PopComics Island sneak peeks, P-Con Ep. 3 news & upcoming release dates!

Hey guys! Slippery here.

Poptropica recently tweeted a couple of new sneak peeks, and they look like they’re for the upcoming (but yet to be officially announced) island based on the Poptropica comics. There’s Oliver and Jorge! I’m not sure whether the girl in the image is Maya since she wears yellow from what we saw in the graphic novel sneak peeks – or maybe she’s just a test player. Also, that is a very very sad monkey. 😦

The next image shows the island’s temple ruins (relating to this sneak peek of “monkey ruins”) and as you can see, the monkeys are very messy. The Creators also confirmed that the island is now in development, which means we can expect this island next year!

What do you guys think about the Poptropica Comics Island? I think it’s going to be really awesome. Perhaps all those islands that we’ve seen in the comics will come to life on this one Island adventure!

Speaking of islands in the works, while searching Poptropica’s files, I can also confirm that the final episode of PoptropiCon (which is going to be called Reign of Omegon) is in fact in development! Well, there are only two images of the scenes so far, and one of them is not yet done. Some of the items include a “bow”, “old shield”, “gauntlets”, etc. Uh oh. Omegon has made a big mess in the convention!

Moving along, Poptropica also gave away some upcoming release dates for 2015!

It seems like the Creators have a lot on their to-do list, but I’m sure 2015 will be a great year for Poptropica! Also, I can’t wait for Galactic Hot Dogs Island!

So, that’s the end of the post! Two days until Christmas! Happy Holidays everyone!

Daily Pop, Dec 2014: Galactic Hot Dogs, Way Back Week, & more!

Hey Poptropicans! December isn’t quite over yet, but this month’s Daily Pop sneak peeks (and more) are already on Poptropica’s servers! A good chunk of this month’s peeks are for the upcoming Galactic Hot Dogs Island, so let’s take a look at those first (click here for round one of GHD!):

Among the sneak peeks, it looks like we’ll be traversing strange lands including a desert landscape, mushroom kingdom, a place with galactic food stands (Main Street?), and more. It seems we’ll also be stealing an Egg from a big bird’s nest and encountering some interesting creatures.

For more info on Galactic Hot Dogs Island, check out our GHD trivia page! Remember, also, that you can always browse the entire Daily Pop collection on the PHB’s Sneak Peek Archive.

Nestled among all the GHD pics is this sneak peek for the final installment of Arabian Nights Island, which features the spire with the telescope stand seen in Episode 1, but this time, night has fallen!

Finally, since the Creators will be taking a well-deserved break for the holidays, they’ve prepared a “Way Back Week” of peeks from December 26 to January 5, featuring throwback images from years ago. I especially like all the designs for E. Vile, the villain of the Legendary Swords mini-quest!

Again, be sure to check out the PHB’s Daily Pop Sneak Peek Archive (under the Cool Stuff tab) for a complete collection of Daily Pop images with their titles and captions, all the way from when they first began in November 2010 and updated monthly. Stay popping, Poptropicans! 😀

Binary Bard’s Arabic kin, a Mole King, & other things

Hey Poptropicans – just popping in to mention a few things. First of all, the PHB’s Arabian Nights Island Guide has now been updated with a written walkthrough (complete with pictures and even maps for the prison scenes) for Episode 2: Lair of Thieves! (Thanks to Blake, Scary Plug, Pixelzy, HPuterpop and, er, myself for contributing.) Go check it out! (And check out Sam’s review in the post below!)

Also… the coin-counting thief in the treasure keep quite resembles another iconic character from Astro-Knights Island. Does Binary Bard have Arabic kin? Heh. (thanks to Brave Tomato for pointing it out! also, check out our Arabian Nights Island page for more trivia)

Anyway, the Creators recently tweeted a few things worth mentioning – including the fact that Poptropica Membership Gift Cards will soon be available from Amazon!

Also, they tweeted a behind-the-scenes image of a three-eyed monster, which you can see in the current Goldfish Fun ad (more details in this PHB post).

