Community Creations: February 2021

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the February recap for Community Creations! February’s theme was Pretty in Pink (and the featured work is not in any particular order). Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue whatโ€™s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Pink Baron by Emuuuuuuu

Right away, I think you guys know that I’m a sucker for word play. And because of that, I really love the concept behind this submission! Not only is it a clever play on Red Baron’s name, but experimenting with a character’s color scheme is always fun too. And, of course, it never hurts to throw in that Dr. Hare reference. Remind me never to do laundry with him! Find the artist often in the comments.

Sir Alice the Heart Knight by Barefoot Knuckle

Oooh, pretty! Dare I say… pretty in pink! I love the incorporation of the Heart Astro Knight costume in this design, and it was a great choice to have the knight’s makeup and hair continue that same color scheme. And I think that the sun set-ish background similarly matches well! Plus, it’s great to see a reference to the Poptropica novels, as those characters aren’t in the spotlight as often. You can definitely see Alice’s fierce personality shine through. Find the artist often in the comments.

Completely in the Pink by Silver Horse

Ah, next up is a costume submission! I love that not only does this include a perfectly pink Poptropican outfit, but there’s a purr-fectly pink pet outfit to match! That extra step in making a matching pair really goes a long way. And to continue that match, it’s noteworthy that the Poptropican has some animalistic features themselves to truly sell the duo. I love that both outfits feature ears, a horn, nose/whiskers, and even a tail! I love, love love it (and I’m not just saying that because of the heart motif)! Find the artist often in the comments and on Discord.

Neon Pink by BlazingAngel123

Did you think that you could get through this month’s theme without seeing at least one Dr. Hare feature? Of course not! But even so, this is certainly a unique take on the doctor we all know and hate love. Playing off of Nintendo’s upcoming Neon White game, it’s as if our favorite furry scientist was plucked right out of the world of Poptropica and placed directly into this new virtual universe. Plus, I’ll say it again… I am a true sucker for good word play. Anyway, I love the sickly bright shades of white and pink, and the new outfit design is just excellent. Find the artist’s DeviantArt here.

Flower Elf Queen by AdventurersNHunters

And here we have our last, but certainly not least, perfectly pretty submission! Taking a Poptropican who is known for their color scheme and totally changing it presents quite the challenge, but it was pulled off wonderfully in this design. Though we typically recognize the Elf Queen in her gorgeous green getup, I’d say that pink suits her just as well! I would love to see her in this flowery attire come spring time. The Twisted Thicket forest in full bloom must be breathtaking! Find the artist’s DeviantArt here.

Honorable Mentions

All these pink submissions were super pretty, guys! Wonderful job!

March: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that monthโ€™s theme. So what is March’s theme? March’s theme isโ€ฆ

Ancient Egypt!

With the final Dream Island Contest winner recently being announced, what better time would it be feature Ancient Egypt as our theme? Secret of the Jade Scarab Island embraces the aesthetics and history of Ancient Egypt, and so I think that we should do the same in celebration. Though we have briefly visited Egypt before in Poptropica, this island will certainly present a whole new adventure!

You could take inspiration from Nabooti Island, the store’s Pharaoh or Mummy costumes, perhaps the Poptropica novels, or even the Secret of the Jade Scarab’s inside look itself, of course! Maybe, if we’re lucky, some of YOUR creations will even inspire the Poptropica Creators in the making of this new island! So, put on those ancient creativity caps and get to creating!

  • Comment below with a link to whatever youโ€™ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as youโ€™d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, Iโ€™m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so donโ€™t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Pop 5: My Favorite Islands ๐Ÿ

Hey Poptropicans, this is aย guest postย by Dangerous Dragon.ย Enjoy!

Hello, DD here! Today’s hot pop-topic is all about favorite islands. I’ll be sharing my “Pop 5” picks in this post, but I’m also looking forward to seeing your comments about some islands that you love. (The PHB has a whole list of islands.) Let’s get started!

Map full of islands (picture: idk)

#5: Monster Carnival

I wished I could rank this island higher, but there are so many good ones. Anyway, the story starts out with a carnival needing your help, and the art really makes you feel likeย you are at a real carnival. At first I wonder, “where’s the monster part?” Then comes the delightful twist: they all are monsters, thanks to Ringmaster Raven! Scary!

It was very disappointing to see Raven tortured by his town. I wrote more about this in my other guest post, “Why Ringmaster Raven is a real hero.” The island could’ve been better if he’d gotten a better ending, with the town giving him some much-needed love. Still, the story is fascinating, the designs are impressive, and the difficulty is suitably challenging

#4: Survival

Survival reminds me of survivor shows, andย I can feel the dangers of being out on the island as if in real life!ย The art is fabulous, and it’s good they don’t show too many ads, so it gives you the feeling of being stranded.

