Ask the Joker #7: Naming nonsense, queuing quests, and a hurtling Hare

Ask the Joker is a Q&A segment here on the PHB where you, dear readers, are invited to send in your Poptropica questions to have them answered, with wit, wisdom, and wisecracks, by one Incredible Joker.

What is your name? ~MaryannTheConqueror

There are many unique names in Poptropica. My name is Incredible Joker but you can call me Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV. Or make something up, I donโ€™t care. ๐Ÿคฃ

I got jokes.

What is your quest? ~MaryannTheConqueror

I have hobbies and pastimes, no quests. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘ Currently, though, I suppose I am trying to get a new character in a game I am playing. Halfway there and fourteen days left, wish me luck. ๐Ÿ˜›๐Ÿ‘

If you want a more Poptropica-related answer, I guess Iโ€™m trying to keep patience until new islands arrive. ๐Ÿ™ƒ I would like to finish the few I havenโ€™t if they decide to add them back someday, and I guess to see how quickly I can do the new ones.

A colorless world, as envisioned for the upcoming Goofball Island.

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen Dr. Hare flying through space? ~MaryannTheConqueror

This one took a bit more time than the others. I tried to be โ€˜accurateโ€™ but itโ€™s hard to do this math. ๐Ÿ˜… Assuming he is 30-40 and the average size for a male of that age, heโ€™s about 196.9 pounds with an arm length of around 25 inches. Looking back over the scene with him in space, he moves his arms about 5 times per second. The formula would then be Uโ‰ˆ3*5*0 as he doesnโ€™t use his abilities to propel himself, making his velocity 0, which I guess makes sense. At least thatโ€™s what I got. (Assuming he isnโ€™t carrying any coconuts, of course.)

You try calculating the airspeed velocity of an unladen Dr. Hare flying through space…

How can you send in your questions to Ask the Joker?

Thatโ€™s a great question! You can use the following methods:

  • ๐Ÿ“ง Send an email to justaskthejoker (at) gmail (dot) com. This way, youโ€™ll get to keep your questions a surprise when they get answered on the blog.
  • ๐Ÿ’ฌ Comment on the latest Ask the Joker post. Your questions will be publicly visible before they appear in a Q&A post, but this allows others to interact with your question if they so choose. If you donโ€™t have an email address, you can enter a fake one in the email field when you post your comment.

See you all next time, and remember: You canโ€™t spell Poptropica without letters.

Arabian Nights Island, Guest Posts

Different POV: The Sultan is exposed ๐Ÿ‘ณ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by Emu, who will be offering a different point of view on a Poptropica story: who is the real villain in Arabian Nights Island? ‘Cause that Sultan is looking real suspicious. Enjoy!

Welcome to my first DPOV (or “deepawv” in my Southern accent)! This series takes a look at Poptropica plots and characters from a less heard of, non-traditional, different point of view.

Today we’ll be looking at Arabian Nights, a Poptropica tale where (spoilers) Samhal the genie and Scheherazade the princess-turned-thief are often thought of as the villains. But now, let’s turn the tables!

He’s just a poor mixed up sฬถoฬถuฬถlฬถ er, genie.

We’re going to look more closely at the Sultan. Now, I know many Pop fans have confirmed that the Sultan is a bad man, but oh, he’s a BAD bad man. Let’s get started. ๐Ÿง Remember this diary entry from Scheherazade before she ran away from home?

I would read this book, would you?

So, after reading that, you can obviously tell that the Sultan has a HUGE greed problem. ๐Ÿ˜‚ He has quite the obsession problem also. Plus I gotta say, it’s pretty shady of him to let his daughter get almost kidnapped while he was caught up with finding out the name of a little green man.

Plus… HIS. POOR. WIFE. She must’ve gone through so much! She looks sooooo done with this in the family portraits! We never find out what happened to her, but I mean it’s reasonable to assume she just left! Sad.

Donโ€™t hate me for what Iโ€™m about to say.

