How to Survive Off Path in the Dark Woods of Fairytale Island by Dizzy Feather (Little Pear)

To kick things off, we have a super unique submission! It presents a mixture of art and literature, which really brings the handbook-style short story to life. There is a lot of creative lore included that shows great attention to detail and imagination, expanding on what Fairytale Island (not Survival Island, but still clearly survival themed!) already gives us. Love the layout! Find her in the comments and on the PHC Discord.

Survival by Megan123456

Taking a step away from sepia, this submission has such beautiful, bright colors! It makes for quite the eye-catching scene and creates wonderful atmosphere in the environment. This is especially reinforced with the snow and flame texture. The effect also interestingly contrasts the freezing cold of the forest with the intense warmth of the fire, which is definitely reminiscent of Survival Island. Find her in the comments and on the PHC Discord.

Survivor Island – The Greatest Game by krazytalez

Here we have another bit of sequential work, this one featuring Silly Chicken’s time on Survival Island. An adventure—with both the excitement and the fear—I’m sure all of our Poptropicans remember! I enjoy seeing these little snapshots into different parts of the episodic quest in this format. The night vision adds an especially cool effect! Find their Instagram here, where you can find more from this comic series.

Survival Island by Doubletheblame

Another great snapshot of Survival Island, this design really captures that feeling of uncertainty when experiencing the story. There is a simultaneous atmosphere of total isolation and constant sense of being watched. It’s especially intriguing to see Myron’s point of view in this side-by-side! The layout of the camera and the reverse shot of the villain comes across as quite cinematic. Find her DeviantArt here.

Myron Animation by tillymeowjings-arsb

Though sans-mustache, this reanimation of an earlier post shows great personality—and amazing artistic growth! Lip-syncing is a challenging skill to master on top of drawing in general. And this short little video came out so smooth! I really enjoy the style of the character and the adorable facial expressions, all paired so some fantastic audio. Find her Tumblr here.

Looks like we not only survived this month but thrived this month, guys. 💪 These creations were to die for, as always!

October: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is October’s theme? October’s theme is…

💙💎😢 Feeling Blue! 😢💎💙

According to the Pop Creators, Poptropica isn’t just blue… it’s cerulean. But hey, there are plenty of cool shades of blue out there, so why stick to just the one? Still, I hope all the other colors aren’t green with envy.

For this set of creations, anything blue goes. That means the color and the feeling! If you draw me a picture, I wanna see everything from cobalt to navy, to sky and baby! If you write me a short story, I better feel all the feels and start tearing up by the end.

Though I exaggerate a bit, you get the idea. Think about all your favorite Poptropicans with blue outfits, or all your favorite blue background art. Think about the saddest moments from each island, and all that blue ocean our characters have to traverse. And be sure to keep an eye out for our annual Halloween Costume Contest this month as well!

  • Submit: Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitterTumblr, or Discord.
  • Results: Next month, I will feature 5 submissions that stood out to me the most as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Just make sure you relate to both the theme and Poptropica (and nothing NSFW or otherwise inappropriate).
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as you’d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, I’m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so don’t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Pop Culture: OTP in 80s Fashion by BunniesNBowties

Okay… so someone needs to tell me where to get that jacket and that button-up IRL, because I’m living for these looks. Starting as a request on Tumblr, the way that this design evolved into a magazine cover is awesome. The poses certainly match the tabloid composition, and all the text adds so much flavor to the image. The fits are iconic, and I’m loving how they still match each other while each having their own colorful patterned items. Find their Tumblrs here and here.

Walking in the 80s by XMzhier

Speaking of colorful, I’m really impressed with the use of colors in this image! It’s quite the challenge to use such bright, harsh tones without coming across as too bright, but there’s a perfect balance of subdued hues here to keep things looking nice. The side profile walking composition is super fun, and I love seeing all the little 80s refences in the background text. Though you will not be forgiven for Rick Rolling me… Anyone else get the urge to just listen to lofi beats and chill? Stunning work on the outfit designs and entire layout! Find their Twitter here.

Party in the 80s by Dizzy Feather & Love Feather

This long horizontal composition is really unique, and uses an interesting way to present all the different outfits. I especially love the different poses of the Poptropicans, which elevate the image from a still display of clothes to a rather engaging scene. Plus, the diner setting, funky colors, and bold accessories certainly belong in the 80s. Wonderful idea to include so many looks! Find the artists in the comments and on Discord.

80s Island Idea by iHateFridays

80s Island (most likely a placeholder name) will basically just be a big homage to sci-fi movies that came out during the time, such as Star Wars, Back to the Future, etc.

The island would start off with the player landing near a disco. A time traveler would show up and start crying about how there’s going to be an alien invasion, however no one takes him seriously. The time traveler looks upset and the player feels sorry for him, telling him they believe him. The two of you then decide to work together to stop the alien invasion.

