community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the May recap for Community Creations. May’s theme was Jade Scarab, so be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Jade Scarab Kitty by queen-sophie

If you weren’t prepared to see a bunch of paws-itively purr-fect cat art this month… well this is your first and final warning. With a theme like Jade Scarab, it should be no surprise who the star of this month is! In this design, I love the subtle glow effects and the shine in the cat’s eyes and collar, seemingly hinting at the true secrets that this fearsome feline holds. Find her Tumblr here.

Uhhhh meow? by distorted-graffiti

Coincidentally, I’m currently working on a screencap redraw challenge of my own in my current art class, so this submission just happened to catch my eye! A wonderfully humorous scene from Jade Scarab Island, this redraw successfully captures the mood of the moment. Not to mention how cool it is to see the exact scene from in-game in someone else’s style! Find their Tumblr here.

Cat Key by TillyMeowJings

What did I say about cats this month, eh? I love this unique take on the “Jade Scarab kitty” and the idea of feline idols in general. Lots of thought was put into this design, and the display of information is quite clear and, well, informative. Very creative! Find their Tumblr here.

Egyptian Excavator by Magic Poptropican

Here we have a Jade Scarab inspired costume, which I love to see for some variety in the midst of all these illustrations! Jade Scarab is in fact not the only island in which Poptropicans can visit Egypt, nor the only island including some excavation, so I love this sort of mix-and-match of apt accessories. And a very colorful outfit at that! Find the artist in the comment section.

Kitty Goddess by sleepybiker

Lastly, of course, another awesome kitty feature. Who knew Bastet could be so powerful AND so adorable? We only see the goddess for a short moment in her true form, so it’s interesting to think about what she would be like when she’s not sneaking around in her more furry form. I love the humor in this portrayal of some very cat-like behavior. Quite the fursona, I must say. 👀😻 Find their DeviantArt here.

As always, these submissions were paws-itively purr-fect! Oh, I already used those puns, huh? Well anyway, they still apply! Keep up the awesome work!

June: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is June’s theme? June’s theme is…

🎠🎈🤡 CARNIVAL! 🤡🎈🎠

With the recent release of Poptropica on Steam, one major change was not left unnoticed by fans: Monster Carnival’s re-release has an alternate ending. The island has had its fair share of controversy and concerns raised, so these changes are likely for the better.

Since all this news is on our minds, why not relate it to this month’s theme? Despite the controversies, Ringmaster Raven remains a fan-favorite character, after all. So this month, anything carnival related applies! That could mean anything related to Monster Carnival Island for sure, but also extends to anything under the carnival umbrella like clowns, balloons, carousels, and more!

I also wanted to leave it a bit more open ended since this June is Pride Month, and so you could totally incorporate some sort of campy aspects of pride into the world of carnivals if you get creative enough.

  • Submit: Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitterTumblr, or Discord.
  • Results: Next month, I will feature 5 submissions that stood out to me the most as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Just make sure you relate to both the theme and Poptropica (and nothing NSFW or otherwise inappropriate).
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as you’d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, I’m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so don’t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Jade Scarab Island, Social Media, Steam Bundle

Ghostly Rap and Jade Scarab on Map 👻🐈

Hello Poptropicans! Two important posts from the Creators today, both pertaining to islands. Let’s pop in for a look!

As promised, here’s another hint for the upcoming 13 island releases on Steam: “I’m a sailor that’s neither living nor dead. I’ll transport you to the danger ahead. My role is restored; climb into my boat to collect your reward. Who am I?” (In case you missed it, check out yesterday’s hint here!)

This one can apply to multiple islands, considering the many sailor characters present among all the, well, islands. We’ve seen guesses ranging from Ghost Story Island (Valiant Lovejoy) to Skullduggery Island (sailing galore!).

