community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the September recap for Community Creations! September’s theme was seasons & weather and the featured work is not in any particular order. Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue whatโ€™s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Season Fashion by xXLilAngel2004Xx

Ooh, covering all of our bases right away! Each outfit shows great personality, including all four seasons. The character designs show fantastic effort and attention to detail! Even the backgrounds match the seasons very well. The unique expressions, clothes, and posses show slight movement and hint at a much more in depth backstory behind each girl. Wonderful submission! Find her DeviantArt here.

Fall Forest by happyclonetrooper

Wow, beautiful! This artist never ceases to amaze with her warm lighting and color schemes. The landscape is simple but stunning, with a very welcoming ambient light. Both the setting and outfits of the characters are particularly appropriate for fall, fitting our theme perfectly. A world is really built around the focal characters of the piece, like a snapshot taken during a walk through the woods. Stunning! Find her DeviantArt here.

Seasons of Poptropica by Magniventris

Haha, amazing take on this month’s theme! The different scenes show a strong grasp on the topic, with a fantastic creative approach. There are more than four seasons when you stop to think about it! I mean, just look at Netflix! Ha, anyway, this piece truly feels straight out of a graphic novel. The humor is wonderful and the composition/perspective within each panel is well crafted. Plus, just look at that amazing color and line-art! Excellent! Find her DeviantArt here.

It’s Cold Outside by NineTenOnetyOne

Aw, cute! Focusing on winter, this piece perfectly encompasses the coziness of cooler temperatures. The outfit designs are very appropriate, and the minimal features still tell a big story about the dynamic between the characters. Wonderful personality is communicated through a small, cute scene. Great submission! Find her DeviantArt here.

Gentle and Amy – Spring 2019 by Gentle Dolphin

Wow, we almost hit all the seasons, huh? The vibrancy of spring is clearly shown in this piece through the warm, bold colors. Even the pose of the character displays a bouncy movement! The relationship of Gentle and her cat is super cute, conveying strong positive vibes when paired with the flowery background and bright color scheme. This piece is a perfect example of how a very simple background can make a piece look that much more finished and aesthetically pleasing! Fantastic, I love it. Find her DeviantArt here.

Honorable Mentions

That’s all of the features this month folks! Be sure to keep sending in submissions throughout the entire month! I’m excited to see what you guys come up with next. ๐Ÿ™‚

October: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that monthโ€™s theme. So what is October’s theme? October’s theme isโ€ฆ

Inktober!

Inktober is a huge trend throughout the art community, but certainly a big pressure to get done everyday. Don’t know what it’s all about? To put it simply, Inktober is a challenge to draw something every day in the month of October, with each day built off of a different prompt. Some people go all out, while others keep it more casual. But because of the broad prompts, we can apply Inktober to all kinds of creations! Now, I’m not asking you guys to submit 31 pieces, nor do they have to be ink drawings. No! But anything Poptropica related that you’ve created based on Inktober prompts, or Halloween themes, is completely acceptable!

Below, you’ll find a huge list of the official 2019 Inktober prompts, but please feel free to mix and match and add your own twists when submitting into Community Creations! This month is all about spooky creativity, so stay flexible! For example, drawing some Zomberries would be perfect for “mindless.” Perhaps a scene from Twisted Thicket for the “overgrown” prompt? Or a huge Red Dragon for prompt 12! Go wild! You can even apply these themes to literature, costumes, you name it.

  • Comment below with a link to whatever youโ€™ve created OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as 3 honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as youโ€™d like!

I will always be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. Bonus points if you make a compelling description for your piece! While quality counts, Iโ€™m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so donโ€™t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Blast from the Past

Birthday blog and bugs be gone

Hey, everyone! September may be ending soon, but Poptropica’s 12th birthday celebration is still going strong! In addition to the free cake car costume, the Creators’ Blog is also celebrating with a special post highlighting some of the biggest moments from Poptropica’s early years.

Adventures...on a blimp!

This mini-retrospective post covers the first five years of Poptropica’s life (2007โ€“2011). It’s interesting that they mention old islands that were recently taken away (though perhaps not permanently), and they even feature an ASG account! (Perhaps they’re okay with this aspect of glitching?)