The story is truly chilling โ€” and what a twist to find that we are the hunted. Scary and surprising! All in all, a really good and challenging island.

#3: Mocktropica

Mocktropica reminded me of Back Lot Island but with games instead of films. The jokes were fun, and interestingly, one feature they made fun of made it into Pop: the pets!

As for the art, itย really feels exciting and adventurous. Everywhere you see Mega Fighting Bots and you wonder what’s up with that, but then you find out the twist โ€” shocking! The people running Pop were the people destroying it!

And the story itself is a unique, creative concept:ย you have to basically save Poptropica by bringing in the people who worked there to fix it. It’s also highly difficult โ€” I still remember Thinknoodles groaning when he played this island.

#2: Mission Atlantis

I loved how Mission Atlantis mixed fiction and nonfiction. It reminded me of the bookย Thea Stilton Special Edition: The Journey to Atlantis.

The first episode was simple, but it was fun getting to know many animals in the sea. The art is amazing: the creatures look very detailed, our submarine pod looks cool, and the water design is epic.

The story starts out with us getting a simple job but we soon discover much more: an entire ancient underwater city! Things get a lot more interesting, and it makes you feel likeย you are an explorer. It’s a difficult island, but that’s what makes the challenge fun.

#1: Time Tangled

Timeย Tangled was my first island,ย so I think of this as my birth island. It’s all about exploring the world, from caves to the Great Wall of China! This was the island which made me love Pop.ย I love stories about time traveling and the future!ย

The story is basic but it is creative. We find all the objects in random places, with hints from the Oracle, and overall it engages you in checking everywhere to search for the items.
The art is really good too, and I enjoyed the Fact Monsters back when that was a thing. And the whole island really takes your attention, but it’s not too difficult, with no twist.

That’s my list, now what about yours? There are a lot more good islands but I prefer these. Anyway, tell me about your favorite islands!ย

And if you’re feeling especially passionate, try writing for the PHB! Writing is a good habit, especially when it’s about what you love. I love Poptropica, and look where I am now!ย Thank you to Jeff Kinney, because if he hadn’t created Poptropica, we wouldn’t be here.

Also, surprise: today is my birthday! If you want to help make it special, please share your ideas in the comments below on how to celebrate a pop-tastic birthday, Poptropica style!

A Poptropica cake is a great idea!

This is DD popping out! Keep popping, Poptropicans! ~DD

Guest Posts, Jade Scarab Island, My Dream Island

Inside look at Dream Island winner: Secret of the Jade Scarab ๐Ÿ๐Ÿž

Hey Poptropicans, we have a very special guest with us! Girl Power (aka Lyndsey, or GwenBrightly on Poptropica) is one of the winners of Poptropica’s Design Your Dream Island Contest. In this post, she’ll be sharing about her winning idea, Secret of the Jade Scarab Island. Let’s get digging!

Hello, Poptropica Help Blog readers! I’d love to share more details about Secret of the Jade Scarab Island. I kept the descriptions spoiler free, so that certain plot points remain a surprise. ๐Ÿ™‚

I had a ton of fun brainstorming for Secret of the Jade Scarab in between grading homework and writing lesson plans (I was in the middle of student teaching). I grew up playing games like Cluefinders and Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, which gave me a love of games that teach about history. Ancient Egyptian lore and culture has always fascinated me, so it was awesome to have an excuse to use all that knowledge.

Sphinx from Nabooti Island

First look

Our story begins when the player arrives outside the Ancient Antiquities Museum in a bustling Egyptian city and follows signs inside to find that Claira the Curator is in a panic because the newest exhibit isnโ€™t going to open on time. Sheโ€™s lost contact with the team of archeologists who were supposed to be excavating King Khnurnโ€™s tomb (his name means “reborn sun” in Egyptian). Being the kind, friendly, and helpful Poptropican that you are, you volunteer to go investigate.

Spelunky: At the end of our rope.

When you arrive in the village of Iteru (which means “river” in Egyptian), a local merchant points you in the direction of the archeological dig, where you meet Howard Diggory, head egyptologist. He explains that bizarre things have been happening at the dig and that there are rumors of a mummyโ€™s curse, which has stalled progress in excavating and cataloging the tomb. Itโ€™s up to you to find the root of the problem and discover whether or not the tomb really is cursed.

Egyptian tomb from Nabooti Island

Youโ€™ll explore the tomb and village, speaking to the locals and gaining their trust through various tasks. Befriending the merchant is a good place to start. She’ll tell you all about the legend of the Jade Scarab, said to give its owner untold power, but only if you help her translate some old scrolls and track down her great nephew for her. Could someone be after the scarab?

