The Islands of 2015 – Ranked 10 Years Later 2๏ธโƒฃ0๏ธโƒฃ1๏ธโƒฃ5๏ธโƒฃ

Howdy Poptopicanos! ๐ŸคŸ This is LJ, and today I’ll be ranking the islands from 2015, a decade after they were released. There were only 4 islands that came out this year that I’ll be including in this ranking: Galactic Hot Dogs, Mystery of the Map, Timmy Failure, and Escape from Pelican Rock. Let’s see how they place!

(Please note, the final episodes of PoptropiCon & Arabian Nights were released in 2015 as well, but those islands were included in the 2014 ranking. Also, these are not full reviews of the islands; therefore, each analysis will be brief.)

#4: Galactic Hot Dogs Island ๐ŸŒญ

(released: January 30 for members & February 19 for all)

I’ll be honest, Galactic Hot Dogs Island never interested me at the time of its release and I don’t think I’ve ever gotten the urge to ever replay it. I do like the character designs and the colors are visually appealing to meโ€”the overall art style might even be better than the next island on this list. Still, that’s just not enough for me to rank this one any higher. Sorry Galactic Hot Dogs!

#3: Timmy Failure Island ๐Ÿปโ€โ„๏ธ

(released: September 17 for members & October 6 for all)

Just like Galactic Hot Dogs Island, this one also didnโ€™t grab my interest. I struggle to recall much about this island, aside from Timmy Failure’s pet polar bear, Total, who totally stole the show for being a whole mood. Total seems more likable than any of the characters from Galactic Hot Dogs, so because of that alone, Timmy Failure Island sits in third place. (Oh, and the mini-game where you have to dodge the trash from the garbage truck is one other thing I remember. That was pretty fun.)

#2: Mystery of the Map Island ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

(released: May 21 for members & June 11 for all)

Iโ€™ll be upfront and say that I have a positive bias towards this island. Why? Iโ€™m not entirely sure, maybe itโ€™s just the good vibes it gives off. The soundtrack definitely hits home for me as I remember playing this island over 10 times when I was younger.

Now, if you’ve read the first book in the Poptropica graphic novel series that this island is based on, you’ll see just how dull this island feels in comparison. It really doesn’t have much in terms of character or story development (which is a common theme for this year in general). Still, it’s not the worst island we’ve seen in Poptropica and it’s definitely an improvement over the last two islands on this list. Iโ€™ll admit again that Iโ€™m biased, though. I really like the characters Oliver, Mya, and Jorge for who they are beyond just this island.

#1: Escape from Pelican Rock Island ๐ŸŒ‰

(released: December 10 for members & December 30 for all)

Escape from Pelican Rock, in my opinion, was the last truly great island that Poptropica came out with. To me, itโ€™s even better than some of the islands that were released in what we all think of as Poptropica’s prime time. EFPR has a colorful array of characters and an engaging storyline centered around a jailbreak and clearing your name.

Although spending each day in the prison could feel a bit monotonous, I appreciate that there was always something slightly different happening every day. The island was challenging, but not to the extent that it caused a complete meltdown from stressโ€”just good fun. And let’s not forget that the PHB got a shoutout in the form of an easter egg! How awesome is that?

Unfortunately, 2015 was sort of the beginning of the end of Poptropica, so this wasn’t really a difficult ranking to make. Escape from Pelican Rock Island is the standout that’s really carrying this year, MotM is just kinda there, and the other two aren’t really for me.

Have you played any of these islands? Which one did you like the most and which one did you like the least? I’m especially curious to see the comparisons between Galactic Hot Dogs and Timmy Failure. Which one is better/worse for you, and why? Share your opinions in the comments down below. ๐Ÿ‘‡ Also, check out my other rankings of the Poptropica Islands if youโ€™re interested: 20082009, 20102013, & 2014 Thanks for reading, everybody…pop on and have a Happy New Year!๐Ÿ€

Pop Quiz: ๐Ÿ˜‡ Good or evil? ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Hey Poptropicans, pop quiz incoming! Head over to Escape From Pelican Rock Island and you’ll find a new pop-up stand right in front of Bay City Bank on Main Street asking: Good vs Evil โ€” Which are you?

Click to “Take Quiz” and you’ll get five fun questions to determine just how malicious of a person you are. The quiz is hosted on Interact Quiz Maker, so you can also visit its direct link here to take this pop quiz!