But as Gentle Dolphin speculates, the one that seems fit most may be Mythology Island, with the hint possibly referring to Charon, the ferryman of the underworld (“neither living nor dead”) who takes you to Cerberus (“the danger ahead”).

While a remastered version of Mythology currently exists in the game, Charon’s River Styx minigame was one of the parts cut out from the controversial Haxe version. “My role is restored,” then, may be a hint for a return of the classic and popular Mythology Island.

Do you have any guesses as to which it could be? Fortunately, many future hints are promised, so we can continue guessing! We’ve seen Poptropicans on the lookout for space, carnivals, superheroes (and supervillains!), and many more. Stay tuned!

The other announcement is that Secret of the Jade Scarab Island is now on the map and will be available to all players “before you know it!” No current date is set, but it’s nice to see the long-awaited Dream Island winner at last, with our little kitty friend making another appearance! 😊

Jade Scarab Island, Monthly Costume Contests

January Costume and Jade Scarab Crumbs 🐈

Hello Poptropicans! In between being addicted to the Encanto soundtrack, I have some exciting updates!

The Creators announced the winner of the January Costume Contest: The Rockette by Purple Dragon. This outfit has pretty shades of gold and jade, and can even launch the player into the air with a jet pack!

And speaking of jade…

The Creators also announced that Secret of the Jade Scarab is in development, and will be available to all players upon release. No date has been announced yet, but they posted these teasers on the blog:

Not much has been revealed about the plot or other characters yet, though you can get an inside scoop from the designer here on the PHB, and more sneak peeks are to come! I quite like this little cat. I wonder if she’s related to Bastet in some way? 🤔🐈

Are there any particular Egyptian gods you’d like to see in this island, and what theories do you have about the characters or story? Do you plan on glitching your way past the stratosphere with the new jet pack? Let us know!

Community Creations

Community Creations: March 2021

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the March recap for Community Creations! March’s theme was Ancient Egypt (and the featured work is not in any particular order). Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Grave Robbing by Midnightoilstudios

Kicking things off with Copy Cat, Moreau, Director D., Black Widow, Octavian, and the Booted Bandit! An unlikely group perhaps, but maybe just the team needed for this dangerous sort of job… or perhaps just the team to spell future betrayal. The setting in unmistakably Egyptian, perfect for our theme, and the lighting is wonderfully dramatic. I really appreciate the attention not only put towards the characters, but the environment as well. I feel like everyone could fall into a trap at any moment! I’d love to see where this story goes. Find the artist on DeviantArt.

The Lost Pyramid of Wawa-‘aww (Woo-oo!) : Duck Tails 2017 Tribute by Barefoot Knuckle

Ooooh! Or, should I say, woo-oo! Any DuckTales fans in the comment section? If you aren’t familiar with the show, its series finale recently aired, so this submission is the perfect tribute. Though Poptropicans may look a little bug-eyed at first from the perspective of the McDucks, I think both groups of adventurers would get along just fine. And just think of the adventures that would be had! This cartoon is no stranger to visiting Ancient Egypt, and I think that Annie Perkins from the Cryptid Island novel is a perfect match. Next to Annie is “Samir Badawi,” the main character of Barefoot Knuckle’s own Arabian Nights fan-novel. You can really tell how much thought and love was put into this idea! Excellent work. Find the artist in the comment section.

Pop Creators in Egypt by Smart Icicle

One thing I like about this submission is its representation of different Ancient Egyptian occupations. And it turns out that they correspond pretty well with three of our favorite Poptropica villains! Dr. Hare being a carrot farmer makes perfect sense, along with Captain Crawfish as a solider and Black Widow as our artistic scribe. Hmmm… I wonder what Binary Bard’s role would be? Anyway, this is a pretty neat submission! Find the artist on DeviantArt.

