tribe represents. And why no compass motif? I give the Pathfinders uniform 4 out of 10 diving helmets.

#6. Seraphim

idkSeraphimASG

As a proud Seraphim member, I have mixed feelings about my tribe’s uniform. I really like the design of the hood and the fact that the uniform includes what appear to be stone wings. Those are certainly cool, but I don’t fully get some of the choices here. The designers were probably going for an athletic look with the poncho-cloak and pants, but I prefer a longer cloak for a traditional look. I’m also surprised that blue is a prominent color here. The blue and gold combo looks good, but there’s no black (one of the tribe’s main colors). I give the Seraphim uniform 6 out of 10 angel feathers.

#5: Nightcrawlers

idkNightcrawlersASG

Here’s a very cool suit fitting of the Nightcrawlers. The mechanical insect legs fit the tribe’s insect inspiration, and the crystals on the helmet resemble the ones found in their common room. The rendering on the helmet is stellar! However, the one thing that’s bugging me is the plain suit and belt; they clash with the detailed helmet and chest piece and throw the whole look off-balance. Adding a bit more detail to the body would have bumped this up further on the list. I give the Nightcrawlers uniform 7 out of 10 crystals.

#4: Yellowjackets

idkYellowjacketsASG

Ah, yes. Some of you may recognize this uniform as the inspiration for Omegon’s design. Aside from inspiring an awesome villain, the Yellowjackets uniform represents its respective tribe in spades. The black and yellow mech suit fits the Yellowjackets’ high tech headquarters. Plus, I like that the jetpack is pointed like a stinger. While it’s not as flashy as some of the other uniforms, it’s a simple but effective look appropriate for the tribe. I give the Yellowjackets uniform 7.5 out of 10 honeycombs.

#3: Nanobots

idkNanobotsASG

Now this is a cool suit to wear! It’s vibrant, funky, and fits the musical elements of the Nanobots common room. While it matches the tribe’s music theme, it doesn’t exactly match the Nanobots image. Please pardon the sound puns, but the uniform’s colors are super loud compared to the common room’s muted color scheme. How about making the uniform reddish-pink like the Nanobots flag? The suit would still be colorful while matching the tribe’s colors. Nitpicks aside, this is a sweet look for Nanobots members. I give the Nanobots uniform 8 out of 10 bass drops and the bronze medal for Best Poptropica Tribe Uniform. ๐Ÿฅ‰

#2. Wildfire

idkWildfireASG

While the Yellowjackets uniform inspired Omegon, the Wildfire uniform may have been inspired by Sir Pelasus from Astro-Knights Island. Notice the similar color scheme and knobs on the helmet? It’s not a total copy-paste, fortunately. This suit replaces the knightly cape and plume with mechanical rivets and pipes, and the bird-like helmet is a cool nod to the phoenix organ in the tribe’s common room. I’m sure any Wildfire member would love to sport this awesome armor! I give the Wildfire uniform 9 out of 10 torches and the silver medal for Best Poptropica Tribe Uniform. ๐Ÿฅˆ

#1. Flying Squid

idkFlyingSquidASG

The Flying Squid uniform features a wonderfully strange mashup of aquatic and aerial elements fitting of the tribe’s equally strange name. The awesome tentacle mask is squid-tastic, and the aviator goggles and wings are a funny way to emphasize the flight aspect of the Flying Squid. Speaking of wings, the red wings immediately pop in this primarily green and brown uniform. Let’s wish the Flying Squids a safe flight! I give the Flying Squid uniform 10 out of 10 squiddy high-fives and the gold medal for Best Poptropica Tribe Uniform. ๐Ÿฅ‡

And that’s my ranking of the eight Poptropica tribe uniforms! How would you rank these uniforms? Do you view the Black Flags uniform as an underrated treasure? Did the Flying Squid wrongfully take the gold with their slimy tentacles? Let us know in the comments below!

Speaking of tribes, join us for our 2024 Tribal Tournament! All you have to do is enter the PHC, pick a tribe, and earn points by competing in each round! Read the announcement post for more details about the tournament and rules, and stay tuned for Round 2 on Wednesday, August 14!

Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

Poptropica Tribes, Fun Facts, and Fan Art with Invisible Ring

Hey Poptropicans, this is aย guest postย by Invisible Ring. Enjoy!

Whether it be Poptropolis teams, tribal common rooms, or Poptastic Night Watch Island hats, the Tribes are among the most memorable, iconic traits of Poptropica!ย Even in our post-Glowbhax years, where you need Steam or Flashpoint to access anything tribe-related, loyal tribe fans everywhere have kept the legacy going.

In addition to the Poptropica Help Blogโ€™s Tribal Tournaments and dedicated tribe pages, there have been Poptropicans who designed their clubhouses in tribal themes (like Seraphim) and invited other members of their tribe to dress in their tribal colors and join in the fun!

ย And then there’s me:ย  a guest blogger who shared the legacy of tribes back on Poptropica.com, and has now returned to share about the tribes in a way like never before! โ€ฆStarting with our friend the Flying Squid.

The FLYING SQUID is the cephalopod tribe that will never be dismantledโ€ฆ Especially since it was the Poptropolis Gamesโ€™ default tribe, where newcomers like me were assigned to before they got to choose a tribe for themselves.

The WILDFIRE tribe proved their burning desire to be the best, back when the first Poptropolis Island sank to the sea.ย  It was there that the Poptropicans from every tribe were challenged to swim down to that island and dig it back up, so that the Poptropolis 2013 island could rise… And the Wildfires dug up more of the island than every other tribe combined! โ€œAll hail the Wildfires!โ€

The YELLOWJACKETS are a fearless yellow tribe intent on making their rivals yellow with fear. What makes these hornets even scarier is that the PoptropiCon villain Omegon is said to have originated from an experimental tribal Yellowjacket costume project that Poptropica made long agoโ€ฆ

The BLACK FLAGS will stop at nothing to plant their flag of victory. My second favorite tribe, and a clear opposite of the White Flag of Surrender. Pirate fans, welcome aboard! P.S. Ye can also find the Black Flag on me PIRATE MOVIE, with the mark of another tribe stamped upon it!

The PATHFINDERS, whom I call the โ€œLost Poptropicansโ€, are looking to find their path, and find a gold medal…

…while the SERAPHIM ride on the wings of their dreams, for better or worse. In my experience, these two tribes have found much in common with each other, and their members have been known to make friends and form alliances with each other in places like the Hub โ€” Home Island’s first arcade, identical to the Pathfinders’ common room โ€”ย the perfect place for any lost Poptropicans!

The NIGHTCRAWLERS are sneaky. They only act like pushovers so they can trap you, like the Black Widow, or even the Teen Arachnid! โ€ฆWhy the Arachnid? Letโ€™s just say that Nightcrawler is one of the many tribal names I used as superhero codenames for my PoptropiCon comic saga.ย (Final comic book still under construction. I must remain vigilant!)

Lastly, the NANOBOTS. This tribe is programmed for victory, and believes that tiny is mighty! โ€ฆOr maybe itโ€™s a tribe for those who know their way around computers and programming. Who knows?

Which tribe is YOUR favorite? โ€ฆMY favorite is the Seraphim Tribe!

But when I first chose it as my tribe, I didnโ€™t know any of this tribal information that I know now. (Except for the default tribe, Flying Squid.) I didnโ€™t know the โ€œwings of your dreamsโ€ description for the Seraphim. I just thought that a tribe of flaming swordfighting angels was the coolest tribe to be in!

I also thought the Seraphim had the coolest common room. As much as I wanted to switch tribes and check out the other tribal common rooms, I didnโ€™t want to leave the awesome tribe or common room I was already in! My favorite tribe felt like an AWESOME exclusive club to me. It felt like I was part of a union, or a clan, or even an Ephraim University fraternity/sorority!ย  Did your favorite tribe feel like that?

Seraphim tribal common room

โ€ฆIf not, thatโ€™s ok. Itโ€™s possible that none of the 8 Poptropica Tribes were for you, or you didnโ€™t even have the chance to join a tribe before the wave of Glowbhax!

So to wrap this post up, hereโ€™s a big question for you: If you were to make your own tribe, what would it be?