The two of you track down an alien in disguise (most likely in a minigame), which is at a VHS store. There is a mini boss battle with the alien, with some 80s music playing in the background. The battle involves the alien chucking different VHS tapes at you, which transport you to different locations depending on the tapes.

The next alien is at a roller skating place. The boss battle involves a skating-themed minigame where you have to avoid the roller-themed attacks the alien throws at you.

After that is back to the disco place at the start, where this time there are multiple aliens you have to hunt down. You and the time traveler guy do some detective work, which would involve some problem-solving minigames. You manage to interrogate one of the aliens, who escapes but you steal its weapon.

You have to do some more problem solving to find the rest of the aliens, as well as using your newly acquired weapon to take them out. At some point you brag about how the weapon made it a lot easier.

When it seems you’ve taken out all the aliens, it’s suddenly revealed that the time traveler was an alien all along!! A UFO lands on the island and aliens appear everywhere, and your weapon is also destroyed.

All hope seems lost, but the people of the island aren’t willing to give up yet and you all work together to fight the aliens. There’s a big massive boss fight with some of the lower minions, eventually leading to the time traveler himself. You also get an even cooler alien weapon. You trade some edgy dialogue and eventually your Poptropican wins, sending the aliens away for good.

Honestly, this island sounds like it would be super fun to play. The story allows for interesting characters, amazing design opportunities, and a captivating story that a lot of people may like. Maybe something the writer should keep in mind for any future Dream Island contests? It would also introduce some vintage settings and details to an ever younger and younger Poptropica audience. Find their Twitter here.

80s Poptropican by Super Jumper

Now, this color-popping outfit definitely gives me 80s vibes. With the cherry earrings, black pumps, and even root beer handheld item, this look would be really fun to see in store. I love the loud colors and the accessories would look great mixed and matched with tons of outfits! A wonderful submission for the monthly costume contest, for sure. Find the artist in the comment section.

With all these awesome submissions this month, it really felt like we traveled back in time a bit. It was a blast to see all these loud colors and fun references! Keep up that creativity next month.

🌲🐻 SURVIVAL! 🐻🌲

As back-to-school season enters full swing, sometimes in face of piles of homework and tests there’s only one thing you can try to do: survive. Not to mention how unbearably hot it still is outside for me. And, of course, there’s Survival Island in Poptropica too, which includes Episode 2: Hook, Line, and Sinker for members only.

I’d like to emphasize Survival Island in this month’s theme not only for those reasons but also because it can sometimes feel like Poptropica as a game is barely surviving as is. The fandom certainly keeps the dream alive, but with news like Poptropica Jr. it’s difficult to see the direction the original game is headed in.

But nonetheless, let’s keep surviving and thriving with this month’s set of creations! Anything related to Survival Island obviously goes, but so does anything that could relate to the general concept of “survival.” Maybe draw your favorite scene from the island, or create your best apocalypse survival outfit. Even write a story of your Poptropican surviving in the woods or try on your best Myron Van Buren cosplay for size. We can survive this month together!

Top 5 Picks

Dr. Hare & Binary Bard Cosplay by Sriyani (srvanv)

That’s it, no contest, these guys undoubtedly won Halloween last year. 🐰🤖🎃 You don’t often see Poptropica costumes IRL, but when you do, they are simply amazing! This iconic duo is easily recognizable and shows off so much personality. From the green glowstick bands on Dr. Hare’s belt to the metallic-grey socks of Binary Bard’s robot legs, there’s wonderful attention to detail and resourcefulness in this cosplay look. Check out more photos of the look here and find their Instagram here.

Dr. Hare & Black Widow Cosplay by Yamcha (gokuostrich)

Once again, these IRL costumes have blown me away. And TikTok has been a great platform lately for showing off that Poptropica cosplay. Makes me want to attend a real-life PoptropiCon and dress up as my Popsona. These looks are instantly recognizable and just seem so fun to wear. But honestly, it’s that little Dr. Hare plush and carrot that really sets this look out from the rest. Don’t talk to me or my son ever again. Find the original videos here and here, and find more on their TikTok here (note that some content may be for ages 13+).

Subnautica Sea Monkey by HeartOfEnder

I particularly like this submission because of its unique approach to the theme. For any Subnautica: Below Zero fans, you may recognize this sea monkey that has a Poptropica-style twist. The translation of the sea creature into a Poptropican is super interesting, and I love to see the comparisons between this design and the original. The color scheme is especially nice! It would make a great in-game costume. Find the artist commonly on Discord.