We’ve shared their post below, but you can read the original on the Creators’ Blog. Without further ado, let the nostalgia begin:

Poptropica is officially TWELVE YEARS OLD! Can you believe it!? Here’s a look back at some of our favorite moments from the past twelve years!

2007: Poptropica was created by none other than Jeff Kinney, author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series! Do you remember what the first island was?

Pop Blog 2008

2008: The Poptropica Blog started! That’s right, we’ve been blogging about all things Poptropica since 2008! Also, some seriously stellar islands came out, including Nabooti Island and Spy Island!

Avatar Studio

2009: Multiverse and Avatar Studio. Did you know the clubhouses in today’s Poptropica use a lot of the same technology as Multiverse?

And good ol’ Poptropica Avatar Studio. It doesn’t work quite the way it used to, but you can still check it out HERE.

Poptrpoica Map 2010

2010: Islands, islands, and more islands! Which of these islands was NOT released that year: Cryptids, 24 Carrot, Steamworks, Skullduggery, or Reality TV?

Poptropica Guidebook

2011: Poptropica: The Official Guidebook was released! We also announced our first line of toys, were named one of the top 50 websites of the year, AND released a few more islands!

Phew! That was a really amazing first five years of Poptropica! Stay tuned for our next installment of Poptropica favorites. In the meantime, get on over to Poptropica to get your FREE 12th birthday gift!

A part 2 covering the rest is likely coming soon, based on the post’s ending. For a more in-depth look into Poptropica’s history, check out our Poptropica Yearbook posts here on the PHB!

In a recent “Bug Fix Friday” post, Blue Tooth made note of some recent updates to smooth out the gameplay experience. The chase scene from Arabian Nights: Episode 3 is working properly, and the game screen now shrinks to fit on mobile devices. Nice.

The end of this post tells readers to keep their eyes peeled for future updates. What kinds of updates do you think will be coming? Possibly the return of a beloved creepy island? Only time will tell…

Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

Home Island, Store

Haunted Home Island with spooky store goodies

Oh hallo…weenever expected spooky season to be upon us so soon!

Coming just at the close of September and only a couple weeks after its previous fall makeover, Home Island has been redecorated once again, this time with Halloween charm. Check it out:

A deep blue-green night sky envelops the island, which is glowing green from its windows, plus covered in jack-o-lanterns, floating candles, and other fun decor. Even the duckie got dolled up as Dr. Hare! You can also smash pumpkins and catch a slimy candy apple from the local witch, all in good fun.

As you might’ve seen, the store has also joined in on the Halloween party! This update includes four new costumes, one follower, and a prank.

Hop on over to get your very own:

  • Ghastly Pumpkin Follower
  • Dance-a-corn Costume (tap space bar to dance)
  • Fairytale Costume (tap space bar to read)
  • Headlessman Costume (tap space bar to twirl)
  • Inflatable Rex Costume
  • Witch’s Brew (prankโ€”tap space bar to throw the potion, which turns the nearest character’s head into a fish, rat, or frog)

Joy of joys, each one of these items is available to all playersโ€”no membership required!

With Halloween approaching, that means it’s almost time for an annual PHB tradition: the Halloween Costume Contest! We’ll have more details for you in October, but with Poptropica already on the festivities, it’s not too early to start thinking about your Halloween outfit… ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿฆ•โœจ

Enjoy the goodies, Poptropicans!

Creators

Artist interview with creator Jonathan Trimble, and reason to tremble?

Hey Poptropicans! Heard of Jonathan Trimble?

Jonathan is a Poptropica artist who’s designed tons of cool stuff you may have seen in the game. We featured a Pop Portfolio of his work on the PHB last year, which you should definitely check out!

Anyway, this week on the Creators’ Blog, in addition to a new obnoxiously-placed Poptropica/ad video that now plays on the bottom corner of the screen with no option to be removed, we’re treated to a special post: an artist interview with Jonathan Trimble! It’s short and sweet, so we’ve shared it below, but you can also view the original on the Creators’ Blog. Here it is:

Meet Jonathan, one of our awesome artists busy with designing new characters and worlds in Poptropica! We call him JT around HQ. He took some time to do a few Q’s and A’s just for you!

