Pop 5: Best Poptropica Contests

Pop 5 Contests Header

Hey there everyone! SD here with another Pop 5 post. You know the drill! Today, I’ll be counting down what I think have been the best contests (both from the Poptropica Creators, and within the community).

A good contest’s goal should completely be about community involvement! The more fun it is to participate, the better it is. Simple, but that’s not all! Cool prizes are a great incentive, unique rules lead to an exciting competition, and annual events make for something to look forward to. So let’s get started!

#5: The PHB Halloween Costume Contest

phb 9th hallo

By now, this event is simply traditional, so it had to make this list. With 9 contestsย and counting, our annual sp00py competition continues to be a fan favorite. The name speaks for itself: Every Halloween, the PHB picks the best of the best costumes, made by you guys! I still remember loving it before I became an author, and participating every year!

Having this annual contest allows everyone to look forward to it throughout the year, especially those really into Halloween! It gets everyone in the community involved in something easy to participate in. However, it certainly doesn’t make the top of my list simply because of it’s repetitive nature. With Original Poptropica dying down, there are only so many new accessories to mix and match. But don’t worry to much, because Poptropica Worlds is offering a whole new array of clothing to compete with!

#4: The PHB Tribal Tournament

tribe opening

Though this event has only happened once, I have to say that it was a blast! Ever since Poptropolis Island rose out of the sea, tribes have been a pretty big deal within the community. Inspired by the Olympics, this contest brought together members of the same Poptropica tribe as they fought for glory through art, trivia, and medal collecting!

Not only was this contest completely unique in our community, but it also allowed for many different talents to shine. Yes that’s right, you could still easily participate if you weren’t an artist! Nanobots may not have come out on top, but everyone in every tribe put up an amazing fight, and it was exciting to see all the friendly competition. Are you hoping for this event to rise up once again?

#3: The Poptropica Costume Contest

costume-contest-facebook

Sure, a costume contest isn’t completely original at this point, but this one definitely topped them all! Clothing and customization is a gigantic part of Poptropica, so this event was huge for the community. In this contest, fans got to create their very own Poptropica costumes and winners were promised to be put in the actual game! Who doesn’t want to brag that their outfit is actually in Poptropica? Though the runner ups have not had their costumes implemented in game yet (*cough* what’s up creators *cough*), the grand prize winners can continue to brag to all their friends.

Poptropica Worlds has started to introduceย a lot more modern clothing, and I personally think that’s super cool! It’s no doubt that some of these decisions had to have been inspired by contest entries, as submissions were really creative and diverse. I’m still bummed I won’t be getting to wear some of those great outfits! I’m hoping for another contest like this in the future, what do you guys think?

#2: The PHB’s Poppies

poppies 2018

Not to toot our own horn, but I totally love the Poppies, what about you guys? Similar to award shows like the Oscars, the Poppies presents various Poptropica-themed categories that the entire community votes on and announces the winners in an annual livestream. Like the PHB’s Halloween Costume Contest, it’s something to look forward to all year, and we just had a pretty good one!

The categories are always changing to keep things fresh, and I think it’s great that everyone in the community gets to decide on the winners! Since it’s not your average art contest or anything, it can be much more interesting to see the results. And as a cherry on top, it can be lots of fun to have everyone dress up for an awesome party! We always seem to come back to costumes, huh?

#1: The Create Your Dream Island Contest

67382-creatorkit

I’ll bet this top pick comes as no surprise! The CYDI Contest was a hit, with all Poptropicans dying to know who the winner was, as the Creators sorted through numerous submissions. Ever since Poptropica was born on the internet, fans were coming up with their own island ideas. So, of course a contest where Poptropicans had a chance for their idea to be made a reality was gripping!

This contest not only lead to the creation of Arabian Nights Island, a wonderful adventure, but also boosted Poptropica’s “Island Creator Kit” book. From start to finish, I think this event was amazing and I will continue to mourn those runner up island ideas that sounded spectacular. The contest allowed for the creative to let loose their imaginations in a way that we were all waiting for. In fact, I’m sure many Poptropicans hope to see this contest return!

Honorable Mentions

  1. The Hall of Fame Contestย โ€” This one almost made the list! Having your own Poptropicanย in the game is another big dream for many players. In this contest, all you had to do to achieve that dream was what we all always do: play Poptropica as much as possible! A great idea, and a tough competition!
  2. The #PoptropicaArt Contestย โ€” In the Poptropica community, art is a huge deal! With this contest, Poptropicans got to show off their art skills more than ever across all social media. I’ve got to say that every single submission was amazing!
  3. The Poptropica Sticker Design Contestย โ€”ย This one just recently closed submissions, but winners haven’t been announced yet. It couldn’t make the list, as we haven’t seen how it ends, but it’s without a doubt a cool, unique idea. Another way to show off artistic talent, but with a twist! Who wouldn’t want their friends constantly texting with a sticker thatย you made?

