My Place in Poptropica

My Place in Poptropica: Spencer

This is theย Myย Place in Poptropica story of Spencer, a longtimeย Poptropican who has experimented with many looks, names, blogs, and more while playing his part in our community. See the bottom of this post for details on sending in your own MPIP!

mpip spencer

Hey, Poptropicanos! Itโ€™s Spencer! Anyway, considering all of the MPIPs lately, I contemplated submitting my own. I guess you can see how that went considering youโ€™re reading this now! Case in point, here is My Place in Poptropica!

2008 | Spencernator Genesis

I remember this memory vividly compared to all of elementary school, oddly enough. ๐Ÿ™‚ It was December 2008, and I was at my cousinโ€™s house for a Christmas party. I was in their basement, petting my cousin Justinโ€™s turtle. Olโ€™ Tuck didnโ€™t seem to have a huge liking towards me. ๐Ÿ˜›

Justin pulled out his laptop and showed me PopRockica! Which isย what I thought it was called for a while. He showed me his account, and I asked if I could make one myself. He spun his laptop towards me and told me to go wild! Using my password for my Webkinzย account as the username, Bulldogsrock4 was born.

Originally, he had blue skin, the snake tongue, and that incredibly blonde, short and spiked up hair. Despite my sisterโ€™s opinion, I thought Creepy Monster was beautiful. ย He had the face only a Spencer could love, I guess. ๐Ÿ˜‰

His outfit before I made a new account!

2009 | Thereโ€™s Been an Awakening

I had been an avid Poptropican (beat all 9 islands), and was a very frequent commentor on the PHB. At the time, I had blown through the screen names Creepy Monster, Spencerjamesd, Daedalus, Poptropica Dude, Dewdog, Awesomeman95 and Bulldogsrock4. (Probably more, considering all of that.) Here I was thinking Slanted Fish had many aliases! I finally had beaten Astro-Knights Island! Ah, what a glorious moment it was. Not the next day, not at all. You know when you know something for a long time, like your locker combination, and you just suddenly forget it like that? Whoops. My password completely slipped my mind! Iโ€™m pretty sure I was just mixing up a โ€˜uiโ€™ with an โ€˜iuโ€™ within my password, but 8 or 9 year old me was frustrated.

Friendly Gamer was created. Well, Freindlygamer1. ๐Ÿ˜€ A few weeks later, I got back on Bulldogsrock4. (I forgot how to spell a word within the password, and didnโ€™t think to Google it because I was young and enraged.) I now had a liking towards the name Friendly Gamer over Creepy Monster, so I stuck with it. For my outfit, I kind of stole it from Dynaboa. I changed it up a bit, but if any of you guys remember him, youโ€™d see the โ€œinspiration.โ€

My routine of beating all the islands and commenting on the Poptropica Help Blog stood. I also created and joined a few cringe-worthy blogs, but theyโ€™re either forgotten or long gone. Trust me, they were not worth sharing regardlessโ€ฆ Fine, you win. Here was myย Twitter,ย some blog I made, and oneย I joinedย but never contributed to. There was also a few more, likeย this oneย andย this oneย โ€“ but for the most part, I was quite inactive on them! I also foundย this beauty, andย I stumbled upon this project called Avapop, before the Avatar Studio. You can see I submitted my Poptropican on there. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย You might damage some brain tissue reading some of those blogs, especially my posts, soโ€ฆ

Be careful.

More 2009-2012 | Beards and Tears

During 2009, I had my very first moment on the PHB. I was one of the few winners of Codienโ€™s Spray On Beard contest! My heart almost exploded. :O

img_5240-1

Trust me, past Spencer. I was veryย suprised. Iย guess Codien liked my idea of a whacky Poptropican! Iย picked the beard with the long mustache and 4 oโ€™clock shadow. I loved it! Around this time, I discovered the Poptropica Help Chat. I attended heaps of parties and unfortunately traded one too many times. ;(

Before that, I had the chance to become a dummy, and show off my newfound handhelds and rares given to me by Motionman95 in his infamous multiverses and chatrooms.

Friendly Gamer drawn with the beard I was talking about!
Friendly Gamer drawn with the beard I was talking about!

I donโ€™t remember the names of the PHC mods, but one of them had access to M.A.P. Perhaps it was Coderkid, thinking about it?I gave them my password, not even thinking twice, and I obtained the Zeus outfit! It was incredibly rare at the time. Someone thought it was really cool, and โ€˜tradedโ€™ me for it. I lost my account. I asked the person for days on end and they refused! Heartbroken, I actually remember telling my mom about my situation.

