Inside look at Dream Island winner: Goofball Island 🏝🤪

Hey Poptropicans, we have a very special guest with us! Thirsty Flame (aka Blank Slayte, or BigMarioFan99 on DeviantArt) is one of the winners of Poptropica’s 2020 Design Your Dream Island Contest. In this post, he’ll be sharing about his winning idea, Goofball Island. Smile and wave!

The first glimpses of Goofball Island were revealed in September 2021.

Hello, this is Thirsty Flame, and I’m glad you asked me for an inside look about my island idea: “Goofball Island.”

I want to get this out of the way first, to those Poptropicans who are aged 13+ and seen some of the NSFW stuff I post on Twitter or DeviantArt, this island will have none of that. I mostly try to be safe for all ages, and most of the stuff I post is alright.

Crazy Club concept for Goofball Island from the Poptropica Creators

Now onto the island! To be honest, I haven’t really thought about how the island will be played, like levels and all that. All that I submitted was a visual (see below), and the basic plot of the island:

In a colorful and bizarre-looking town populated by joke-loving and silly citizens, the evil scientist, Dr. Blandston, has invented a device to take away the town’s color and goofiness. It’s up to you to defeat Dr. Blandston and destroy his machine before he can turn the entire island into a dull, gray, land.

I would like to imagine the island would play similarly to something like 24 Carrot Island, Mythology Island, or Monster Carnival Island. But, considering how new island quests like Fairy Tale Island use “side missions,” I’m not sure how Goofball will play out.

Still, I can tell you how I came up with the idea for Goofball Island. It was around the time the first Dream Island contest was happening in 2013, and I had gotten the Poptropica Island Creator Kit book to help me draw and write ideas that I had. My only problem was that I didn’t know how to send it, so I never entered my original idea.

See what other books Poptropica has released in our Merchandise Guide.

My original island was called “Toon Island,” and the plot was mostly the same one I used for Goofball Island, except someone was stealing Poptropicans’ sense of humor and you would find who’s doing it and stop them. I came up with ideas for the visuals, such as what the island would look like on the map

…as well as the medallion, two versions of the villain, and how Poptropicans look before and after their sense of humor is taken. Basically, for Goofball Island, I reworked my “Toon Island” idea and renamed it to “Goofball Island,” since I doubt they would’ve accepted an island named “Toon Island.”

Shortly after it was announced that my island won, I came with ideas on what I thought the logo for island would look like and reworked the medallion idea as well. I hope I’m close to being right with what Poptropica ends up creating.

With the official sneak peek of the island that was shown recently (and at the top of this post), I can say that it was exactly what I was hoping for, and I’m excited to play it when it comes out.

I do want to point out something in that sneak peek, specifically the building labeled “Bosko’s Car Fixing & Embroidery.” Coincidentally, I have an original character named Bosko, who is a mechanic. I made this character well before the second contest was announced. I’m not sure if this was a coincidence, or if they found my DeviantArt page and are using some of my characters.

“Bosko is Toon City’s best toon auto mechanic and can fix any toon car that rolls into his garage. Sometimes he’ll have some strange cases, but he will always get the job done.”

Either way, thank you for your interest in how I came up with Goofball Island! I hope it will be one of Poptropica’s memorable islands.

My Dream Island: Megatropolis by Invisible Ring

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by Invisible Ring. Enjoy!

Hey there, Poptropicans! It’s been a while, but I think I am ready to showcase my dream island!

Maybe a few of you already know a thing or two about my dream island from my backwater YouTube channel, or from the Poppies 2021 nominations. My original submission to Poptropica’s 2020 Dream Island Contest is found in this little video right here:

…It was the rush job of a lifetime. All those pages on the video were burned through in the last three weeks of the contest… during finals at the end of the school semester… while trying to make daily holiday advent videos at the SAME TIME!! …Although I was proud of what I made at the time, I almost lost my mind doing it!

The contest came and went, and although this island didn’t win, I’m glad it didn’t, because it gave me the chance to finish what I started. From the beginning of January 2021 all the way to the end of May, I fine-tuned my quest and completed my dream island once and for all. The last thing I did was compile my whole island story into new YouTube videos.