Here’s my takeโ€”get ready for itโ€”I don’t think Samhal is bad. Are you glaring at that sentence? I get it, but here’s why I think the opposite.

The Sultan was an insanely greedy, self-centered, inconsiderate man, and I do believe that he bribed Samhal into dealing with him. Of course, by nature of his being, the genie did have no choice. We will never know what Samhal was like before the Sultan obsessed over tracking down this genie, and put his family on the line just to grow wealthy with his help. Besides, I think it’s pretty sad that even after the Sultan’s wife probably left, he still wasn’t scared of losing his daughter.

Had to include this!

Thanks for reading my first DPOV! What are your thoughts on this post? Drop your suggestions for another DPOV in the comments.

Keep at it, Poptropicans!

Fairy Tale Island, Sneak Peeks

The magical designs of Fairy Tale Island ๐Ÿงšโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŽจ

Once upon a time (a few months ago, to be exact), a Poptropica fan named Perfect Crab had an idea for a fairy tale-themed island called… well, Fairy Tale Island. The Creators of Poptropica loved the idea so much that they selected it as one of the three winners of the Create Your Dream Island contest.

Many fans such as Perfect Crab awaited the arrival of the winning islands, yearning to go on more adventures in the great wide somewhere. Suddenly, the Creators shared some concept art for some of Fairy Tale Island’s many characters. Now let us take a look at what stories are awaiting us in this magical adventure!

The first image shows some character designs for the cast of Little Red Riding Hood. Our human characters are a modern Red Riding Hood(ie), a sweet grandma, and a hairy woodcutter. Of course, you cannot have Little Red Riding Hood without the Big Bad Wolf and his many expressive faces. While this isn’t the only modern adaptation of the story, this will definitely be an interesting take regardless.

Next, we have six of the seven dwarves from Snow White. It’s interesting that the dwarves are drawn in a different style from normal Poptropicans; they even have noses and fingers! Why are the dwarves drawn this way? Why are they wearing a human disguise like the gnomes from Gravity Falls? Where is the one other dwarf? Some of their secrets will be revealed shortly.

Moving along, here are some costumes fit for royalty. Amongst the kings and queens, we can easily spot Cinderella thanks to her iconic glass slippers. Interestingly, Cinderella also has a wild hairstyle and punk rocker outfit. Is that her normal attire before she goes to the ball, or perhaps her disguise at the ball?

There is also a lady dressed in purple accompanied with a note which says “Modify Kira scrub outfit and props”. We currently have a named character who is likely a medical professional. Could she be Cinderella’s fairy godmother?

Finally, here is concept art for the island’s possible villain: Rumpelstiltskin. His longer limbs and devilish features help him stand out from Poptropica villains of the past. Perhaps he has something to do with the fairy tales going awry? What is this sinister imp’s master plan, and is he working alone?

All of these character designs give us a lot to think about regarding the island’s story and tone. The modern takes on classic fairy tales are reminiscent to 2000’s fairy tale parody movies like Shrek, Hoodwinked, and Enchanted. Wouldn’t it be interesting to defeat Rumpelstiltskin and celebrate with a dance party?

Now these designs are a taste of what is to come. The full story of Fairy Tale Island is set to be told before this summer, so keep one eye on the Creators’ Blog and another on the Poptropica Help Blog. We cannot wait to see what Perfect Crab and the Creators have in store for us!

Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

March right in with member gifts and story features

Hello, everyone! March has finally arrived, and a new month means new member gifts. As always, active members will receive their gifts by logging in to Poptropica any time this month. Let’s take a look!

The March member gifts are admittedly simple but still pretty cute. The first exclusive item is a Handheld Game (sadly not playable), and the second is a Clear Backpack complete with school supplies.

Last but not least, members also receive three adorable Plush Hugs. These three plushies based on a bear, a cat, and a pig are as adorable as they are huggable. If you’re interested in owning these items and more, feel free to purchase a membership or enter the PHB’s Free Membership Giveaway!

