Pop Petitions

Pop Petition: Craving the crate and bothersome bugs off the menu 📦

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by Dangerous DragonEnjoy!

Hi Poptropicans, DD here! (Gosh, it’s been a while.)

So I’ve been seeing MANY MANY comments appearing everywhere about how Poptropica should stop making everything modern. Yes, I think that too. One of the things I’m surprised about is how they changed our nice little crate menu. So let’s get into it!

Poptropica has had this cool crate for a menu for years, and even before this version of it, each menu item had a nice little icon. But why change what wasn’t broken? I thought this was one of the best parts of the game; it was fun opening the menu and seeing all those icons…

…but with the latest Home Island update, the Creators replaced it with a modern-style hamburger menu. Basically just THREE LINES. That’s so boring. Now we just click the button and seeing the extremely long list. I don’t understand what the point of this change was.

Anyway, now let’s go to some of the other issues that have cropped up lately. There have been some really annoying bugs…

Let’s talk about those 30-second full game screen unskippable ads. Ok, I know this is Poptropica’s way of earning money, but there is one problem. Sometimes when you’re patiently waiting for the ad to end, it comes to the end and freezes near 0:01. Then you have to reload everything and watch it again. Come on!

Likewise, while editing your clubhouse, the screen often freezes. (It happened to me a thousand times!) Then, when you reload the screen and come back, most of the things are not saved. This needs to be fixed!

Unskippable ads dominate the game screen

Another issue that’s been happening to a lot of people is the black screen of death. Basically, sometimes when you log in, you get stuck on a black screen that never goes away and the game doesn’t load. When I first got it, I was literally crying and I remember sending the PHB a panicked email. Fortunately, it usually fixes itself by the next day. But it’s still disappointing!

Load, load for eternity…

You can also sometimes get around this by logging in on a different account. Meanwhile, wait until the next day to log into your regular account, and send a message to Poptropica support to get them to resolve the issue for you!

Last but not least, the plain pet glitch. For weeks now, pets have mysteriously been stripped of their clothing and custom coloring, and all pet clothing has been missing from our items. Plus, ever since the pet barn disappeared from Home Island, we haven’t been able to use the pet colorizer at all, making for some rather boring, uncustomizable pets. When will Poptropica fix this?

That’s it for this post. What do you think of the new menu? Have you been getting these annoying glitches? Share in the comments, and thanks for reading!

Keep Popping,
DD 💜

Popular Poptropican: Purple Paw

Howdy Poptropicans, it’s LJ back with another Popular Poptropican! Today I’ll be talking to Purple Paw as part of our PHB staff lineup of interviews. (Check out Spotted Dragon and Gentle Dolphin‘s interviews, as well as mine, if you haven’t already!) She was one of the founders of Ramble Reviews, does a variety of other fun posts on the blog as well, and we’re happy she’s on the team. Now let’s get into it!

1. What do you enjoy about blogging with the PHB?

I enjoy having such a big audience in the Poptropica community to share news, theories, tips, facts, and my own creations with. I’ve learned much more than I expected since starting out. Plus, it’s cool getting to connect with Poptropicans all over the world! Receiving the invitation to join this team was definitely the most excitement I’d had in awhile, and writing for the PHB has been an awesome experience thus far.

2. What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers or writers in general that you wish you had starting out?

A helpful tip I wish I’d used in my earlier posts is to start with the necessities. I would often jump right in and try to create a finished, revised version of a post right off the bat–but unfortunately, that’s not how it works with writing. If your first draft of writing doesn’t please you, don’t start over right away. Instead, finishing writing down your ideas and everything you’re planning to cover before you start adding special words, notes, images, etc.

There’s always time to go back and fix something after you’ve finished with the first draft, but it’s much harder to go back and fix an issue before you’ve finished laying down the necessities; otherwise, it’s likely you’ll get caught up in one part and forget everything else you were going to write. You gotta bake the cake before you add the frosting. 🎂

3. What is your favorite island and villain?

My favorite island’s always hard to choose, as there’ve been a huge assortment of amazing ones over the years. But in the end, I would probably have to go with Red Dragon, because of all its beautiful scenery and the ninja gameplay — and because of the nostalgia I get from a Magic Treehouse-based island. However, even though it’s one of my top favorites, I don’t believe it’s the best island in general. That, in my opinion, would have to be Ghost Story. Ghost Story had an intricate and memorable story I’ll never forget; one of Poptropica’s true masterpieces.