So… do you agree with my list? What have been your favorite Poptropica Contests? What kind of contests do you hope to see in the future?

Hellos & Goodbyes, Pop 5

Pop 5: Poptropica’s Greatest Scenes (and a Goodbye)

It’s Happy Lobster here, with a new Pop 5: about the best scenes, gameplay-wise, to have ever been created in Poptropica.

#5: Topsy-Turvy Bonus Quest, Super Villain Island

While island bonus quests are only available to members after completing the main island quest, Super Villain Island’s one probably tops all other bonus quests. The player gets to experience Mythology Island scenes from a much more thrilling point of view โ€” all the colors are completely inverted, the player can only move upside-down โ€” overall it ensures for an exciting play.

#4: Kerplunk, Game Show Island

Kerplunk is a game show within Game Show Island, and it fully incorporates the ethos of Poptropica: running and jumping around. There are plenty of fun obstacles here, from running across slime-covered, turning platforms and trying not to fall off or get hit by slime, to dodging kicking mechanical shoes, to trying to land on a tiny hovering platform when thrown up by a massive inflatable โ€” all while trying to be as fast as you can!

#3: Mademoiselle Moreau chase,ย Mystery Train Island

There are many obstacle cchases within Poptropica: being chased by Mr. Silva and his shrink ray in Shrink Ray Island; goblins in Twisted Thicket; Myron Van Buren and his dogs in Survival – just to name a few. But this chase, where you are both chasing Mademoiselle Moreau and being chased by policemen in Mystery Train Island, beats all the other chases, with excellent obstacles that vary immensely, unlike most of the other chases in Poptropica, and superb game art.

#2: Fortress levels, Red Dragon Island

Armed with multiple ninja weapons, this section of Red Dragon Island requires great skill to pass through it. With samurais swarming all over the fortress, you need to be quick in action – from jumping to swinging to sneaking unseen. The fortress offers even the most experienced Poptropican players an excellent, exhilarating challenge.

#1: Binary Bard battle, Astro-Knights Island

Astro-Knights Island probably features the greatest boss battle in Poptropica. The player has to fight Binary Bard from the perspective of his owl, Merlin, to try and save Princess Elyana, while dodging his eternally-swinging swords, shooting laser and flying stars that follow you around – while trying to actually damage Binary Bard by getting close enough to him and trying not to die from his relentless attacks. The design of the cathedral and Binary Bard’s knight automaton is simply spectacular, and is no doubt one of Poptropica’s defining scenes.

And with this Pop 5, I am also leaving the PHB.hl3.png

I’ll keep this short and sweet, but no I longer do I have the same passion for blogging about Poptropica as I did in 2016, when I joined the Poptropica community as well as the PHB. This doesn’t mean I dislike Poptropica, but I also have other things to focus on in life. I’ll still be in the Pop community to a small extent, like posting some Poptropica art on my DeviantArt account, or very occasionally going onto the PHC chat on Discord.

I’d like to thank the ever-helpful PHB team, as well as other members of the Poptropica community during my time here for their amazing support.

Thanks for understanding.

Pop 5: Why Poptropica is the best game for kids โ€” a parent’s perspective

Hey Poptropicansโ€”this is a guest post by Leona Henryson, a mother and educator who, along with her son, enjoys Poptropica and its fan community. From the perspective of one parent, here’s why Poptropica is great for kids!

Poptropica Portfolio image 10

Games have exploded across the years and are now found everywhere โ€“ on our phones, computers and the internet. The good news is that theyโ€™ve been coopted into doing more than just entertaining. They now educate in equal measures. This means they are useful for children and adults to learn everything from languages to math.

An example which nicely straddles the border between entertainment and education is the game Poptropica. This game, specifically designed for children and offers them an environment that is safe, even while allowing them to interact with millions of other children. They hone their puzzle-solving skills and collect points with which they can upgrade the appearance of their character. All while being kept safe and secure.

So what are the big advantages of the game?

#1: Itโ€™s hugely entertaining

There really is no getting around it. This game is hugely entertaining. There are so many different games that go in so many different directions that children will be sure to find something theyโ€™ll enjoy doing.

