community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the March recap for Community Creations! March’s theme was Ancient Egypt (and the featured work is not in any particular order). Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue whatโ€™s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Grave Robbing by Midnightoilstudios

Kicking things off with Copy Cat, Moreau, Director D., Black Widow, Octavian, and the Booted Bandit! An unlikely group perhaps, but maybe just the team needed for this dangerous sort of job… or perhaps just the team to spell future betrayal. The setting in unmistakably Egyptian, perfect for our theme, and the lighting is wonderfully dramatic. I really appreciate the attention not only put towards the characters, but the environment as well. I feel like everyone could fall into a trap at any moment! I’d love to see where this story goes. The Lost Pyramid of Wawa-‘aww (Woo-oo!) : Duck Tails 2017 Tribute by Barefoot Knuckle

Ooooh! Or, should I say, woo-oo! Any DuckTales fans in the comment section? If you aren’t familiar with the show, its series finale recently aired, so this submission is the perfect tribute. Though Poptropicans may look a little bug-eyed at first from the perspective of the McDucks, I think both groups of adventurers would get along just fine. And just think of the adventures that would be had! This cartoon is no stranger to visiting Ancient Egypt, and I think that Annie Perkins from the Cryptid Island novel is a perfect match. Next to Annie is “Samir Badawi,” the main character of Barefoot Knuckle’s own Arabian Nights fan-novel. You can really tell how much thought and love was put into this idea! Excellent work. Pop Creators in Egypt by Smart Icicle

One thing I like about this submission is its representation of different Ancient Egyptian occupations. And it turns out that they correspond pretty well with three of our favorite Poptropica villains! Dr. Hare being a carrot farmer makes perfect sense, along with Captain Crawfish as a solider and Black Widow as our artistic scribe. Hmmm… I wonder what Binary Bard’s role would be? Anyway, this is a pretty neat submission! Find the artist on DeviantArt.

Egyptian Villains by AdventurersNHunters

In this submission, we have a classic display of Poptropica’s four biggest villains. But with an Egyptian twist, of course! I love that this design isn’t just about dressing these Poptropicans up in Egyptian clothes, but instead has a little more story to it. AdventurersNHunters says that “Dr. Hare, Binary Bard, Black Widow, and Captain Crawfish impersonate Egyptian royalty and grab the diamonds!” That simple description makes it all make sense, just like that. Quite the clever composition! Find the artist on DeviantArt.

Egypt by Dangerous Dragon

Alright, I think we all knew that we couldn’t get through our Ancient Egypt theme without showcasing the Pyramids, right? Out of mummies, tombs, pharaohs, and hieroglyphs, pyramids is definitely the next association on the list. Though this composition is fairly simple, it matches our theme well and utilizes a great color scheme. The yellow orange of the sandstone and the blazing red of the sun give off lots of visual heat, and it’s interesting to see those colors continue in the Poptropican in the foreground. I also like how the rough texture of the pyramid is balanced by the soft texture of the sky/background. Neat work! Find the artist in the comments section.

Honorable Mentions

Aaaaand, as a mummy would now say, that’s a wrap! You guys had fantastic submissions as always, so I’m excited to see what you’ll to next!

April: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that monthโ€™s theme. So what is April’s theme? April’s theme isโ€ฆ

Bugs!

Last month, we celebrated the upcoming Secret of the Jade Scarab Island with our Ancient Egypt theme. Why not continue the trend? Let’s take the “scarab” part of the Dream Island contest winner a bit literally, with the theme of bugs! Though creepy crawlies can be a bit, well, creepy, they don’t necessarily have to be! However you decide to incorporate them is up to you.

Obviously Poptropica’s Nightcrawlers Tribe has already taken our theme to heart, but they’re not the only ones getting the spotlight. Aside from the aforementioned Jade Scarab, there are actually plenty of bugs in Poptropica! Er, well, there are also plenty of bugs in Mocktropica too, now that I think about it! Dr. Hare’s nightmare about ants comes to mind, for one. And yes, we are counting things like spiders because we’re dealing with bugs, not necessarily insects! That makes Black Widow fair game. If only we got to encounter Moth Man on Cryptids Island, huh? Anyway, I’ll stop bugging you so you can get to creating!

  • Comment below with a link to whatever youโ€™ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as youโ€™d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, Iโ€™m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so donโ€™t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

April Fools! A date of sim-ple fun ๐Ÿ’–

So Poptropicans, how did your dates go with the venerated villains? Now that the night’s over, we’re coming clean to say… April Fools!

The Poptropica Dating Sim Fan Blog is getting a goodnight kiss, and the PHB’s back, baby. Did you miss us? ๐Ÿ˜˜

The PHB became the Poptropica Dating Sim Fan Blog on April Fools’ Day.