As for my favorite villain, I definitely loved Daphne Dreadnaught — I always thought she deserved more showtime than she got in the Ghost Story prequel, Spook Central. I also liked Mademoiselle Moreau, mainly since her motive behind her villainy is easy to understand.

4. What challenge in the game has been the hardest to complete in your opinion?

Probably one of the many gear-filled puzzles in Steamworks. Although I did quite like the island as a whole, the mini-games were definitely frustrating at times, the multiple steam terminals in particular. It also took me a very long time to complete Skullduggery (although I found it was easy to get into a rhythm after a little while of trying at it).

5. What is your favorite feature (still here or gone) from the many years of Poptropica?

That’s another hard question. While the islands are certainly the real gems of the game, side ideas such as Tribes were also fun to engage with. I thought it was cool to have a feature where players can proudly wave their flags and compete in an Olympic Games-like event, and even access special common rooms just for them and their Tribemates! I hope the Creators incorporate Tribes again in the future. Go Nightcrawlers! 🌙

6. What is your favorite Poptropica item?

Out of all the amazing items you get to collect throughout the islands, I would have to say the Jetpack from Early Poptropica. It sure was fun to whiz across the city without touching the ground! The stopwatch from Super Villain was also an intriguing object…(I really can’t choose just one of anything, can I?)

Out of the purchasable items in the Store, however, I always did love the many flavors of PopGum; I remember when I was younger I could never get enough of repeatedly hitting the space bar to watch bubbles float around the screen. Now that I think about it, I probably crashed the game once or twice doing that. 🤭

7. What is your favorite Poptropica Easter egg/secret/reference?

This one doesn’t come directly from the game itself, but the binary code at the bottom of every Binary Bard post on the Creator’s Blog was one of my favorites. I unfortunately didn’t engage much with the Creator’s Blog at the time they were posted, but more recently I revisited older posts and found the clever references to Bard’s name. All those mysterious 0s and 1s…

Oh, and of course I can’t leave without mentioning our true lord Beev! Pop simply wouldn’t be the same without him.

Fanfiction, The Villain Saga

“The Villain Saga” – Episode 2, Part 1

(Table of contents) (See previous)

FADE IN.

INT. EREWHON PRISON – NIGHT

We see a very cluttered lab, filled with important scientific instruments as well as random glittery trinkets. A woman sits at her desk alone, dressed in a wrinkled lab coat, several empty energy drinks littered around her.

DR. JUPITER enters the room, holding a cup of morning coffee, and glances at the window.

DR. JUPITER

Have you…been working on that all night?

WOMAN

Yup!

(She jumps out of her chair.)

And I think I’ve found it, I’ve really got it this time! I mean, I hope–it didn’t go so great before, but I’m (almost) positive now!

DR. JUPITER

Cut to the chase, show me it.

Popular Poptropican: Gentle Dolphin

Howdy, Poptropicans! It’s LJ here with Gentle Dolphin in the third installment of our Popular Poptropicans – Poptropica Help Blog staff lineup. Gentle Dolphin joined the PHB a couple of years ago and has since stayed on top of reporting Poptropica news. In addition to that, you may recall her massive artistic involvement in our Flash Experience and “Smash! Crackle! Pop!” pranks. Let’s get to know her even further, shall we?

1. What do you enjoy about blogging with the PHB?

I like being able to work with other people who have similar interests, even if those interests are as niche as a 2007 computer game. Some of my favorite PHB memories involve partying in the PHC Discord server and creating wonderfully dumb April Fool’s pranks (the 2020 prank being my favorite).

2. What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers or writers in general that you wish you had starting out?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help or critique; it’s nice to have feedback before you publish your work. On the flip side, trust your instincts if you think something will enhance your writing.

3. What is your favorite island and villain?

Big Nate is my favorite island nostalgia-wise, Ghost Story is my favorite island story-wise, and Super Villain is my favorite island design-and-concept-wise. As for my favorite villains, it would be the Super Power Island crew. Although they aren’t the most complex villains, they are a fun collection of villains to take on. Also, BlazingAngel123‘s take on them made me love them more.

