Popular Poptropicans

Popular Poptropican: Purple Paw

Howdy Poptropicans, it’s LJ back with another Popular Poptropican! Today I’ll be talking to Purple Paw as part of our PHB staff lineup of interviews. (Check out Spotted Dragon and Gentle Dolphin‘s interviews, as well as mine, if you haven’t already!) She was one of the founders of Ramble Reviews, does a variety of other fun posts on the blog as well, and we’re happy she’s on the team. Now let’s get into it!

1. What do you enjoy about blogging with the PHB?

I enjoy having such a big audience in the Poptropica community to share news, theories, tips, facts, and my own creations with. Iโ€™ve learned much more than I expected since starting out. Plus, itโ€™s cool getting to connect with Poptropicans all over the world! Receiving the invitation to join this team was definitely the most excitement Iโ€™d had in awhile, and writing for the PHB has been an awesome experience thus far.

2. What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers or writers in general that you wish you had starting out?

A helpful tip I wish I’d used in my earlier posts is to start with the necessities. I would often jump right in and try to create a finished, revised version of a post right off the bat–but unfortunately, that’s not how it works with writing. If your first draft of writing doesn’t please you, don’t start over right away. Instead, finishing writing down your ideas and everything you’re planning to cover before you start adding special words, notes, images, etc.

There’s always time to go back and fix something after you’ve finished with the first draft, but it’s much harder to go back and fix an issue before you’ve finished laying down the necessities; otherwise, it’s likely you’ll get caught up in one part and forget everything else you were going to write. You gotta bake the cake before you add the frosting. ๐ŸŽ‚

3. What is your favorite island and villain?

My favorite islandโ€™s always hard to choose, as thereโ€™ve been a huge assortment of amazing ones over the years. But in the end, I would probably have to go with Red Dragon, because of all its beautiful scenery and the ninja gameplay โ€” and because of the nostalgia I get from a Magic Treehouse-based island. However, even though itโ€™s one of my top favorites, I donโ€™t believe itโ€™s the best island in general. That, in my opinion, would have to be Ghost Story. Ghost Story had an intricate and memorable story Iโ€™ll never forget; one of Poptropicaโ€™s true masterpieces.

As for my favorite villain, I definitely loved Daphne Dreadnaught โ€” I always thought she deserved more showtime than she got in the Ghost Story prequel, Spook Central. I also liked Mademoiselle Moreau, mainly since her motive behind her villainy is easy to understand.

4. What challenge in the game has been the hardest to complete in your opinion?

Probably one of the many gear-filled puzzles in Steamworks. Although I did quite like the island as a whole, the mini-games were definitely frustrating at times, the multiple steam terminals in particular. It also took me a very long time to complete Skullduggery (although I found it was easy to get into a rhythm after a little while of trying at it).

5. What is your favorite feature (still here or gone) from the many years of Poptropica?

Thatโ€™s another hard question. While the islands are certainly the real gems of the game, side ideas such as Tribes were also fun to engage with. I thought it was cool to have a feature where players can proudly wave their flags and compete in an Olympic Games-like event, and even access special common rooms just for them and their Tribemates! I hope the Creators incorporate Tribes again in the future. Go Nightcrawlers! ๐ŸŒ™

6. What is your favorite Poptropica item?

Out of all the amazing items you get to collect throughout the islands, I would have to say the Jetpack from Early Poptropica. It sure was fun to whiz across the city without touching the ground! The stopwatch from Super Villain was also an intriguing object…(I really canโ€™t choose just one of anything, can I?)

Out of the purchasable items in the Store, however, I always did love the many flavors of PopGum; I remember when I was younger I could never get enough of repeatedly hitting the space bar to watch bubbles float around the screen. Now that I think about it, I probably crashed the game once or twice doing that. ๐Ÿคญ

7. What is your favorite Poptropica Easter egg/secret/reference?

This one doesnโ€™t come directly from the game itself, but the binary code at the bottom of every Binary Bard post on the Creatorโ€™s Blog was one of my favorites. I unfortunately didnโ€™t engage much with the Creatorโ€™s Blog at the time they were posted, but more recently I revisited older posts and found the clever references to Bardโ€™s name. All those mysterious 0s and 1s…

Oh, and of course I canโ€™t leave without mentioning our true lord Beev! Pop simply wouldnโ€™t be the same without him.

