PHB Tribal Tournament: Genius Games 💪🧠

Welcome, Poptropicans, to the second round of the 2020 PHB Tribal Tournament! (Don’t know what’s going on? Check out our introductory post.) Note: The first round, Creative Competitors, carries on for the rest of the month, so keep sending in the awesome artwork.

“No pain, no gain”? More like “no brain, no gain” because this round is here to get you thinking. And you’ve got to think fast, too, since this round ends in just one week (Monday, August 17). It comes in three parts, so opportunities abound to earn points for your tribe. Let’s dive right into it!

Caption Challenge

In this challenge, you’re presented with a picture, and your task is to come up with a caption to go with it. The concept is simple, but the execution will require some careful thought. Your caption can be funny, serious, and anything in between. Just be sure it’s not longer than two sentences!

Each person can enter up to three captions for the contest, with 10 points earned per caption. You could speak from a character or even an inanimate object in the scene, narrate as an onlooker, borrow a line from something in pop culture, make a self-aware comment—as long as it’s interesting, and it suits the picture. So what’s the pic? Here it is!

Tricky Trivia

For this segment, there are 20 trivia questions about Poptropica; some are easy while others are more difficult. You don’t need to answer all of them, but do your best! For every question you do answer correctly, you’ll earn 10 points for your tribe. That’s up to 200 points!

Points for this game are earned collectively as a tribe — not on an individual basis. So, if there’s one you’re not sure about, chances are that one of your tribemates is, and can score the points for your team!

For this specific game, make sure to send your responses to your tribe representative via direct message on Discord, or send us an email, so as to not spoil the fun for your fellow tribe members. It’s fairer for everyone to be able to guess at their own speed. 🙂

Oh, the places you’ll go! We travel far and wide across Poptropica aboard our little yellow blimp and see so many wondrous things. But, how well do we really pay attention to the details? For this game, your task is to pinpoint which island each of these snippets is taken from.

All pics are open to all tribes to guess! Each correctly guessed photo counts for 10 points within a tribe, not per person.

As with “Tricky Trivia,” please send your answers to your tribe rep through direct message or email. Be sure to clarify which picture(s) you’re guessing, using the labels.

Presenting the Creative Competitors MVP

Last week in our initiatory post, we said for each round we’d be recognizing a Most Valuable Player (MVP), someone whose dedication and enthusiasm stood out from the rest. This week’s shining star, who so far has already entered a number of costumes based on her tribe’s colors, as well as a few of her drawings, is Magic Flipper of Flying Squid!

The torch has been lit for the 2020 PHB Tribal Tournament! 🏹🔥

Welcome, Poptropicans, to the 2020 PHB Tribal Tournament! Can you believe it’s been 4 years since the last one? Although the Tokyo Olympic Games that were set to take place this year have been postponed until 2021, that doesn’t mean we can’t compete head-to-head… in Poptropica!

Here;s how this works: You pick a tribe (one of the 8 tribes from Poptropolis Games Island), then check the PHB for our competitions (we’ll have a new one each week this month) and compete for points for your tribe… and maybe even a Poptropica membership for yourself!

*The Tribes of Poptropica, from left to right, top to bottom: Flying Squid, Wildfire, Yellowjackets, Pathfinders, Black Flags, Nightcrawlers, Seraphim, Nanobots*. *Pick wisely, because in this tournament, you can’t switch sides!*

It’s more fun on Discord

Throughout the tournament, you can meet and hang out with your fellow tribe-mates (and competitors) through our kid-friendly, moderated Discord server, the PHC (Poptropica Help Chat). It’s free, quick, and easy to join!

On the PHC, we’ll have special chat channels for each tribe—to join yours, simply message a PHC staff member (PHB staff, PHC overlords, and guardians) to request the role of your chosen tribe and someone will add you in as soon as possible. No one outside your tribe can see your tribe’s channel besides PHC staff. You can use it to talk with new friends about anything from sharing your entries to the competitions to your ideal breakfast of champions!

Plus, each tribe will have a representative (mostly PHB staff) who you can message anytime with questions or just to have a friendly face who’s on your side in the tribal games. These are the reps for each tribe:

Now allow us to announce… the Creative Competitors round!

Round 1: Creative Competitors

It’s time to rally up some spirit and get artsy! To compete in Creative Competitors, all you have to do is create Poptropica fan art and share it with us. The best way to do that is to post it to your tribe’s channel on the PHC, but you can also contact us in other ways.

Each creation will be worth 10 points, so the more you send in, the more you’ll earn for your tribe! Acceptable art forms include:

Visual pieces (can be traditional or digital)
Written pieces (a fan fiction, a cheer, poem, song, etc.)
In-game costumes (see what you can do with your tribe’s colors!)

This round will transpire throughout the entire tournament — but don’t hesitate to start creating now! Incidentally, our theme for Community Creations this month is also Tribes, so if you can create something tribe-inspired, you’ll be entering two contests in one!

🌟 As we mentioned earlier, yes, you can win a membership! In each round, we’ll be picking an MVP (Most Valuable Player) whose participation we think stands out most, to win a one-month Poptropica membership. It could be you! 🌟

Many of you expressed a hankering for more community activities at the Poppies last week, so we hope you’ll have just as much fun participating in this quadrennial event. Stay tuned, because there’s more to come!

Road to Poptropica’s membership-laden future

Hi, everyone! Gentle Dolphin here bringing the latest news. Let’s take a look at some of the latest updates over on Poptropica’s Haxe build…

This feature is similar to the quest log from Poptropica Worlds. The main difference is that the Worlds quest log has a more detailed list of objectives, while Haxe’s quest roadmap only highlights the main story points. So far, the roadmap feature is only available on 24 Carrot Island, but it’s likely to make its way to other islands in the near future. For more in-depth guides, though, check out our written walkthroughs!

