Face it: masks save lives ๐Ÿ˜ท

Hey Poptropicans, it’s Slanted Fish here to unmask some updates on July’s new member gifts, store items, and the return of an island! Let’s get started.

It’s the start of a new month (did the time almost slip past you?), which means a new set of member gifts! And this time, Poptropica has joined the pandemic panic with a set of Fun Face Masks. Summer vibes have also arrived in the form of a Flamingo Floatie and Watermelon Purse.

With the face masks, you get three in one: there’s one patterned with the blue mouth of Medicine Man from Shark Tooth Island, a translucent light blue mask that’s also worn by one of the merchants on Arabian Nights (hey, I thought member gifts were supposed to be original items!), and a green monster-like jaw, which doesn’t seem to have a connection to any island.

Non-members, don’t worry โ€” you can get in on the face mask fun too! There’s a new item in the store called the Friendly Face Masks, which comes in with three variations and costs 250 credits. Interestingly, the item card says “Member Gift” on them, indicating that they were probably intended as such at first before the Creators did us a solid by making these bad boys available for everyone. These come in red, white, and black:

Plenty of other items have popped up in the store as well. The good deals to grab this week for 75 credits each are the Fruity Cutie, Lazy Days* (seriously aesthetic pineapple shirt alert! ๐Ÿ), Dangerous Waters, Cool Boy Plush, and Coconut Drink. Also noteworthy: the plush of the character formerly known as Shark Boy is now simply Shark Plush*. Fireworks* have also hit these virtual shelves in time for the Fourth of July! ๐Ÿงจ Scroll down for the full list of items.

This week’s items are:

  • Costumes: Friendly Face Masks, Boho Chic*, Fruity Cutie, Lazy Days*, Dangerous Waters, Waffle* (round), Waffle* (square), Lumberjerk (female), Lumberjerk (male) (oddly, this one is tagged Poptropolis), Game Show Robot*, Cool Boy Plush, Shark Plush*, Rockstar, Furry Monster 4* (somehow there are two different costume cards both with this name), Mech Pilot* (oddly, this one’s carrying a fish), Tofu Dog, Hot Dog, Big Burger
  • Followers: Dolphin*, Deer, Mini Astroknight, Dryad
  • Powers: Raven Swarm*, Hypno-Powder, Fireworks*, PopGum (fire)
  • Pranks: Octo-Prank, Hypno-Powder, Zombify!*, Silly Streams
  • Misc: Coconut Drink, Cool Boy Plush, Shark Plush* (yup, these plushes appear here too), PopGum (fire)

A * indicates the item is members only.

In other news, Timmy Failure Island is back to being available for allโ€”but only on Poptropica’s Haxe build! (Thanks to PERCY JACKSON1010 for the tip.) This means that non-members can now venture into its common room store and see Quippy in Timmy’s iconic red scarf.

That’s all for this post! But stay tuned… we’ve got some great festivities planned for this month here on the PHB. Here’s a hint: you may want to get your Poptropican dressed up. Maybe a face mask would look dope with your ‘fit. If you’re venturing out IRL, though, you’ll definitely need one! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜ท

Get equipped with Quippy’s common room stores ๐Ÿ‘ฝ

Hey Poptropicans, have we got a lot to look at this time!

In addition to the monthly rotation of store items, four new shops have popped up around Poptropica, each with their own themed items. Plus, the game’s showing signs of progress on the friends feature, and for the first time in a long time, we even get to see some official concept art. Let’s explore!

First, let’s take a tour of the new shops, which are all located in various common rooms on different islands. These common room stores feature themed items for those islandsโ€”some new, some we’ve seen before. However, these stores are only available in Poptropica’s Haxe Javascript build, and are unlikely to be made for Flash, which will soon be obsolete.

These common room stores are available on four islands so far: 24 Carrot, PoptropiCon: Episode 1, Survival: Episode 1, and Timmy Failure.

