Artist interview with creator Abigail Grigg, and that friends thingamajig

Hey Poptropicans! Remember Abigail Grigg?

Abigail is a Poptropica artist who’s designed many of the newer things you see on Poptropica, like the monthly new store items and creatures from Reality TV: Wild Safari. She’s also working on the upcoming Zomberry Island content.

Here on the PHB, we recently featured a Pop Portfolio of her work. (Fun fact: She’s also known by her online name, Zukitz!) Now the Creators are joining in by having recently hosted a Q&A with Abigail, which we’re sharing below, with a few grammatical fixes (you can see the original on the Creators’ Blog).

Q: How long have you worked on Poptropica?

A: This month actually marks my first year working for Poptropica. I was hired as an intern last October and then pulled on for fulltime work this earlier this year. Itโ€™s been a big year filled with lots of learning and fun opportunities.

Note: This piece is one of Abigail’s personal artworks, unrelated to Poptropica.

Q: Do you have a favorite Poptropican? How about a favorite Island?

A: I have a lot of love for Amelia. I love adventurous female characters, especially when theyโ€™re wearing goggles and aviator gear.

I might be biased but I really love Reality TV 2. Not only is my first island to have worked on, but I have a lot of love for animals and the safari aesthetic. I love running around and seeing all the animals and landscapes, and I was extremely excited when I heard about the idea and what it entailed.

Q: What kind of artwork do you make when you’re not working on Poptropica?

A: My personal artwork is a mixed bag of various styles and ideas, itโ€™s a bit of a mess. Iโ€™ve got a webcomic called “King and Lionheart” that Iโ€™m constantly working on. I also love creating characters and creatures, so I tend to spew all sorts of new designs when the inspiration strikes. Iโ€™m also working on my own personal indie game with a team of colleagues. I have tons of ideas that I like to mess around with, and there isnโ€™t enough time in the world for me to tackle it all. (Editor’s note: You can read “King and Lionheart” on its website, which the Creators’ Blog decided not to link to.)

Q: What’s your advice for young artists who’d like to go pro?

A: Experiment and try new stuff! I spent most of my time in art school trying out various disciplines, softwares, mediums, and styles. Itโ€™s through trying out different things did I discover my love for storytelling, game development, and illustration. I went to school wanting to become the next Disney animator only to realize that animation wasnโ€™t my passion, and instead found interest in other mediums. Donโ€™t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and get messy with new things, itโ€™s the best way to learn what youโ€™re into and what you donโ€™t want to do.

Also on the Creators’ Blog this past week, Blue Tooth made a little guide for the new friends pages. Here you can see the fun features, new or revamped, in the 2019-redesigned version of Poptropica friends. Newer features include likes, stickers, a message board, and photo board. As Blue Tooth explains:

Despite the new shiny stuff, Poptropicans have been commenting on what’s been lacking with friends ever since the major overhaul it received early this year. Any veteran Poptropican looking at Blue Tooth’s guide, replete with its wittily captioned screenshots, can see what’s missing from before:

  • The ability to add friends by username and see all your friends’ profiles listed. Blue Tooth herself mentions that “no one’s liked my page, yet” (sorry to bring it up, BT)โ€”but if she were to share her username, and if we could add friends by username, you could bet the face of Poptropica’s social media would be lined up with likes. Plus, you can only see about 10 of your friends listed at a time, so even if you had her added, you might not ever find her profile!
  • Where did the Photo Booth go? Recently, the Photo Booth disappeared from its spot on Home Island, which is why BT doesn’t have any pics to show us there. Other players who’ve made photos before, and who saved them on their new profiles, should still have them.
  • Some customization is for members only. Those fun “bunny swag” (and other swag) stickers and colorful background wallpaper? Members only. Non-members only get to change a measly little mood icon beside their name. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
  • Which islands have been completed by this player? Calling it the “clout meter,” Blue Tooth’s post does show that the island completion stats are still there, but some Poptropicans miss the old display, where one could scroll through a long collection of medallions and see exactly which ones had been won by the player in question.
  • No more Multiverse. While replaced by the Clubhouse, it’s hard to access if you can’t find the friend whose clubhouse you want to visit.

This could turn into another Pop Petition post, so let’s end it here for now. Blue Tooth assures us that “Friending and the Profile WILL be coming to mobile in the near future,” and that, if you have ideas for what else you’d like to see on the profile page, you should leave a comment on the blog.

Anyway, that’s all for this post! Leave your thoughts, questions, and suggestions in the comments, enter your Poptropica Halloween costume into our contest if you haven’t yet, and we’ll see you next time.

