Monster Carnival Island, Steam Bundle

Monster Carnival’s Rewritten Ending ๐Ÿฆ๐ŸŽก

Hey Poptropicans. You know Monster Carnival Island is full of shady shenanigans… but did you know that applies to the story’s end, too?

Beware: Spoilers ahead!

The original resolution from the island’s release in 2014 had Ringmaster Raven, who masterminded a plot to hypnotize the whole town to serve him, end up hypnotized by your character. You go so far as to make him believe that he is a chicken, giving the carnival a brand-new attraction: The Incredible Chicken Man. ๐Ÿ” He clucks, too!

However, some fans have sinceย expressed concernsย over this characterโ€™s treatment going from bullied Bird Boy to shamed Raven, still outcasted by the townsfolk whose welcome he chased unsuccessfully. HfEvra wrote in 2021 that the tragic tale “dehumanizes a man of color who was already treated as a literal monster by the narrative because of an aspect of himself that he had no control over,” elaborating further in a video.

Bird Boy was disliked seemingly because of his freakish features of looking not entirely human (which is why Dr. Dan is so afraid to have his monster identity discovered in the bonus quest), and also had a reputation as a “troublesome carnival freak.” He was blamed for arson at Honest Gabe’s, although we find out from the current business owner that Gabe was actually quite dishonest and even serving jail time for fraud. This calls into question whether Bird Boy really committed the crime or was set up, which is left open to interpretation. Either way, it’s wild that the town threw out an at-risk kid with no one to care for him.

Also, in 2017, @concanelaa tweeted that a line of dialogue from one of the Black townsfolk which originally talked about being nicer to people so they didnโ€™t try to “enslave us” appeared to sound as if Black people were “blaming themselves for being enslaved.” The call-out led to Poptropica modifying that line to say “take revenge” instead.

The various concerns led to theย Pop Creators auditing the island and hinting at a twist to come for the island’s re-release on Steam.

Sure enough, in 2022, Steam brought along a new ending to this carnival caper. Instead of brainwashing Ringmaster Raven into acting like a chicken, you force him to be your friend. The next day, you’ll still find Raven caged, but instead of becoming a laughingstock, he’s being shipped off to Super Villain Island, presumably to be jailed there. As the trucks roll out, you’ll be left saying to no one, “But he’s my…”

As for the townsfolk, they’re now more remorseful of the way Bird Boy was driven out of town all those years ago, with new dialogue about how they should have “been better” replacing the lines about being nice just so people won’t “take revenge” (formerly “enslave us”) or “because it’s the right thing to do, I guess.” Subtle yet significant shifts!

But is the story satisfying? Before the Steam ending was released, the PHB reached out to former Pop Creator Mitch Krpata (who worked on the island in 2014, but not the rewrite in 2022) for an interview. Asked “Why such a tragic ending for Raven and the people?” he responded:

Monster Carnival was a hard one to write. There was a lot of pressure to come up with something spectacular, and while thereโ€™s a lot about it that I like, I donโ€™t think the script ultimately ended up where I would have wanted it. I will say that the idea behind Ringmaster Ravenโ€™s comeuppance was to thwart the expectation of what usually happens in kidsโ€™ stories. It always turns out that the villain was just misunderstood, or lonely, and everyone agrees to let bygones be bygones and now theyโ€™re all friends. I kind of wanted to turn that on its head and say, no, this guy is actually pure evil and thereโ€™s no putting the toothpaste back in the tube.

Mitch Krpata in a 2022 interview with the PHB

Fans have had mixed feelings about the Monster Carnival ending, sometimes saying that Ringmaster Raven deserved better, which begs the question: What does “justice” look like for Ringmaster Raven?

Does it mean he never should have been caged at all? Never hypnotized, whether to be your friend or a chicken? Never exiled, blamed for arson, orphaned, or born with a deformity that others were afraid of?

And yet, these are all part of his story. Whether he is truly “pure evil” as Mitch suggested, or his circumstances led him down this path, he did try to hypnotize people into slavery, and two wrongs don’t make a right. Raven’s life was troubled from the start, but there’d be no story without these conflicts, even the injustices he suffered.