Our first stop is the cinema on 24 Carrot Island. You will find Quippy hovering by the entrance. They’re offering Dr. Hare-themed goodies for sale: Hare Hotshot (which was the former BETA Carrotene bonus for members who helped beta-test the sound-updated 24 Carrot Island), Dr. Hare Plush Toy, Light & Shadow Hare*, and the Rabbit Ear Prank*. (* = members only)

While waiting in line to get into PoptropiCon (Episode 1), you can stop by the Facili-Tee store to buy cool costumes such as theย Tinfoil Robotย and theย Supernova (basically recolored from a Tron ad). You can also show your love of Old School Islands by wearing theย Lunar Colony Cosplay* and Game Show Cosplay*. Quippy is ready for the convention with their own adorable cardboard cosplay!

While traveling in our blimp, we get caught in a storm and become stranded in the snowy forest of Survival Island (Episode 1). Thankfully, weโ€™re not alone. A wooden Quippy can be found at the frozen pond under the big tree to the right. They’ll offer feathery friends like theย Blue Woodpecker followerย and theย Owl Head Rider, as well as aย Ghillie Suit*ย and aย Frozen Body power*.

Our final stop is Timmy Failure Island. The bad news is that Timmy Failure Island is only available to members. The worse news is that you need to have aย membership on an account in Haxe Javascript, as Flash-made accounts are separate from ones made in the newer Haxe build.

If you have an active membership on a Haxe Javascript account, you can access the island and its common room. Though Quippy looks as if they came out of a garbage truck, the store items are anything but trash. We have aย Total costume, aย Seรฑor Burrito follower, Timmy’s iconicย red Scarf*, and a mightyย โ€œGREATNESSโ€ banner*.ย (Strange to list some items as for non-members when the whole island and its store are for members only!)

You can do more than shop in common rooms, of course. The Creators are hard at work implementing the friends feature to the new Poptropica, and new Haxe players now have a fourth dialogue with Amelia when they first land on Home Island: to meet new friends!

In common rooms such as the Blast-off Arcade, you can befriend other players by selecting โ€œWant to be friends?โ€ from the chat menu. If they say yes, you’ll even get a pop-up message saying the friend was added successfully! (It might also say the user isn’t registered, if that’s the case.)

Despite this, the player profile and friends page aren’t ready just yet, so there’s no way to view your friends on Haxe at the moment. But the signs are there that this popular feature is being worked on!

Over on the Creators’ Blog, the Creators shared an inside look on how they created the adorable Quippy. Early concepts show the artists figuring out how to show players the common room stores โ€” did they want a droid, a kiosk, or something else? Once they settled on a droid, they chose some of their favorite designs and explored them further…

All this hard work and creativity culminated into one of the most unique and adorable faces in Poptropica. A friendly droid equipped with a luminous smile and a keen fashion sense. The magnificent Quippy.

The Creators ended their post with a word of encouragement for budding artists and avid gamers:

If you love games and art, consider learning more about becoming a games artist! There are a lot of ways to get involved in the making of video games outside of coding, and game artists are a critical piece of the team. After all, what’s a game without the art!?

That wraps up this post! What do you think of Quippy and the presence of all these new stores? Thoughts on Poptropica’s Haxe build so far? Share in the comments, and if you haven’t yet, catch up to our other posts below!

Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

2015 Rewind: Islands, Events, and More!

poptropica2015

Hey guys, Slip here.

Wow, another year has already passed. 2015 is coming to an end, and what better way to bring it to a close than toย reflect and look back to all that’s happenedย this year?

happynewyear

2015, for Poptropica, is one of its awesome years. They reached a lot of milestones and new developments that made our game experience better than ever. This post is divided into three parts: the islands, the Poptropica milestones, and the PHB events.

Islands &ย Episodes

In 2015, weย had a total of 4 new islands and 2 new episodes! From the forty thieves to space pirates to robot rulers, there was a lot for Poptropica adventurers to experience this year. Let’s take a look!

Arabian Nights Episode 2: Lair of Thieves

Poptropica started the year with releasing the second episode of Arabian Nightsโ€”one of the best episodic adventures we’ve had. It was definitely challenging, heart-stopping, and mysteriousย all at the same time. In this episode, everything was well done, making for an enjoyable experience. (You can check out our review here!)