Q:ย What was your favorite thing to work on in Poptropica?

A:ย Designing and animating the monkeys on Monkey Wrench Island!

Q:ย Who’s your favorite Poptropican? Favorite Island?

A:ย My favorite Poptropican is Amelia on Home Island because she’s so helpful. My favorite Island is a classic! Skullduggery! I miss it so.

Q:ย What kind of artwork do you make when you’re not working on Poptropica?

A:ย I like taking photos and drawing fantastic lands, making ceramic sculptures and designing logos– I can’t ever seem to make up my mind.

Q:ย What’s your advice for young artists who’d like to go pro?

A:ย Draw every day and never stop. Good days or bad, make sure you draw something, anything! The practice will pay off more than you could ever know!

In other news, the fall update on Home Island that came last week to mobile is now on the online version, too, so enjoy the orange leaves! ๐Ÿ‚

Last week, Blue Tooth also hit us with a Flashback Friday featuring the spooky horrors of running away from zombies on Zomberry Island. The post adds, somewhat ominously, “if you haven’t had the chance to experience the purple plague, you might be able to get a taste soonโ€ฆ!”

Since Blue Tooth also brings up Halloween coming up next month in the blog post about fall, and Zomberry has a clear creepy theme going, perhaps the Creators are planning a spine-tingling, bone-trembling surprise for us coming up? We’ll have to wait and see… ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘ป

Stay alive, Poptropicans.

Guest Posts, My Place in Poptropica

The Chronicles of Shiny Bird: Part 4 of 4

This is the final segment of a four-part extendedย โ€œMy Place in Poptropicaโ€ย guest postย series byย ShinyB1rd. Catch up on parts one, two, and three here. Enjoy!

The Great Decay

Another glorious year has passed, and the ever-so-beloved Shiny Bird continues to restore harmony across Poptropica, along with the mysterious stranger who goes by the alias Mighty Skyโ€ฆ In other newsโ€ฆ The Booted Bandit of Pelican Rock was reportedly caught by Shiny Bird after a series of unusual eventsโ€ฆ

Channel 7 Pop News, 1st day of year 3 of the Gilded Age

I entered 2016 optimistic considering we were just coming out of the Gilded Age. In the beginning of the year, I still went by my usual routine with Poptropica: log on every day and cause mayhem in the Early Poptroica common rooms. However, as the weeks went on, I began to realize that Poptropica hadnโ€™t posted anything on the Creators’ Blog for some timeโ€ฆ Strangeโ€ฆ Even when they did post, it wasnโ€™t anything that interesting (to me). I was looking for new content, but there hadnโ€™t been anything new for a whileโ€ฆ By the end of January, I was beginning to question the future of the game.

In the midst of February, Monkey Wrench Island came out. Even though it was short and intended for new players, I found it to be quite enjoyable, fun, and entertaining. Other than this, however, February wasnโ€™t all that better than the previous month. The Creators’ Blog was becoming stale and new content was scarceโ€ฆ Whatโ€™s going on here? I wondered.

Months had passed and nothing interesting was coming out of Poptropica. Sure, there were a few prizes here and there, but nothing really worthwhile to me. I was beginning to play less and less, to the point where I only checked in on Poptropica once a week โ€” not even logging onto my account, but just looking at the Creatorโ€™s Blog to see if they had come out with something new.

In April, the news of some โ€œnew Poptropicaโ€ came about. I initially had mixed feelings for it, but I wanted to stick with an open mind โ€” after all, they just announced it, so I’d have to wait and see before I could rightfully judge.

Desolate

โ€ฆthe best word I can use to describe the period between 2016โ€“mid-2018โ€ฆ I logged on very little, as there was little to do. Nothing had me excited. Even the launch of the overdue Poptropica Worlds was a disappointment for me.

