Recap: PHB Tribal Tournament 2020 🏹🔥🏅

Rise up, Poptropicans! It’s time to find out which tribe reigns supreme!

The PHB’s 2020 Tribal Tournament has come to an end, and it’s time to recap the results, which were also announced earlier at our closing ceremony. We hope those of you who came had as much fun at the party as we did! It was a great time mingling, cheering, and going head-to-head in different games — this time just for the sheer fun of it. 😉 Did you make it into the photo collage?

Above all, we’d like to thank those who participated with dynamism and unquestionable team spirit the whole way through. It sure was an exciting event and we couldn’t have pulled it off without you. Now, onto the results!

🔥 Creative Competitors 🎨

For our first round, which transpired throughout the entire event, it was all about art and creativity. Many Poptropicans sent in their written works, visual pieces, musical compositions, and more Poptropica-based fan creations!

We looked for effort, so players earned 10 points for their tribe for every creation they submitted. Here are the results:

  1. Black Flags – 570
  2. Wildfire – 240
  3. Nanobots – 190
  4. Flying Squid – 180
  5. Nightcrawlers – 120
  6. Seraphim – 40
  7. Pathfinders/Yellowjackets – 30

Scroll down near the end to view the impressive Art Gallery of the Games, a selection of our favorite creations submitted for this event. So much good stuff!

🧠 Genius Games 💪

In Genius Games, there were three outlets to obtaining points which included: the Caption Contest, Tricky Trivia, and Trace That Place.

The Caption Contest was exactly what it sounds like. We provided a photo of a funky Poptropica scene and it was your task to come up with a caption that best captured the essence of the picture. There were entries that were witty, outright laughable, and some even brutal in their honesty. Here are the stats along with a collection of some of our favorites:

  1. Wildfire – 170
  2. Black Flags – 130
  3. Nanobots – 110
  4. Flying Squid – 90
  5. Pathfinders – 30
  6. Nightcrawlers/Seraphim/Yellowjackets – 0
  • “Everyone once quarantine ends” – Tall Melon (Nanobots)
  • “Oh, this? Just a normal day in Poptropica.” – Incredible Fire (Wildfire)

For Tricky Trivia, team members worked together to answer 20 trivia questions (each worth 10 points) regarding Poptropica — both in and out of the game. Most were fairly simple, but a few were pretty challenging as well. Regardless, many tribes were able to get most, and even all, of them correct! (list in alphabetical order; not by score)

  • Black Flags – 200/200
  • Flying Squid – 190/200
  • Nanobots – 200/200
  • Nightcrawlers – 110/200
  • Pathfinders – 190/200
  • Seraphim – 50/200
  • Wildfire – 190/200
  • Yellowjackets – 0/200

Trace That Place was a scavenger-hunt-esque game where participants had to put their scenery observation skills to the test. There were 16 screenshots from various different islands, and it was up to the players to collaboratively figure out where they come from. Here are the results:

  • Black Flags – 160/160
  • Flying Squid – 160/160
  • Nanobots – 160/160
  • Nightcrawlers – 150/160
  • Pathfinders – 160/160
  • Seraphim – 0/160
  • Wildfire – 160/160
  • Yellowjackets – 0/160

To view the trivia questions we asked, visit the Genius Games post. And for their answers, visit the Gamers’ Gauntlet post. How many did you get right?

🏃‍♂️ Gamers’ Gauntlet 🏋️‍♂️

The final round captured the true essence of what makes Poptropica so great — completing Islands! In this case, the medallions from Poptropolis Games, Reality TV, and Reality TV: Wild Safari were the ones to go after. For each completion of an island, the tribe would earn 10 points. Here’s the list:

  1. Black Flags – 1360
  2. Nanobots – 340
  3. Seraphim – 130
  4. Flying Squid – 120
  5. Pathfinders – 30
  6. Nightcrawlers – 20
  7. Wildfire – 20
  8. Yellowjackets – 0

What a finish! As most of us know by now, Flash’s imminent fading by the end of 2020 means many of the islands will not be playable for much longer (unless the Creators bring them to newer tech). So competition or not, make the most of the moment and play the heck out of your favorite islands while you can!

🏁 Final Rankings 🏆

Ouch! Coming in at last place with a mere 30 points are the Yellowjackets. That must sting quite a bit. Looks like you’re gonna have to bee better next time, guys.

They may not have gotten the win, but at least they’re not last — it’s the Seraphim! 130 points are all for this tribe but don’t be discouraged, seraphs. Just keep on soaring!