Galactic Hot Dogs Island

Poptropica also launched aย brand new sponsored island early on in the year: Galactic Hot Dogs. To be honest, Galactic Hot Dogs Island is one of Poptropica’s easiest islands, and its lack ofย challengeย plus its being a sponsored island with a very contrasting art style made it rather unlikeable for many Poptropicans (in fact, it was voted Worst Poptropica Island in the PHB’s Poppies event!). Still, Poptropicaย brought a new island with a distinct story and a light challenge to all.

PoptropiCon Episode 3: Reign of Omegon

After releasing Galactic Hot Dogs to everyone, PoptropiCon’s concluding episode followed next. Now this wasย one amazing episode. Everything worked out well and Omegon played effectively as the story’s antagonist. I believe Poptropica made sure that this island would be remarkable; itย definitely was one of the better ones and even inspired our April Fool’s prank this year!

Mystery of the Map Island

Inย May, a new island dawned on Poptropica. Based on the Poptropica graphic novel, you could say thisย island is a hybrid of both original and sponsored island.ย I enjoyed how our player is added to the plot. The downside wasย that the graphic novel hadย already been released, which meantย everyone was already awareย of what was going to happen. Still, the island was cool to play, and the design was well made. (Read ourย review of this island here!)

Arabian Nights Episode 3: Careful What You Wish For

Wishes do come true, as the ending ofย Arabian Nightsย showed us. I would consider this episode one ofย Poptropica’s finest works. Poptropica made everything top-notchย in this episode โ€” the story, the characters, the gameplay and even the design were all so amazing! Plus, Samhal the comedic genie gave us a lot of laughs along the way!ย (Read the PHB’s review here!)

Timmy Failure Island

This island isn’t a complete failure; it’s actually greater than expected! Sponsored islands have a down-factor since they aren’t an original Poptropica story, but this island defied the paradigms of the sponsored islands! From its wacky characters to itsย hilarious whodunit storyline, this island didn’t fail to meet our expectations. As far as sponsored islands go, this is one of the best.ย As a plus, it even came with aย weekly giveaway!ย (Check out ourย review here!)

Escape From Pelican Rock Island

We’ve been through a lot of prisonsย in Poptropica. Most of the time, prison security was a joke. Not so withย Pelican Rock Prison! The year ended wonderfully with this island, which brought on aย unique storyline with fantastic designs, particularly of the individual characters. Poptropica clearly worked hardย on this island, and I believe this is the best island of 2015. ๐Ÿ˜› (Catch the PHB’s review overย here!)

That brings us to the next part: Poptropica’s milestones of 2015!

Poptropica’s Biggest Momentspop realms

PHB Events

Look back through the parties, events, milestones, and even fan art contests! Here’s a slideshow of variousย PHB events we’ve had through the year:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This year was a big year for other reasons โ€“ namely a strongerย reunion of the PHN.

UiPE bringing back a weekly series really helped out with inspiring the community again like Poptropican Portraits did once. Last year, HP reflected that heย wanted the community to be more community centered, and in the past year we have gotten a lot of awesome community help. Trusty Biker helped out with the PHN website, Ylimegirl did a load of work on the Poptropica Wiki, and remember the fan art contests UiPEย and HPuterpop held?

The Poppies was an awesome awards show โ€“ we really enjoyed seeing what you guys, the community, collectively preferred. Weโ€™re excited for next year!

We also joined forces with We-Love-Poptropica on deviantArt, the biggest Poptropica fan art community, fulfilling our goal to focus on the arts. Plus, starting in July, we picked up our Magazine series again, this time publishing The POPCORN in PDFs.

Here’s a timeline of some of our majorย events, too!

phb2015

Wow, a lot of things have come down in one year and things have gone so fast. Time really flies when you’re having fun, eh? It’s really a great time to reflect and ponder all of the things we’ve done this year.

Looking forward to the new year, here are a couple ofย our next aspirations:

  • A better glitch community. Free for all!ย (And more on the way!)
  • More active viewers โ€“ PHB lurkers, start commenting more on our posts! Thatโ€™s the only way we can improve. ๐Ÿ˜€

Here at the PHB, it’s our privilege toย bring you the best Poptropica news as we can.ย Hope y’all enjoyed this year-end recap! 2016 is going to be an awesome year!

