The ABCs of LGBT with the PHB 🏳️‍🌈

Our header features artwork from Criaha.

Happy Pride Month, Poptropicans! 🏳️‍🌈

June is a month of celebration for the LGBTQ+ community, and the PHB is bringing that celebration to Poptropica. But we recognize that not everyone is familiar with what this is all about, so we wanted to make this post to explain the ABCs of LGBT in a kid-friendly way (with brief mentions of mature forms of attraction).

This post will be using the terms “LGBTQ+,” “LGBT,” and “queer” interchangeably, though it’s worth noting that “queer” has historically been used as an insult and only recently been reclaimed as a positive catch-all term. We’ll be going over some basic concepts and common LGBT identities — and tying them to the world of Poptropica!

Please remember that everyone is different, and identities are complicated, but we are all deserving of acceptance, love, and support. If you feel uneasy about the topic of LGBTQ+ identities, I encourage you to be open-minded and patient. Though you may not currently understand the perspective of a queer individual, they are important people nonetheless. And if you are LGBTQ+ and feeling misunderstood by people who don’t quite get it, I encourage you to demonstrate patience even when it is challenging, because the PHB aims to be an accepting place for all viewers. All that being said, let’s unpack this!

Community Creations: May 2021

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the May recap for Community Creations! May’s theme was Robots (and the featured work is not in any particular order). Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

RoBard by AJ Box

This fresh take on our beloved boy Binary Bard is certainly a unique one. The robotic elements incorporated with the space elements make for a really interesting design! And yet the patterns in the torso and legs still clearly demonstrate this character’s identity. I especially appreciate the inclusion of the different planets around his head. Overall, this is an excellently executed and creative submission that fully embraces the robot theme! Find their Instagram here.

Vanquish E.Vile by Fierce Flyer

Of course, we can’t talk about robots in Poptropica without bringing up E.Vile from Legendary Swords, right? I love the smooth coloring and composition of this work, as well as the backlit lighting. It contrasts this dramatic setting with the cool, calm, and collected look on Fierce Flyer’s face! There is also a wonderful contrast between striking red of the robot against the cool blues of the sky and FF’s outfit. There’s even a blimp in the background! Find him here on the PHB and on the PHC Discord.

Friday Night Domination by AdventurersNHunters

Any Friday Night Funkin’ fans in the comment section? If so, you’re gonna love this submission. In this round, Holmes challenges Dr. Holmes Langley, but he’s not the only robot to be seen in this composition. From Sprocket, to Quippy, to Merlin, and other Game Show characters, this scene is full of metallic miscreants and silver sidekicks. Way to knock this theme out of the park! Find her DeviantArt here and her Instagram here.

Quippy by BrittScarlet

Quippy looks so cute here! Though this may be a relatively simple design, I can’t get over just how adorable our little robotic friend appears. Just look at that happy face! That, paired with the smooth coloring and nicely placed shine details, pulls it all together. Anyone else kinda wanna see more Quippy fan art now? Find her Instagram here.

Legendary Sword Fight by Invisible Ring

Right away, this video submission stands out. Not only is it a super creative format but you can also easily see how much effort went into its production. From handmade costumes and props to the prepared scripts and acting, you have to admire the work put in here! It was made during the Dimension Bros Poptropica Month event and certainly stands up today. What an epic Legendary Swords battle! Find her YouTube channel here.

Honorable Mentions

Excellent submissions all around this month! It’s almost like you all were programmed for artistic genius. And as a proud member of the Nanobots tribe, I have to say that this theme was super fun.

June: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is June’s theme? June’s theme is…

LGBTQ+!

June is Pride Month, which makes this the perfect time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ members of our community as well as themes in Poptropica! In past years, we’ve celebrated with Monochromatic and Pride art themes, and the PHB has even hosted Pride parties. This year, we’re also honoring the occasion with a Pride design on the PHB!

Pride is something that we constantly have to work towards and embrace, so why not celebrate it yet again? The PHB hopes that everyone can feel welcome in our community, even if that takes a bit of patience and understanding.

Though Poptropica hasn’t been known to include openly queer characters in their islands, fans do not shy away from their own headcanons, theories, and original characters. So whether you are in the LGBTQ+ community or simply an ally, anyone can still participate this month! Perhaps HfEvra’s guest post on minority representation in Poptropica could help inspire you. And on that note, I hope you guys can remain positive and be proud of what you create this month!

  • Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to both the theme and Poptropica.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as you’d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, I’m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so don’t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Pop Petition: Let’s talk about minority representation in Poptropica

Hey Poptropicans, this is a guest post by HfEvra (Mess of a Being)Enjoy!

Greetings, fellow humanoid creatures with unrealistic proportions who lack ears and noses! This is HfEvra or Mess of a Being, and I’m here today with another guest post, this time about minority representation in Poptropica — particularly on ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.

