Spring shopping and Pop blog hopping

Howdy, Poptropicans, it’s LJ with the an abundance of Poptropica news for you all today. Let’s pop into it!

First up, the store items have rotated, with a brand new Golden Warrior costume! The current inventory includes (items listed below; * = members only):

  • Costumes: Golden Warrior*, Prom Princess, Space Bounty Hunter, Slice of Pizza Tees, King & Queen Hoodies, Glam Gamer Girl*, Sweater Weather, Sunny Sport, Friendly Face Masks, Orange Julius*, Mardi Gras Jester, Rock Star 2*, Swan Ballerina, Angel, Robin Hood, and Pop Star
  • Followers: Red Dragon Follower*, Mood Clouds, Baby Alicorn Follower, Baby Penguin Follower, Dolphin Follower*, Deer Follower, Cupid Follower, Atlantis Drone, and Dryad
  • Powers: L.E.D. Me, Jetpack, Crushing Power*, X-Ray Visor*, Atom Power*, Cinnamon Fire Flavor Popgum, Torch, and Electrify
  • Pranks: Leprechaun Wand, Levitation Spell Book, Spitball Shooter, 8-Bit Birthday Pig Pixel Power, Inside-Out Power*, Zombify, and Silly Streams
  • Miscellaneous: Reversible Octopus, Heart Bubble Wand, White Combat Boots, Fox Mug, Unicorn Mug, Cat Mug, School Backpack, and Notebooks

There’s been a lot of cool and cute things lately in my opinion! I really like the Golden Warrior costume, Leprechaun Wand, Reversible Octopus, and Unicorn Mug. There’s a wide selection of stuff available to non-members again too, so that’s a plus. Only 1/5 of the items are members exclusive.

In other news, the enticing daily credit login rewards we became familiar with since they were introduced last year have seemingly vanished. The pop-up is nowhere to be seen and it’s currently unknown if the credits are still being added to our accounts every time we login. Perhaps it’s a glitch? Any information on this would be appreciated. As for now, we’ll miss you, daily rewards…

Also, the Creators’ Blog has undergone a few formatting changes! For one, the sidebar has a new widget with the latest news.

Furthermore, the “Love it/Like it/Not interested” voting buttons have been removed from the bottom of posts, which I think is a real shame considering it was a quick and easy way to leave feedback for the creators. Instead, all we have now is a dashed line.

The last of the noticeable updates is a refreshed commenting form. Take a look at everything for yourself in the screenshots below:

According to Invisible Ring, one of Poptropica’s guest bloggers and a PHC frequenter, Poptropica may be moving to a new blogging platform soon. Here’s what she shared with us on the PHC:

Poptropica emailed me last night and told me that since they are moving the blog to a new platform… blog business is a little quiet now, but they will have new posts coming soon.

Invisible Ring on the PHC

I guess we’re all in for a surprise as to what this means! We’ll be sure to keep you posted. Anyway, that’s all the news for now. Thank you for reading and I’ll to you guys in the next one. Pop on!

Island Flash-back: Monster Carnival ๐ŸŽก

Here we are Poptropicans, with the first Island Flash-back! And this time I didn’t stall on the post until the end of the month! But in all seriousness, this island was high on my list, and considering this is its release month, it’s the perfect time. I know I already spoiled it in the title, but I’m going to do a dramatic reveal anyway! February’s island is…

Monster Carnival!!

I would be lying if I didn’t say this island has a very complicated history. It was actually planned to be released alongside Poptropica’s very first islands, but was delayed for years. Even some Creators seemed to think it was never going to be completed, as evidenced by the description for this old concept art found in the Daily Pop archives.

Early concept art for Monster Carnival (and its ringmaster?)

“The Wayback Machine: An early sketch for a long-rumored, never-completed Island.” -The Daily Pop

Monster Carnival takes its inspiration from many sources, from the horror genre, to the at times creepy atmosphere of circuses, and even the poem “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe, referenced by both the main villain and the trainee Edgar. Possibly over time the island’s story and atmosphere became more complex due to new inspirations over what appears to be many re-writes.

A really good example of how “creepy” and “pretty” can be conveyed in the same image

Of course, no Monster Carnival discussion can be made without mentioning it’s villain: Ringmaster Raven. This character has stirred many responses from fans, due to his tragic backstory that held so much potential, and his unfortunate (and quite ungraceful) end. That all being said, he is still much-loved, and like many other villains is one of the main reasons this island is so remembered.

It’s just the story of a boy who lost his way, into shadows strayed–wait wrong “Nevermore”

Now here comes your part, fans! Monster Carnival and many of its peers were the first to go in the Flash-Haxe transition, and the months (or in this case, years!) of work artists and writers put into it should not go to waste! Make fanart, fanfiction, videos, guests posts, chicken memes and essays on why Ringmaster Raven deserved better. Let the Creators know what you appreciate about their past work to encourage them to preserve it!

Until next time!

Announcing Island Flash-backs (and honoring a special fan creation)!

Hello Poptropicans! With Adobe Flash having officially shut down, we have finally seen the loss of many beloved classic islands. However, there is hope with the Haxe conversion of these old favorites. Still, the Creators have A LOT to go through, so we thought weโ€™d do something special in the meantime to remember some of the best islands that were in the game. Announcing an upcoming PHB series: Island Flash-backs!

The goal of this is simple: Weโ€™ll dedicate each new month to celebrating a classic island from the Flash era, encouraging the Creators to bring them back through all of your fan creations and a special post here on the PHB.

Through this we hope to honor beloved, awesome islands, whether well-known or maybe less popular, showing our love and support for these stories to the Creators! While I have several islands planned for the upcoming months, if thereโ€™s significant demand for one I havenโ€™t listed, I will certainly consider it, so feel free to make suggestions!