I’m much happier with these videos than I was with that old submission video. (I can’t even look at what’s in the old submission video anymore!) Anyway, enjoy Megatropolis Island told through comic panels in this trailer, five chapters, and even a bonus:

So, my dream island is complete at last, and I think it’s gonna blow your mind. But if you don’t have time to view it now, feel free to subscribe to my channel and check out my dream island comic videos (and any of my other videos) anytime you like!

Please let me know what you think of my dream island, either in this PHB comment section or in the comment sections of my videos! Thank you, and Pop to you later!

My Dream Island

My Dream Island: Cherryfall Island by Smart Icicle 🌸

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by Smart Icicle. Enjoy!

Hello! Smart Icicle here, and I would like to introduce my dream island. I already know a few of you wanted to see my dream island when I shared a bit about it in my “My Place In Poptropica” story. Now just sit back, relax, and I hope you enjoy my dream island: Cherryfall Island.

This story dates back to ancient China. When I first saw Poptropica release Red Dragon Island, which took place in ancient Japan, I just had to create a story in ancient China. At the time, I would go China almost every year to visit my grandparents. As for the name Cherryfall, it’s inspired by the cherry blossom tree, common in Japan and China.

Train Station: For training, that is.

Characters

In the island, you will meet a monk, shopkeepers, an empress, two imperial guards, and four prisoners. The monk is going to help the player, while the prisoners are the villains of the island. The empress is going to send the player to jail. The shopkeepers are minor characters (but will give the player a dress, watch, and any jewelry they like). The four prisoners are going to be key to the plot of the island.

Plot

During a time travel accident, the player gets stuck in ancient China. While trying to figure out what happened, a monk approaches the player and acts as their guide. The monk tells the player that prisoners have been escaping from their prison, and that they need to bring them back to jail.

The monk decides to take the player to the empress of China and tell them about the situation. Unfortunately, the empress was in a bad mood, so she decided to send the player to jail for bothering her. Will the player escape and gather the escaped prisoners? Or will the prisoners get to you first?

Nested: I know why the caged bird sings.

As for a plot twist… that will be at the very end. When the player and the monk finally find the escaped prisoners, they turn out to be familiar faces! You’ll come face-to-face with the fantastic four super villains: Dr. Hare, Captain Crawfish, Black Widow, and Binary Bard.

Inspirations behind the island

As I mentioned, I was inspired by my family’s travels to China. In particular, the dresses, earrings, and watches that our grandparents send to us every Christmas and birthday were in my mind as I thought up this island.

For the jail scene, I decided to add a bit of twist inspired by the Henry Stickmin games. For those who don’t know these games, you play as criminal mastermind and you have to make choices along the way to complete the game. This game is hilarious because of all the choices that don’t work, and that’s something I wanted to include in my island.

Cuckoo Birds: Don’t be a dodo.

Anyway, what did you think of my dream island? Also, be sure to vote in my poll, “Who is your favorite Poptropica creature?” The poll closes at the end of the month, which is coming up soon.

Lastly, check out my blog! I write about my fandoms, including Poptropica. That’s it for me now, Smart Icicle out! 📚❄️

My Dream Island

My Dream Island: Jedi Island (Mystery in Space) by Dangerous Dragon

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by Dangerous Dragon. Enjoy!

What’s popping, Poptropicans? DD here, and it is a warm bright day in the Pop universe. Today I’m going to show you my Dream Island! I did not enter this into Poptropica’s contest because I was a little inactive at that time, but hey, I’m bringing my creativity here. Let’s begin!

*clears throat*

First look

The story begins with a cutscene, where you are an astronaut in space. Suddenly, there is a blast, and your spaceship breaks. You are now floating in the open space, unconscious but alive.

Rocket Man: Try to keep from burning out your fuel up here alone.

You wake up in five or six hours, not remembering anything. Then a person dressed in black robes comes to you. You try to run, but your feet are swollen, so you can’t move. Just as the darkly dressed man reaches you, he assures you that he is a good man, and he is the captain of this Jedi spaceship you’re in. You can’t believe it! You are in a Jedi spaceship!

From there, the screen goes black. Next thing you know, they have treated your legs so that you can walk around! Then the action begins… walking around, you find the captain in his room, and he looks a bit concerned. Turns out the whole crew’s lightsabers are running out of power, and they’re not sure how long they can keep their operation afloat.