As a Middle Eastern non-binary lesbian, seeing minority representation in current children’s media brings me immense joy and makes me hopeful that the kids of today will grow up to be tolerant, well-adjusted adults. But recently, I found myself thinking: What if Poptropica also had this sort of representation? And that’s what I’m here to talk about today.

Representation in Poptropica so far

Before talking about how more diversity can be implemented into the game, I wanna go over some instances of Poptropica’s existing attempts at diversity and inclusivity — both the successes and the failures.

The first thing that comes to my mind is the removal of the gender selector from the account creation screen, clearly meant to make the game inclusive for LGBT people who don’t fall into the gender binary of male or female.

Poptropica used to ask if you were a boy or girl when creating a new account.

Instead of a player’s choice of gender affecting whether or not their Poptropican has eyelashes, the player simply gets to choose whether or not they want eyelashes without having to go into the nitty-gritty of gender identity. In addition, it was also made so that both masculine and feminine clothing could be seen at the same time in the (now removed) New You building on Home Island.

In terms of representing persons of color (POC), however, Poptropica is a mixed bag. On one hand, we have C.J., the brilliant young girl scientist from Shrink Ray Island as well as Dr. Rachel Salerno, the courageous astronaut woman from Lunar Colony Island. On the other hand, we have Ringmaster Raven, the horribly mistreated and tragic villain from Monster Carnival Island. (Yes, it does seem that I am incapable of making anything that doesn’t end up referencing him.)

Top: Dr. Salerno, one of the best depictions of a person of color in Poptropica. Below: Ringmaster Raven, one of the game’s worst representations of POC.

There is also the fact that Poptropica is guilty of whitewashing — the act of taking a character who isn’t white (or white-coded) and altering them to be white, or at the least, white-passing. Crusher from Super Power Island and DJ Saturday Nite from Zomberry Island, who were both dark-skinned when they were first introduced, had their skin tones lightened in subsequent appearances in the game years later — quite a problematic move considering that people of color are already lacking representation as is. Here’s the before-and-after of the DJ:

And as for Crusher…

That being said, there are ways that Poptropica could add diversity to the game and make things more inclusive without falling into problematic implications. Let’s discuss a few of those ways, shall we?

What else can be done?

In the PHB’s Q&A with Poptropica’s CEO from last November, it was mentioned that Poptropica doesn’t currently have any characters whose sexual orientation or gender identity plays an important part in the story, but that it is something that should be considered for future islands. However, there is actually more that can be done in regards to representation than having islands revolve around the minority identities in question.

(Some players read Hazel and Beatrice from Crisis Caverns as a couple. Had it been confirmed in the island itself, this could’ve been an interesting representation of not only gay and/or biracial couples, but also older LGBT couples, who don’t get as much representation as younger ones.)

One of the more subtle ways to establish a character as LGBT is to integrate it into their appearance or environment. Maybe a character could have a pride flag color scheme, or wear something like a pin that has the pride colors on it! Maybe we enter a character’s house as part of the story and we find a pride flag tapestry on the wall! Maybe the character has framed pictures of them alongside their same-sex parents! There’s practically an infinite amount of ways to add LGBT content to Poptropica without being in-your-face about it.

Of course, that isn’t to say that all LGBT content has to be shunted out of the frame by being restricted to subtle design choices and/or background characters. One aspect of representation to remember is that a character’s minority trait shouldn’t be their entire personality, but if the LGBT characters in the game are restricted exclusively to background characters, that’s not fully representative either.

Luckily, Poptropica islands have more moving parts than just “player” and “background NPCs” — they also have a ton of secondary characters who play a part in the islands’ stories! In the future, there could be an island where a sidekick character is explicitly shown to be gay, trans, etc. Perhaps they have a romantic partner of the same gender who’s mentioned or seen alongside them during the story, or perhaps they’re a non-binary person who uses gender neutral pronouns! It’s not a hard thing to add to the story — simply referring to the character in question with non-binary pronouns like “they/them” or “xe/xem” (hey look, those are my pronouns as well!) would help normalize non-conventional pronouns to the game’s audience of kids.

Since the Poptropica Creators advertised 2021 as “the year of stories,” perhaps their current priorities are the Dream Island contest winners, so we likely won’t be seeing this sort of representation anytime soon. But hey, a gay can hope!

Top 5 Picks

Fruit Series Part 1: Orange by MissEligon

Kicking off our feature set with a bright orange color scheme! Though we usually think of pink when we picture the villainous Dr. Hare, I’m sure the color of carrots is close to his heart as well. But more on the theme of fruit here, this piece really pops! The angled limbs of the character paired with the geometric patterns of the background make for a sharp scene. I love the flat coloring and smooth line art. Really impressive composition! Find her DeviantArt here.

Yellow Star Music by AdventurersNHunters

What a fun yellow color scheme! The poses of these characters, along with their expressions, are very dynamic. That, along with the curved musical notes and bubbly background create a strong sense of movement in the scene. Just looking at it, I almost want to get up and dance! The connotation of the color certainly works well with the theme too! Find her DeviantArt here.