Yesterday, the official Poptropica Instagram page featured more posts from talented fans. We have art starring iconic Pop characters such as Shark Boy and Ringmaster Raven (drawn by the PHB’s own Maryann), comedic creations like the Bardito and Dr. Hare’s transformation, and even some Poptropica-inspired costumes made in Animal Crossing!

That’s all for now, but there’s more news to come. Stay tuned for a behind-the-scenes look at a magical island coming soon this year!

Thank you for reading, and have a good day!

Community Creations

Community Creations: February 2021

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the February recap for Community Creations! February’s theme was Pretty in Pink (and the featured work is not in any particular order). Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue whatโ€™s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Pink Baron by Emuuuuuuu

Right away, I think you guys know that I’m a sucker for word play. And because of that, I really love the concept behind this submission! Not only is it a clever play on Red Baron’s name, but experimenting with a character’s color scheme is always fun too. And, of course, it never hurts to throw in that Dr. Hare reference. Remind me never to do laundry with him! Find the artist often in the comments.

Sir Alice the Heart Knight by Barefoot Knuckle

Oooh, pretty! Dare I say… pretty in pink! I love the incorporation of the Heart Astro Knight costume in this design, and it was a great choice to have the knight’s makeup and hair continue that same color scheme. And I think that the sun set-ish background similarly matches well! Plus, it’s great to see a reference to the Poptropica novels, as those characters aren’t in the spotlight as often. You can definitely see Alice’s fierce personality shine through. Find the artist often in the comments.

Completely in the Pink by Silver Horse

Ah, next up is a costume submission! I love that not only does this include a perfectly pink Poptropican outfit, but there’s a purr-fectly pink pet outfit to match! That extra step in making a matching pair really goes a long way. And to continue that match, it’s noteworthy that the Poptropican has some animalistic features themselves to truly sell the duo. I love that both outfits feature ears, a horn, nose/whiskers, and even a tail! I love, love love it (and I’m not just saying that because of the heart motif)! Find the artist often in the comments and on Discord.

Neon Pink by BlazingAngel123

Did you think that you could get through this month’s theme without seeing at least one Dr. Hare feature? Of course not! But even so, this is certainly a unique take on the doctor we all know and hate love. Playing off of Nintendo’s upcoming Neon White game, it’s as if our favorite furry scientist was plucked right out of the world of Poptropica and placed directly into this new virtual universe. Plus, I’ll say it again… I am a true sucker for good word play. Anyway, I love the sickly bright shades of white and pink, and the new outfit design is just excellent. Find the artist’s DeviantArt here.

Flower Elf Queen by AdventurersNHunters

And here we have our last, but certainly not least, perfectly pretty submission! Taking a Poptropican who is known for their color scheme and totally changing it presents quite the challenge, but it was pulled off wonderfully in this design. Though we typically recognize the Elf Queen in her gorgeous green getup, I’d say that pink suits her just as well! I would love to see her in this flowery attire come spring time. The Twisted Thicket forest in full bloom must be breathtaking! Find the artist’s DeviantArt here.

Honorable Mentions

All these pink submissions were super pretty, guys! Wonderful job!

March: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that monthโ€™s theme. So what is March’s theme? March’s theme isโ€ฆ

Ancient Egypt!

With the final Dream Island Contest winner recently being announced, what better time would it be feature Ancient Egypt as our theme? Secret of the Jade Scarab Island embraces the aesthetics and history of Ancient Egypt, and so I think that we should do the same in celebration. Though we have briefly visited Egypt before in Poptropica, this island will certainly present a whole new adventure!

You could take inspiration from Nabooti Island, the store’s Pharaoh or Mummy costumes, perhaps the Poptropica novels, or even the Secret of the Jade Scarab’s inside look itself, of course! Maybe, if we’re lucky, some of YOUR creations will even inspire the Poptropica Creators in the making of this new island! So, put on those ancient creativity caps and get to creating!

  • Comment below with a link to whatever youโ€™ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as youโ€™d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, Iโ€™m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so donโ€™t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!