Some of you caught on to our shenanigans yesterday, but others of you just could not believe it! ๐Ÿคฃ Check out some of our favorite reactions from the community on the PHB post and on our PHC Discord server:

Now that the jig is up, we figure we’ll share a bit about how this all came to be! Of course, the PHB loves pulling its share of April Fools’ pranks, and this year was no exception.

Inspired by the fan-made Poptropica Dating Sim created several months ago by Jia/Magniventris, the PHB’s MaryannTheConqueror dreamed up the idea of turning the PHB into one giant ad for this beloved spin-off game, keeping it a surprise from Jia. She also created the header image, which features the dating sim characters in anime style!

Adding to all the fun, Lucky Joker then created a โ€œWhich villain would you date?โ€ quiz to help match players with a villain to date in the simulation. By the way, you can still take the quiz!

While the Poptropica Dating Sim Fan Blog was just a fantasy, the Poptropica Dating Sim itself is most certainly real and still getting updates! This unofficial Poptropica visual novel takes you on daring dates with iconic Poptropicans Binary Bard, Octavian, and Ringmaster Raven, and we are in love. ๐Ÿ˜ Play it now on CloudNovel!

It’s all part of an experiment led by good old Dr. Morrigan to make the imprisoned bad boys, well, not so bad. And there’s going to be voice acting! ๐Ÿ’‹

We truly have to thank Jia/Magniventris, the genius behind the whole sim, for creating this ongoing masterpiece. You can play part of the Pop Dating Sim now on CloudNovel, and join us in awaiting its future installments! We know โ€” the Poptropica Dating Sim Fan Blog is a blog you didn’t ask for, but it’s the blog we all need. Just look at how you can cheer up those sad souls! ๐Ÿ˜

Poptropica Worlds House Tour: White Fox ๐Ÿก

Hey Poptropicans, this is aย guest postย by White Fox.ย Enjoy!

Hello, fellow Poptropicans! Recently, I shared myย clubhouse tour here on the PHB, and now I want to share myย house in Poptropica Worlds!ย

I gotta warn you, this house is a lot bigger than my clubhouse in the regular Poptropica. Anyway, come inside! To your right is a closet, left is a big-screen TV, and right above are two crossed axes.

I look very different in Poptropica Worlds, don’t I?

Head upstairs, and you will be standing in between two doors. One is locked, and the other leads to the bedroom. Climb the rope…

…And to the left of the rope is a couch right under the one and only… Governor Ridley! This dude was one of my favorite characters from Skullduggery Island back in the days of Flash-based Poptropica, so I put a picture of him in my house over a velvet couch. To the right is another couch, and a table with all my island trophies on it. Confession time: I’ve only ever won Greek Sea Odyssey in Poptropica Worlds.ย ๐Ÿ˜‚

Even farther over is… DR HARE’S FACTORY! RUN!!!!! Or, you could, you know, go in. On the right, you’ll see that over the door is one of those creepy LED lights Dr Hare has, and over here is where I get to chop up carrots. Hooray!

Above is… The Chair of the Hare! …with a window showing outer space. Don’t worry, that window is fake. I’m notย actuallyย in outer space. Or am I?

Head to the left of the rope, all the way across that floor from the Hare Chair, and you see a tiny planter where all the carrots grow. Down the rope, and you are in front of all the carrot shipments, courtesy of Dr Hare’s Revenge from Poptropica Worlds.

Oh, right! Can’t forget my bedroom! On the right you will see my favorite couch. Are you getting tired of couches? Oh, well. I’m not! Anyway, head up the rope to the actual bedroom part of my bedroom. Keep an eye out for my painting of Pelican Rock!

In my bedroom is a canopy bed, a nightstand with a hotel-style lamp, and a statue of Athena. I figured I owed her something after she helped me on both Mythology and Greek Sea Odysseyย Islands. Right below is a simple window showing a wonderful view of the beach outside. I also have a potted plant and a chandelier there.

Whew! I think that’s enough for our tour!ย Remember: Never make a deal with Dr Hare for a ton of carrots in exchange for a factory in your house. He’s pretty bad about holding up his end of the deal. Thanks for reading!

Peace,ย
White Fox

Pop Petition: Let’s talk about minority representation in Poptropica

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by HfEvra (Mess of a Being)Enjoy!

Greetings, fellow humanoid creatures with unrealistic proportions who lack ears and noses! This is HfEvra or Mess of a Being, and Iโ€™m here today with another guest post, this time about minority representation in Poptropica โ€” particularly on ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.