Rumpel Revolution by sleepybiker

With recent Rumpelstiltskin-ified items available in the Baron’s Cabinet of Curiosities, including a certain altered Dr. Hare costume, seeing Rumpelstiltskin in other iconic Poptropican outfits is rather appropriate, don’t you think? I like to think that he’s getting into the Community Creations spirit and really participating in this month’s theme of cosplay, if but in his own mischievous way. 😜 Plus, he just looks so darn cute! Find their DeviantArt here.

Ringmaster Raven Cosplay by Toma (toma.ki)

Again, here we see Poptropica cosplaying really taking off on TikTok! Ringmaster Raven is a fan favorite character (who deserved better, of course) and so it’s super cool to see him come to life like this. A funny use of audio to match the look, and very theatrical! The eyes on the hat to match Raven’s in-game hat really tie the whole look together. Find more on their TikTok here (note that some content may be 13+).

As always, you guys crushed it with your creativity. My expectations for Poptropica cosplay are now super high. And what great timing with San Diego Comic Con happening just recently!

🎉💿📼 ‘80s! 📼💿🎉

Maybe it’s been the lack of classic islands or maybe my binging of Stranger Things or our recent celebration of the Poppies, but with summer ending soon I’ve been feeling a whole lot of nostalgia lately. So as we move towards the future, why not celebrate the past a bit too?

Now, I know Poptropica’s demographic is more ’90s and early 2000s kids, but I thought it would be fun to turn back the clock just a little bit more with our next theme. The ’80s was an era of bright neon colors and bold styles to say the least, which could be quite fun to incorporate more into Poptropica. And some of its trends have made a return! I’m talking mullets, VHS-style video, vaporwave aesthetics, you name it.

Influence from the ’80s can even be seen in Poptropica. Maybe draw DJ Saturday Nite in a ton of neon colors? Or reimagine the Night Watch mall as if it were in the 1980s. Make your best ‘80s inspired costume or even write about an island set in the ’80s. Check out LJ’s Poptropica fashion through the decades for some more inspiration.

Community Creations, Monster Carnival Island

Community Creations: June 2022

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the June recap for Community Creations. June’s theme was Carnival, so be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Carnival by XMzhier

Right away, this submission caught my eye with its creative, dynamic perspective. Having the viewer positioned in the game booth makes for a really interesting use of depth and drama! The eye contact with Black Widow and sense of danger with her soon-to-be-thrown dart provides some captivating intensity. Not to mention how I love seeing all these different characters visiting another island, and with such cool outfit designs! Amazing work! Find their Twitter here.

Monster Carnival Poster Redraw by TillyMeowJings

Of course, no “carnival” theme would be complete without some good ol’ Ringmaster Raven features. This design is a recreation of his poster seen on the island, which is really neat to see done in a different style. It retains that sense of vintage, worn paper while incorporating a more digital-feel in its linework. I also love seeing the slight alternate design choices of Raven’s outfit and other small details! Find her Tumblr here.

Goofy Ringmaster & Wicked Ringmaster by Magic Poptropican

Between these two costumes, I love to see their differences and similarities in how they relate to our carnival theme. Both mimic the theatrical aesthetic of Ringmaster Raven, with elements like the top hats, capes, and staffs, but have their own twists too. The goofy version is especially fun to see since it clearly incorporates themes from the recent Goofball Island! I also appreciate the attention to detail in the pet that accompanies this character, and how it changes accessories as well. Find the artist commonly in the comment section.

Monster Mya and Oliver by sleepybiker

Now this was quite the unexpected submission! The “Monster” aspect of Monster Carnival is obviously a huge part of the island’s story, but it’s especially interesting to think about what the monster versions of other characters may look like as well. The drawing was based on a fan-fiction that the artist wrote, making for some wonderfully fun designs. Find their DeviantArt here.

The Bird Boy by Dangerous Dragon

It was another dark moonless gloomy night in one of Poptropica’s unknown island, usually people would be scared but today they had a smile on their face! It was the day before Halloween! This time there was a carnival too! There was even a costume contest. People tried on many costumes and stores sold out in minutes! People were really excited as there was a chance to meet the famous monster Bird-Boy aka Ringmaster Raven! Now there was this boy Edgar who seemed the most different from all. He was the only Poptropican who couldn’t understand what the big deal was. “What’s so special about that magician?” asked Edgar. His grandfather told him all about the history of Ringmaster Raven. “They say that he is a monster! A long time ago in another one of poptropica’s island people used to hate him when he first appeared. Then Ringmaster Raven seeked revenge but was stopped. A hero named Dangerous Dragon helped Ringmaster Raven to fight for his justice without harming people. People soon realized that they were wrong. They agreed on equality. Now Ringmaster Raven is famous and even Dangerous Dragon too! Too bad this happened long ago. The island has already sunk.” Said his grandfather. Edgar was fascinated by all of this. He wanted to meet Raven!