Stay friendly, Poptropicans! โœŒ๏ธ

Zomberry Island

Return of the Zomberries

Hello, boys and ghouls! This is Gentle Dolphin bringing you the latest Poptropica news.

Ever since the big island purge last summer, we have been wondering when the classic islands would return to Poptropica. Just a few weeks ago, a “Flashback Friday” post gave us a glimmer of hope for one of Poptropica’s spookiest adventures. Now, a recent post by Blue Tooth has confirmed what we have been suspecting:

Zomberry Island will be coming back!!!

zomberrytease

QUARANTINE BREACH, POPTROPICANS!!

This is your EXCLUSIVE FIRST ALERT that Zomberry Island will be coming back with an all-new experience later this year!! Keep your eyes right here on the blog for upcoming previews, artwork, and more as our team works on a totally new level based on the classic Zomberry Island!

Awesome, right? After months of anticipation, we finally have our first returning island! There is quite a bit to unpack in this post, so let’s take it bit by bit so we can know what to expect.

Although the release date has not been confirmed, the post says that Zomberry Island will be coming back sometime later this year. It might not be October like we were all hoping, but the island will definitely be back before the end of 2019.

The most intriguing statement is that there will be a brand new level based on the classic island. Does this mean that the Creators are adding more content to Zomberry Island? If so, then this would be the first sound-updated island (SUI) to not be a straightforward adaptation of the original. (Unless you count 24 Carrot Island, which was redone for Poptropica Worlds.) Will other classic islands be given more content, as well? There’s a lot to think about here.

This whole idea to make more Zomberry content is not entirely new. Back in 2016, the Daily Pop showcased some concept art for a few possible Zomberry Island-themed minigames; you can read more about them in these “PHB Sneak Peeks” posts right here. Anyway, could this new level be inspired by one of these unfinished minigames? We’ll have to wait and see if that’s the case.

Before the outbreak strikes again, you can prepare yourself by playing the original Zomberry Island via idk’s Old Island Directory. Don’t forget to check out our Zomberry Island Guide if you need help finding key clues and avoiding pesky zomberries.

Are you excited to stop the Zomberry plague a second time? How do you feel about the idea of the Creators adding more content to the old islands? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

In other news, we have some ads that would intrigue the most dedicated space travelers. The Toy Story 4 ad is back to promote the film’s home and digital release. Like last time, players can watch the trailer to get theย Buzz Wings Power! Act fast and claim those wings before the ad disappears to infinity and beyond.

Blue Tooth certainly thinks this power is amazing! She took to social media and posted a video of herself being yeeted into the night sky then falling stylishly back onto the ground. Check it out:

There’s also a new ad for the Disney Channel series “Gabby Duran & the Unsittables”. Watch the short trailer to earn two out-of-this-world prizes: the Space Bubble and the Jeremy Follower.

Curious about the angel costume I’m wearing in the photos? Well, I’ll be representing Team Heavenly for this year’s PHB Halloween Costume Contest! Our theme this year is Heavenly and Hellish”, so be sure to send in your cute and/or devilish costumes. Check out the original contest post for full instructions on how to submit your costumes!

Contests

The PHB’s Halloween Eleven: Heavenly & Hellish

This contest is now closed. Check out the winning costumes!

The Poptropica Help Blog presents

Halloween Costume Contest Eleven:
๐Ÿ˜‡ Heavenly & Hellish ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

As is our tradition here on the PHB, we’re hosting a Halloween costume contest on Poptropica! It’s our eleventh year doing this, and this time around we’re hosting two categories: Heavenly (for all things cute, charming, and classy) and Hellish (for the devilish, deviant, and depraved).

Here’s what you need to know about entering:

  1. Assemble your costume for either category on Poptropica. You may enter each category as many times as you like. Each individual person is eligible to win just once per category.
  2. Take a screenshot of your costume entry in the Costumizer window.* Here’s how to take a screenshot โ€” the instructions will vary depending on your device. For Windows, you’ll also need to paste it somewhere to save it as an image file on your computer. Also, use the in-game Costumizer window (pictured below) as that will display your character at a high resolution. Ideally, crop the image to show just your character.
  3. Upload the image to the web and share the link in the comments of this post. You can use a site like imgur to upload your picture and obtain a web link for it that can then be shared so others can see it. Once you’ve got a link, comment on this PHB post you’re reading right now with the link. Include details such as what category you’re entering, what you’re naming your costume, and anything else you’d like to share about it. Look for my sample entry comment (it’ll be by Slanted Fish) for an example.