Now that you know the tale behind the Monster Carnival rewritten ending, what do you think of the way Ringmaster Raven is treated? ๐Ÿฆ We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Hook: Survival Ep. 2, Sinker: For Members ๐ŸŽฃ

Yay to you for surviving another week in this weird world! ๐Ÿฆซ

Pop drop: after an earlier teaser, Poptropica has re-released another episode for the map. Survival Island, Ep. 2: Hook, Line, and Sinker is back in business for desktop and mobile โ€” but only for members.

Episode 1 of Survival is currently free for all, but beyond the newly re-released follow-up, the rest of the story is still stuck in limbo. However, the full island (with all 5 episodes) is expected to be included in the Steam bundle releasing next week, so stay tuned for that!

In other news, guest writer Young Rider on the Pop Creators’ Blog has been speculating that Sir Howard Diggory from the new Jade Scarab Island might be a reincarnation of construction leader Burt Diamond from the missing classic Twisted Thicket. ๐ŸŒณ Between their pale English looks and nefarious tendencies, they sure share some similarities. What do you think? (We think we want Twisted Thicket back!)

Basking with Bastet ๐Ÿฑ and Islands in Caskets

Heyo Poptropicans, dig in for member gifts, a reaction to Jade Scarab from its designer, and more!

Knightly gear is in this season at Adventure Outfitters! Fill up on medieval fantasies with classic costumes like the Heart Astro Knight as well as more recent returns like the Baby Dragon Plushie for your clubhouse. (If only Amelia sold tickets to lost islands, though…)

The trend goes up a notch with May’s member gifts! Members this month will find in their inventories a Cute Baby Dragon Follower, Dragon Sword,ย andย Master of All Dragons costume. ๐Ÿ‰

Soon after Jade Scarab Island came out last week, Girl Power (Pop username: GwenBrightly), the island’s designer who won the Dream Island contest to have her idea made, shared an appreciation post on her Tumblr blog composed of pictures of the legendary cat/goddess, Bastet.

She also included the hashtags #My baby and #they did her so well, so it’s safe to say she quite enjoyed playing with this Poptropicat! ๐Ÿฑ

Interested in more opinions about the latest island? Check out the PHB’s Review for Jade Scarab Island in the post below! ๐Ÿชฒ

Meanwhile on Twitter, Poptropica continues the odd memes with a clip of a flailing mannequin. (Spoiler alert: It’s not actually Cryptids Island.)

Still, could the mention of this old island be a hint for its return, or are the Creators just nostalgia-baiting once again?

Rounding off, here are the latest fan art features from Pop’s Instagram stories, sparked by imaginations of older islands…

Keep on poppin’ on!

PHB Review: Jade Scarab Island ๐Ÿชฒ

Curbed by the curse? Check out our Jade Scarab Island Guide.

You you you! Yes you, adventurer! Have you played Jade Scarab Island yet? The PHB team has had some time to dig in and digest, and now we’re here to share our thoughts with you about this final Dream Island, which released in late April. Beware: spoilers lie ahead!

Storyline & Characters

Soon after Jade Scarab Island was announced as a winner of the Dream Island contest last year, the PHB shared an inside look from Girl Power, the Poptropican who designed the island. Looking back at her original ideas, it’s interesting to compare them to the real thing.

Girl Power’s submission contains extra details not found in the game, particularly in regard to names. This includes: Claira the curator, King Khnurnโ€™s tomb (“reborn sun” in Egyptian), and the village of Iteru (“river” in Egyptian) โ€” in Poptropica, they were all nameless.

However, the game is faithful to some of her other ideas, like the merchant and Howard Diggory. Other ideas are modified โ€” instead of errands of fishing and translating, we’re boosting a camel business and locating a missing excavator. We’re not opposed to the Pop Creators taking creative liberties, but for an island that felt a bit short in playtime, it could have benefitted from more fleshing out of details.

Still, there were lots of fun characters and dialogue. We especially loved the player’s self-aware blimp remark, the busy businessman who rejects your flirting, and of course, the adorable little cat (although that goddess transformation came out of nowhere and left too soon!). ๐Ÿฑ

The reveal and defeat of the villain, the digsite foreman, felt abrupt and anticlimactic. He’s surly throughout the island, so it’s not much of a surprise when he swoops in to attack. However, his identity (though not expression) was part of Girl Power’s plan โ€” she had named the foreman Awantagi (“deceitful person” in Egyptian). We don’t get much time to face him, either: a quick cutscene and it’s all over. Overall, the story is intriguing, but we just wish we could engage with it longer.

