Jeff Kinney talks about Cryptids Island

Hijuyo: Hey guys, today we’ve got big news for you Poptropicans, and to make it all the more awesome, Jeff Kinney is going to guest-star in this post with me!
Jeff: Hi Poptropicans, my name is Jeff Kinney, and I’m the author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. But I also work here at Poptropica, where we’ll always bring you new islands for you to enjoy. Our latest island is called Cryptids Island.
Hijuyo: Sweet. There’s a lot of hype about that. What can you tell us about it?
Jeff: It’s all about Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the Chupacabra, the Jersey Devil. I love these stories of legendary creatures and we think you guys are gonna love it too.
Hijuyo: Nice! When can we play it?
Jeff: On December 20th, the new island comes out for members, and then it comes out to the general public a few weeks later. I think you’re gonna love this island, and I think you’re gonna love what we have in store for 2011.
Hijuyo: 2011’s not too far away! What can we look forward to?
Jeff: Many more games and islands for you to enjoy and experience. Hope you have fun!

Well, that’s all the time Jeff has for us, but you may have picked up some very interesting things the Creators let us see in that video!

  • Jeff’s room is filled with Poptropica merchandise, including some unreleased ones! There’s also a framed picture of him next to a statue with a beard. ๐Ÿ˜›
  • Poptropica game cards! If you’re interested in those, read more about them here.
  • Poptropica wall posters! Not sure where you can get those, since Poptropica’s LTLprints store doesn’t seem to stock them.
  • Poptropica Fun Book! Maybe we’ll see these hit bookstores soon! The title suggests it might be a Poptropica activity book, with puzzles or games or whatever that can be done on paper. ๐Ÿ˜›
  • Video peeks of the upcoming Cryptids Island! Bushes trimmed to be shaped like Nessie, a hot air balloon, a sherpa campsite, and more.
  • Wild West Island! Perhaps the most interesting peek of all, this is hinted on a poster on one of the walls. This might also explain the recent Daily Pop sneak peeks.

What else do you think might be in store for Poptropica’s future?

Know Your Cryptids: Chupacabra

Chupacabra: ยฟQue es?

Cryptids Island is coming on Monday to Poptropica! Before you take on some of the world’s most fearsome mythical monsters, we’d like to tell you a little bit about the legends.

“Chupacabra” is Spanish for “goat-sucker,” and that’s exactly what this creature is said to do. Unlike many cryptids, the Chupacabra is a relatively recent phenomenon. The legend began in Puerto Rico in 1995, when a farmer found that several of his animals had been killed overnight, and the blood drained from their bodies through strange puncture wounds.

Since then, the stories have spread to Mexico and the United States. But accounts of the Chupacabra vary widely: sometimes it is reported to be doglike in appearance, and sometimes, as in the drawing above, as an alien creature that walks on two legs. The only thing that unites all the tales is the creature’s bloodsucking behavior.

Recently, a Chupacabra body was thought to have been found, but was proven to be a coyote with mange. So the questions remain. Is the Chupacabra a new, unknown animal? Is it a space alien? Or is it nothing more than a legend dreamed up by angry farmers? Perhaps one day we will know the truth.

Do you believe in the Chupacabra?

CAPTAIN CRAWFISH

“Goat-sucker”? o.O …hmm, maybe we don’t want to encounter this cryptid…

[Distantly, you hear a noise]
Captain Crawfish (what number are we on? 8?): AAAHHH!
(You hear slurping.)
Chupacabra: Yur yummeh, Crawfeesh.
Captain Crawfish 8: NOOOoooOOoo! I’ve still got to live! Please, don’t suck my blood! Heck, I’m not even a goat!
Chubacabra: Ewww! I only eat GOATS! *spits Crawfish out*
Captain Crawfish 8: Whew! I survived!

[His panicked footsteps come closer to the PHB set and he emerges, out of breath from running for his life.]
Captain Crawfish 8: Hey, guys! It’s me!
PHB peoples: OMG!OMG! ME FIRST! LET ME AT HIM! :O
Captain Crawfish 8: …whoops.
(The crowd descends on Captain Crawfish!)
PHB peoples: FOOOOOOOD!
Chupacabra: *reappears* Where is he? I don’t care if he’s fish, I want him too! SHARING IS CARING, PEOPLES!

(Due to violence, the rest of the scene has been censored.)

Cryptids Island

Meet Nessie, your new bestie.

Before I get on with this new “Know Your Cryptids” post, the PHB has big news to share about Cryptids Island…

Cryptids Island will open on Monday, December 20!

(with membership)

So, yay for those members out there, and for the rest of us – there’s no news yet on when Cryptids Island will be available to the public for free, but we’ll have the latest scoop about it here, so stay tuned. And now let’s welcome Nessie:

Know Your Cryptids: Loch Ness Monster

Nessie: Real, or all wet?

Cryptids Island is coming very soon to Poptropica! Before you take on some of the world’s most fearsome mythical monsters, we’d like to tell you a little bit about the legends.

Tales of the Loch Ness Monster go back centuries. Affectionately known as “Nessie,” she is said to live in the deep waters of Loch Ness, a lake in the Scottish Highlands. By most accounts, Nessie is a massive, long-necked creature that can travel on land as well as in the water.

The best-known picture of Nessie, shown above, was taken in 1934 by a surgeon named Dr. Wilson. Years later, another man claimed to have helped fake the photo, but it was impossible to know whether he was telling the truth, or simply seeking fame for himself.

Theories abound as to what Nessie could be. Some say that eyewitness accounts are honest misidentifications of everyday animals and objects. Others say she could be a leftover relic of the dinosaur age, specifically a plesiosaur. Still others think that there might once have been a Loch Ness Monster, but that it has died. And, of course, the possibility remains that Nessie is nothing but a hoax.

What do you think — do you believe in the Loch Ness Monster?

CAPTAIN CRAWFISH

Captain Crawfish sounds a little nerdy there, don’t you think? Maybe we should eat his brains…

LOL JK.

Anyway, there’s also a new PCB poll asking, “Do you believe in the Loch Ness Monster?” At the time of this writing, 55% said yes, 22% said no, and 22% are undecided. (Where’s the other 1%? o.O) HAS CAPTAIN CRAWFISH TAKEN YOUR BRAINS? :O