Popular Poptropican: Gentle Dolphin

Howdy, Poptropicans! It’s LJ here with Gentle Dolphin in the third installment of our Popular Poptropicans โ€“ Poptropica Help Blog staff lineup. Gentle Dolphin joined the PHB a couple of years ago and has since stayed on top of reporting Poptropica news. In addition to that, you may recall her massive artistic involvement in our Flash Experience and “Smash! Crackle! Pop!” pranks. Let’s get to know her even further, shall we?

1. What do you enjoy about blogging with the PHB?

I like being able to work with other people who have similar interests, even if those interests are as niche as a 2007 computer game. Some of my favorite PHB memories involve partying in the PHC Discord server and creating wonderfully dumb April Fool’s pranks (the 2020 prank being my favorite).

2. What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers or writers in general that you wish you had starting out?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help or critique; it’s nice to have feedback before you publish your work. On the flip side, trust your instincts if you think something will enhance your writing.

3. What is your favorite island and villain?

Big Nate is my favorite island nostalgia-wise, Ghost Story is my favorite island story-wise, and Super Villain is my favorite island design-and-concept-wise. As for my favorite villains, it would be the Super Power Island crew. Although they aren’t the most complex villains, they are a fun collection of villains to take on. Also, BlazingAngel123‘s take on them made me love them more.

4. What challenge in the game has been the hardest to complete in your opinion?

For me, that challenge was the Thunder Volt arcade game from Wimpy Boardwalk‘s bonus quest. It’s the only bonus quest I haven’t completed. Sorry I couldn’t help you, Greg. ๐Ÿ˜ข

Thunder Volt

5. What is your favorite feature (still here or gone) from the many years of Poptropica?

I agree with many fans that the biggest lost feature is the multitude of islands. As Lone Axe said it best, the game feels gutted ever since the death of Flash. The Creators are hard at work converting everything to Haxe, but it’s going to be a while until we see everything come back.

6. What is your favorite Poptropica item?

That’s a hard question to answer since there are hundreds of items in the game! If I have to pick one, it would be the Forest Amulet from Twisted Thicket Island. It’s a lot of fun to transform and harness the powers of nature, even if you can only use the amulet on one island. ๐Ÿ˜…

7. What is your favorite Poptropica Easter egg/secret/reference?

I’m not sure if anyone else knows about this one. When you visit Mother Leeds’s house on Cryptids Island, the dishes on the table will shake when you get close to them. It certainly spooked me when I first noticed it. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Popular Poptropicans

Popular Poptropican: Spotted Dragon

Howdy Poptropicans, it’s LJ with the second installment of our Popular Poptropican staff writer lineup! Last time I was interviewed, but today we’ll be getting to know a bit more about Spotted Dragon โ€” longtime Poptropica blogger and host of the greatly admired Community Creations series.

1. What do you enjoy about blogging with the PHB?

Poptropica has been such a big part of my childhood, and so blogging with the PHB has really been a childhood dream come true. I remember being ecstatic when I got asked to join the team many years ago! It was a fantastic outlet for my passion for writing growing up, and I’m glad that my posts can still reach a wonderful audience. And through all the ups and downs of Poptropica, it has been a blast being a part of such a fun, creative community.

2. What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers or writers in general that you wish you had starting out?

Writing for a blog is definitely much different than writing a novel. In blogging, you really get the chance to connect more with your readers and have fun with your posts. So don’t be afraid to really let your personality shine through! And for improving your writing in general, reading is a big helper. Read lots of different things and you’ll naturally start to pick up on different writing styles and techniques.

