Advertisements, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Island, Monkey Wrench Island

The Road Chip begins, Chocomonkeys, Charlie open to all!

What’s popping, Poptropicans? Blake here, with another bit of Poptropican ne- WHAT AM I DOING?! No, seriously! WHAT. AM. I. DOING. Here I am again, having to suffer through another Chipmunk movie! WHO ASKED FOR THIS? So yes, there’s currently an ad for the DVD release of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip! Because EVERYONE wanted this movie… *sigh*

Hang on… What’s this, I disappeared for a month without any explanation, and now someone else has already reviewed the ad that plagues my very existence? Alright, guess I’ll just have to announce the next monkey then… (Thanks to UiPE for the pic!)

The newest monkey follower to join the pack is Charlie the Chocomonkey! Look at this guy! He’s like a little Oompa-Loompa, how cute! Pick this guy up on the Main Street of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Island, right next to Wonka’s factory! And then he’ll follow you. Forever. Always waiting.

Because of the beloved Chocomonkey, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Island is currently not marked as being members only. This means (as confirmed by Poptropica) non-members can currently play the island! This is only supposed to be for a limited time, and we’re not sure how long this will go for, so get going before it becomes members only again!

Well, that’s that! See you later, and as always, stay popping, Poptropicans!

Seven Islands become members only!

Okay… so I got some bad news, guys. Remember the whole Nabooti demo thing and how Nabooti Island is only for members now? Well, more islands have joined the members only club.

7reasons

There may be over 40 islands, but now 7 of those islands are exclusive for members. The seven islands are all sponsored islands (islands that are based on a franchise/not completely original), with the exception of the more recent Galactic Hot Dogs Island, which isn’t on the list:

Non-members can still play a demo of each island, but nothing beyond that. With Timmy Failure Island coming up, we have to wonder if that will eventually be locked to members only as well, since it’s also a sponsored island.

Yes, what we have feared is true. I just hope Poptropica won’t become completely membership oriented. 😦 Let us know in the comments what you think!

Poptropica Portfolio: Chris Goodwin

Nate Greenwall isn’t the only one posting his Poptropica illustrations – I recently stumbled upon the site of Chris Goodwin, an illustrator/designer working for Poptropica, whose online portfolio can be found here. This post comes in three parts. As always, click to enlarge the pics!

Perhaps the most interesting section is character design: designs for E. Vile’s robots from Legendary Swords (as well as some props seen in P-Con: Ep. 2), a huge collection of characters (including several unreleased ones – some possibly for Ep. 3 of PoptropiCon!), unused flying ace designs (the corner suggests they were for the Virus Hunter minigame, Nano-Combat Training), ideas for Max McGullicutty’s look in Survival: Ep. 5, and finally, rough drafts of robots for Game Show Island.

The next section is concept art – ideas for various parts of the game. Here we see color plans for areas inside Joe’s body on Virus Hunter Island, shape ideas for “air creatures” in his lungs, a look at an extravagant (though unused) virus bug, several sketches of dark scenes, racer cars we’ve seen before as a scrapped idea, a Legendary Swords doodle, the Monster Carnival common room, and a sketch from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Island.

Lastly, there’s a section devoted to scene illustrations – most of these are already in the game, though the one of the cabin is not (but it seems to belong to the unnamed geological park island).

The rest are: the tutorial island in the Poptropica app, Ephraim University (both exterior and interior) from Mocktropica, Soundstage #1 on Back Lot, the Hemlock Herald newspaper room on Ghost Story, a hallway door and post office common room on Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and the bonus quest on Twisted Thicket. Seeing them each as one big scene makes it all the more awesome. ❤

Poptropica sure is beautiful, and Chris has made some really creative contributions to the game we know and love. Enjoy the Chris Goodwin collection, and stay popping, Poptropicans! 😀

Okay, so it doesn’t build or destroy anything in real life, but it might sit nicely on your shelf – as the Creators demonstrated with this picture that includes a real (but old) Wonka chocolate bar as a thanks to the Creators from when Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Island launched.

Well, that’s pretty much it! Stay popping, Poptropicans.

“Okay Timmy, back to our vacation!”

“Yay boss, I love vacationing in Albuquerque! Thanks for finally letting me out of my kennel for once!”

“Be glad I’m not using you as my transportation. I’m being merciful.”

Unused ideas, upcoming islands, last Charlie post, & uncostumizables

Hey Poptropicans! The following is a series of Poptropica news tidbits involving some unused ideas, future islands, the third and final Charlie Island post on the Roald Dahl site, and a look at why some things are uncostumizable. If you’re interested, read on!

Unused ideas: behind the scenes

Poptropica goes through lots of ideas in its planning stages, and recently on Twitter, they’ve posted a couple of these just for fun – check out the awesome rides on WaterThrill Island! (click to enlarge images) However, they’ve made it clear this won’t be an actual island. 😦

Or will it? Sometimes Poptropicans wonder if the Creators are running out of ideas, but perhaps this tweet will put your mind at ease – the creative geniuses at Poptropica don’t give up that easily, claiming to have “hundreds of ideas” up their sleeves!

Another behind-the-scenes moment they shared was the development of the Mission Atlantis Island logo, which went through many font style changes – I’d have to say they ended up picking the best of the bunch! What say you? 😛 By the way, if you’re curious about other island logo designs that didn’t make the final cut, check out the ones for Back Lot Island!

Upcoming islands: GHD and a 3rd Wimpy Kid Island?

Arabian Nights: Ep. 1 will be releasing to members this Thursday, but what other adventures are coming to Poptropica? Without giving an exact order, Poptropica says that more PoptropiCon and Arabian Nights can be expected soon (likely continuing to come out with episodes interchangeably), but after this, we may see a Galactic Hot Dogs Island – and even another Wimpy Kid Island!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Poptropica: The Run of the Factory

catcf 50th

For the 50th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Poptropica has been sharing some behind-the-scenes about how they brought the classic story to an interactive online game – and now, their third and final post is up on the Roald Dahl website! Here’s a little excerpt:

Our final challenge in adapting Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Poptropica was creating fun gameplay that would move the story forward, and be true to the spirit of the book. It’s here that the differences between a book and a game are the most dramatic. In the story, the children are punished for breaking the rules. On Poptropica, players are supposed to break the rules!

And here are links to the rest of the story on Poptropica’s delightful adaptation:

As I’ve said before, it’s a great story with a great and unique island adventure! 😀

Why are some items uncostumizable?

Ever wondered why some costume parts just can’t be Costumized? Poptropica recently tweeted that they do it to keep some things valuable for business – but that doesn’t explain why some wearables can’t be obtained in any way (that doesn’t involve cheats, I mean), even if you’re a member or through buying merchandise.

uncostumizable

In particular, Popman564 wanted to know about having a monkey costume – but to that end, it looks like that will remain rare. If you’re interested, you can read the slightly amusing conversation he had with Poptropica here (part one) and here (part two). Poor monkey.

All right, that’s all for now, folks. You can all go home now – unless you’re reading this at home, in which case you should just ignore this sentence because I’ve rambled on long enough.

Stick around for the release of Arabian Nights: Ep. 1, How Bazaar coming later this week: the PHB will have a guide up for that as soon as possible! In the meantime, keep on popping on. 🙂