In fact, so many people have such good memories of the game growing up that theyโ€™ll return to it when theyโ€™re older just to go on a trip down memory lane.

Heck, even parents sometimes get sucked into the platform themselves, due to its entertaining puzzles, its whimsical characters and its funny ideas. That means that this offers a great opportunity to play games together.

And naturally, itโ€™s hugely important that the game actually entertains children. After all, whatever other educational or social advantages the game has, if children donโ€™t actually want to go on there to play, then it wonโ€™t be much use, will it?

#2: It performs as a gateway

In todayโ€™s environment it is important we all learn computer literacy, as a lot of the jobs that are going to be created in the next decades are going to depend on how well we can interact with computers. At the same time, we donโ€™t want to just thrust our children into the world wild web, with its trolls, stalkers and adult topics.

Thatโ€™s where platforms like Poptropica come in. They teach the former, while making sure the latter problems canโ€™t intrude. In this way, it forms a great way for your children to start learning how to use the internet. Theyโ€™ll come to learn a great deal of the basic ideas that govern how we interact with virtual environments and begin to understand the underlying ideas.

#3: Safe interaction

Another nice advantage is that the game has been constructed in such a way that children can interact and play games together, without inviting the problems normally associated with that kind of thing. On the different islands in the game, children can play games against other players and even communicate with them โ€“ albeit through a limited repertoire of dialogue options.

This means that children get to enjoy one of the most exciting aspects of the online word โ€“ namely being together with millions of other children who are sharing the same experiences โ€“ while not running any risk.

#4: Itโ€™s great to do together

The game can be at its most rewarding if actually done together with your child โ€“ particularly if theyโ€™re still young. Thatโ€™s because some of the puzzles can be a bit challenging, and they do need pretty decent reading skills to understand the nature of some of the puzzles.

This could be seen as a drawback, but you can also turn this into a learning opportunity. For example, by helping your kid find the islands they enjoy the most and the topics that most excite them, youโ€™re going to be able to get an idea of what they actually enjoy. This you can then explore further offline, for example. Or you can use it as a way to find interesting topics that you wish to broach.

In this way, the game can become a fantastic educational tool as well, as it opens up roadways and paths for you to find topics your kids find exciting.

#5: Itโ€™s worth your time

If youโ€™re looking for a safe and fun way for your children to spend time online, then you have to check out Poptropica. Itโ€™s a highly enjoyable environment that you and your kids will love to explore and learn about.

This can be done for free. Alternatively, you can pay for a month of access for $3 US โ€“ which really isnโ€™t going to break the bank โ€“ in order to get full member access. This opens up some more islands, gives them early access to the new islands being designed, and gives kids full access to the store where they can design the look of their character.

Whatever way you choose, youโ€™re not going to be disappointed by Poptropica.

Pop 5: Books that would make great Poptropica Islands

Hey Poptropicansโ€”this is a guest post by Striped Cactus, who shares about some books that, in her opinion, would make awesome Poptropica Islands. You, too, canย write for the PHBโ€”take a look down below to find out how!

pop5 books as islands

Admit it: weโ€™ve all had a moment when weโ€™ve been watching a movie or reading a book, and then suddenly it hits you that โ€œthis would be a great Poptropica Island!โ€ And then you get distracted by thinking about how the storyline would go, the Poptropicans you would meet, the items you would pick upโ€ฆ No? Just me?

Well, hereโ€™s a Pop 5 list of literary places I wish were in Poptropica. Keep in mind, since Poptropica is technically a โ€œkids’ game,โ€ Iโ€™m keeping my list age-appropriate.

#5: A Wrinkle In Time

red dragon12

Yeah, maybe part of my inspiration for this is the hype for the reboot of the movie coming out soon, but this has always been one of my favorite books, and how awesome would it be to have your Poptropican be a stand-in for Meg, going on adventures with Calvin and Charles-Wallace? I would kill for a Poptropican island for Wrinkle.

Iโ€™m thinking a boss battle with IT comparable to the Red Dragon boss battle at the end of that island (Cloud Dragon vs Fire Dragon), or something like the Steamworks boss battle.

#4: The Lightning Thief

pj1

This is just too good of an opportunity to pass up. Iโ€™ve always dreamed of having a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt for my Poptropican, and Iโ€™m talking outside of that one ad they did for theย Sea of Monstersย ad millennia ago. Iโ€™m thinking spacebar activates Riptide, ya know, with some mini battles every time you have to fight a monsterโ€ฆ It would be a very unique island to the Poptropica universe, but it would be so awesome.