Remember the three loading screens that were added to the Haxe build last month? Well, they have been replaced with six brand new loading screens, full of Poptropicans flexing their fanciest selves:

These new screens look cool and give a sneak peek at some future items (bubble tea? AirPods??), but they highlight a key element that has been plaguing players for a long time: membership.

All but one of the new screens mention the incredible perks of having a membership (exclusive items, access to all islands, and so on). It’s no secret that these constant reminders leave many of us unamused and annoyed, especially since not many people are able (or willing) to shell out ~US$3.50 a month for extra items. Is Poptropica prioritizing membership over the general player experience? That’s an entire debate that’s been going on for years, and not dying down anytime soon, it seems.

On a lighter note, saving a new account now rewards you with 350 credits instead of 75 credits. This is a nice start for new players, so they can go ahead and buy more items like a new outfit or a few pet accessories.

Our final Haxe update is a rather odd one. When you walk around Home Island, you may notice that the area appears to have been cropped so you can’t see the outer edges of the island. This is most noticeable when you walk to the left and discover that you can not access the movie theater. I know the theater wasn’t too popular, but why would they basically crop it out of Home Island? Do you guys have any ideas?

Ever since the massive advertisement that was American Girl: Joss’s Island ran its course, some of us have been wondering when a smaller ad on would appear on Poptropica. Suddenly, a new advertisement magically appeared to charm players across both Haxe and Flash platforms.

Our new ad is for the upcoming Disney Channel movie Upside-Down Magic, based on the titular book by Sarah Mlynowski. Watch a short trailer to receive the adorable Dritten Follower.

See what’s in store on Pelican Rock 🐦

Hey, Poptropicans! This is Gentle Dolphin bringing the latest Poptropica news.

The Creators have been hard at work moving the game and its many islands to the Haxe platform. There’s been exciting development: Escape from Pelican Rock Island is now playable on Poptropica’s Haxe build!

The island is currently in early access, so only members can play it right now. On the bright side, it’s available to all players on the Flash version of the game. (Thanks to PERCY JACKSON1010 for the tip.)

Looking at the map, the next islands coming to the Haxe build will be Mythology Island, followed by Shrink Ray Island, as we previously reported.

Before you start your prison-break escapades, make sure to stop by Bert’s Basement Gym and check out its common room store with your a-droid-able friend Quippy. If cuteness is a crime, then Quippy is guilty as charged. You’ll find them accompanied by a pelican on their head and dressed in a classic striped prison uniform.

Three of the four items—Prisoner Costume, Pet Bird Follower, and Escapee Dr. Hare—were originally made to promote Escape from Pelican Rock’s release, but the Handcuff Toss is new! Equip it and press the spacebar to throw your handcuffs in the air like you just don’t care.

Common rooms aren’t the only stores receiving updates. The three other in-game stores received some updates as well.

This week’s Poptropica store lineup is mostly the same as last week’s, but a few items were swapped. In costumes, Dangerous Waters and Mech Pilot have been replaced with Clown and Fierce Lion*. Also, the creepy Zombify ability was swapped with the lovely Love Potion* in the pranks section.

The Pet Barn also boasts a lineup of new and old accessories for your precious pets. Our returning items this time around are Sorcerer Hat*, Flower Headband, Black Pointed Bangs, Round Glasses, Hero Mask, Grey Beard, Zomberry Eyes, Yellow Dead Eyes, Cute Blue Eyes*, and Big Brown Eyes*. We also have five new items: Reading Glasses, Green Cloak, Fairy Wings, Bat Wings, and Bandana.

Finally, the clubhouse store has a new array of familiar furniture and wallpapers. This time around, the decor store features 21 items, 12 of which are members-only.

Don’t forget that the Poppies 2020 nomination round ends tonight, so make sure to fill out our survey and let us know who/what you feel deserves to win an award. Maybe you want to nominate some of the new pet items for Best Pet Accessory, or your favorite furniture items for Best Clubhouse Decor. Get nominating before time runs out!

Face it: masks save lives 😷

Hey Poptropicans, it’s Slanted Fish here to unmask some updates on July’s new member gifts, store items, and the return of an island! Let’s get started.

It’s the start of a new month (did the time almost slip past you?), which means a new set of member gifts! And this time, Poptropica has joined the pandemic panic with a set of Fun Face Masks. Summer vibes have also arrived in the form of a Flamingo Floatie and Watermelon Purse.

With the face masks, you get three in one: there’s one patterned with the blue mouth of Medicine Man from Shark Tooth Island, a translucent light blue mask that’s also worn by one of the merchants on Arabian Nights (hey, I thought member gifts were supposed to be original items!), and a green monster-like jaw, which doesn’t seem to have a connection to any island.

Non-members, don’t worry — you can get in on the face mask fun too! There’s a new item in the store called the Friendly Face Masks, which comes in with three variations and costs 250 credits. Interestingly, the item card says “Member Gift” on them, indicating that they were probably intended as such at first before the Creators did us a solid by making these bad boys available for everyone. These come in red, white, and black:

Plenty of other items have popped up in the store as well. The good deals to grab this week for 75 credits each are the Fruity Cutie, Lazy Days* (seriously aesthetic pineapple shirt alert! 🍍), Dangerous Waters, Cool Boy Plush, and Coconut Drink. Also noteworthy: the plush of the character formerly known as Shark Boy is now simply Shark Plush*. Fireworks* have also hit these virtual shelves in time for the Fourth of July! 🧨 Scroll down for the full list of items.