โ€ฆBecause if I were to make my own tribe, it would look like THIS.

Inspired by the Poptropica graphic novels.

If you want to design a tribe too, you can find the activity sheet right here. You can even print out a set of your own tribal cards for you to color any way you want. (Note: These tribal fan cards are for your personal enjoyment only, not for public dueling tournaments!!)

Enjoy the activities, and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments about your favorite tribes, AND your custom tribes!

Thatโ€™s all for now. Pop to ya later!

Community Creations

Community Creations: August 2020

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the August recap for Community Creations! August’s theme was Poptropolis Games Tribes (and the featured work is not in any particular order). Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue whatโ€™s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

PHB Poptropolis Games Banner by Gentle Dolphin

Hey!!! I’m in this one!!! *ahem* Potential biases aside, this banner design totally rocks. Featuring each one of the Tribe Representatives from our recent Tribal Tournament (which included current PHB authors as well as other community members), a display of pride for each tribe is shown in this piece. I love the respective color schemes, with each section containing a unique style (background, posing, expression, etc.). Insane detail and variety in such seemingly simple color blocking! Find her DeviantArt here.

Seraphim for the Win by happyclonetrooper

Oooh, this one is practically glowing! Practically… flying? The subtle lighting of the sun behind Maroon Ring, as well as the misty layering of the clouds, creates such an immersive environment. The colors and lineart are super clean, and I love seeing how the texture of the rock differs from the grass and trees. Plus, the square framing is quite unexpected! And yet the Poptropican is still able to feel as if they are leaping out at the viewer. Seraphim is lucky to have this artist on their team! Find her DeviantArt here or her Instagram here.

Wild Fire by Fierce Flyer

This submission has some pretty stunning lighting as well, wouldn’t you say? A simple composition, but effectively bold in its execution! The smooth movement and bright colors of the flames are quite an excellent display of Wildfire pride. And the jacket really makes FF look… well, fierce! The expression and setting make him appear ready for competition! Flameo! Find his DeviantArt here or chat with him on Discord.

Black Flags Costume by Greedy Shadow

Nice, I love a costume submission! We certainly saw an outstanding amount of Black Flags representation this year, huh? And for good reason! This outfit perfectly matches the dark/mysterious, yet powerful aesthetic of the tribe. And the setting of this overcast overhang just adds to that brooding theme! This costume was without a doubt well put together. Find them in the comment section!

The Poptropolis Games by Celeste (Purple Paw)

Another cool representation of all the tribes! Though we each are steadfast with pride for our individual teams, it is nice to see them come together in creations such as this. The composition features so many classic Poptropolis Games, er, games, but which one is your favorite? I love the diversity yet simultaneous unity among these scenes, along with the energy that they display. A fantastic submission! Find them in the comments section or on Discord as Purple Paw (and congratulate them on being the MVP for Round 2 of the tournament!).

Honorable Mentions

Going hand in hand with the PHB’s Tribal Tournament, this month was so much fun! From artwork, to trivia, to poems, and games, wasn’t it a blast? For the results of the tournament, along with a ton of other amazing Poptropolis Games Tribal artwork, be sure to check out our recap post.

September: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that monthโ€™s theme. So what is September’s theme? September’s theme isโ€ฆ

Masks!

During times like these, it is super important to wear masks and try our best to keep one another safe. But masks aren’t just hassle! They can be creative, fashionable, and fun to wear too. So why not bring something we all have in common to this month’s theme, and spread a little awareness along the way? This month is for all those super creative minds out there!

Poptropica has already gifted us with some in-store face masks (both fun and friendly), but do you have any cool mask designs for our Poptropicans to wear? In fact, your creations can really bend the limits on what “mask” really means. Maybe you want to take inspiration from Super Power Island and PoptropiCon and design your own masked Poptropican superhero! Maybe the masked Medicine Man from Shark Tooth Island deserves more fan art? Or maybe you could even design some DIY Poptropica themed masks for yourself IRL!

  • Comment below with a link to whatever youโ€™ve created OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as youโ€™d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, Iโ€™m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so donโ€™t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!