Being the smart, adventurous Poptropican you are, you volunteer to help. So you search everywhere, gathering clues to help the Jedi find fuel and crystals for their operation…

Locations

These are just a few of the places you’ll be visiting.

  • Launch site – This is where you’ll find many spaceships.
  • The cockpit – This is where the captain stays.
  • Planet Naboo – The place where you’ll find the crystals.
Hyperspeed: We’re going to infinity. But not beyond. That’s impossible.

Clues

As you help characters throughout the island, you’ll gain some helpful items and insights.

  • Keycard – you will get it by helping RW-22. This will help you open the room and look in the spaceship.
  • Repair kit for the spaceship – in the mechanic’s room. You’ll need it to repair the spaceship when it starts to break down!
  • A bone – for Princess Kopi (hello, Thinknoodles fans!), a dog you’ll meet on Fairy Tale Island (yes, the one currently in production… and yes, you’ll be traveling to different Pop islands!)
  • Dog tail – You can wear this, and when you tap the spacebar, the tail shakes and dances! You’ll need this to befriend a dog…
Photo Finish: Snapshots of happier times.

Characters

  • Captain Cyrus – The Jedi captain. You’ll be meeting with him throughout this island.
  • Ringmaster Raven (that’s right, our boy from Monster Carnival!): He’s good now. He’ll give you the crew’s lightsabers to fill them up with the crystals.
  • RW-22 – A droid who’ll give you a lesson on how to fly a spaceship and a keycard to open up a spaceship. He’ll only help you if you help him clean the captain’s spaceship in the launch site. There are loads of ships there, so you’ll have to explore them all to find the right one.
  • Co-captain Salerno – Yes, from Lunar Colony! She’ll be on the spaceship too (God knows how) and she’ll help you locate a planet you’ll need to find to save the ship.

Inspiration

To be honest, I don’t know anything about Star Wars, but I took some inspiration from a book called Star Wars Jedi Academy by Jeffrey Brown. It’s fun to read! I also liked Lunar Colony Island on Poptropica, which also inspired this island idea.

Wow, I enjoyed making this! I hope you liked my island, and feel free to share your feedback for what I can add! If you are interested in sharing your idea, you can comment below or create a guest post if you want to get detailed.

This is DD popping out. Keep on popping, Poptropicans! Pop on!

My Dream Island: Opposites Island by Noisy Snowball 🦋

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by Noisy Snowball (Inking 5). Enjoy!

Hey there! This is Noisy Snowball talking! This is my first guest post, and I’m super excited to share my dream island idea!

First, here’s how I got my idea: One day I was in online school, thinking about stuff. I had the concept of the butterfly effect on my mind, and Poptropica in my brain as well. The butterfly effect is the idea that a small change can result in larger differences later.

Anyway, I had a thought. Why not make an island using the butterfly effect as the main gimmick? It was perfect! I started writing as soon as I could. I call it: Opposites Island!

Plot

The player starts at what seems to be the ending of the island. You’ve managed to stop a scientist who was going to steal a dimensional travel machine. However, before everyone can celebrate, a portal sucks you away…

You wake up in a destroyed version of the island you just saved, and after walking, you spot another version of yourself! This other version of you says that the villain has managed to steal the device — while causing a lot of destruction, which didn’t happen in the original dimension. You agree to help this version of yourself stop the villain.

Soon you both notice that there are two versions of the villain, who seem to have teamed up, are switching between dimensions. Now, you and your double must solve puzzles and platforms to stop the villains!

Plane to See: Sometimes a simple machine isn’t too simple.

Near the end of the island, there would be a final boss fight, where you and your double must stop the teamed-up villains. Afterwards, both versions of the villain would be captured, both you and your double would get a medal, and you would say goodbye to your double.

The double trouble gimmick

The main gimmick with this island is that both versions of you would act in opposite of each other. For example, if you pushed a box to the right on the not-destroyed island, the box would be instead on the left for the destroyed island. Everything would be in reverse, and you would have to use that as an advantage to solve puzzles.

Do Not Enter: Why doesn’t anybody ever pay attention to the signs?

This island would really show how a simple choice can really change things, and how to look at things and imagine how things could have gone differently. That’s the butterfly effect!

That wraps up my dream island concept! This is Noisy Snowball, guest writer, signing off!