I had just got her to buy me a month membership so she was not the happiest mother in the world. She also lectured me about giving away my password and the danger of online chatrooms. Thanks for that, unnamed Xat user. Later, I created something along the lines of DNinjaRocks4, (something like that. Iโ€™m not very sure, actually.) and played a lot less. After a few months, I quit. I still lurked the PHB, though! But Friendly Gamer was no more.

Late 2013 and 2014 | Aye, Aye Captain!

โ€œHello darkness, my old friend. Iโ€™ve come to play Poptropica again.โ€

I caught my sister Jillian playing it! She was facetiming our cousin Julia and they were on Time Tangled Island. Seeing them made me remember just how fun actually playing the gameย was! CaptainSpencer was made quickly after. I never looked back! (I did actually, later down the road.)

I picked that username not due to Thinknoodles, but because MrSpencer was taken โ€“ and I thought Captain sounded rad. (I just go by Spencer now. Not a huge fan of Captain. ๐Ÿ˜› )

Around this time, I started commenting on the PHB with my new WordPress account, and went on Xat frequently. I decided to give blogging a shot. I contacted HPuterpop if he could design my header and logo. He responded in under a day with the best Poptropica graphics I had ever seen. I was ecstatic! Spencerโ€™s Poptropica Cheat Blog was founded sometime in June 2014โ€ฆ

img_5241

Andrew and I exchanged a few emails after that. We soon started playing Minecraft and texting on Google Hangouts. He invited me over to the Poptropica Police Network. I quit soon after. I wrote a series on there, and it concluded. Also, I was more into writing about actual Pop updates than roleplaying, which wasnโ€™t my cup of tea. ๐Ÿ˜€

Once my name was out there, I was invited to Icy Foxโ€™s blog,ย The Poptropica Package, andย PAw. Honestly, I put minimal effort in all of those, besides TPP, but my writing still wasnโ€™t the best. Over that time, my Poptropicanโ€™s closet and photos became very rare, being one of the first to have many items. I was bombarded with trading offers so many times on the PHC, I left Xat.

Iโ€™m fortunate for Red Lizard, Slanted Fish, and others great work on making the glitch community less rare (which I no longer am a part of, but still). Poptropica chatrooms are now a much safer place for everyone. ๐Ÿ˜€

After a few issues within my Poptropican and school/family life, I decided to leave. I left my blog and all the others I was so honored to join. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ It was an impulsive decision, but I later tried to convince myself it was for the best.

It wasnโ€™t.

Late 2015 and Present Day | Blast from the Past!

I came back to doing what I love โ€“ providing artwork, theories and posts for the Poptropica community! Slanted Fish has been an absolute dollย towards me these past few years, and Iโ€™m incredibly grateful for our friendship. Sheโ€™s evenย put some of my writing on the PHB a couple of times!

Iย still play Poptropica, and have been attempting to do so on the daily! A lot of the issues I left for are still unresolved, but why let those very few problems hold me back? ๐Ÿ˜› Iโ€™ve been in this game from 2008 to now, and Iโ€™m not leaving anytime soon.

My Poptropica blog is now my personal one, Spencerama! Since Iโ€™ve come back to the blogging world, Iโ€™ve never been happier. โค (Oh, keep in mind Iโ€™ve been playing with themes and logos, and deleted a few posts, so sorry if itโ€™s not a sight for sore eyes.)

Just a side note, as of 1/11/16, I have retrieved my originalย Bulldogsrock4ย account! Despite Friendly Gamerโ€™s rare ninja, Creepy Monster has the white, red, and blue rock star costume, along with the black and white robin hood, and the golden renegade robot! Just thought Iโ€™d add to that. ๐Ÿ˜›

To wrap things up, Iโ€™dย like to thank Slanted Fish, Blake, and Slippery Raptor the most for giving me this place in Poptropica. It wouldnโ€™t have been the same with any of you missing from it. Thank you all for an amazing 7 years! Here is to many more! ๐Ÿ˜€

Well, I guess that concludesย My Place in Poptropica,ย folks!ย Take the mic, Slanted Fish!

โ€“

Hope you enjoyed this โ€œMy Place in Poptropicaโ€ story! Feel free to send in your ownย (please include a minimum of 550 words, type with good spelling and grammar, divide it into labeled sections, and include your username). Look out for more community MPIPs in the future!

PHB Specials

Announcing the 2016 PHB Valentine’s Special!

EDIT (2/10/16): Thank you all for entering! The contest is now closed.ย Check out this post to see whose names will be in the PHB special!

