Poptropica Portfolio

Poptropica Portfolio: Jonathan Pitcher

Hello, Poptropicansโ€”it’s time to feature another Poptropica Portfolio!

This time around, we’ll be looking into the works of Jonathan Pitcher,ย who’s been working for StoryArc Media as an art director for over eight years.ย The work I’ll be highlighting here is a collection of his artwork for Poptropica from hisย Behance page, which also includes his non-Poptropica work.

Here are a couple of costume designs for the advertisement games on Poptropica which includes the Tigress costume from Kung Fu Panda and a few of the Zootopia characters, which are brilliant in my opinion. (Click on the images to enlarge them.)

Also, here is the elaborate apparatus of Steamworks Islandย which includes the multi-tool (two different versions shown here at the bottom left side), Sully’s key, the robot crab, and more! Check it out:

Lastly, here are someย characters Pitcher has illustrated for Worlds that are recognizable from all of the islands released so far. Also, there’s this cool character low poly for Mya, and a red ugly/cute Dragon Follower from Pop Original. Awesome stuff!

Those of you who’ve played Survival Island: Episode 4 might also appreciate this item now that you know who probably inspired it…

Poptropica Portfolio: Kyle Fox

A new Poptropica Portfolio is here – and in this case the featured artist is Kyle Fox, a designer who has been working with web and mobile products for kids for over 10 years now. He’s posted lots of his work withย Poptropica and Poptropica Worlds on his Behance portfolio, and it’s pretty impressive!

First up, we have a Zomberry Pitch Bible, a compendium of Zomberry information used to pitch the idea of Zomberries as “The Walking Dead for kids.” Essentially it’s a series of infographics covering everything Zomberry Island, like the details of the Zomberry outbreak, setting, Zomberries themselves, and more.ย (Click on the pics to enlarge them!)

He’s also made some spectacular art for past advertisements on Poptropica. Check out the ad designs for Moana, Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, and Coco!

Then we come to some character designs, which include Poptropica Worlds Mythology Island NPCs, plus store costumes of modern styles, Wild West fashion, and the app-exclusive Fall Fashion and Winter bundles. Also,ย jungle animalsย for some ads.

Kyle has also built up a small but impressive collection of printable posters for various islands, including Virus Hunter postcards with body-themed puns, Zomberryย prints resembling movie posters, and a Monster Carnival poster reminiscent of a circus flyer.

Quite a few infographicsย on Poptropica for the years 2012 and 2016 are also among his works. These cover descriptions and statistics about various islands, the Friends feature, and Poptropica as a whole.

Additionally, Kyle has engineered sound effects for Worlds andย composed music for Poptropica. The most noteworthy in his collection is aย demo of a proposed theme song for Poptropica, which has never been used (but totally should be!).ย The playful tune incorporates a tropical theme, with flutes, various percussion instruments, and ends with a group of kids singing in chorus: “Poptropica.”

There’s lots more Poptropica work for viewing on Kyle’s Behance site. If you enjoyed these highlights, check out the rest of his portfolio here!

Hopefully you enjoyed this Poptropica Portfolio! If you did, you might also like the many other Poptropica Creators’ portfolios we’ve featured here. Check them out, too!

Until next time,

Poptropica Portfolio: Mitch Krpata

Hey Poptropicans, let’s dive into another Poptropica Portfolio.

Like the last portfolio we showcased, this one features copywriting work, this timeย from former senior story developer and narrative designerย Mitch Krpata, also known as the voice of Captain Crawfishโ€”writer of Poptropica books, blogs, islands, and more.

Soon after he wasย let go by Poptropica, Mitch decided to compile a portfolio of his written work with the game he’s worked with for the past decade. Though the artwork is not his, the visuals help bring his words to lifeโ€”as you can see below.

You can view the complete portfolio in this Google presentation. The slideshow covers his graphic novels, dialogue, UX/UI elements, titles and brand names, marketing, and walkthrough videosโ€”all for Poptropica, but likely to expand over time as he pursues other projects.

In a blog post, Mitch says this of his work with Poptropica:

Bit odd to look back and see how much of my life’s work has been tied up in this one property. It’s a source of pride, because few people have the opportunity to write for such a wide, enduring audience, and also sobering, because I realize how many creative avenues have gone unexplored.

Thanks, Mitch, for everything you’ve done for Poptropica over the years! Your stories and good wit have brought a lot of life to the world of Poptropica that people will continue to enjoy in the years to come. Sail on, Captain Crawfish.

If you liked Mitch Krpata’s portfolio, be sure to also check out the portfolio of Jessica Devine (Skinny Moon), another copywriter we’ve featured here. If you’re into art, we recommend checking out the portfolios ofย other Poptropica artists as well:ย Tyson Burnham,ย Kyle Miller,ย Geoff Hassing,ย Nate Greenwall,ย Chris Goodwin,ย Abraham Evensen Tena,ย Jordan Leary,ย Lance Fry,ย Nasan Hardcastle, andย Ashley Lange.

Hope you enjoyed this portfolio! Stay awesome, Poptropicans. โ˜ ๏ธ

Poptropica Portfolio: Jessica Devine

Hey Poptropicans!

