Cryptids Island, Pop Places IRL

Pop Places IRL: Cryptids

Pop Places IRL Header

SD here with another “Pop Places IRL” post, everyone! Are you sick of me yet? This time around, I will be comparing scenes from Cryptids Island with the scenes it was inspired by in real life (IRL). Check out our official guide for the island here.

Even though Main Street seems pretty ordinary, you actually end up visiting many real places in Cryptids Island! In fact, I’m sure you’ve heard of many of these locations.

Let’s start off with what may be the star of the quest… Nessie! The Loch Ness Monster is from, well, Loch Ness. If you were unaware, it’s a large body of freshwater in Scotland. As one would expect, it’s famous for its aquatic monster sightings!

Other than Nessie, we also search for the Yeti in the Himalayas, a huge mountain range in Asia. Like in game, there sure are monasteries in the IRL mountains! We also visit the Himalayan Mountains, particularly Mount Everest, in Time Tangled Island.

After the mountains, our Poptropicans attempt to capture the infamous Chupacabra in Puerto Rico! Sorry goats, but I don’t think you could pay me enough money to go face that beast IRL…

Talking about beasts, up next is New Jersey! And that means the Jersey Devil. Am I bringing up bad memories for anyone? If you ever visit, maybe you should stay closer to the city, just to be safe…

Finally, we visit the Pacific Northwest in pursuit of Big Foot. This location may be a bit broad, but roughly includes states like WashingtonOregon, and Idaho in the US. They are known for having the most frequent Big Foot sightings!

I think that’s it for the real-life Cryptids Island tour! Have you been to any of the places we listed? Or better yet, have you think you spotted any of these cryptids IRL?

Where would you like us to go next time for this series?

Cryptids Island

Director D’s pick: Cryptids Island, and a moment of silence…

Lately as some of you may have known, the creators are putting more and more work into individually sharing those islands that they like the most. Quite naturally for some poptropican gamers, today’s island on the agenda is…

Cryptids Island!

Director D sure has a pick, huh? For those of you who haven’t yet taken the quest on this island, the main goal and plot is to hunt down exotic creatures, find evidence for their existences (such as the loch ness monster), and of course foil the plot of evildoers along the way. You can play Cryptids Island simply by visiting it on the map. Although this island has been out for over a year, it’s still quite an adventure. Nice pick, director. Honestly, though, I’d thought you’d choose Spy Island.

Further more Director D also points out his fascination over the Legendary Swords adventure! You can now pick up this gold card for free, non-member and member alike, in the poptropica store. Have fun chopping the heads of evil robots off.

Lastly, as all of you have heard the news, I’d like to take a moment of silence on behalf of those who’ve suffered greatly the past weekend. At a screening of the Dark Knight rises, twelve people were killed and 58 others injured in debilitating conditions during a shootout. The suspect even showed up in court today. This picture was an excerpt, given with permission, from cartoonist Bill Amend, which I thought suited the moment. You can read his comics at

My prayers and thoughts are with all those in this tragedy.

Or, put someone else in the limelight… you might be interested in learning about the legendary cryptid Chupacabra, who you might just be able to encounter very soon on the next Poptropica adventure, Cryptids Island!

Know Your Cryptids: Chupacabra
Chupacabra: ¿Que es?

Cryptids Island is coming on Monday to Poptropica! Before you take on some of the world’s most fearsome mythical monsters, we’d like to tell you a little bit about the legends.

“Chupacabra” is Spanish for “goat-sucker,” and that’s exactly what this creature is said to do. Unlike many cryptids, the Chupacabra is a relatively recent phenomenon. The legend began in Puerto Rico in 1995, when a farmer found that several of his animals had been killed overnight, and the blood drained from their bodies through strange puncture wounds.

Since then, the stories have spread to Mexico and the United States. But accounts of the Chupacabra vary widely: sometimes it is reported to be doglike in appearance, and sometimes, as in the drawing above, as an alien creature that walks on two legs. The only thing that unites all the tales is the creature’s bloodsucking behavior.

Recently, a Chupacabra body was thought to have been found, but was proven to be a coyote with mange. So the questions remain. Is the Chupacabra a new, unknown animal? Is it a space alien? Or is it nothing more than a legend dreamed up by angry farmers? Perhaps one day we will know the truth.

Do you believe in the Chupacabra?

“Goat-sucker”? o.O …hmm, maybe we don’t want to encounter this cryptid…

[Distantly, you hear a noise]
Captain Crawfish (what number are we on? 8?): AAAHHH!
(You hear slurping.)
Chupacabra: Yur yummeh, Crawfeesh.
Captain Crawfish 8: NOOOoooOOoo! I’ve still got to live! Please, don’t suck my blood! Heck, I’m not even a goat!
Chubacabra: Ewww! I only eat GOATS! *spits Crawfish out*
Captain Crawfish 8: Whew! I survived!

[His panicked footsteps come closer to the PHB set and he emerges, out of breath from running for his life.]
Captain Crawfish 8: Hey, guys! It’s me!
Captain Crawfish 8: …whoops.
(The crowd descends on Captain Crawfish!)
Chupacabra: *reappears* Where is he? I don’t care if he’s fish, I want him too! SHARING IS CARING, PEOPLES!

(Due to violence, the rest of the scene has been censored.)