3. What is your favorite island and villain?

Oh boy, I’ve never been great at answering this question. I have so many favorites! For top favorite… I think I’m between Cryptids Island and Counterfeit Island. Gosh, there are so many fun villains too. I do love Gretchen Grimlock and Black Widow from those aforementioned islands, but I’m also a sucker for Daphne Dreadnaught’s character design

4. What challenge in the game has been the hardest to complete in your opinion?

Growing up, I had a REALLY hard time with building up my boat in Skullduggery. I didn’t fully trust the loaning system, so it took me a really long time to get a strong enough ship to beat Captain Crawfish.

5. What is your favorite feature (still here or gone) from the many years of Poptropica?

Hmm, I really do love the art that goes into Poptropica, including the character design, so I might have to say that the Costumizer is my favorite feature. I have always loved making different costumes, and I especially loved when I got to save those costumes.

6. What is your favorite Poptropica item?

Back to my love for costumes, I gotta say that I love the Colorizer as well as the OG Costume Collector. I just love the versatility of customization in games! And some of my favorite costume items growing up were definitely the Vampire Girl outfits.

7. What is your favorite Poptropica Easter egg/secret/reference?

This is another tough question! I think the first easter eggs that really got me excited as a kid were the Hypnotic Costume and the Viking Suit. I felt really clever when I found those! But these days, one of my favorite easter eggs might be the PHB License Plate, because it really feels like a personal shoutout in some ways.

Popular Poptropicans

Popular Poptropican: Lucky Joker

Hey Poptropicans, we’re back with another Popular Poptropican!

Popular Poptropican is a series where we get to know members of the Poptropica fandom. We have a number of interviews lined up with staff writers of the PHB, and in this one, we’ll be talking with Lucky Joker!

Lucky Joker has been playing Poptropica since 2008 and joined the PHB team in 2016. Since then, he’s written over 200 posts for the PHB, including Poptropica specials like 100 Years of Fashion and fun games like Guess That Poptropican! Without further ado, hello LJ!

1. What do you enjoy about blogging with the PHB?

What I love most about blogging on the PHB is having the privilege to share my love for Poptropica with a wide audience of fans who are just as passionate about the game as I am. Sharing news, critiques, artwork, and having discussions with every one of our readers for nearly 5 years has been, and always will be, a highlight in my life. Also, parties! As a matter of fact, it was a party invitation that brought me into the community in the first place. I really enjoyed hosting the Tribal Tournament last year especially. That was a lot of fun! Basically what it comes down to is that I’m super grateful for the readers. None of this would be possible without them, so I appreciate them for keeping the blog alive.

2. What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers or writers in general that you wish you had starting out?

My advice to all the aspiring bloggers out there is to try to stay as active with posting as much as your personal life allows. Find time to frequently post and engage with your readers while granting yourself some breaks as to not overwhelm yourself with too many responsibilities. There have been times Iโ€™ve put too much pressure on myself which leaves me feeling like a failure when I donโ€™t meet my (sometimes strenuous) expectations. Just do the best you can, be authentic, and have fun!

3. What is your favorite island and villain?

My favorite island and villain don’t correlate, but they’re both very popular picks from what I’ve seen in the fandom. Mythology Island (the Flash version) has always been my favorite since its release back in 2010. It’s the first island I ever played with early access as a member and it eminently ignited my interest in Greek mythology. As for my favorite villain, Ringmaster Raven would be my choice for a couple of reasons. His backstory is pitiful and his ending is unjust which makes me root for him in a way I wouldn’t for any other villain. Plus, I think his design is one of the best of any Poptropica character in general.

4. What challenge in the game has been the hardest to complete in your opinion?

For all of you OG Poptropicans out there, you may remember a time when a simple effort like returning to your blimp after finishing an island was no walk in the park. Poptropica has made some tweaks over the years to make tasks like this more convenient, but one of the toughest challenges I remember having to pull off was getting Whiskers to her bowl of milk at the Funny Bunny Carrot Farm on 24 Carrot Island. Having to guide the darn cat around with your cursor was so time-consuming and stressful, to say the least.

