March right in with member gifts and story features

Hello, everyone! March has finally arrived, and a new month means new member gifts. As always, active members will receive their gifts by logging in to Poptropica any time this month. Let’s take a look!

The March member gifts are admittedly simple but still pretty cute. The first exclusive item is a Handheld Game (sadly not playable), and the second is a Clear Backpack complete with school supplies.

Last but not least, members also receive three adorable Plush Hugs. These three plushies based on a bear, a cat, and a pig are as adorable as they are huggable. If you’re interested in owning these items and more, feel free to purchase a membership or enter the PHB’s Free Membership Giveaway!

Yesterday, the official Poptropica Instagram page featured more posts from talented fans. We have art starring iconic Pop characters such as Shark Boy and Ringmaster Raven (drawn by the PHB’s own Maryann), comedic creations like the Bardito and Dr. Hare’s transformation, and even some Poptropica-inspired costumes made in Animal Crossing!

That’s all for now, but there’s more news to come. Stay tuned for a behind-the-scenes look at a magical island coming soon this year!

Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

Community Creations: February 2021

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the February recap for Community Creations! February’s theme was Pretty in Pink (and the featured work is not in any particular order). Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Pink Baron by Emuuuuuuu

Right away, I think you guys know that I’m a sucker for word play. And because of that, I really love the concept behind this submission! Not only is it a clever play on Red Baron’s name, but experimenting with a character’s color scheme is always fun too. And, of course, it never hurts to throw in that Dr. Hare reference. Remind me never to do laundry with him! Find the artist often in the comments.

Sir Alice the Heart Knight by Barefoot Knuckle

Oooh, pretty! Dare I say… pretty in pink! I love the incorporation of the Heart Astro Knight costume in this design, and it was a great choice to have the knight’s makeup and hair continue that same color scheme. And I think that the sun set-ish background similarly matches well! Plus, it’s great to see a reference to the Poptropica novels, as those characters aren’t in the spotlight as often. You can definitely see Alice’s fierce personality shine through. Find the artist often in the comments.

Completely in the Pink by Silver Horse

Ah, next up is a costume submission! I love that not only does this include a perfectly pink Poptropican outfit, but there’s a purr-fectly pink pet outfit to match! That extra step in making a matching pair really goes a long way. And to continue that match, it’s noteworthy that the Poptropican has some animalistic features themselves to truly sell the duo. I love that both outfits feature ears, a horn, nose/whiskers, and even a tail! I love, love love it (and I’m not just saying that because of the heart motif)! Find the artist often in the comments and on Discord.

Neon Pink by BlazingAngel123

Did you think that you could get through this month’s theme without seeing at least one Dr. Hare feature? Of course not! But even so, this is certainly a unique take on the doctor we all know and hate love. Playing off of Nintendo’s upcoming Neon White game, it’s as if our favorite furry scientist was plucked right out of the world of Poptropica and placed directly into this new virtual universe. Plus, I’ll say it again… I am a true sucker for good word play. Anyway, I love the sickly bright shades of white and pink, and the new outfit design is just excellent. Find the artist’s DeviantArt here.

Flower Elf Queen by AdventurersNHunters

And here we have our last, but certainly not least, perfectly pretty submission! Taking a Poptropican who is known for their color scheme and totally changing it presents quite the challenge, but it was pulled off wonderfully in this design. Though we typically recognize the Elf Queen in her gorgeous green getup, I’d say that pink suits her just as well! I would love to see her in this flowery attire come spring time. The Twisted Thicket forest in full bloom must be breathtaking! Find the artist’s DeviantArt here.

Honorable Mentions

All these pink submissions were super pretty, guys! Wonderful job!

March: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is March’s theme? March’s theme is…

Ancient Egypt!

With the final Dream Island Contest winner recently being announced, what better time would it be feature Ancient Egypt as our theme? Secret of the Jade Scarab Island embraces the aesthetics and history of Ancient Egypt, and so I think that we should do the same in celebration. Though we have briefly visited Egypt before in Poptropica, this island will certainly present a whole new adventure!

You could take inspiration from Nabooti Island, the store’s Pharaoh or Mummy costumes, perhaps the Poptropica novels, or even the Secret of the Jade Scarab’s inside look itself, of course! Maybe, if we’re lucky, some of YOUR creations will even inspire the Poptropica Creators in the making of this new island! So, put on those ancient creativity caps and get to creating!

  • Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as you’d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, I’m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so don’t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Pop 5: My Favorite Islands 🏝

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by Dangerous DragonEnjoy!

Hello, DD here! Today’s hot pop-topic is all about favorite islands. I’ll be sharing my “Pop 5” picks in this post, but I’m also looking forward to seeing your comments about some islands that you love. (The PHB has a whole list of islands.) Let’s get started!

Map full of islands (picture: idk)

#5: Monster Carnival

I wished I could rank this island higher, but there are so many good ones. Anyway, the story starts out with a carnival needing your help, and the art really makes you feel like you are at a real carnival. At first I wonder, “where’s the monster part?” Then comes the delightful twist: they all are monsters, thanks to Ringmaster Raven! Scary!

It was very disappointing to see Raven tortured by his town. I wrote more about this in my other guest post, “Why Ringmaster Raven is a real hero.” The island could’ve been better if he’d gotten a better ending, with the town giving him some much-needed love. Still, the story is fascinating, the designs are impressive, and the difficulty is suitably challenging

#4: Survival

Survival reminds me of survivor shows, and I can feel the dangers of being out on the island as if in real life! The art is fabulous, and it’s good they don’t show too many ads, so it gives you the feeling of being stranded.

The story is truly chilling — and what a twist to find that we are the hunted. Scary and surprising! All in all, a really good and challenging island.

#3: Mocktropica

Mocktropica reminded me of Back Lot Island but with games instead of films. The jokes were fun, and interestingly, one feature they made fun of made it into Pop: the pets!

As for the art, it really feels exciting and adventurous. Everywhere you see Mega Fighting Bots and you wonder what’s up with that, but then you find out the twist — shocking! The people running Pop were the people destroying it!

And the story itself is a unique, creative concept: you have to basically save Poptropica by bringing in the people who worked there to fix it. It’s also highly difficult — I still remember Thinknoodles groaning when he played this island.

#2: Mission Atlantis

I loved how Mission Atlantis mixed fiction and nonfiction. It reminded me of the book Thea Stilton Special Edition: The Journey to Atlantis.

The first episode was simple, but it was fun getting to know many animals in the sea. The art is amazing: the creatures look very detailed, our submarine pod looks cool, and the water design is epic.

The story starts out with us getting a simple job but we soon discover much more: an entire ancient underwater city! Things get a lot more interesting, and it makes you feel like you are an explorer. It’s a difficult island, but that’s what makes the challenge fun.

#1: Time Tangled

Time Tangled was my first island, so I think of this as my birth island. It’s all about exploring the world, from caves to the Great Wall of China! This was the island which made me love Pop. I love stories about time traveling and the future!

The story is basic but it is creative. We find all the objects in random places, with hints from the Oracle, and overall it engages you in checking everywhere to search for the items.
The art is really good too, and I enjoyed the Fact Monsters back when that was a thing. And the whole island really takes your attention, but it’s not too difficult, with no twist.

That’s my list, now what about yours? There are a lot more good islands but I prefer these. Anyway, tell me about your favorite islands!

And if you’re feeling especially passionate, try writing for the PHB! Writing is a good habit, especially when it’s about what you love. I love Poptropica, and look where I am now! Thank you to Jeff Kinney, because if he hadn’t created Poptropica, we wouldn’t be here.

Also, surprise: today is my birthday! If you want to help make it special, please share your ideas in the comments below on how to celebrate a pop-tastic birthday, Poptropica style!

A Poptropica cake is a great idea!

This is DD popping out! Keep popping, Poptropicans! ~DD

Ramble Review: Lunar Colony 💫

Heyo Poptropicans, and welcome to another long overdue Ramble Review! This time around, I’ll be exploring the high-tech outer space world of Lunar Colony. 🔭

When I played Lunar Colony for the very first time years ago, my first impression of it wasn’t exactly a good one. I remember feeling annoyed by all of the airlocks especially; I could never figure out how to enter one building or exit another, and for some reason, it took me a good deal of tries before I was even able to land the Lunar Lander. I remember I got so frustrated with this island that I eventually gave up trying to complete it at all, and moved on to something else. But if I’d just held on a little longer, and managed to reach the ending of Lunar Colony, my whole perspective on it would’ve changed at once…

More recently, I decided to give Lunar Colony another shot. This time around, I understood it better, and was able to finally reach the end of the island. And when I saw the ending, with Commander Salerno whisked through the portal to the alien realm, with the flight director on the radio, announcing that it was time to bring you back home, I was more surprised than I’ve ever been at the end of an island.