Gameplay

At times, the game can run rather slowly, and some players have reported getting locked in scenes. Hopefully the Creators can iron out these glitches soon, but in the meantime if you find yourself stuck somehow, you can restart the island from the map.

When things work, though, exploring Jade Scarab does feel like a classic OG island, with less hand-holding than most of the other new islands. Scanning the desert by flying with the falcon definitely gave us nostalgic vibes for similar mechanics on old islands like Wild West and Cryptids! ๐Ÿฆ…

Perhaps the most challenging part of Jade Scarab is the merkhet puzzle. Even with the instructions and animated demonstration, players have been confused about the task at hand. (Our guide can help!) Its uniqueness makes this part interesting, but it also leaves us without much frame of reference for what we’re supposed to do.

Still, other parts struck a decent balance between fun and frustrating. Whether we were making charcoal rubbings or chasing a cat, it was exciting to make discoveries, and rewarding to figure things out.

Audio & Visuals

We love the looks and listens for Jade Scarab, but at the same time, they don’t feel new. Many of the soundtracks are from Arabian Nights Island, including this “Genie Dance” tune. (Hear more on our Pop Music page!)

The desert marketplace and tomb setting feels similar to Arabian Nights, while the ancient Egyptian aesthetics were also a feature of Nabooti Island. Technically, Jade Scarab is a new story with new art, but it doesn’t really break barriers in the Poptropica canon. ๐Ÿšœ

That being said, there are still many cool details to enjoy, like the mix of ancient and modern culture (including traffic honks!), hijab-wearing bystanders, and even Rumpelstiltskin on a ring float.

Verdict

With its fun but short storyline, classic island vibes, and neat but derivative stylings, Jade Scarab Island feels like a good-but-not-great addition to the map. Out of five we’d give this Egyptian expedition…

3.5 out of 5 Bastet idols. Though this excavation vacation comes with its share of enjoyable discoveries, it ultimately comes up short in its potential to dig deeper. Let’s hope Poptropica breaks that curse soon!

Thereโ€™s so much more to unpack โ€” head over to the trivia section of our Jade Scarab Island Guide to see what other details you may have missed!

With that, all three Dream Islands from the 2020 contest are done and dusted! Which one was your fave: Fairytale, Goofball, or Jade Scarab? ๐Ÿ Next up, we’re looking forward to the return of some old islands to Steamโ€”and maybe bigger adventures on Poptropica, too? ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Top 5 Picks

Zomberry Rocks by Lucky Joker

Kicking things off with quite the creative entry! I love the unique medium of painting on a rock, reminiscent of painting eggs around Easter. It would be super fun to hide these around your yard! Plus, that clean line work and coloring is impeccable. Find his Instagram here.

Zomberry Comic by Tough Spinner

If any of you were able to play the Zomberry game in Roblox, this scene may look a bit familiar to you. I love how ambitious the comic is and how dynamic each panel is! Pairing sequential images with text can be quite the challenge, and this storyline reads very clearly. The action, emotion, and humor are all well captured! Find the artist in the comments and on Discord.

Joe Puddy A3 by OnyxOnline

Based on an expression sheet, this piece was made by taking a fan-suggested character and drawing them in predetermined poses on a grid. And I’ve got to say, Joe Puddy looks super intense with ol’ expression A3. About to go bananas blueberries, it looks like… ๐Ÿ‘€ Love the idea and the execution! Find their Tumblr here.

Joe was Always here by Thehypercutter

Another Joe Puddy feature! This one features the Poptropican post-epidemic, but still with splotched blueberry scars from the outbreak. Kinda gives him a lot of unique character! Very creative take. Find her Twitter here.

Zomberry Island Fan Art by Maddie

Last but certainly not least, we have this frightfully fruity painting. I love the traditional use of medium, as well as the application of color. Those purples look so cool! Definitely makes me nostalgic for Zomberry Island. And maybe a bit hungry for blueberries too? No? Just me? Anyway, fantastic work! Find her Instagram here.