Egyptian Villains by AdventurersNHunters

In this submission, we have a classic display of Poptropica’s four biggest villains. But with an Egyptian twist, of course! I love that this design isn’t just about dressing these Poptropicans up in Egyptian clothes, but instead has a little more story to it. AdventurersNHunters says that “Dr. Hare, Binary Bard, Black Widow, and Captain Crawfish impersonate Egyptian royalty and grab the diamonds!” That simple description makes it all make sense, just like that. Quite the clever composition! Find the artist on DeviantArt.

Egypt by Dangerous Dragon

Alright, I think we all knew that we couldn’t get through our Ancient Egypt theme without showcasing the Pyramids, right? Out of mummies, tombs, pharaohs, and hieroglyphs, pyramids is definitely the next association on the list. Though this composition is fairly simple, it matches our theme well and utilizes a great color scheme. The yellow orange of the sandstone and the blazing red of the sun give off lots of visual heat, and it’s interesting to see those colors continue in the Poptropican in the foreground. I also like how the rough texture of the pyramid is balanced by the soft texture of the sky/background. Neat work! Find the artist in the comments section.

Aaaaand, as a mummy would now say, that’s a wrap! You guys had fantastic submissions as always, so I’m excited to see what you’ll to next!

April: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is April’s theme? April’s theme is…

Bugs!

Last month, we celebrated the upcoming Secret of the Jade Scarab Island with our Ancient Egypt theme. Why not continue the trend? Let’s take the “scarab” part of the Dream Island contest winner a bit literally, with the theme of bugs! Though creepy crawlies can be a bit, well, creepy, they don’t necessarily have to be! However you decide to incorporate them is up to you.

Obviously Poptropica’s Nightcrawlers Tribe has already taken our theme to heart, but they’re not the only ones getting the spotlight. Aside from the aforementioned Jade Scarab, there are actually plenty of bugs in Poptropica! Er, well, there are also plenty of bugs in Mocktropica too, now that I think about it! Dr. Hare’s nightmare about ants comes to mind, for one. And yes, we are counting things like spiders because we’re dealing with bugs, not necessarily insects! That makes Black Widow fair game. If only we got to encounter Moth Man on Cryptids Island, huh? Anyway, I’ll stop bugging you so you can get to creating!

  • Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.

Inside look at Dream Island winner: Secret of the Jade Scarab 🏝🐞

Hey Poptropicans, we have a very special guest with us! Girl Power (aka Lyndsey, or GwenBrightly on Poptropica) is one of the winners of Poptropica’s Design Your Dream Island Contest. In this post, she’ll be sharing about her winning idea, Secret of the Jade Scarab Island. Let’s get digging!

Hello, Poptropica Help Blog readers! I’d love to share more details about Secret of the Jade Scarab Island. I kept the descriptions spoiler free, so that certain plot points remain a surprise. 🙂

I had a ton of fun brainstorming for Secret of the Jade Scarab in between grading homework and writing lesson plans (I was in the middle of student teaching). I grew up playing games like Cluefinders and Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, which gave me a love of games that teach about history. Ancient Egyptian lore and culture has always fascinated me, so it was awesome to have an excuse to use all that knowledge.

Sphinx from Nabooti Island

First look

Our story begins when the player arrives outside the Ancient Antiquities Museum in a bustling Egyptian city and follows signs inside to find that Claira the Curator is in a panic because the newest exhibit isn’t going to open on time. She’s lost contact with the team of archeologists who were supposed to be excavating King Khnurn’s tomb (his name means “reborn sun” in Egyptian). Being the kind, friendly, and helpful Poptropican that you are, you volunteer to go investigate.

Spelunky: At the end of our rope.

When you arrive in the village of Iteru (which means “river” in Egyptian), a local merchant points you in the direction of the archeological dig, where you meet Howard Diggory, head egyptologist. He explains that bizarre things have been happening at the dig and that there are rumors of a mummy’s curse, which has stalled progress in excavating and cataloging the tomb. It’s up to you to find the root of the problem and discover whether or not the tomb really is cursed.