What’s popping, Poptropicans? Blake here, with a really exciting piece of news! Now, first off, all of us at the PHB would like to thank youย for taking the time to take our 2015 survey! We received a lot ofย responses, which will help us figure out what to focus on.

Remember the PHB Christmas special from last year? Well, we’re bringing the something similarย back! Announcing… the 2016 PHB Valentine’s Day special!

Valentine's-Special

Thanks to our very own Ultimate iPad Expert (aka Paul) for the header! While you wait for the release of the special, here’sย a synopsis ofย roughly what to expect right here:

It’s Valentine’s Day at the PHB offices, and Blake decides to play matchmaker amongst his friends. It’s all chaos when Cupid’s bow is added into the mix!

This time, the special has an interactive quality! I saw a lot of comments on the Christmas special asking if certain viewers could be characters in the special. I’m happy to say that I will be picking 5 lucky viewers to be in the special!

All I ask of you is to comment down below your Poptropican’s name (or whatever name you wish to have your character go by in the special), and your favorite ship between two PHB authors! My personal favorite is SamXHPuterpop.ย I’ll need help playing a bit of matchmaker in this special, and I can’t do it by myself!

Anyway, that’s all for now! Stay popping, Poptropicans.

Daily Pop Sneak Peeks, Social Media, Stolen Snapshots, Web Development

Pop Pals, Stolen Snapshots, and History Happenings

Hey Poptropicans! What’s popping?

February is here, and that means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! (As well as spring, if a certain psychic groundhog is to be believed.) Recent Daily Pop sneak peeks indicate that we may soon be getting aย Valentine’s Photo Booth with some cool props:

Here on the PHB, we’ve added yet another new page under our Cool Stuff tab:ย Stolen Snapshots, a puzzle game originally from Slippery Raptor’s Blog! This game tests your Poptropica recognition skills with currently over 25 pictures to guess from, andย Slip’s siteย is always coming up with new ones (plus you can guess hisย current puzzle for a chance to be in hisย Hall of Fame!). Check it out!

stolensnapshots

In case you missed it,ย another recent “Cool Stuff” release was a page titledย Overview of Poptropica Glitching, where we explore the strangelyย wonderfulย world of exploiting Poptropica glitches.

We also recently released (most of) the results from our 2016 PHB Readers’ Survey, with tons of interactive graphs and charts and analyses for each question! Part 2, featuring comments from the response questions, is on its way โ€“ so stay tuned.

Plus, our dearย Creator-senpais have even commented on the post! With the exception of Jeff Heim’s comment during the PHB Poppies last summer, that’s a first! We’re very honored and hope they continue to do so. ๐Ÿ˜€ All the more reason for PHB lurkersย to join the fun in the comments, eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰

creator senpais

Speaking of making PHBย history, the History of the PHB page (under the “About” tab) has now been updated to give a summaryย on the past year of 2015.ย Check it out!

It’s also been really cool having you guys share your Poptropica projects and more over on our Poptropica Help subreddit, and if you’re not already on it, we would love to have you join the fun!ย I’ve even got an Ask Me Anything (AMA) thread going on, so if you have any off-topica questions forย me at all, that’s aย place to get to know me. ๐Ÿ˜€ Don’t miss out โ€“ sign up and post on our subreddit today!

2016 PHB Readers’ Survey Analysis – Part 1

UPDATE: If you’re looking for Part 2 of the 2016 survey analysis, click here!

Heyyo Poptropicans, it’s Ultimate iPad Expert here with the 2016 PHB Readers’ Surveyย results and analysis!

2016PHBReadersSurveyAnalysisPart1

I really apologize for the wait. I know I said I was going to have them out on the 26th, but there was so much to go through.

Over the course of one week, we received 278 responses from people all over the world. And that is why it took so long. I had to go individually through each question counting up the answers and making them into charts, which you’ll see under each question. Similarly, I read through each one of the answers forย the final two questions, but I’ll be answering/replying to my favorite ones in a separate post,ย so a “Part 2” will be coming!

Let me explain the second part. I spent hours working on gathering the survey questions, making the charts, adding commentary in this post, etc. But, I’m still not done with the final two questions of the survey, which are the fill-in ones. And since I wanted to at least get some of it out to you guys, this part will contain all of the other 15 questions. I feel like this post is super long, as it is, so you’ll get a pretty engaging post.

Before I begin, let me explain a really cool feature with these charts. I made them on Google Sheets, which allows me to add the charts and graphs here onto the blog and keep them interactive! ๐Ÿ˜€ You can hover over different sections (such as slices in the pie charts) to view things about each individual section. Like, how many people chose that option, and its percentage in the whole question. There are also two cool interactive maps, which I’ll explain more when we get to them.