5. What is your favorite feature (still here or gone) from the many years of Poptropica?

There are a plethora of great features that make this beloved game so special. For me, it has to be the multiverse feature that takes the cake though. Being able to meet with specific Poptropican friends to go head-to-head in games was a nice change from the single-player world that is Poptropica. It made partying a lot easier for the PHB, and you just don’t get the same feeling in the regular old common rooms. The creators should really consider bringing this feature back to the game as soon as possible โ€” perhaps after a few island releases โ€” as it’s one of the single most enjoyable facets of the game for many of us. (Honorable mention: the Photo Booth!)

6. What is your favorite Poptropica item?

Wow, favorite item! This one is tough to answer because of all the possibilities there are, but Iโ€™ll have to go with the swirly goggles from the Hypnotic outfit. I remember feeling like such a Poptropica master when I found the secret item hidden on Early Poptropica back in the day. Theyโ€™ve been a part of my signature look for quite a while now, and I only change out of them for special occasions like Halloween when I get into costume. I mean, really, who would LJ be without his goggles?

7. What is your favorite Poptropica Easter egg/secret/reference?

This may be a cop-out since it technically isnโ€™t one single answer, but I thought the meta-references on Mocktropica Island were pure gold. There were numerous callbacks and humorous self-deprecating jokes scattered throughout the island. Some of the more notable ones can all be seen in the Poptropica headquarters trash can alone. An Afro Guy figurine, a scrapped Monster Carnival file, and the concept of the iconic Dr. Beev are among the gags brought to us by this otherwise (in my opinion) forgettable island.

๐ŸŒŸ Popular Poptropican: Dangerous Dragon

Howdy Poptropicans, it’s LJ here with an exclusive interview with our newest Popular Poptropican!

Popular Poptropican (formerly known as Community Celebrities) is a series where we recognize members of the Poptropica online fandom for their exceptional involvement and participation in community events. (Check out some of our past interviews here.)

Now without further ado, allow me to introduce you to Dangerous Dragon, an active commenter who recently won my Pop The Difference contest and who has an impressive 5 guest posts on the PHB (from this year alone). Let’s get to know this rising star together.

Welcome, Dangerous Dragon! Tell everyone a little bit about yourself.

Hello! You might already know me, but I am Dangerous Dragon! I joined the community because I loved to search about Pop. One day on the homepage I saw “Blog” and it took me to the Creators’ Blog. Then I searched if there were more and that’s where I found the PHB.

What is your favorite island in Poptropica? How about your least favorite?

My favorite is Time Tangled. The story is exciting and fun. I love anything with Time! Also, it tells us about many events that took place in history. Bring the fact monsters back please!

For my least favorite, I will say Mocktropica because after whatโ€™s happened with Poptropica, the jokes aren’t even funny anymore. I literally played the island with my pet Leo. The pop coins or tokens also made it into the game as credits. I have no problem with it… it’s actually a fun island, but these two things are examples of jokes in the island not aging well.

With three winners of the Dream Island contest finally decided, which adventure are you most looking forward to?

To be honest, I’m excited for all of them. But if you want to know about the one that I’m excited about the most… it’s Secret of the Jade Scarab. I never got to play Nabooti, so this Island can hopefully give those similar vibes. The others sound fun too… Goofball and Fairy Tale!

What does your dream island look like?

Well, my dream island is Jedi Island. I actually already sent a post in for this but I don’t want to give spoilers, so maybe see for yourself when the post comes out!

Tell us what you enjoy about the Poptropica community.

I love the community as I love the competitions and friendly posts on the PHB!

What are your goals?

I would love to work for Poptropica as a blogger. My other goal is to become a writer or game designer. I guess I just love Poptropica!!! I would also love to become a staff writer on the PHB someday! Even if I don’t get to, though, I’ll still be guest posting.

Thank you, Dangerous Dragon, for taking part in this interview with me. I had a lot of fun, and I hope you did too. To any readers who want to know more details about DD’s discovery of Poptropica, check out their My Place in Poptropica story. I think you might enjoy it.