Blue Joe by thehypercutter

Blue seems like an perfect match to our friend Joe from Zomberry island, huh? Too perfect not to be paired! And after an experience like the blueberry zombie apocalypse, who can really blame Joe from still having worries? With the color scheme and character expression, this piece displays clear emotion. Makes me feel… blue? Excuse the pun, but great work! Find her DeviantArt here.

Chat on the Rooftop by BlazingAngel123

Ooooh, I am in love with this indigo color scheme! The blue/purple tones match the night sky very well, creating a deep and rich atmosphere. The expressions of the characters look effortless, bringing a sense of casual/natural emotion to the scene. The lineart is super smooth too. Well made! Find her DeviantArt here.

Monochromatic Moreau by Midnightoilstudios

Pink color schemes (and Moreau in particular) seem to be a fan favorite this month, but rightly so, looking at the wonderful submissions we received! The pink tones definitely match the character’s aesthetic, and the shading here is super soft. I love the eyes of this art style especially. Moreau is looking fantastic! Find her DeviantArt here.

Honorable Mentions

Hey, we almost made a full rainbow with the submissions this month! I loved seeing how creative you guys could get with color. And on that note, Happy Pride month to all! Though 2020 has been a crazy year, I hope everyone was able to enjoy pride. ❤

Classic Islands

With Flash Player coming to an end, the fate of Poptropica Islands is a bit uncertain these days. Will we ever get to see our favorite classics return to the map, or will we only be able to revisit them in our memories and through backdoor access? Are member the only few that will get to experience these adventures one last time as we transition to Haxe? Either way, perhaps now is a time to celebrate these islands yet again through our artwork and other creative pursuits!

So what islands are considered classics? Well, that’s pretty much any non-sound updated island (included 24 Carrot, despite its renovation). But the further back, the better! Early Poptropica, Time Tangled, Spy, Super Power, and other old-school experiences deserve the spotlight this month, so be sure to share your best work with us!

Having one giant adventure!

Top 5 Picks

Pride Month 2019 by ArtisticAsianBunny

ArtisticAsianBunny - Pride Month 2019

Wonderful, colorful submission! With each character representing a different hue of the rainbow, I love the attention to the color here. The motion of everyone appropriately mimics that of a march, adding great movement to the piece. Distinct personalities are shown with unique poses and accessories as well. Great character designs! Find her DeviantArt here.

Pride Month Day 4: Cuddly Owl by WitchyArtistGal

WitchyArtistGal - Pride Month Day 4 Cuddly Owl

So cute! All throughout June, this artist drew their OC’s in various pride fashion. Not only were the colors of the flags creatively incorporated to each outfit, but the numerous orientations featured shows great diversity. I particularly like this depiction of Cuddly Owl because of the blushing joy on her face! A simple but endearing series to say the least. Find her DeviantArt here.

Pride Batch by Criaha

Criaha - Pride Batch

Now talk about diversity! This month, Criaha took pride themed requests on their Tumblr, all of which are shown in the batch above (OC’s and headcannon characters alike). Like other submissions, the colors of numerous flags are well incorporated into fun outfits here. I find the variety particularly fantastic, with orientations, personalities, poses, etc. ranging greatly. The differences between the characters shows an excellent grasp on design and attention to detail. An amazing bunch of Poptropicans! Find her DeviantArt here.

Desiree by DJay-Rosi

DJay-Rosi - Desiree

Another sweet entry, huh? DJ started a pride series of their own this month, similarly featuring the orientations of many OC’s. Desiree here is quite the eye-catcher, with another expertly incorporated color scheme. The detailed outfit and bright pink lineart make the character really pop, and I love the sugary vibe. The swooping lines, shimmery look, and cute expression make this feel like a super energetic piece overall. A simple bust, but stunningly executed! Find their DeviantArt here.

Happy Anniversary MissE and Cri by NineTenOnetyOne

NineTenOnetyOne - Happy Anniversary MissE and Cri

Loving these wholesome drawings! Showcasing the adorable Popsonas of two popular artists in the community, this celebratory drawing is perfect for pride month. The gift is straightforward, but is far from straight but certainly encompasses the importance of spreading love in our community. I love the joy in the expressions and the closeness of the characters! Totally precious dude. Find her DeviantArt here.

Technology & Social Media!

With the appearance of Blue Tooth on the Creators’ Blog, more frequent Twitter updates/interactions, and a new island on the horizon, I think this theme is pretty appropriate for the times. There’s no denying social media’s prevalence in our lives, and the dangers that it includes, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate its benefits! Technology is rapidly advancing and culture is constantly evolving, so of course Poptropica has been trying to keep up. But what that future may look like is up for debate?

No matter how Poptropica, or its Worlds counterpart evolves, social media and technology will always be a crucial part of the fandom experience. Soooo, bring it on!