6th place isn’t anything to write home about, but the Nightcrawlers‘ effort in and of itself is still worth celebrating. What you gonna do with those 400 points? Wiggle wiggle wiggle…

The Pathfinders couldn’t seek their way to the top this time, but it was one heck of a journey! At the top of the bottom, the navigators stand confident at 5th place with 480 points.

Here comes a green wave, and we’re not squidding, because snorkeling in at 4th place is the Flying Squid. Not half bad, guys!

Things are heating up as we boil down to the top three. The Wildfire finished off hot racking up a total of 780 points! Way to bring some fire to the competition!

*beep* *boop* And I oop! Don’t let these little crabs deceive you. Nanobots defeated all odds by coming in 2nd place and pulling in a solid 1000 points. That’s no easy feat, so kudos to you guys!

Arrr you mateys ready to find out who took home the treasure this year? You guessed it — it’s the rowdy and ruthless Black Flags!

Winning by an absolute landslide — with over double the amount of points of their successors — these scallywags have more than deserved their reign as champions until the next games. Ahoy!

  1. Black Flags – 2420 (570 + 490 + 1360) 🥇
  2. Nanobots – 1000 (190 + 470 + 340) 🥈
  3. Wildfire – 780 (240 + 520 + 20) 🥉
  4. Flying Squid – 740 (180 + 440 + 120)
  5. Pathfinders – 480 (30 + 420 + 30)
  6. Nightcrawlers – 400 (120 + 260 + 20)
  7. Seraphim – 130 (40 + 50 + 40)
  8. Yellowjackets – 30 (30 + 0 + 0)

3️⃣ Round III: Most Valuable Player 🏅

And for the last result of the tournament, we’d like to award Pegs (Muddy Kid) with the third week’s MVP prize! Thank you for your never-ending dedication, and congratulations on your membership! You’ve done the Nanobots proud, so enjoy every second of it and feel free to take your bow.

Paradise Island

“Party” on an alternate Paradise Island 🏄‍♂️ & why this new feature doesn’t land with many players

Hey Poptropicans, it’s another new day of events here on Animal Crossing Paradise Island! (In case you missed it, catch up on the first two days of Poptropica’s latest endeavour in yesterday’s post to make sense of this one.)

Day three’s festivities: a party on a new character’s paradisiacal island. It’s like your Paradise Island, but with more stuff. Remember that message you got from the blonde girl who can’t wait to visit you on your island? She shows up, and before you can even respond, you’re whisked away to her island party. At this point, no names of characters have been introduced—not yours, not hers, nor anyone else you meet. How strange?

Anyway, the girl says you’re just in time for the surfing contest, but there’s not much contest about it: you surf alone on the waves of a familiar game from the recent ad American Girl: Joss’s Island. And not only do you still not know who all the other randos on the party host’s island are—well, except for DJ Saturday Nite from Zomberry Island—you can’t even talk to them!

Moving on, here’s your chance at 1000 credits. After the waves, the host will introduce you to the next activity, a starfish scavenger hunt. There are five to find, and it’s not a big island, so it won’t take long. However, there’s one that’s a little trickier to grab—the one on the sand near the surf shop. To get that one, jump into the water from one of the island’s edges and swim over to pick it up!

That’s it for day three, but let’s check out what else is on this alternate Paradise Island. Some of these fancy things—like the glowing dance floor and the pen of horses—definitely aren’t in the Ko-Kea catalog. Nor are the renovations to the beach house exterior! But perhaps we’ll get these features in the future?

At any rate, it looks like the ability to visit other players’ customized islands might be on the horizon. Now that would be a party!

Looking ahead in a message received, day four looks like it’ll bring a beach party. Wait, wasn’t this already a beach party? Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens next. (To join the fun, see our initial post on Paradise Island.)

👉 Why “Paradise Island” doesn’t land with many Poptropica players

Since sharing about Paradise Island here on the PHB, Poptropicans everywhere have been popping in with their takes on this latest development. Here are a few thoughts from players on the PHC, our Discord server (and my own addendums):

“Poptropica is supposed to be a game of storytelling, and what the creators have been making these days just doesn’t cut it. We older players know early Pop well, and know that it was nothing like this. I say this with heart, but Poptropica is simply not Poptropica anymore, what with all these new updates that only take away from the game we know and love. The creators have been focusing more and more on worthless updates instead of continuing the educational yet fun format they had before, and right now, what I want more than anything is to see Old Poptropica, in all its glory, show up on my computer screen.”

Purple Paw

Absolutely. Just as has been written about elsewhere on the PHB, Poptropica was created as a unique digital platform for modern storytelling for the next generation. It was never meant to become Mocktropica Island.