The next day on Halloween Edgar set out to the contest wearing a costume that was most splendid. He was dressed up as Dangerous Dragon! When he reached the carnival it was filled with stalls of games, food and much more! There was even a Pumpkin decoration contest but Edgar had come to participate in the costume contest. There was a stage and everyone had to come up and show their costumes. When Edgar came up and Ringmaster Raven looked at him, he cried of joy! It reminded him of his friend who fought for his justice! After other people had finished, it was time for the result declaration. Everyone was excited to see who won. Ringmaster Raven walked to the stage and announced the winner. Edgar won! Ringmaster Raven came up to him and asked him to be his assistant. Edgar accepted and so now he helps Raven all around the world in his shows!

Though this is a simple narrative, details are rather apropos for the controversy surrounding Monster Carnival Island. The short story takes place in an alternate universe where Ringmaster Raven is accepted instead of ostracized and unfairly punished like in the island’s original ending. The ending was later rewritten, but still results in an imprisoned Ringmaster Raven. Dangerous Dragon gives us a glimpse into what Raven’s life could have looked like instead, which opens the door to a world of alternate possibilities. What do you think such a world would look like? Find the artist in the comments section.

🎉👯‍♀️ COSPLAY! 👯‍♀️🎉

PoptropiCon Episode 2: Spoiler Alert was recently re-released for all players, which got me thinking about all the amazing costumes and fun references throughout the island. Conventions IRL have slowed down quite a bit these last few years due to the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the same way online!

Cosplay is such a fundamental part of conventions, both IRL and in the world of Poptropica. I mean, who doesn’t love the chance to don a killer costume based on your favorite character? This month, we’ll extend that practice to Poptropica!

Of course, you can make a Poptropica costume based on your favorite TV show character, for example. But you could also draw other characters in the style of Poptropica, or write a fan-fiction all about dressing up at PoptropiCon. Maybe draw some of your favorite scenes from PoptropiCon featuring the coolest costumes, or even make your own IRL costume based on a Poptropican!

You can also check out our characters from pop culture in the PHB’s costume lookbook for inspiration on how to get started!

Top 5 Picks

Jade Scarab Kitty by queen-sophie

If you weren’t prepared to see a bunch of paws-itively purr-fect cat art this month… well this is your first and final warning. With a theme like Jade Scarab, it should be no surprise who the star of this month is! In this design, I love the subtle glow effects and the shine in the cat’s eyes and collar, seemingly hinting at the true secrets that this fearsome feline holds. Find her Tumblr here.

Uhhhh meow? by distorted-graffiti

Coincidentally, I’m currently working on a screencap redraw challenge of my own in my current art class, so this submission just happened to catch my eye! A wonderfully humorous scene from Jade Scarab Island, this redraw successfully captures the mood of the moment. Not to mention how cool it is to see the exact scene from in-game in someone else’s style! Find their Tumblr here.

Cat Key by TillyMeowJings

What did I say about cats this month, eh? I love this unique take on the “Jade Scarab kitty” and the idea of feline idols in general. Lots of thought was put into this design, and the display of information is quite clear and, well, informative. Very creative! Find their Tumblr here.

Egyptian Excavator by Magic Poptropican

Here we have a Jade Scarab inspired costume, which I love to see for some variety in the midst of all these illustrations! Jade Scarab is in fact not the only island in which Poptropicans can visit Egypt, nor the only island including some excavation, so I love this sort of mix-and-match of apt accessories. And a very colorful outfit at that! Find the artist in the comment section.

Kitty Goddess by sleepybiker

Lastly, of course, another awesome kitty feature. Who knew Bastet could be so powerful AND so adorable? We only see the goddess for a short moment in her true form, so it’s interesting to think about what she would be like when she’s not sneaking around in her more furry form. I love the humor in this portrayal of some very cat-like behavior. Quite the fursona, I must say. 👀😻 Find their DeviantArt here.

🎠🎈🤡 CARNIVAL! 🤡🎈🎠

With the recent release of Poptropica on Steam, one major change was not left unnoticed by fans: Monster Carnival’s re-release has an alternate ending. The island has had its fair share of controversy and concerns raised, so these changes are likely for the better.

Since all this news is on our minds, why not relate it to this month’s theme? Despite the controversies, Ringmaster Raven remains a fan-favorite character, after all. So this month, anything carnival related applies! That could mean anything related to Monster Carnival Island for sure, but also extends to anything under the carnival umbrella like clowns, balloons, carousels, and more!

I also wanted to leave it a bit more open ended since this June is Pride Month, and so you could totally incorporate some sort of campy aspects of pride into the world of carnivals if you get creative enough.