*Note: Though we’ve used Avatar Studio (AS) links in the past, many of the newer items in Poptropica are not visible through AS. If your entire costume is still viewable by AS, you’re welcome to provide a link or username in lieu of a picture. However, since AS is no longer a complete guarantee for displaying costumes, we recommend taking a screenshot.

Share a screenshot of your costume in the Costumizer window, like so. You can access this screen from the green shirt button in the menu.

๐Ÿ“ Things to Note โœจ

  • If you send us an Avatar Studio link, you’ll have to keep your costume intact until Halloween so we can see it throughout the month. That’s something you won’t have to concern yourself with if you send a screenshot instead, and it’ll be easier for you to capture multiple costume entries!
  • Tips for seeking out costume parts: We know Poptropica has changed a lot in the past year, making lots of old methods obsolete, but there are still places you can go for cool costume parts. Dig through old store items, buy new store costumes, crank the switch in the New You shop on Home Island, snag something off an NPC from PoptropiCon, sneak your way into old islands with this link from idk the glitcher, and use MAP (for individual parts) or the ASG Machine (for full costumes) along with usernames from our ASG collection.
  • Disclaimer: Our “heavenly” and “hellish” themes refer generally to the imaginations of pop culture at large, and do not necessarily reflect theological perspectives on the nature/ideas of heaven/hell.

๐Ÿ‘‘ Prizes โœจ

  • The contest closes on Wednesday, October 30. We’ll announce the winners the next day.
  • On Halloween (October 31), we’ll post our favorite costumes from each category on the front page of the PHB for all to enjoy.
  • Two grand prize winners will be selected, one in each category. Each grand prize winner will receive a 1-month Poptropica membership.
  • Featured costumes will also be immortalized on our Costumes page, but we’ll also have honorable mentions for just the post, not page.

Happy Costumizing!

๐ŸŽƒโœจ๐Ÿ˜‡ Watch out, guardian angel…
the devil is in the details ๐Ÿ˜ˆ๐Ÿ‘น๐Ÿ‘ป

Pop Petitions

Pop Petition: Clubhouse Perks ๐Ÿก

What’s up, Poptropicans? It’s Lucky Joker here coming at you with another Pop Petition! Today I’ll be discussing things I’d like to see added to the clubhouses on Poptropica. You may agree or disagree with this list, but let’s keep it positive either way. ๐Ÿ˜› Without further ado, to the list!

1) Music

The fact that Poptropica already has an amazing selection of existing tracks from all of its sound updated islands, it’s hard to believe this isn’t an option yet. I mean, what better way to personalize your clubhouse than creating an ambience through your choice of music? Think about it โ€” from the serene sounds of Mythology to the peppy jingle from the streets of Poptropicon โ€” the possibilities are virtually endless!

2) Furniture Interaction & Customization

Similar to what SD said in her Pop Petition last year, I think it’d be fun if there was more interactability with our furniture items. They did it in Poptropica Worlds, so I’m sure they can do it here on the OG Pop too. Bouncing on a bed, flipping a light switch, or surfing through a few TV channels could really make the difference!

Capability to customize furniture would be spectacular as well! Imagine a color changing feature (similar to the colorizer), or being able to rotate and shift items the way you want. The photo booth could serve a whole new purpose if we were able to hang our creations up on our walls. How cool would that be?

Picture from the Poptropica Creators’ blog post guide to clubhousing.

3) Liking & Sharing

Wouldn’t it be neat if all the hard work you put into decorating your clubhouse had a bigger pay off? Having a like button and share button would serve that very purpose! It could function in the same way Realms does: having a code. That way, it wouldn’t be limited to just your friends, and every Poptropican can see it.

Realms sharing features: visiting with a code and giving likes.

Or better yet, it could work like Multiverse used to. You could share a code anywhere (such as on the PHC) and people could type that in, then POOF, they’re in your clubhouse!

4) Frequent Updates

I’d say Poptropica has been pretty good at offering new decorations fairly regularly at this point, but if at all possible, if they can dish them out even more frequently โ€” that’d be super awesome! All in all though, Poptropica, you get a thumbs up from me on this one.

A sampling of clubhouse decorations on Poptropica.

And there it is folks โ€” the things I’d like to see regarding the fantastic clubhouses! What would you like to see added? Feel free to leave your ideas and thoughts in the comments section.

Thank you all for reading and I’ll talk to you in the next one. Pop on!