“Mmmmkay… so it’s our third (fourth?) redo of Home Island, and once again they’re chasing current trends… that’s it. I don’t want to come off as overly negative, but the only thing that can save Pop at this point is an entire new team of Creators, or a fan remake/spin-off. It’s like they’re intentionally doing everything except what people actually want, in an attempt to cater to a nonexistent audience!”

MaryannTheConqueror

A few things come to mind about Poptropica’s chasing of trends: there’s Realms, a sandbox creation that mimics Minecraft; the recent-ish emphasis on new clothes, pets, and home decor that feels like Club Penguin; and now, the personal islands with daily tasks that copies Animal Crossing.

Animal Crossing | image: Nintendo

Instead of making inferior versions of things that already exist, Poptropica might do well to go back to the unique product they used to be so good at creating: immersive island worlds filled with meaningful storytelling.

“The whole reason Poptropica is my favorite game is because of the storytelling. It’s the only thing I’m good at, and the reason I much prefer it to other amazing games that are mostly gameplay, like Super Mario Bros. So it’s been really disappointing nowadays. I haven’t played the new makeover yet, but from what I’ve heard it sounds pretty nice. Except for the daily tasks. Those games are always so boring. They lull you with a false sense of progress, and completely destroy all enjoyability in very little time. Like Sims. I’d like to have something simple and quiet, that I can come to on my own time for a wholesome storytelling experience, like long ago.”

Incredible Fire

The daily, mandated, straightforward tasks are a bit reminiscent of Poptropica: Forgotten Islands, an old iOS and Nintendo 3DS game that probably lives up to its name by being so uninspiring as to have been generally forgotten by the fandom. It was basically a sequence of nonsensical fetch quests, and you can read all about it in our Forgotten Islands Guide. Let’s hope Paradise Island doesn’t become like it.

Paradise Island, Pets

Now boarding: to Paradise Island ✈️🌴

Hey Poptropicans—big things ahead! Group 1 is now boarding the first flight to the shortly anticipated Paradise Island. Poptropica has begun rolling out a new kind of Home Island experience, and thanks to idk the glitcher via the Poptropica Club, here’s how you can get your ticket for the journey:

  1. Head over to idk’s Format Loader and select “HTML5 MVP (Haxe JS)” from the dropdown menu. For best results, don’t enter a username or password, which will give you a new, unsaved account. (You can log in with your account, but it’ll skip some of the new features.) Click Submit, and you’re off!
  2. Another method you can try is clearing Poptropica.com cookies in your web browser and then clicking “Play Now” on Poptropica’s homepage, though that won’t always work.

Oh, and good news: The game screen is now suitably bigger! Honestly, they should have kept it that way a long time ago.

You’ll be welcomed by a Poptropica Airways flight attendant who enthuses about your destination, which will be “your own island.” She’ll ask you to confirm your photo, which will bring up the familiar orange customization screen. Once you’re ready to go, you’ll walk to the “Now Boarding” lane, and a plane loading screen is all that divides you from your destination: Paradise Island!

And then you land on a tropical shore—there doesn’t seem to be a runway for the plane—and are greeted by an enthusiastic girl who insists on giving you a tour. She introduces the promenade and admits they’ve been behind on construction, but now that you’re here, you’ll be in charge! A half-built construction is visible not too far off… Anyway, she also takes you to the taco truck (which we saw in an earlier sneak peek) and your beach house.

But before you can enter, you’ll need to save your account. That screen looks different too: now, as you settle on a username and password, you get a “Citizen of the Poptropica Archipelago” passport with your photo!

Once you enter your house (which here is sometimes referred to as your Beach Hut, despite its grandiose nature), you’ll be greeted by two more girls eager to show you around. That’s when you get your first task: to buy three furniture items from the store Ko-Kea (a strange rebranding of Ikea?).

You access Ko-Kea through the menu, which is now a smartphone instead of the usual backpack. It’s basically like the clubhouse store we know from Home Island. When you’ve bought your three items, you get what becomes the first of many “Task Complete” screens. And can I just say… Is this not literally Mocktropica?

But wait, there’s more! You’ll then get a second task, which is to pick flowers from the promenade with which to decorate your new home. Step outside and you’ll find five very obviously placed spots to pick your flowers, complete with a counter at the top of the screen. Bring them back to your house, and the two girls, satisfied, will leave you to do your own building for your “dream island.” (One good thing from the tasks, though: they come with rewards of credits.)