4. What challenge in the game has been the hardest to complete in your opinion?

For me, that challenge was the Thunder Volt arcade game from Wimpy Boardwalk‘s bonus quest. It’s the only bonus quest I haven’t completed. Sorry I couldn’t help you, Greg. 😢

Thunder Volt

5. What is your favorite feature (still here or gone) from the many years of Poptropica?

I agree with many fans that the biggest lost feature is the multitude of islands. As Lone Axe said it best, the game feels gutted ever since the death of Flash. The Creators are hard at work converting everything to Haxe, but it’s going to be a while until we see everything come back.

6. What is your favorite Poptropica item?

That’s a hard question to answer since there are hundreds of items in the game! If I have to pick one, it would be the Forest Amulet from Twisted Thicket Island. It’s a lot of fun to transform and harness the powers of nature, even if you can only use the amulet on one island. 😅

7. What is your favorite Poptropica Easter egg/secret/reference?

I’m not sure if anyone else knows about this one. When you visit Mother Leeds’s house on Cryptids Island, the dishes on the table will shake when you get close to them. It certainly spooked me when I first noticed it. 😱

Community Creations

Community Creations: April 2021

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the April recap for Community Creations! April’s theme was Bugs (and the featured work is not in any particular order). Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Computer Bugs Are Different From Regular Bugs by Noisy Snowball

Alright guys, you know I’m a sucker for a good pun. And this pun is right on the nose! Er, perhaps I should say “antennae” in this case? Anyway, I love the humor in this submission. What would you do if you were shrunk to the size of an insect?!? The variety of the bugs here is quite dynamic and the frustrated expression of the Poptropican really sells the joke. And given the recent “buggy” comparisons we’ve been able to make with Mocktropica recently, the theme is certainly apropos. Find the artist in the comments and on Discord!

Anansi by Sporty Boa

Not only does this submission relate well to our bugs theme, but it is also quite appropriate for the recent debut of Fairy Tale Island. This folktale trickster and god of stories is from the the Ashanti tradition in Africa and is most commonly depicted as a spider. I love how unique and representational this tale is, as well as the personality put into the design. The colors are playful and thematic, and seem to work really well with a Poptropican style! Find the artist here on the PHB and on Discord. Be sure to check out the Fairy Tale Island contest winners too for more cool art!

Poptropica Bugs by 12345rose18

Aw, cute! Who said bugs had to be creepy crawlies? The adaptation of the bee and ladybug into Poptropica costumes is perfectly executed. I can really see these as being available in the store! More than that, I appreciate the combination of traditional and digital art that the artist chose to incorporate. The colors are great and the design really stood out to me. Find their DeviantArt here.

Ain’t it Buggy by Silver Horse

Alright, let’s get into a costume submission now! Obviously this outfit screams BUG! Yikes! Don’t worry, I’m sure your room is mostly bug free at the moment… hopefully. Ahem, anyway, I love the combination of items used in this design. Though the Virus Hunter body may be an obvious choice, its pairing with the yellow eyes, green skin, antennae, and lack of mouth really sell it. You’re making my skin crawl over here! Find the artist in the comments and on Discord.

Binary Bard & Butterfly by icecream

You butter believe this submission should be featured! The smooth line-art and coloring really caught my eye here. I love the gentleness of the scene and the expression on Binary Bard’s face. And who doesn’t love an alliterative title? The delicate butterfly makes this a more subtle fit in our theme, but still a perfect one. Well executed! Find the artist in the comments and on Discord.

Honorable Mentions

Bah humbug! Time sure flies, but we’re unfortunately nearing the end of our post. Can you bee-lieve how great those submissions were? I think the Nightcrawlers would be proud. Hope all my puns didn’t bug you too much. 😉

May: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is May’s theme? May’s theme is…

Robots!

In today’s modern age, we are no longer strangers to rapidly growing technology. And in the world of Poptropica, robots are similarly no strange occurrence. Plus, if we’re being honest, robots are simply… cool! So perhaps robots (the more fun side of technology) make an appropriate theme when considering that many of us are wrapping up online school pretty soon (the more boring side of technology, at times).

Whether it be those hosting contests on Game Show Island, or Sprocket flying on Steamworks, or the mechanical Merlin from Astro-Knights, or… well, you get the point… they’re everywhere in Poptropica! Even Quippy has become a memorable Poptropica bot. So, let’s get to creating some robots of your own this month!

Go Go Robot: Just some of the ideas that would eventually become the Steam Robot costume in the Poptropica Store.
  • Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to both the theme and Poptropica.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as you’d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, I’m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so don’t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!