Did you participate in the 2014 Survey?

This question is quite straight forward, but back in 2014, the PHB conducted a similar survey and I was quite curious about the correlation between people taking this survey and that one.

Only 18.5% of the people that took this surveyย took the one back in 2014, which to me is very interesting. It seems to imply that the majority of users that took this survey came after that survey, in (mostly) 2015. Quite interesting, but let’s move on.

What is your gender?

Another straightforward question, andย we have the numbers from the 2014 survey to compare with. You can see above that out of the people taking this survey only about one-third are males, while the majority are females at about two-thirds.

Compared to 2014, the male/female ratio is fairly similar. In 2014, females were still on top, but with about 60% to the males’ just about 40%. It hasn’t really changed much, but it seems the female fanbase is holding and increasing its lead.

Also, this question was open to an “Other” option.ย This left it open for some chuckle-worthy additions. Some of which include: “Time Lord,” “Leaf,” “Alien,” “Crocodile” (four times), and (my favorite) “Poptropican.”

What is your age?

Let’s move to a new question, with much more divided results. For this question, we asked what age group the participants taking the survey were in. Poptropica’s target demographic is the 6-15 age range, as shown in theirย account creation process. Commenters of theย PHB have tended to lean towards theย older section of that demographic, which definitely holds true in the results for this question.

It seems not much has changed since 2014. 12 to 14 is not only stillย the front-running age group, but it hasย the same percentage both times at 46%. The 15 to 17 group is also standing its ground, at virtual the same percentage point. It was at 15% in 2014, and is only a little larger at 15.5% now. The younger group of 9 to 11 is now at 30%, 5% down from 2014. These percentage points seem to have been stolen by the 6 to 8 group (which had none in 2014) and the older groups of 18 to 21 and 22 or older (which had a combined 4% in 2014, and is now at a combined 6.2%).

Quite interesting to see that our majority groups have stayed the same, but the younger and older have grown in size in just two years.

What country do you live in?

Now here’s quite an interesting one. This (and the next) question have special charts, although it’s more of an interactive map. You can hover over any country to view the number of people that took the survey from that country.

The more survey participants in that country, the darker the shadeย of red it appears on this map. Similarly, the lighter the red, the fewer survey participants there are in that country. And if the country shows as gray, then no participants were from that country.

The United States is clearly the leading country of survey participants, so I’ve created the map below, without the US, for comparison of the other countries.

In order to discuss the “data” (I sound so techincal), I’ve created a pie chart, since it’s easier to see the comparison between countries. The first includes the US, the second does not.

The United States dominates with a whopping 71.5%, but we’ll get more into that in the next question.

Aside from the United States’ big lead, though, all of the other participants are quite split. The majority (w/o the US) is Canada with (once again w/o the US) 22.5% of participants. Next largest would be our readers down under, in Australia with half of Canada’s percentage, 11.3%. The next four that follow are New Zealand at 8.5%, India and The Philippines both at 7%, and Hong Kong at 4.2%. All of those make total sense, since the PHB is written in English. Historically speaking, all of those countries (and the US) have a huge British or American influence and so much of their populations speak English.

I find many of the smaller ones interesting, as well, though. Just looking at the map, we’ve got readers all over, which is really cool! ๐Ÿ˜€

If you live in the US, which state or territory do you live in?

Just like the last question, we’re asking about location. Out of the 178 people who said they were from the US, what states wereย they from?

It seems like most everyone is pretty spread out. The more populous states (California, Texas, New York, Florida, etc.) seem to be the ones with more participants. Also, there are 7 participants from Massachusetts, so perhaps we had a Creator taking the survey? That’d be super cool.

So, yeh. This results for this question are quite straight forward. The more populous states have more participants.

When did you first find Poptropica?

Now let’s move along to the Poptropica-related question. The first of these is fittingly “When did you first find Poptropica?”

From the charts, we can see that 2010 seems to be the most popular year, with 2011 (my first year) not too far behind.ย For the most part, certain year sections have about the same numbers. 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011 are all at just about 12.5%. Also, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 are all at just about 7.9%.

So, yeh. Most people are pretty much split when it comes to their first year on Poptropica.

How often do you play Poptropica?

It seems that most people play Poptropica only a few times a week, since it sits at 18.8%. This is interesting in comparison to 2014, when “a few times a week” was tied (with “about once or twice a day”) for the top spot at 27.6%.

Even including the winning choice, the survey participants are pretty split between all of the options. It seems, however, that most people play Poptropica more than once a week, which definitely makes sense for our community of Poptropica-enthusiasts!