There is one last bit with the first girl who met you, though. She’ll show you your mailbox in front of your home, where you’ll be getting messages… on your smartphone. Logic aside, your first message comes from an unnamed friend, a girl with blonde hair, who’s excited to come visit (misspelled) you soon.

A couple other messages remind you to get your daily login bonus of credits (so that’s still a thing) and to come back tomorrow to adopt a pet. That’s it from the girls’ tour, but there’s more to explore!

Yes, despite the absence of a pet barn on your island, you can still get pets. Come back the next day, and you’ll find a new Adopt-a-Pet stand.

All the ones we’ve known are there, but there’s a new pet for members: an adorable Corgi. Without the pet barn, we don’t (yet?) have a way to customize pet colors, but you can still buy pet accessories. In fact, it’s another mandated task.

Day two’s final task is to begin decorating the island for an upcoming beach party. Grab some stuff from Ko-Kea, click “Decorate” from the menu, and add items to your island just like with clubhouse decorating. Ta-da!

Looks like we’ll have to keep waiting for a new day to unfold more happenings. Wonder how many days the Creators have planned out? In the meantime, the Map has been added to your smartphone, so you can go exploring the few islands currently out on Haxe (including Home Island, which may soon be replaced)!

Everything else on the smartphone is pretty self explanatory, and we already went through most of them earlier. Here’s a quick note on the rest: Closet brings up your collection of items (mostly store costumes), and along with Account and Settings, the screens are all familiar. Remember to use the curved arrow button to go “back” on your virtual phone anytime you need it.

Let’s explore what else is on Paradise Island! On the promenade, you’ll find, of course, your house, taco truck, and the surf shop (which is what we’ve previously known as just “the store,” where you can buy costumes and more for your character). If you head to the right, you’ll also find a trampoline, a rock wall and water slide combo, and… that’s about it. For now, at least!

Oh, and as you go around different scenes, you’ll come across a few new loading screens. Thankfully, they’re much less in-the-face about membership benefits like the ones we’ve been seeing recently (which don’t appear in this “paradise” version of Haxe). In fact, these monochromatic patterned pieces featuring sea animals, summer snacks, and other random items are all pretty cute!

That brings us to the end of our visit to Paradise Island—for now. Does it impress you? Or does it leave something to be desired? Here’s my humble opinion, from someone who’s been playing the game since near the very beginning.

It’s certainly a big update with new features that offer incentives to log in more often to see what’s new. Some of the ideas brought to life are pretty neat, like being able to decorate the exterior of an entire island.

But something doesn’t feel quite right. Why this, and why now? At a time when all Poptropicans really want is a new island to play, why did Poptropica create what is basically an overhaul of Home Island and its functions? It seems the word “island” doesn’t mean to the Creators what it means to the players.

Home Island

In the Poptropica universe, an island, at least in the past, has implied a story within which the player is immersed. (And a story, of course, implies a beginning, middle, and end.) Cobbling together a to-do list (ahem, Paradise Island) or a few mini-games (Reality TV: Wild Safari) on a new “island” area on the map, with little else to do, just doesn’t feel like a real island.

Now, perhaps we can give a free pass to the open-ended Home Island as a landing pad for players to kick back in between island adventures, and even to Paradise Island as it’s basically Home Island rebranded.

Snagglemast Island

But for the Poptropica Creators to invest so much into re-creating, over and over, the perfect new player experience (Monkey Wrench, Home, Snagglemast) — that takes away from the time and energy they could have been spending to create an actual island as defined above. After all, the majority of players have been waiting literal years for a proper story-driven island.

In other words, Paradise Island feels okay at best, but it’s not what anyone’s been asking for. (Creators, if you want to hear our ideas, read our Pop Petitions!)

Game Show Island, Pop Places IRL

Pop Places IRL: Game Show 🤖

Pop Places IRL Header

Welcome back to “Pop Places IRL,” Poptropicans! SD here to take you on a trip to Game Show Island, which coincidentally takes place all over the world! Liking this series? Be sure to check out other Pop Places IRL posts.

Even though Game Show Island primarily consists of, well, game shows, each competition does take place in a distinct, very real city. So, despite the constant immersion in mini games, pay closer attention and you’ll notice some world destinations!

Let’s start off with Tokyo, home to the big baddie of the adventure: Mr. Yoshi’s Game Show. The city, located in Japan, is actually one we’ve visited before in this series! Remember Red Dragon Island? Familiarity aside, however, Game Show Island takes place in a much more modern version of the city. We can clearly see the inspiration for this location as far back as the concept art! The city is clearly known for its bright advertisements, technology, animation, and much more!