Here comes another Poptropica Portfolioโ€”but not just any Poptropica Portfolio!ย This one’s a little different from others we’ve featured, because instead of illustrations or animation reels, this portfolio featuresย copywriting and social media work.

If you’ve been with the fandom a while, you probably know whose work we’re talking about: the efforts ofย Skinny Moon, also known asย Jessica Devine. She left Poptropica this past Juneย to continue her previous career as a freelance copywriter and social media strategist, and recently launched a new websiteย for her business, “J. Devine Creative.”

jdevinecreative website

On the website, she features samples of her work in a galleryโ€”including work from Poptropica! As far as copywriting, she’s written 100+ blog posts for the Poptropica Creators’ Blog under the name “Skinny Moon,” as we know. As for social media, her gallery features numerous social media posts she’s done for Poptropica. Have a glimpse:

There’s more where that came from! Check out the rest of her gallery here.

Over on the Client Successes page, you can find several more segments relating to Skinny Moon’s time with Poptropica. A gallery of images accompanies each one, and you can flick through the pics with the rounded buttons below each pic.

This picture features a PHB blog post, PHB tweet, and Clawtropica blog post from Pop fan blogger Purple Claw. Again, there’s more where that came from!

jdevinecreative portfolio

Oh yes, she even featured our Skinny Moon memes. How cool is that?! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

That’s not all: “J. Devine Creative” also contains a page for testimonials. And here’s the super cool part: you probably know some of the people behind these testimonials, because she invited them straight out of the Poptropica community!

Here’s one that I (Slanted Fish) wrote:

When Jessica served as Poptropica’s community manager, she brought with her a wonderful dose of enthusiasm for all things Poptropica. Jessica (or “Skinny Moon,” as she is known in Poptropica circles) was instrumental in establishing good rapport between Poptropica and its fans, which had been missing before she came along. It was clear that she cared a lot about the fans of the game, from bloggers with large audiences to casual commenters on a small chat server. Not only did Jessica take the time to respond to our pressing questions (of which there were many!),ย she also took initiative in creating connections on social media, and that made all the difference.

And one from PHB author Slippery Raptor:

As community manager of Poptropica, Jessica was exemplary.ย She always made sure that every fan was connected to what was going on in Poptropica by holding frequent parties and activities. Jessica was very active and would promptly answer any questions the best she could. But of all the things she’s done, I’m most thankful for her help in personally ensuring that a package sent by Poptropica would arrive for me.

And one from another Poptropica Creatorโ€”senior story developerย Mitch Krpataโ€”that may really resonate with Poptropicans:

Jessica did the impossible: she made Poptropica relevant on social media.ย She met our users where they were, and thanks to her unique, energetic voice and keen sense of the zeitgeist, was able to revive interest in what had become a somewhat moribund brand. Our users really want her back. So do I!

Thanks to Skinny Moon, aka Jessica, for giving the PHB an opportunity to play a part in her new website! As you can tell from our testimonialsโ€”and countless more from plenty of other Poptropica fansโ€”we can definitely vouch for her good work. So, if you find yourself (or someone you know) in need of a solid copywriter and social media person, look no further than J. Devine Creative.

If you liked Skinny Moon/Jessica’s portfolio, be sure to also check out other Poptropica artists weโ€™ve featured here on the PHB: Tyson Burnham,ย Kyle Miller, Geoff Hassing,ย Nate Greenwall,ย Chris Goodwin,ย Abraham Evensen Tena,ย Jordan Leary,ย Lance Fry,ย Nasan Hardcastle, andย Ashley Lange.

Hope you enjoyed this portfolio! Stay awesome, Poptropicans. ๐ŸŒ™

Poptropica Portfolio: Tyson Burnham

Hey Poptropicans!

Another Poptropica Portfolio has been uncoveredโ€”this time we’re featuring the work of Tyson Burnham, lead animator and motion designer for StoryArc Media (which includes Poptropica). He’s the guy behind many of the island trailers and more.

The work below is taken from his portfolio website. Over in the section labeled “Game Environment Vector Illustration,” you can find these sweeping scenes from Poptropica (as well as some designs for what became the Mech on Steamworks Island):

In addition to illustrating, Tyson also created many of Poptropica’s animated trailer videos, such as the ones for Arabian Nightsย and Virus Hunter, among others. You can find a bunch of his animated work compiled together in this demo reel that includes work from Poptropica as well as other projects:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCRf-3uH6E8

Tyson Burnhamย still works at StoryArc Media, and also enjoys taking on freelance projects, as seen in the video above.

If you liked Tyson’s portfolio,ย be sure to also check out other Poptropica artists weโ€™ve featured: Kyle Miller,ย Geoff Hassing,ย Nate Greenwall,ย Chris Goodwin,ย Abraham Evensen Tena,ย Jordan Leary,ย Lance Fry,ย Nasan Hardcastle, andย Ashley Lange.

Speaking of artwork, be sure to join in on the PHBโ€™sย Community Creationsย this month! December has only just begun, but it’s never too early to start brainstorming.

Hope you enjoyed this portfolio! Stay awesome, Poptropicans.