(Spoiler) If you answered like you’re an angel, your result is that “You’re a good one! Phew! You’re certainly not evil. High-five!” But if you pick even one of any of the guilty responses, you’ll get “Evil Villain! You’re a regular human who does questionable stuff sometimes. Unless you answered yes to the last question. You may be an evil mastermind!”

Thanks, BrittScarlet, for letting us know about the quiz update โ€” as well as this next one. If you check your Poptropica messages, you might find a new one that promises new games starting in January!

Also in your messages, you may find a notification about the announcement of the Design Your Dream Island Contest winner. In case you missed it, Fairy Tale Island is only the first of a few winners โ€” we’re still waiting to hear about the rest, which were supposed to be announced last week!

In other news, Poptropica rang in the new year with an art feature on their Instagram story: @capax_infini’s latest piece with Poptropicans celebrating. Here on the PHB, we also shared our latest Community Creations on New Year’s Day, including another piece from GEAR (capax_infini) featuring an anthropomorphic Dr. Beev with fan-made Dr. Nyah! A perfect intro for this month’s creation theme: Doctors!

If you’ve been traveling around Poptropica lately, you may have noticed the recent ad for The Croods popping up at inopportune moments, as its own ad scene with an incongruent background: the hand-drawn streets of Timmy Failure Island. You might come across it while entering and exiting buildings on Home Island, for example.

But recently, it’s gotten more ridiculous, even appearing right as you jump in your blimp. Tell me, Poptropica, why I’m having to cross the street before flying off to a new island? The game world might defy logic from time to time, but this much? What do you think?

Speaking of ads, there’s another one on the map: American Girl has returned, but this time as a bit of an Australian Girl. Check out our deep dive into American Girl: Kira’s Island, with all its authenticities and oddities, in the post below! See ya later, mate. ๐Ÿฆ˜

Tea time tangled with video unveiled

Hey Poptropicans, here’s the latest tea… *slow sip* โ˜•๏ธ Here we go!

It’s a new monthโ€”hello September!โ€”which means new member gifts! Members who log in this month will receive Earbuds (basically AirPods), Roller Skates, and three shades of Boba Tea. No special actions this timeโ€”not even on the skates.

This stuff’s pretty cool, but the name “boba tea” doesn’t hit quite right: it’s usually either “boba” or “bubble tea.” Bubble tea (or boba), in case you haven’t had the pleasure yet, is a tea-based drink invented in Taiwan with chewy tapioca “bubbles” and comes in many delicious flavors. Try it sometime!

Another win for the future of Poptropica: Time Tangled Island has been ported over to Haxe! It’s currently members only, but presumably it will be released for everyone at some point, since Escape From Pelican Rock Island was also just released for all after first showing up on Haxe for members only back in July.

Update: Unlike other Haxe islands, there’s no Quippy in the common room on the Haxe version of Time Tangled, which means no store of exclusive items. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ Will the Creators add it in the future? We’ll have to see…

September is a special month on Poptropica because it’s the game’s birthday month! You may recall a guest post on the PHB about a “Poptropica Month” of videos hosted by Dimension Bros on YouTube. The Poptropica Creators’ Blog has joined in the fun by spotlighting the event’s kickoff video! Watch it here:

It’s not often the Poptropica Creators give a shout-out to fan creators on the official blog, but it’s always a nice surprise when they do! They’ve shared some fan art from the community (some for their official contests, and others just for fun), but the last time a fan video was highlighted might’ve been back in 2017 with Thinknoodles’ Poptropica Worlds videos.

Anyway, the Creators’ Blog post promises more festivities to come, saying, “Check back here for more from the Poptropica Creators to celebrate our birthday month!” There’s something to look forward to! ๐ŸŽ‰

Whether or not you’ve ever made a Poptropica video before, you’re super welcome to join in on Poptropica Month. And stay tuned for more birthday celebrations!

Last but not least, the Pop Creators put out a question on their Instagram story this week, asking, “Do you play more games on your phone or on your computer?” If you’re on Instagram, you can let them know before the story disappears!

That’s all the tea we’ve got for you! Will you join us for Poptropica Month? Or Community Creations? (Our latest theme is “Masks”! ๐Ÿ˜ท) What island do you want to see ported over to Haxe next? And have you tried bubble tea? Share your thoughts with us on the PHC Discord or in the comments below!

See what’s in store on Pelican Rock ๐Ÿฆ

Hey, Poptropicans! This is Gentle Dolphin bringing the latest Poptropica news.

The Creators have been hard at work moving the game and its many islands to the Haxe platform. There’s been exciting development: Escape from Pelican Rock Island is now playable on Poptropica’s Haxe build!