Moving on, why don’t we head to Miami next? Located in Florida (USA), this city is home to the Spin for Riches Game Show. While the state does have a lot of retirement homes, I think the area is more well known for its bustling beaches! I think the coastal colors translate well in-game.

What’s next, you may ask? None other than Istanbul (not Constantinople)! In Poptropica, this is where we get to play the Scaredy Pants Game Show, but fear not! IRL, we’re just taking a trip to Turkey. Look at that remarkable architecture!

Next up on our list, Moscow! Here we will find the Brainiacs Game Show, in the capital of Russia! Isn’t it kinda cool that you can even see the resemblance of the city in the simplest of concept art? It’s pretty interesting to see the unique architecture of each city translated into Poptropica, that’s for sure.

Turning back round to our last big city, we have Buenos Aires! This one is the capital of Argentina, but in Poptropica it’s known for the Kerplunk Game Show! Perhaps not as flashy as some of the other tourism hot-spots on our list, but noteworthy nonetheless.

Wow, who knew you traveled so much on Game Show Island? It’s like trying to fit the whole globe into one island! And that’s not even considering Main Street, Club Nouveau Riche, the Factory, Holmes’ Lair, and—oh! The Museum!

Before I adjourn our travels for the day, I will leave you with one more fun comparison from the Museum we see on Main Street. Remember that robot statue? Fun fact: it’s based on “The Thinker,” a sculpture by Auguste Rodin.

And with that, I think our trip is just about coming to an end. What did you think of the journey? Do you think Poptropica captured the real nature of these cities? What other islands do you want to see in this series? Be sure to leave a comment with your thoughts below!

So long, Poptropicans! Keep on traveling!

Join us for a month of Poptropica videos! 📽

The following event is not run by the PHB. Hear it from Isaac, one half of the YouTube channel Dimension Bros, which makes videos about Poptropica and other fandoms.

Hey everyone! I’m Isaac, and along with my best friend Theo, we’re Dimension Bros on YouTube. For the past few weeks, Theo and I have been thinking of what we should do to celebrate Poptropica’s 13th birthday coming up this September. And so Poptropica Month was born! Watch and read more below:

The idea for a Poptropica Month collab came after we started bouncing ideas back and forth about what videos we would make to celebrate Pop’s birthday and decided that our usual 8 videos a month schedule simply would not be enough of a celebration for such a great game. We wanted to make more than 8 videos, but with school coming up for us, that seemed out of the realm of possibility. Enter… the rest of the Poptropica fandom!

We invite all video creators/enthusiasts/YouTubers to join us during the month of September in uploading Poptropica videos. Whether you’re new to sharing on YouTube or you’ve already got a channel with other content, you’re welcome to join this collab! If you’ve been considering starting up a YouTube channel, maybe make a Poptropica Month video as your first video to get off to a good start—after all, there’s a community already here to support you.

Isaac (left) and Theo (right), the Dimension Bros on YouTube.

How can you get started? After watching the video above, take the next step by clicking the link in the video description, which will guide you through joining the Poptropica Month Discord server, sharing the link to your channel with us, and sharing your Pop Month video(s) with us on the Discord server. We’ll include all the Pop Month videos in this master playlist for all to enjoy.

Any kind of video goes, as long as it relates to Poptropica. This could be a simple let’s-play or walkthrough, a top ten list (or a Pop 5, per PHB tradition), a theory about your favorite island, a Poptropica-based song or speedpaint… anything you can imagine! Like to cook? Bake a Poptropica cake! Comedy skits? Maybe you could do a sketch about the Poptropica Creators and their never-ending secrecy of when we’ll be getting the old islands back. Make as few or as many videos as you like—you don’t have to stress about uploading non-stop Pop content like we’ll be doing on Dimension Bros.

Also, you don’t need super fancy equipment to make a decent video! Most Dimension Bros videos are filmed on our phones and edited with iMovie. (There’s free editing software for Windows, too.) It’s more about the creativity than the tools, so don’t be afraid to try with what you’ve got! Just take a look at my setup for videos—yes, my laptop is on a cardboard box.

Behind the scenes of a Dimension Bros video.

Even if you don’t participate in uploading any videos, Poptropica Month is for everyone to enjoy. So when September arrives in just over a week, be sure to go support all the videos posted to the master playlist.

Looking forward to seeing what types of videos you guys will upload for Poptropica Month! Also, NANOBOTS FOR THE WIN!! WHOOOOO!!!

Hope you enjoyed this guest post by Isaac from Dimension Bros. If you did, be sure to check out our feature post for Dimension Bros as well as our other Poptropica YouTuber spotlights for more video ideas!