Egyptian tomb from Nabooti Island

You’ll explore the tomb and village, speaking to the locals and gaining their trust through various tasks. Befriending the merchant is a good place to start. She’ll tell you all about the legend of the Jade Scarab, said to give its owner untold power, but only if you help her translate some old scrolls and track down her great nephew for her. Could someone be after the scarab?

Featured locations include:

  • The Ancient Antiquities Museum in Cairo – a place filled with displays of famous ancient Egyptian artifacts. Players can learn about life in ancient Egypt and maybe find some easter eggs from other islands. I like to imagine that it’s owned by the Poptropica equivalent of Zahi Hawass – a very famous Egyptologist who has probably appeared in pretty much any documentary you may have watched on Egypt.
Zahi Hawass, Egyptologist (photo: Smithsonian Magazine)
  • The village of Iteru – Close to the dig site. I envision something multi-levelled and filled with bright colors against the sandy/tan-ish color of the brick buildings. There are houses on the higher level and a market on the lower one. You can visit lots of townspeople to learn about the origins of the mummy’s curse, tomb robbers, the importance of the Nile, etc. In order to get them to answer your questions, you have to run errands for them such as potentially fishing, sailing, gathering papyrus, etc. The merchant’s shop is a highlight, as she gives the player a lot of the background on the Jade Scarab after you find her grandson (who is in an alleyway playing with a cat).
How Bazaar: Every time I look around.
  • The dig site – in the Valley of the Kings – lots of weird stuff is happening there, which has caused the locals to theorize that the team of archeologists have unleashed a curse. You can find typical archeologist tools, crates, tents, various artifacts that are being catalogued, and maybe a jeep. There are a few site members to interview, but several have fled, and one is in the hospital.
Camp Value: The Pup Tent sleep one
  • King Knurn’s Tomb – Either underground or inside a cliff. The Jade Scarab is supposedly hidden somewhere deep inside. The player can explore different parts of the tomb throughout the story, with some getting unlocked as they progress. Skills learned from the villagers (like reading hieroglyphics) can be used here to solve puzzles and gather more information about the legends surrounding the Jade Scarab.
Hieroglyphs on Nabooti Island

Important characters

  • Claira the Curator – Runs the Ancient Antiquities Museum and is worried about the museum’s latest exhibit not arriving on time. I chose her name because I wanted something with alliteration and a tie to Egypt, so I took the a-i-r from Cairo and inserted it into a name that went well with Curator.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo, Egypt (photo: MoMAA.org)
  • Howard Diggory – Head egyptologist of the archeological dig, worried about the recent mishaps and potential curse. Very passionate about Egyptology and uncovering lost history. He was named Howard after Howard Carter, who discovered King Tut’s tomb, and Diggory because he’s an archeologist and spends a lot of time digging.
Striking a blow for workers’ rights.
  • Awantagi – the foreman of the dig. He’s the prickly type and doesn’t particularly like you sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong.
  • The Merchant – a mysterious old lady who sells a variety of objects (both ancient and modern). She tells the player the legend of the Jade Scarab after they have helped her translate some old scrolls (learn about Egyptian culture and book of the dead) and located her great nephew (who is chasing after a cat).
  • Bast – the Egyptian cat who likes to pop up and do cat stuff, like expect you to cater to her every whim.

Visuals

I am not the best of artists, but I do have some pictures from an old project I did for school that I used for inspiration.

I didn’t necessarily plan for a pyramid to appear in Secret of the Jade Scarab, but I do really like the concept of having a scene that shows the Nile and some Egyptian boats.

This is sort of what I’d like the market to look like. Bright colors, hieroglyphics, and an abundance of different objects for players to interact with.

Anyway, thank you SO much to the PHB for reaching out, and to all of you for your interest! It’s such an honor to be able to share some of the ideas that have been floating around in my head for the past three months. I honestly can’t wait to see where Poptropica goes with this!