Featured locations include:

  • The Ancient Antiquities Museum in Cairo – a place filled with displays of famous ancient Egyptian artifacts. Players can learn about life in ancient Egypt and maybe find some easter eggs from other islands. I like to imagine that itโ€™s owned by the Poptropica equivalent of Zahi Hawass – a very famous Egyptologist who has probably appeared in pretty much any documentary you may have watched on Egypt.

  • The village of Iteru – Close to the dig site. I envision something multi-levelled and filled with bright colors against the sandy/tan-ish color of the brick buildings. There are houses on the higher level and a market on the lower one. You can visit lots of townspeople to learn about the origins of the mummyโ€™s curse, tomb robbers, the importance of the Nile, etc. In order to get them to answer your questions, you have to run errands for them such as potentially fishing, sailing, gathering papyrus, etc. The merchantโ€™s shop is a highlight, as she gives the player a lot of the background on the Jade Scarab after you find her grandson (who is in an alleyway playing with a cat).
How Bazaar: Every time I look around.
  • The dig site – in the Valley of the Kings – lots of weird stuff is happening there, which has caused the locals to theorize that the team of archeologists have unleashed a curse. You can find typical archeologist tools, crates, tents, various artifacts that are being catalogued, and maybe a jeep. There are a few site members to interview, but several have fled, and one is in the hospital.
Camp Value: The Pup Tent sleep one
  • King Knurnโ€™s Tomb – Either underground or inside a cliff. The Jade Scarab is supposedly hidden somewhere deep inside. The player can explore different parts of the tomb throughout the story, with some getting unlocked as they progress. Skills learned from the villagers (like reading hieroglyphics) can be used here to solve puzzles and gather more information about the legends surrounding the Jade Scarab.
Hieroglyphs on Nabooti Island

Important characters

  • Claira the Curator – Runs the Ancient Antiquities Museum and is worried about the museumโ€™s latest exhibit not arriving on time. I chose her name because I wanted something with alliteration and a tie to Egypt, so I took the a-i-r from Cairo and inserted it into a name that went well with Curator.

  • Howard Diggory – Head egyptologist of the archeological dig, worried about the recent mishaps and potential curse. Very passionate about Egyptology and uncovering lost history. He was named Howard after Howard Carter, who discovered King Tutโ€™s tomb, and Diggory because heโ€™s an archeologist and spends a lot of time digging.
Striking a blow for workers’ rights.
  • Awantagi – the foreman of the dig. Heโ€™s the prickly type and doesnโ€™t particularly like you sticking your nose where it doesnโ€™t belong.
  • The Merchant – a mysterious old lady who sells a variety of objects (both ancient and modern). She tells the player the legend of the Jade Scarab after they have helped her translate some old scrolls (learn about Egyptian culture and book of the dead) and located her great nephew (who is chasing after a cat).
  • Bast – the Egyptian cat who likes to pop up and do cat stuff, like expect you to cater to her every whim.

Visuals

I am not the best of artists, but I do have some pictures from an old project I did for school that I used for inspiration.

I didnโ€™t necessarily plan for a pyramid to appear in Secret of the Jade Scarab, but I do really like the concept of having a scene that shows the Nile and some Egyptian boats.

This is sort of what Iโ€™d like the market to look like. Bright colors, hieroglyphics, and an abundance of different objects for players to interact with.

Anyway, thank you SO much to the PHB for reaching out, and to all of you for your interest! Itโ€™s such an honor to be able to share some of the ideas that have been floating around in my head for the past three months. I honestly can’t wait to see where Poptropica goes with this!

Free Membership Giveaways, Social Media, Video of the Week

A haunting chance for a lil Poptropica concert? ๐ŸŽค

Hey Poptropicans, Slanted Fish here with a few updates: an intriguing tweet, a membership giveaway, and a video highlight. Let’s pop right in!

Ever imagined a concert might be possible on Poptropica? Lil Nas X (perhaps best known for his country rap single “Old Town Road”) allegedly tweeted earlier, “I wanna do a Poptropica concert.”

The news was shared on our Discord server, the PHC, by Red Sun, though the tweet from @LilNasX became unavailable soon after, with no explanation. Maybe because of Poptropica’s platform limitations?

The idea isn’t totally random coming from Lil Nas X, though โ€” only a few months ago, he held an elaborate virtual concert on Roblox, another virtual world game for kids. Who’s to say whether he can pull it off on Poptropica, too? We’d certainly be down for it! ๐ŸŽค

We’re approaching the end of the month, which means it’s time to announce another lucky Poptropican to win our membership giveaway! Congrats, Emu โ€” after 10 years of playing Pop, you can finally cross getting a membership off your bucket list.

