Island Flash-back: Counterfeit 🖼

We are halfway through the year, and this series! I probably should get this post finished ASAP because I finished a workout earlier and will probably be sore in the morning.

One thing that helps many people get through the long, hot summer months is doing art! And it just so happens that there’s a Poptropica Island centered around that–along with a mystery that only you can solve. July’s Island is…

Counterfeit!!!

Counterfeit Island is one that a lot of people from the pre-Haxe days loved and remembered. The story revolved around a museum in an idyllic French city, and the thief who planned to ruin it all. (Plus, check out our Pop Places IRL take on the setting!) Of course, I think we can all agree that the Black Widow is the most remembered aspect of this island, like many other villains. 🕷

Sadly, there was little concept art to be found this time. I scoured the Daily Pop archives, but as Counterfeit was released before its creation and they never uploaded past art for it later, I only managed to find this sketch from an old Creators’ Blog post.

Concept art for the design of the secret puzzle to the museum

That doesn’t take away from the impressive design work though! While simplistic, it’s also chic with a lovely bright color palette and great designs of the locations such as the museum and the Black Widow’s lair.

This island should be brought back for those cool spider designs on the bunker walls alone.

Unlike its more fantastical and less educational predecessor Astro-Knights, Counterfeit includes many famous paintings with information on art history, as well as the art forgery that collectors and museums have to deal with.

(Small reminder that using the name “Inspector Veuvre Noire” in a FRENCH TOWN should prove that we would be a lot safer from these villains if only the all the other NPCs didn’t have a single shared brain cell.)

Before I say my closing words, I would also like to showcase this Skullduggery fanart for our previous Island Flash-back made by Dangerous Dragon! Thank you so much for your participation in this, DD! 😁

Now comes your turn, Poptropicans! Let’s remind the Creators why this island became so memorable, and why the efforts that went to create it should not go to waste! Encourage them to preserve their past stories and the potential they held!

Until August! (Hint: Olympics)

📺 Pop YouTubers: making art, rapping smart 🎨🎤

Hey Poptropicans, we’re back with another spotlight on YouTubers fuelling their creativity with Poptropica!

This first video comes from an artist called roseshards, who typically posts animations and paintings of cats on her channel. Here, however, Rose takes on a challenge to make good art using the easel on Counterfeit Island. Can it be done on this limited drawing feature? Watch her struggles and successes:

With just a computer mouse (for the most part) and no undo button, this talented artist was able to turn out a pretty spectacular painting, wouldn’t you say? If you’d like to try out this easel for yourself, check out our post on the situation with classic islands to find your way to Counterfeit Island.

Onto a different art form, a little-known rapper going by the name Yung Boy recently dropped a track called “Garrett” and dedicated it to Poptropica. This rap follows a guy named Garrett, who finds himself on 24 Carrot Island, explores a bit, then moves on to Mythology Island. Check it out:

This Poptropica rap seems to be the first of its kind, and it was pretty slick, right? The gameplay captured in the video goes great with the beat, and the seemingly simplistic lyrics flow well. Sure would be cool to see more of these!

That’s all for this post. Hope you enjoyed these creative videos! And if you’re inspired to make some Poptropica fan art of your own, check out the PHB’s Community Creations. Keep on rocking, Poptropicans! 🤘

Counterfeit Island, Pop Places IRL

Pop Places IRL: Counterfeit

Pop Places IRL Header

Welcome back to “Pop Places IRL,” Poptropicans! You read the title: SD here to compare scenes from Counterfeit Island to the places in real life (IRL) that it was inspired by. Enjoying the series? Be sure to check out other Pop Places IRL posts.

It may be pretty obvious, but Counterfeit Island is supposed to take place in real life France. Many scenes, including Main Street, were made to resemble France’s aesthetic environment—in particular, the country’s parks and natural landscape.

Aside from nature, we can’t forget about Downtown Counterfeit, and the more man-made features of the island! There’s the internet cafe, jazz cafe, and more. Mmmmm, if only there were more bakeries, like real-life Paris!

Moving back into nature, the Countryside was also a significant location in Counterfeit. Home of the Inspector (or should I say, *spoiler* Black Widow), as well as the last place where Balloon Boy’s feet touched the ground. Aren’t both cottages cute?

On the opposite side of the island, we visit the Docks. I wouldn’t go so far as to say France is known for its docks, but that doesn’t mean its without them! I’m sure they reek of fish, just like any other place where fishing boats sit (no offense, Fishy!).

“What else could there be???” you ask. Well, we got everything above land, so time to head below! The underground tunnels we venture through in game may well be based on very real Catacombs of Paris. These famous catacombs include a series of tunnels underground the city that contain human remains. Spooky!

Lastly, we can’t forget about all the artwork! I mean, this is Counterfeit Island after all, home of our friendly neighborhood art thief. In the Museum Fantastique, we see many well known paintings, including (but not limited to) The Scream, Starry Night, and Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies. And that’s not even mentioning the (spoiler alert) paintings in the secret room at the end of the quest!

Did you know that Edvard Munch created four versions of The Scream, two in paint and two in pastels? One of the painted ones is in The National Gallery in Norway, and the other is in The Munch Museum.

It would be quite a hassle to include all the artwork in this post, but be sure to check out our Ancient Artworks of the Counterfeit Island Museum tour for a closer look at them all if you’re interested!

While not all the displayed paintings correspond, I think it’s safe to assume that this museum was inspired by France’s most famous museum: The Louvre. In fact, this art museum is the largest in the world and displays such pieces as the Mona Lisa! However, the museum in Poptropica is certainly not as grand as the real thing.

I hope you enjoyed this post, because that just about wraps up our real-life tour of Counterfeit Island! I kinda want to visit France now…

What did you think? Have you ever seen these famous paintings in person, or been to any art museum? How about France? Be sure to let us know which island you want us to feature next in this series, as well as what places you think other islands resemble!

Au revoir!

You can play right now with the Early Access Pass! It’s available in the Poptropica Store for 500 credits. Ask a parent to buy credits or earn them by solving other islands.

Some of the world’s most famous artwork is on display at the island’s museum, but rumor has it someone’s out to steal it. Can you explore the dark and dangerous side of Counterfeit Island and save the day in this crackling canvas caper?

So, those of you who have the credits and can’t fight the irresistible urge to buy the Early Access Pass, go ahead and buy it!  I can’t, sadly, because my mom won’t buy any credits for me. T_T =P Oh wellz… I guess I can wait until January…. or I can go to another account and do it! YESH! 😀

Well, I’m gonna go and search through my huge list of poptopica accounts that have credits, so I’m ending this post.  Have fun on Counterfeit Island, everyone!

EDIT: I’m on Counterfeit Island on one of my other accounts, and it’s awesome. 😀 It turns out it is a somewhat French-themed island, because one of the characters actually said Bonjour! 😛 Here is a screenshot of the island:

This is what it looks like on the map when you unlock the island:

The post also said that it was posted by Director D., but then says ‘posted by the one and only Shark Boy’ under it. (Thanks for the notice, Blue Dragon!)  XP, I think the Creators are either getting mixed up or are putting on a ‘Counterfeit’ name, eh? 😛
That video is seriously creeping me out… I have no clue if I want to play Counterfeit anymore… well, okay, maybe I do, but if there is a possible way that you can go without the lights going dark an someone attacking you I’m going that way… lol… well, I have nothing left to say, so, Neat Whale out!