To make matters worse, late 2017-2018 was also a period where I entered a state of deep depression (admittedly, it still persists to this day, but it is not as bad as it was during this time), hence my online activity was becoming quite scarce.

Ignition

October of 2018 came around, and I still didnโ€™t played Poptropica as much as I once did. I was in my senior year in high school and was beginning to drift my attention away from the game and more into school. As October dragged on, however, a thought randomly popped into my head: the annual Halloween costume contest on the PHB!

Lately, I had been checking in with the PHB, as it was the only place that was coming out with cool and interesting things about Poptropica. Meanwhile, the game itself seemed to have been abandoned by its creators.

Anyway, once I remembered the annual contest, I wanted to participate. So I checked the PHB, and sure enough, they were hosting another contest. I read through the post andโ€”OH MY PRETZEL STICKS, THEY’RE GIVING AWAY FREE MEMBERSHIP?????!

I froze, fantasizing about the endless possibilities of a free membershipโ€ฆ the exclusive stuff I could get from the storeโ€ฆ  the bonus quests I could gain access to at the end of each islandโ€ฆ the clout I would get from the glowing membership status that would appear at the top left corner of the screen next to my battle rank every time someone hovers their mouse over me. I could hear myself laughing in the common rooms at everyone else as I’d spam the spacebar with the exclusive Poptropolis Games Discus in my hands, freezing them, and forcing them to their knees and beg for mercy. โ€œFEAR ME, NONS!โ€ I would shout.

But in order for all that to happen, I must take actionโ€ฆ Iโ€™m now a man on a mission. Immediately, I went to work. I logged onto Poptropica filled with new determination, a feeling I hadnโ€™t felt in years…

A New Hope

He sat there, staring back at the computer screen, proud of his creation. But would it be enough to take the prize home? Hours of effort put in, even creating a little poem about it just for safe measureโ€ฆ But could it all have been in vain? Only time would tell.

He had wanted to be a part of this particular community for a long time, but he never knew where to start. Deep inside, he was more afraid than anything. This is my best shot at it, he thought. He’d spent hours writing just one comment, consistently erasing it and polishing it in an effort to make a good first impressionโ€ฆ

When the midnight hour struck, he settled down and hovered his mouse over the button that read โ€œpost.โ€ Deep breath. Closed his eyes, and, in a whisper: here goes nothingโ€ฆ He lifted his finger… and pressed down…

…The End.

A Final Word

Youโ€™ve reached the end. Yaaaay! Now, a few words: I can hear some of you saying, โ€œShInY, hOw DaRe YoU EnD In A cLiFfHaNgEr! ThAtโ€™s, LiKe, BaSiCaLlY A CrImE โ€” dId YoU wIn ThE cOnTeSt???” Yes, I did!

I won, got my membership, and enslaved every innocent soul in every common room spamming the Poptropolis Discus for hours on end got back to playing Poptropica more frequently. I even slithered my way into involvement in the PHBโ€ฆ well, kinda. So far, the only things I’ve really done around here is hang out in the comments section on each blog post and post my opinions on things, maybe referencing a meme or two… and thatโ€™s really it.

Later, I discovered the PHB Discord server. I joined, but never really said anything, lol. Mainly because Iโ€™mโ€ฆ wellโ€ฆ kinda scared to be honest (as I mentioned in my author’s note at the beginning, I am a little socially awkward, hehe).

Anyway, when the summer (of 2019) hit, I decided to take a break from Poptropica, as well as refrain from posting comments on the PHB, in order to focus on college. (Believe me when I say it: college hit me hard, like, for me itโ€™s basically the equivalent of being run over by a bus.) Still, I might come back and try to be even more involved in this community, though probably not until I get myself adjusted to college. Weโ€™ll see how it goes.

Well, I hope you liked my little story, despite the length. (I was originally gonna try to keep it shorter, but I’m just kinda used to writing long and didn’t want this to be any different, so I ditched that idea, lol.)

My fellow Poptropicans, donโ€™t forget to stay fresh, and go crazy out there (not too crazy, though!). Most of all: keep on shining!

This is your friendly neighborhood bird signing off. Peace.
