Pop Places IRL, Vampire's Curse Island

Pop Places IRL: Vampire’s Curse

Pop Places IRL Header

Welcome back to “Pop Places IRL,” Poptropicans! Today, I’m bringing you an extra spoOOOooOoky setting. This time around, we’ll be traveling to Vampire’s Curse Island! Enjoying the series? Be sure to check out other Pop Places IRL posts.

So, first things first… where exactly does Vampire’s Curse take place? Though the setting is never directly stated, it is implied that the island is heavily influenced by the classic tale of Dracula. In fact, Count Bram is named after its author, Bram Stoker.

And, dear readers, the castle featured in Dracula is none other than the Bran Castle. Eerily similar to “Bram’s Castle,” don’t you think? The creepy tale made the IRL castle pretty famous, because you can even take tours of it today!

I suppose this castle comparison leads us to another question… where is the castle located? If you haven’t already guessed, the infamous Bran Castle is located in Romania, a country in Europe. Specifically, the towering construction is near Transylvania, a region especially known for vampire lore. Though the towns in the area are much more modern today, you can definitely still see the remains of older architecture.

However, when you begin to stray away from civilization on Vampire’s Curse Island, you’re sure to wind up deep in the woods (on your way to Bram’s castle, of course). A bit of a maze in game, I’m thinking IRL Romanian forests aren’t much easier to navigate at night. Though they might be less vampire-infested, Romania’s woods always seem to come with their own creepy lore either way.

Finally, I think it’s important to touch on the graveyards of Romania, considering their own spooky connotation in-game, where the grand Mausoleum has Latin that reads “meminervnt omnia amantes,” translating to “remember all the lovers.”

This sure adds to the island’s spooky aesthetic, but how does its appearance hold up to its counterparts in real life? It turns out that Romania has a pretty famous grave site called The Merry Cemetery, filled with surprisingly colorful gravestones. What a contrast!

Welp, that wraps up our IRL tour of Vampire’s Curse! Did it live up to your Halloween-y expectations? Hope we didn’t spook you too much this year. 😉

But I’m curious… what do you think? Have you ever been to Romania? How do our comparisons to the game hold up? What other islands do you want to see in this series? Be sure to leave a comment with your thoughts below!

La revedere! Don’t let the vampire bats bite!

Hey, Poptropicans, how’s it going? It’s Lucky Joker here, and welcome to another Pop Fan Artist Spotlight! Today, I’ll be showcasing the wonderful work of X1-gamer2538!

X draws in a style that is…hmm, how do I put it?…flippin’ AMAZING! It’s so shiny, bold and professional — X is one of my new favorite artists for sure. You might’ve seen some of his art featured in Community Creations, and with good reason. Check out this gallery of some of his work (and click to enlarge the images):

Are you amazed yet? If you want to see more of X’s art, check him out on DeviantArt — he’s a fairly active poster.

Well, that concludes this spotlight! I hope you enjoyed this look into a Poptropica fan’s artwork. If you’ve made some of your own Poptropica fan art, we’d love for you to share it on our DeviantArt group gallery, We-Love-Poptropica.

Incredible Suggestions Needed!

Hello, everyone, how’s it going? It’s Lucky Joker here, and good news: the Poptropica Creators want our feedback!

On Instagram and Facebook, the Poptropica Creators asked us, the players, to give our thoughts on Poptropica’s islands by commenting on their posts.

Unsurprisingly, most people wanted more new islands on Pop Original. I would strongly agree with that. But the Creators are also interested in knowing how they can make islands better, so be sure to leave them your suggestions!

Personally, though, I’d like to see Poptropica host another Create Your Dream Island Contest — because if the reason we’re not getting any new islands as frequently as we used to is due to a creativity/idea shortage, then I think it’s the perfect time for a second one. I’m sure any Poptropican would love a chance to have their island idea in the game!

In other news, there’s an advertisement for Disney·Pixar’s newest movie, Incredibles 2, which is accessible from the island map. It’s basically the exact same as the ad we saw before when we were still awaiting the movie’s premiere back in May.

The object is to escape the underminer by making it to the finish line while dodging and blasting obstacles without losing all six of your lives. Your lives are represented by the movie’s logo, which you’ll find in the top left corner along with a progress bar (to see how close you are to the finish).

Once you complete the game successfully, you’ll earn a Grow Power card and Laser Eyes Power card (which we saw the last time). (The Grow Power card looks a little odd, but oh well. 😛 )

So what are your thoughts on Incredibles 2, and more importantly…what are your opinions on the islands of Poptropica?

That’s it for now! Thanks for reading and I’ll talk to you all very soon…pop on!

Home Island

A new Home Island brings new surprises

Hello, everyone! This is Gentle Dolphin here with a big Poptropica update! (In case you missed it, I’m a new staff writer on the Poptropica Help Blog.)

Ever since the first concept sketch of the new Home Island buildings back in July, we’ve been anticipating the arrival of this massive update. Now, three months later, the new Home Island is here for us to explore! Here’s a video tour from Poptropica on Facebook:

Although the old Home Island layout will be dearly missed (R.I.P. 2015–2018), this new layout is still a welcome change to Poptropica. Upon arriving, you will immediately notice a mix of old and new features.

Several features that were originally on Home Island have stayed in some form or another. The exteriors of the movie theater, the “New You” shop, and the store (now called the “Pop! Store”) have been completely redone. The interiors are still the same as before; whether or not the Creators plan to renovate the interiors is unknown.

The billboarddaily spin wheel, and photo booth are untouched except for the fact that they have all been moved to different places across the island, like the wheel being taken out of the theater to be placed outside the store (and run by Captain Jack Sparrow?).

There are a few new notable features as well. First, there are some new platforms to run across and some bouncy items to jump on, like this “Pop-O-Rama” popcorn machine by the movie theater and an empty space that might be used for displaying something in the future. It doesn’t seem to be an ad space, since there’s currently a Ninjago ad on the other side of the island.

As for the bigger additions, we can’t use them just yet since they’re still being developed, but we can make some educated guesses as to what they will be used for. These new features-to-be are a pet barn, a rocket ship, and a tree house.

The pet barn, which was in the sneak peek from July, may be a place where players can adopt pets. What kinds of pets will be available and whether there will any member perks for this feature are up for speculation.

A sign at the top of the rocket ship building calls it the “Blast-Off! Arcade.” The astronaut standing by says, “The new arcade will be out of this world,” suggesting that it might be a new common room or a place for playing mini-games.

Next to the arcade-rocket, and below the portal to Realms, is a mysterious little house, with one window and a lightbulb on top. It’s not clear what it’s for, if anything, since the player’s home is likely to be elsewhere…

…in the tree house, where it appears that players will get a new place to live. It might not be as fancy as the tree house in Worlds, but it’s still got character. 😉 Players might be able to buy furniture and other items to furnish their homes, like we can on Worlds. Maybe pets will be able to live at home with their owners, too? It’s definitely intriguing that a feature originally from Poptropica Worlds is making its way to Poptropica Original.

On that note, the Creators also wrote on their blog that they’ve been and still are working hard to make sure that Poptropica will stick around after Flash is no longer supported by the end of 2020. (They also mentioned it in an Instagram comment last month.) As for Poptropica Worlds, the Creators are currently working on new updates there as well. Here’s what they said:

And for those of you wondering about Worlds, don’t worry, new updates are headed there too! The Creators have been working on some updates that *have* to happen to Poptropica so we can keep it around after Flash is no longer supported, but that doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned Worlds!

What do you think of the Home Island update? What do you think that these new features will be used for? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Thank you for reading, and have a good day!