#3: Theย Harry Potter Series

harrypop

Now, if you know me well enough, youโ€™ll know that Iโ€™ve always been on the borderline with Harry Potter. Itโ€™s never been my favorite book series and I never could quite understand the hype that the fans associated with it, but on all levels, I admit the Harry Potter books would make one heck of a Poptropica island. Think getting to choose your own house, a Quidditch mini game, Voldemort boss battle, a scene in the Hogwarts Expressโ€”the opportunities for that are endless.

#2: The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles

tt2

I know few people have heard of this book, but hear me out. Itโ€™s written by Julie Andrews herself (The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins) and itโ€™s a book that changed my life when I was younger, inspiring me to take writing seriously. The plot resembles something I could definitely envision as a Poptropica island.

Three children must learn to submit themselves to their imaginations to travel into something of an alternate dimension where a mystical creature called a Whangdoodle lives, the last of his kind. Guiding them is a man known mostly as โ€œthe professorโ€ and he holds the key to cloning a Whangdoodle, in hopes that there would be more in the future. Sort of like if you mixed Twisted Thicket with Mission Atlantis.

#1: A Tale Dark and Grimm

mcarnival2

A Tale Dark and Grimm still remains my favorite book of all time. Yeah, some parts of it might be a tad bit gruesome for kids. When the book was written, the imagery was left to the imagination, but if youโ€™re seeing some of the stuff described as an animated video game, those could be frightening images.

I mean, grantedโ€ฆ when it comes to the Poptropica Creators, weโ€™re talking about the same creeps (and I say this with love) who made the Jersey Devil that haunted my childhood so, I guess these things are possible. A combination of some of the most classic fairy tales while also providing some valuable and realistic life lessons? Very cool.

Iโ€™d love to hear some of your guysโ€™s ideas for books that would make cool Poptropica islands! Be sure to tell me in the comments. ๐Ÿ™‚

Stay safe out there, everybody.

Pop 5: Goals for After You’ve Beat All the Islands

Hey Poptropicans! This is a guest post written by Poptropica community member Gabren (Mythical Beard), with 5 ideas for things to do after you’ve beat all the islands. Enjoy!

pop5 after islands

So you’ve finished all the islands in Poptropica. You’ve beaten every last one. You feel pretty good about yourself. So you’re done, right? You beat the game, after all. Or did you?

Before you reach for that exit button, consider trying these challenges in-game:

1) Time yourself on the islands and set new records.

See how fast you can beat an island! And I’m not talking about any island, either. I’m talking about one of the looooong islands, like Escape From Pelican Rock. (My best time for that one was 36 minutes, 12 seconds.)

This is one of those addicting time-wasters that takes skill, patience, and just a little bit of luck. See if you can beat my score and set some new records for yourself!

restart

2) Wear every item in the game at least once.

Being able to say that you’ve worn every item, male and female, in the game, is a very impressive feat. (I still have yet to complete this one.)

Glitching tools like the Avatar Studio Glitch (ASG) and iPop can help you change your gender and access all kinds of rare items.

With the ASG, you to change into a whole new outfit almost instantly. And with iPop, you canย view and send various items to your account, plus other benefits like increasing your battle ranking. You can find both these tools (and more) on the PHB’s Glitching page.

3) Contribute to the Poptropica Help Blog.

Why not? You want to see more good posts, right? Why not have it be one of your own? Check out ideas, guidelines, and more on the Write for the PHB page!

write for phb

4) Get a 5-star battle ranking.

By winning mini-games against other players in common rooms, you can increase your battle ranking: that’s the five little stars in the upper-left corner that you can see when you hover your mouse over yourself or another player in a common room.

Many people don’t have a five-star ranking, so it’s pretty impressive to have one (that is, unless you used iPop to get one).

cosmoe

For advice on all the multiplayer games, check out the PHB’s Game Guides!

5) Make and share some ASG accounts.

So we talked about the Avatar Studio Glitch (ASG). But did you know that it is possible to make your own ASGs? Just keep a few things in mind when you make your own:

  1. Your ASG must be wearing one of the following:ย jetpack from Early Poptropica, glider from Time Tangled, bowtie from Spy, or chameleon suit from Spy.
  2. If you want to share your ASG on the PHB, make sure your ASG is unique so the collection doesn’t have too many overlaps.
  3. Have fun!

ASG gift

So that’s it for now. Tell me what you guys think!

Keep popping,

Gabren