“I know you were supposed to bring me back to Earth, but I’m sorry, that’s not my mission. My mission is through here.”

The main reason Lunar Colony’s ending stood out so much from other islands is because it’s one of very few, if not the only, island where you fail your mission (in a sense). From the beginning, your mission was to find Salerno and bring her safely home. But when you activate the alien portal at the end, the tables are turned, and Salerno ends up escaping once and for all. It’s a sad day for everyone.

Of course, Salerno’s escape did do quite a bit of good for PASE. Now that alien life has been confirmed, people are starting to regain interest in outer space, and the president has promised whatever money PASE needs to keep their space program going! What Salerno did was a heroic move, but the truth still remains that your mission all along — to bring Salerno back to Earth — didn’t end quite as expected, and it’s those final parts of the island that really make Lunar Colony stand out in my eyes.

Believe it or not, I’m walking on air.

But enough rambling about Lunar Colony’s ending. Although that is the main reason I admire this island so much, it’s far from the only reason! Something else I thought was interesting about Lunar Colony is how it canonized the fact that Poptropicans’ eye colors can change. I’d wondered for awhile about Poptropicans’ eyes: why all Poptropicans’ eyes tend to stay the same, how there are hardly any customizable eye parts, and yes, whether or not they can change color. It was definitely a cool addition to see a Poptropican’s eyes turn purple!

It would be cool to see an option to change eye color added to the Colorizer someday 👀

Something else I found intriguing about this island is how it, similar to Astro-Knights, focuses on outer space — except the two islands couldn’t be more different. While Astro-Knights mainly features the clockpunk genre, Lunar Colony takes a scientific approach on the cosmos. Lunar Colony’s world seems to be in a much more modern, technological era, as opposed to Astro-Knights’ medieval theme.

Outer space is a vast place, and there have been an array of stories taking place beyond the stars. And in my opinion, Lunar Colony is definitely one of those stories that deserves more appreciation than it got. Even though the gameplay is admittedly frustrating at times, and even though not many people think of Lunar Colony when they think of Poptropica’s greatest islands, it’s the plot (combined with an assortment of beautiful outer space artwork!) that ties this whole adventure together and makes it one of the most intriguing Poptropica islands to ponder over. 🚀🧑‍🚀

Home Island

Adventurers outfitted on a new Home Island

Hey Poptropicans, a new Home Island is on its way! 🏡

Yup, never mind that this base stop has been redesigned multiple times in the past several years. The latest Home Island remodel features a short side-quest, fewer buildings, and two blimps.

The Pop Creators posted sneak peeks on the official blog and said it was currently in beta testing and would be released to all soon, but you can access it right now by playing on a new account.

As for the side-quest, it begins immediately and is fairly quick. Catch what happens on our new Home Island Guide or in this video from idk:

You might remember those statues from an earlier sneak peek. When you first land on the island, Amelia Earhart (yes, she’s still here, and she has her own statue now!) gives you a Novice Adventurer Outfit.

The side-quest has you chase after a guy clomping about on giant robot legs for stealing the statue of the greatest Poptropica adventurer, Xavier, who has majestic squid hair. Turns out the guy is Xavier! He plans on retiring and gives you his cottage, which is your clubhouse. That’s it for “The Greatest” side-quest!

Back on the main street of the island, you can find the blimp is available on either side of the island, rather than in the middle. There are now just two buildings: Adventure Outfitters (i.e. the store rebranded) and your remodeled clubhouse. In the background, we can see blimps flying in the distance, as well as more homes on floating islands.

By the gate to your clubhouse’s backyard is a Poptropican crying for help — it’s the mayor from 24 Carrot Island, who calls you to help his island. Maybe there’ll be a different character there in the future!

The menu has also been touched up. Instead of the crate, we get three lines in the top-right corner, which pulls up the menu items, now with text labels: Items, Map, Store, House, Friends, Arcade (which no longer has its own building!), Messages, Pets (now barn-less), and Settings.

Only a day into this beta release of the new Home Island, and there’s already fan art for the iconic Xavier! The Pop Creators even posted a doodle from @invisible_b0nes on their Instagram story:

That’s it for this post, but you can catch more about the new Home Island side-quest (including glamor shots of Xavier) over on our Home Island Guide! What do you think of this Home Island makeover? Was it time for a change, or are the Creators overplaying this first stop once again? Sound off in the comments and on the PHC, our Discord server!

Pop on, Poptropicans! ✌️