As a Middle Eastern non-binary lesbian, seeing minority representation in current childrenโ€™s media brings me immense joy and makes me hopeful that the kids of today will grow up to be tolerant, well-adjusted adults. But recently, I found myself thinking: What if Poptropica also had this sort of representation? And thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m here to talk about today.

Representation in Poptropica so far

Before talking about how more diversity can be implemented into the game, I wanna go over some instances of Poptropicaโ€™s existing attempts at diversity and inclusivity โ€” both the successes and the failures.

The first thing that comes to my mind is the removal of the gender selector from the account creation screen, clearly meant to make the game inclusive for LGBT people who donโ€™t fall into the gender binary of male or female.

Poptropica used to ask if you were a boy or girl when creating a new account.

Instead of a playerโ€™s choice of gender affecting whether or not their Poptropican has eyelashes, the player simply gets to choose whether or not they want eyelashes without having to go into the nitty-gritty of gender identity. In addition, it was also made so that both masculine and feminine clothing could be seen at the same time in the (now removed) New You building on Home Island.

In terms of representing persons of color (POC), however, Poptropica is a mixed bag. On one hand, we have C.J., the brilliant young girl scientist from Shrink Ray Island as well as Dr. Rachel Salerno, the courageous astronaut woman from Lunar Colony Island. On the other hand, we have Ringmaster Raven, the horribly mistreated and tragic villain from Monster Carnival Island. (Yes, it does seem that I am incapable of making anything that doesnโ€™t end up referencing him.)

Top: Dr. Salerno, one of the best depictions of a person of color in Poptropica. Below: Ringmaster Raven, one of the gameโ€™s worst representations of POC.

There is also the fact that Poptropica is guilty of whitewashing โ€” the act of taking a character who isnโ€™t white (or white-coded) and altering them to be white, or at the least, white-passing. Crusher from Super Power Island and DJ Saturday Nite from Zomberry Island, who were both dark-skinned when they were first introduced, had their skin tones lightened in subsequent appearances in the game years later โ€” quite a problematic move considering that people of color are already lacking representation as is. Here’s the before-and-after of the DJ:

And as for Crusher…

That being said, there are ways that Poptropica could add diversity to the game and make things more inclusive without falling into problematic implications. Letโ€™s discuss a few of those ways, shall we?

What else can be done?

In the PHBโ€™s Q&A with Poptropicaโ€™s CEO from last November, it was mentioned that Poptropica doesnโ€™t currently have any characters whose sexual orientation or gender identity plays an important part in the story, but that it is something that should be considered for future islands. However, there is actually more that can be done in regards to representation than having islands revolve around the minority identities in question.

(Some players read Hazel and Beatrice from Crisis Caverns as a couple. Had it been confirmed in the island itself, this couldโ€™ve been an interesting representation of not only gay and/or biracial couples, but also older LGBT couples, who donโ€™t get as much representation as younger ones.)

One of the more subtle ways to establish a character as LGBT is to integrate it into their appearance or environment. Maybe a character could have a pride flag color scheme, or wear something like a pin that has the pride colors on it! Maybe we enter a characterโ€™s house as part of the story and we find a pride flag tapestry on the wall! Maybe the character has framed pictures of them alongside their same-sex parents! Thereโ€™s practically an infinite amount of ways to add LGBT content to Poptropica without being in-your-face about it.

Of course, that isnโ€™t to say that all LGBT content has to be shunted out of the frame by being restricted to subtle design choices and/or background characters. One aspect of representation to remember is that a characterโ€™s minority trait shouldnโ€™t be their entire personality, but if the LGBT characters in the game are restricted exclusively to background characters, thatโ€™s not fully representative either.

Luckily, Poptropica islands have more moving parts than just โ€œplayerโ€ and โ€œbackground NPCsโ€ โ€” they also have a ton of secondary characters who play a part in the islandsโ€™ stories! In the future, there could be an island where a sidekick character is explicitly shown to be gay, trans, etc. Perhaps they have a romantic partner of the same gender whoโ€™s mentioned or seen alongside them during the story, or perhaps theyโ€™re a non-binary person who uses gender neutral pronouns! Itโ€™s not a hard thing to add to the story โ€” simply referring to the character in question with non-binary pronouns like โ€œthey/themโ€ or โ€œxe/xemโ€ (hey look, those are my pronouns as well!) would help normalize non-conventional pronouns to the gameโ€™s audience of kids.

Since the Poptropica Creators advertised 2021 as โ€œthe year of stories,โ€ perhaps their current priorities are the Dream Island contest winners, so we likely wonโ€™t be seeing this sort of representation anytime soon. But hey, a gay can hope!