They also shared this cool sketch of a character called the Mole King for an upcoming island (perhaps the underground-themed island, considering the cave-like setting – and is that a drill on his shirt?). Sadly it was scrapped because it “didn’t quite work”. 😦 Brave Sky also points out that the throne he’s sitting on looks like the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones.

mole kingLastly, they uploaded a pic of a red wormhole – what could this be for? Maybe the mysterious genie to be seen in Episode 3 of Arabian Nights? Or, as Tiny Socks points out, it could be the wormhole that brought Oliver and Jorge to Poptropica in the first comic, since the Creators are planning an island based on the Pop comics. Anyway, share your guesses in the comments! 😛

Arabian Nights Island, Reviews

PHB Review: Arabian Nights, Ep. 2 – “Lair of Thieves”

arab2 review

Hey guys – it’s been a while since the PHB has done a review of an island/episode, but with the recent release of Arabian Nights, Ep. 2: Lair of Thieves, I thought I’d do one for this episode. So without further ado, here we go! (Warning: This review contains slight spoilers. If you’re looking for the PHB’s Arabian Nights Island Guide, our written walkthrough with pictures, click here!)

Let me just start by saying that this episode was perfectly glitch-free, at least for me – the new SUIs (sound-updated islands) have gotten some bad rep for being very glitchy in the past year or so, but this time, I didn’t have to restart the island a single time, and I managed to place at #10!

Sometimes when an island comes out, it doesn’t show up on my computer until about 30 minutes later. Amazingly, this time, it showed up on my screen before the Creators had even announced it on their blog. That was the one of the small happy moments of a glitch-free day on the island.

Unlike the recent Shrink Ray Island remake, this episode was so fun to play because it wasn’t glitchy at all for me. On parts where I thought it was glitching out, the glitches seemed to fix themselves. It’s a little hard to explain, but at one point, when I got stuck in a wall, all of a sudden I flew up and landed on the next platform. I’ve tried getting out of walls before and it never worked, but that happened when I wasn’t even holding the mouse. I think this was the least glitchy SUI I’ve ever played!

As far as the plot for this episode, I loved it – lurking around, trying to find the right lamp, dying the thieves’ garb black, and making the magic sand bombs, I felt like I was in a spy movie (my favorite type of film!). At the ending, I felt like I was Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade when he has to pick the right cup – the holy grail – and drinks from it, and survives – similarly in this episode, you have a lamp and you need to put it on a Golden Hand altar… I loved the resemblance, and it was quite a twist to see characters destroyed! Overall, this was a great island plot and I applaud the Creators for making this episode the way it was.

Now about the characters – they were very intriguing, and I really enjoyed the thieves’ characters. Their costumes were fantastic, and I especially loved Brutus’s and the master thief’s costumes. The only thing was, the black garb disguise we put on didn’t seem much like the thieves’ garb. Other than that, the Creators did a magnificent job on the costumes and characters.

Finally, let’s talk about the visuals and sounds – wow, the art on the stone pillars, floor, and the lamp scene just… well… blew my mind away. I have to argue that the visual art in this island is the best in the game so far. And the sound effects were spot-on, especially during the last lamp scene! I really loved the soundtrack as well, and at the part where Brutus chases you, the scene felt super intense because of the scary music playing – a great job from Jeff Heim, Poptropica’s music composer.

Overall score: 4.5/5

I really loved everything about this island. It had everything a quality island could ever want. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been thinking that the Creators are going for quantity over quality, but after all the negative reviews, I think the Creators really put a lot of work into making this island episode perfect, and I’m quite impressed.

But I do have a question – how does this episode advance the island’s story forward? I know, I sound crazy, but what did we really accomplish in this episode? Set off a special power and escape? I thought we were supposed to stop the thieves from causing trouble, and it doesn’t seem like we’ve gotten far on that front yet. That being said, though – I do look forward to the final episode in the Arabian Nights trilogy and seeing how the Creators can top this. 😀

In other news, a news site called BellyFeel recently posted a ten-minute Skype interview they had with Jeff Kinney, Poptropica’s founder (and Diary of a Wimpy Kid author). Check out the video below, or read the transcribed conversation on their site.

In the video, Jeff discusses some of the thought processes behind Poptropica, including scrapping the idea of our characters having their own home/apartment, the decision to switch to episode format due to the popularity of mobile gaming, and even a confession about the original name of Poptropica – “Poptropolis” – being altered due to Nicktropolis, as Brave Tomato theorized in a previous post.

And don’t forget the PHB is having a Christmas party next Saturday (Dec 20th) – we’d love to see you there! Check out the invitation post below for more details. 😀