The island is currently in early access, so only members can play it right now. On the bright side, it’s available to all players on the Flash version of the game. (Thanks to PERCY JACKSON1010 for the tip.)

Looking at the map, the next islands coming to the Haxe build will be Mythology Island, followed by Shrink Ray Island, as we previously reported.

Before you start your prison-break escapades, make sure to stop by Bert’s Basement Gym and check out its common room store with your a-droid-able friend Quippy. If cuteness is a crime, then Quippy is guilty as charged. You’ll find them accompanied by a pelican on their head and dressed in a classic striped prison uniform.

Three of the four itemsโ€”Prisoner Costume, Pet Bird Follower, and Escapee Dr. Hareโ€”were originally made to promote Escape from Pelican Rock’s release, but the Handcuff Toss is new! Equip it and press the spacebar to throw your handcuffs in the air like you just don’t care.

Are you guys excited to return to the near-impenetrable walls of Pelican Rock? If you need help at any point during your stay, check out our Escape From Pelican Rock guide for tips, tricks, and trivia.

Common rooms aren’t the only stores receiving updates. The three other in-game stores received some updates as well.

This week’s Poptropica store lineup is mostly the same as last week’s, but a few items were swapped. In costumes, Dangerous Waters and Mech Pilot have been replaced with Clown and Fierce Lion*. Also, the creepy Zombify ability was swapped with the lovely Love Potion* in the pranks section.

The Pet Barn also boasts a lineup of new and old accessories for your precious pets. Our returning items this time around are Sorcerer Hat*, Flower Headband, Black Pointed Bangs, Round Glasses, Hero Mask, Grey Beard, Zomberry Eyes, Yellow Dead Eyes, Cute Blue Eyes*, and Big Brown Eyes*. We also have five new items: Reading Glasses, Green Cloak, Fairy Wings, Bat Wings, and Bandana.

Finally, the clubhouse store has a new array of familiar furniture and wallpapers. This time around, the decor store features 21 items, 12 of which are members-only.

Don’t forget that the Poppies 2020 nomination round ends tonight, so make sure to fill out our survey and let us know who/what you feel deserves to win an award. Maybe you want to nominate some of the new pet items for Best Pet Accessory, or your favorite furniture items for Best Clubhouse Decor. Get nominating before time runs out!

Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

Escape from Pelican Rock Island, Pop Places IRL

Pop Places IRL: Escape From Pelican Rock

Pop Places IRL Header

Hey Poptropicans, and welcome back to our new “Pop Places IRL” series! Here, I’ll be walking you through some of Escape From Pelican Rock Island’s most notable scenes and comparing them to those scenes in real life (IRL).

You may already know this if you’re very familiar with California (or have read our trivia on the Escape From Pelican Rock Island Guide), but Pelican Rock is based onย San Francisco (or “Bay City”), and more specifically, its famous Alcatraz island prison.

Even though the prison is no longer up and running IRL today, visitors can still take a tour of the islandย located in San Francisco Bay (if you can withstand the strong smell of pelican feces). When it was still in operation, the facility was well known for being impossible to break out of, though I guess our Poptropicans proved that wrong!

Once you’re arrested, you get to visit many important places inside the prison, including the yard. If you thought it was a pretty dull way to spend your time in game, I’m sorry to tell you that the IRL prisonย recreation yard isn’t any more dazzling.

Aside from your recreation time behind bars, meal time makes up a big portion of our Poptropicans’ adventures. While photos of Pelican Rock’s cafeteria aren’t in black and white, the IRL prison cafeteria may just have better food!

The last main location you often visit while at Pelican Rock (besides the plate making room, which shows a very common jail trope) is, of course, your cell. Poptropicans may have it a bit better space wise, but it’s cool to see that even the green walls match up with the IRL prison cells.

Another big landmark on the island in game was the “Colt Tower” that you chase Booted Bandit up. IRL, this location was based on San Fran’s Coit Tower, a tourist destination aside from Alcatraz!

A spot that I’m obligated to mention is of course San Fran’s famous Golden Gate Bridge! Though not a huge destination in game, the bridge can be seen in the background multiple times along your adventure and is a staple in the city’s skyline.

Well, that wraps up our tour of real-life Escape From Pelican Rock! What did you think?

Have you been to San Francisco? How does it compare to Poptropica’s interpretation? I’ve actually been on an Alcatraz tour and think the resemblance is pretty cool! What other places do you want us to cover in this series?

If you liked this post, be sure to smash that like buttonย check out our real-life tour of Crisis Caverns Islandย too! ๐Ÿ™‚