I had Mocktropica planned for this month (January), but due to personal reasons I wasn’t able to fulfill that post on time. But I will be announcing February’s Island Flash-back soon, so stay tuned!

Before I leave, I would like to quickly direct you to one more thing: a fan project that deserves WAY more recognition: The Poptropica Dating Sim! Itโ€™s created by Jia/Magniventris from the PHC, our Discord server, and will continue to be updated.

Including music (lovingly) ripped off from Jeff Heim

It’s exactly what it says on the tin: You date some of Pop’s most infamous villains! It’s got awesome art, witty dialogue, voice acting including yours truly as Ringmaster Raven, and the most attractive Poptropica OC I’ve ever seen…I mean–

Please join us in supporting this fan game and begging for Dr. Morrigan to be an option!

A call for guest writers whips up more questions

Greetings Poptropicans! This is Maryann bringing you a recent update from the Poptropica Creatorsโ€™ Blog, an open call for guest writers!

The requirements are fairly simple: you must be 13 years old or older, and sign up through the usual submissions page with a “quick answer on why you think youโ€™d be a great contributor to the blog.โ€ You must also include your (or a parent’s) email.

Many fans (including myself) were thrilled about the news at first, and many members of our online community have submitted for the position! However, it wasnโ€™t long before some questions arose, notably from the Dimension Brosโ€™ video released soon after, discussing the Creatorsโ€™ motives for how they approach their fans. (Disclaimer: Individual fan reactions do not necessarily represent the PHBโ€™s views.) Fans have also questioned how writers would be credited, as this is not the first time Poptropica has asked for fan ideas to use and gain rights to, such as when they asked players to submit ideas for merch.

If you want to learn more and form your own opinions/ideas on this, and read through a bit of legalese, I suggest looking through the terms of use connected to the submissions page.

They state, among other things, that Poptropica may use your content anonymously (unless you give them permission to disclose your name otherwise), on third party sites (such as social media), and that you are not owed any compensation for what you submit. Rest assured, though, that Poptropica does not โ€œclaim any ownership rights to your content.โ€ In the end, itโ€™s up to an individual how they feel about their content being handled, but at the same time transparency is important, especially with a younger demographic.

In the end, hopefully this turns out in a positive way for both the fans reading the blog and those who are picked to be guest writers! Until next time!

Keeping tabs on the new inventory ๐ŸŽ’๐Ÿ’ช and the old islands

Hey Poptropicans, look inside your bags for a big surprise: the inventory has gotten a refresh, with items now being sorted by categories!

While the Island and Pets tabs have always been there, the old Store tab has expanded into more categories to match the store’s layout. Now we have: Island, Costumes, Followers, Powers, Pranks, Misc, Pets. Check it out by opening your backpack from the menu!

Your items are now sorted in categories corresponding to the store.

It’s great to see Poptropica finally tackle the mess that was the inventory, which used to be a never-ending scroll through a single row of slow-loading item cards. Now, unless you have too few items, you can scroll through two rows at a time, and the speed has improved too.

One feature that could make this even better would be the ability to search for items by typing, with a Google-like autofill as you type to help suggest what you’re looking for without you having to type the whole thing. After all, some of us have years’ worth of items!

And there’s more: if your eye was sharp, you may have noticed something different about one of the item cards shown above. Instead of showing the player’s Poptropican, the Rainbow Ride hoodie has its own model, complete with a pose! In fact, all the new Haxe-era items will have their own posing models. Take a look in the store:

While it was cool to have your Poptropican model your items before hitting Costumize (and as shown in the first pic, they still do show up for older Flash-era items) โ€” it’s also interesting to see the variety in these new poses and models. Plus, it’s possible that these premade characters shave off loading time, and if that’s the case, it’s certainly welcome.

And look what else… pets know a thing or two about striking poses, too!

Aww, adorbs.

In other news, the Grapple-Pap Gift side-quest is gone, as you may have seen from the absence of Clareta’s brother in our pictures from Home Island earlier this week. And there’s one more farewell we need to note…

As of January 12, 2021, Adobe Flash is truly dead. Yes, we did already our goodbyes to Flash in 2020, but now, when you visit Early Poptropica Island on the map (which would have led to all the other classic islands, and is only open to members), you’ll be greeted with a simple box with Flash’s grayed-out icon and an info button. Clicking it leads to Adobe’s page about the Flash Player’s end of life. RIP, our Flashy friend. ๐Ÿ™

But all is not lost! You can still play several more (though not all) of the classic islands with the Poptropica mobile app, available on iOS and Android. The app includes all the islands currently on Haxe, as well as all episodes of Survival, Mission Atlantis, PoptropiCon, Arabian Nights, and even the original Mythology Island. Even Kira’s Island, the American Girl ad, is somehow on the app, along with Reality TV: Wild Safari, Mystery of the Map, Shrink Ray, and Galactic Hot Dogs.

The app includes classic islands no longer found on the computer version of Pop.

As the islands there don’t seem to be built with either Flash or Haxe, it seems they can hang out there for a while. Who knows, maybe Poptropica will create a connection for accounts between Haxe and the app like they did with Flash, so we can one day sync across on multiple devices again. It doesn’t seem to be a priority now, but we’ll see.

Another solution for accessing the classic islands you can try is idk’s curation of them on Flashpoint, the Flash game preservation project. You can find instructions on the Old Island Directory, which is linked on the PHB’s Glitching page. At this stage, the setup is a little complicated and only available for Windows. But according to the directory, “availability for Mac and Linux is coming soon, along with less complicated instructions” โ€” so stay tuned!

Anyway, that’s all for this post! What do you think of the inventory update? Will you make use of the methods available for playing the classic islands? As always, keep on popping on!