Are you a member on Poptropica?

The age-old Poptropica dilemma. To have membership or not to have membership, that is the question. Well, it seems the huge majority of participants do not currently have membership. All three ‘no’ answers combine for a huge 81.1% of the total. The huge majority of that section is the “I never have” section which takes 57.8% of participants.

I do have to say, though, that even though Poptropica is a free game for the most part, I expected the “Yes” section to have more than 18.9%.ย Maybe this means people would appreciate membership giveaways more often.

When did you first find the PHB?

Now onto the PHB section of questions! This first one’s results are quite interesting. If you look at the bar chart, you can see that it seems to be continuously increasing as each year goes by.

Frankly, just looking at trajectory, 2016 will likely end up higher than 2015. I’m figuring that our fanbase is growing each year. Super cool! I showed this chart to Slanted Fish, and she mentioned that it’s probably also a possibility that people in pastย years may have left by now. Either way, it’s quite an interesting result.

How did you find the PHB?

We just went over when you guys found the PHB, but now for the details on how. I don’t find the top answer (searching the web) surprising, considering that’s how I found the PHB in the first place.

But, I do have to say that I was not expecting that to be such an overwhelmingly large section. Searching the web dominates all answers with a huge 82.1%. Surprisingly enough, though, in 2014 83.9% of participants chose that answer.

How often do you visit the PHB?

Another fairly linear result set, which is quite interesting. The largest group, making up 18.3%, checks the PHB several times a day. It seems that, for the most part, most visitorsย check the PHB pretty often.

In comparison to 2014, most of the numbers have stayed about the same. They are more spread outย this time over, but that’s because we added more options, splitting the choice.

It seems, also, that the participants check the PHB more often than they play Poptropica. Thank you guys! ๐Ÿ˜›

What types of blog posts do you read frequently?

This is the first question in which participants could choose multiple options, so the quite split answers make sense. News posts make up the largest group, with 168 participants choosing it, andย Blog Updates are fairly close behind with 144 participants choosing it.

The two lowest sections were both write-in sections, None at 8 participants and The Missing Link at 2. Also, may I just add how awesome it is to see that 104 participants say they frequently browseย my series PMFM. Super glad you like the series! ๐Ÿ˜€

How likely is it that you would recommend the PHB to a friend or colleague?

It seems the participants have rated us pretty highly, because most would recommend us to a friend. Just about 36% of survey participants would highly as possible (10) recommend us to a friend, and the next two answers are also fairly high, 8 and 7.

Also, the most chosen lower numbers are 5 and 0. Well, we appreciated your honesty. ๐Ÿ˜›

Now for a comparison with 2014. In 2014, participants who voted 0-6 made up 23%. This time, the same group makes up a combined 28.6%. The 7-8 group also grew slightly from 25% to a combined 26.3%. The highest rated section (9-10) has slightly decreased percentage-wise 52% to a combined 45%, but it’s still the largest group by far.

What portions of the PHB/PHN do you regularly browse?

Similar to the frequent blog posts question, for this question, participants could choose multiple answers. The most popular wasย island walkthroughs (183 people chose it) which definitely makes sense considering our view numbers for those guides. The second most popular is news & sneak peeks which was chosen by 152 participants. The third is the last of our PHB page groups, the “Cool Stuff” pages, which 121 participants chose.

The rest of the options fall more or less around 50%. The highest of these is the Poptropica Wiki! Many of you know I came from the Wiki, so that’s really cool toย see.

What other Poptropica blogs or Poptropica-related sties do you frequently visit?

Once again, this question allowed the participants to check as many as they liked. The mostly popular non-PHB site among participants is the Creators’ Blog, gaining 134 participants’ choosing. Popular YouTube gamer, Thinknoodles, is not too far behind gaining the support of 109 survey participants. The third is an interesting one: 73 participants said that the PHB is the only Poptropica-related site they view.

Most of the other options range from 19 to 50 participants, but the highest of these is the siteย Poptropica Secrets, which 50 participants chose. The final three choices were all write-ins from the Other section.

โ€“

Congratulations if you made it through this post! ๐Ÿ˜€ I hope you enjoyed the results and analysis. I was really intrigued by everything, and I’m excited to share Part 2 with you, when I complete it. Be sure to look out this week for Part 2, because just from the stuff I’ve done, it’s pretty interesting.

UPDATE: Part 2 is now released, click here to check it out!

In case you are curious, we’re planning to do this survey yearly from now on, so look out next January for the 2017 survey.

What do you think about the results? Are you going to tune in for Part 2? Comment below.