๐ŸŽ‡ Happy New Year, Poptropicans! ๐ŸŽ‡

Photos to Chase after for some Halloween fun!

Hey Poptropicans! Spooky spectacles are afoot!

Black Widow has been hinting at something to come to the Photo Booth: “It might not be a bad idea to start practicing your Halloween photos in the Photo Booth. But perhaps we’ve said too much… for now.” Are the Creators trying to one-up us with a Halloween contest of their own??

Whatever’s up with that, it can’t hurt to make something cool with the Halloween props in the Photo Booth on Home Island, because it might just win you a free membership if you enter the PHB’s 7th Annual Halloween Contest!ย It doesn’t end ’til Halloween. Check out this PHB post for all the details!

There’s also a Magnus Chase ad on Main Street of Mythology Island. (Magnus Chase is a new book series by Rick Riordan.)ย To win this mini-game, just run up to the top-right corner and hop into the blue portal! Watch out for the Ratatosk and raven along the way.

When you get there, you’ll win aย Ratatosk Followerย and a costume (Sam for girls; Blitzen for boys)!

magnus chase

Plus, album photos for Timmy Failure Island (walkthrough here) are now available! The island came out a month ago for members without photos, but better late than never โ€“ although, why does only one picture get a caption? ๐Ÿ˜›

In other news, Poptropica’s Twitter is no longer in the hands of Poptropica CEO Jess Brallier! According to this tweet, someone else on the Poptropica team now manages all their social media. Hmm.

Another tweet from Poptropica tells us that there’s been an update in Realms: “Monsters now eat, can become nicer, and will drop Poptanium when full!” Check out our Poptropica Realms Guide for more tips and tricks about Realms!

Hope you’re enjoying the fall & Halloween-themed makeover on the PHB! ๐Ÿ˜€

Stay popping, Poptropicans.

App, Store, Timmy Failure Island

Import your desktop Poptropican to the app & more!

Hi Gs,

The Poptropica app got a serious update today with lots of different features, namely a new import function that allows you to gain your appearance and name from the online version. However, this update is currently only available for Kindle Fire devices (probably has something to do with Amazon’s lax app approval system), so I was able to try it out first hand.

timmyFailureAppIcon

Do note that you have to create a new character to import the look, so the character you originally played on will be left alone. That means that you will have to replay the islands you may have completed on the original again on the imported character.

That said, it is simple enough: just click New Player, and then enter the age, gender, etc – until you reach the character look screen. A button is added – along with ‘Change All’ and ‘Change Colors’ – ‘Import Look’. Clicking this will open a screen that allows you to enter your User/Pass from the online version. Clicking accept, your tanned friend will appear. ๐Ÿ˜‰

poptropicaAppImport1

By the way, I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve been referenced on the Creators’ Blog – and I gotta say, it’s pretty funny. ๐Ÿ˜€ –

The costume you’ve painstakingly put together on the web? Your expertly coiffed hairstyle? Your perfect tan? Now you can take it all to go, in the Poptropica app!

There are a couple other added features as I before mentioned: Timmy Failure Island is now available to download, and a new “Fall Fashion” costume bundleย has been added to the mobile store.

poptropicaAppImport2

As per usual, the pack is $0.99 – which I am sorta abhorred by – but the costumes are pretty cool. Of course, these had already been released (sort of) on the online version of Hub Island and in the online store. Oh, wait. Weย haven’t covered the item ๐Ÿ˜› —

A new item has been added to the online store for both genders, answering the request by Slippery Raptor for us getting our hands on that lucky flannel from the replacement of the original Shop keeper (he’s still on the mobile version, just inside the shop). These are both 75 credits, but for some reason are in the gold cards section instead of costumes..? Either way, really neat costumes. And yes, the costume is the same for both genders – which is a little lazy. ๐Ÿ˜›

Remember, this update is only for the Kindle Fire at the moment. We’ll update you once its released for Android and iOS devices.