In case you missed it, the PHB is hosting a giveaway every month, and it’s easy to enter! Just comment on the Free Poptropica Membership page and leave at least two other comments around the PHB within the month to be entered into that monthโ€™s giveaway.

Weโ€™ll announce a winner sometime in the final week of each month. If you donโ€™t win, you can always try again for the next month! Full details ยป

Members can get some nifty exclusive items for their clubhouse, like this “Keepeth Out” sign. Speaking of which, check out my Clubhouse Tour!

In other news, the Pop Creators’ Blog posted a real throwback in their latest Video of the Week! This one’s a playthrough of the Haunted House mini-quest shared by Ramsha T:

This classic adventure used to be available from a card in the store back in 2009, then was later released as a special event in 2018. You can read more about it in our Haunted House Guide. If you want more special events like these, let Poptropica know in the comments of their post!

That’s it for this post. Stay tuned for a special one coming up here on the PHB โ€” it contains some pretty great secrets brought to us by one dreamy guest. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pop on, Poptropicans! โœŒ๏ธ

Fanfiction, The Villain Saga

Announcing “The Villain Saga,” a Poptropica fan series (with prologue)

Long, long ago, there were rumors of a Poptropica movie or TV series. Fans speculated on what it could be about, from a whole new story to a Mystery of the Map spinoff. Flash forward to today, and that dream never became a reality.

So in my traditional fashion, I decided to do it myself!

As much as I would like to see an epic, shiny, animated finished product, there’s no way I (and my carpal tunnel) could do all that, so I’ve decided to just release the script in episodic form! Stay tuned for a sneak peek of the first episode!

I’m going to try to update this fairly frequently (perhaps every week), but I won’t make any promises currently. I do have the plot all figured out from beginning to end, and plenty more script to release!

But enough with my rambling! Let’s get to the story!

FADE IN:

EXT. EREWHON PRISON — EVENING

We see the tall prison from a worms-eye view, near the ocean. Even though it is still evening, dark storm clouds surround the sky, shrouding the prison in night. A few windows glow as lights from inside the building are turned on.

A HELICOPTER lands, hovering a bit and billowing clouds of dust on the small landing pad next to the prison. It finally finishes its descent as we get a closer look at the area. Several prison guards are standing nearby, and a bearded man, DR. JUPITER, is waiting to greet whoever is inside the HELICOPTER.

A MAN jumps out from the side door. The darkness hides most of his face from view, along with a WOMAN who jumps out behind him.

MAN

Well, this isnโ€™t quite what I expected!

DR. JUPITER

(chuckles)

Did you expect a luxury hotel?

MAN

No, I just didnโ€™t think the weather would be soโ€ฆ

He looks down at the stormy waves, crashing against jagged rocks.

MAN (CONTโ€™D)

…clichรฉ.

DR. JUPITER

It helps protect us from onlookers, at least!

(He looks at the WOMAN)

And hello, Missโ€ฆ

The WOMAN extends her gloved hand. DR. JUPITER takes the cue and kisses it.

WOMAN

Lesser. Camille Lesser. Iโ€™m his assistant.

DR. JUPITER

You seem awfully dainty for this line of work.

WOMAN

Trust me.

(She grins. Thereโ€™s something a little suspicious about it.)

I have experience with these sort of people.

DR. JUPITER steps back. His friendly smile leaves his face.

DR. JUPITER

I should hope so. Weโ€™ve had many psychologists analyze our prisoners…few were able to help much.

MAN

They should be willing to work with me, if we give them time.

The smile returns to DR. JUPITERโ€™S face. He steps aside, motioning for the newcomers to enter the building.

DR. JUPITER

Well then, letโ€™s get started.

The two enter as the HELICOPTER ascends. DR. JUPITER remains behind with the GUARDS, discussing something with them.

As they cross through the doorway, framed with lightning-bolt decorated pillars, the WOMAN turns to the psychologist.

WOMAN

Well, that was certainly easier than I expected, Mr. D.

They enter a lit area, revealing the faces of notorious criminals DIRECTOR D. and MADEMOISELLE MOREAU. DIRECTOR D. smiles.

DIRECTOR D.

Trust me, miss Moreau, my plans are all very simple.

We look from the outside, as they head deeper into the prison.

FADE OUT.

“Erewhon contains some of the most notorious criminals in all of the world of Poptropicaโ€ฆbut could their abilities be used for someone’s advantage?

Director D., a cunning and charismatic spy, and Madimoiselle Moreau, a sweet yet spiteful Frenchwoman, are both villains who have managed to avoid the long arm of the law. They have teamed up to start their grandest plan yet, but they will need a little help.

Will justice and peace prevail above these many conflicting schemes, or will these villains be consumed by their own ambition and follow a murky path as the world collapses due to a plan they may not even be aware of?”
