Hellos & Goodbyes, Pop Petitions

Pop Petition: What we want from the Creators’ Blog (and a message)

Pop Petition Header

Yep, Spotted Dragon here with another Pop Petition! Like our previous petition posts, today we’ll be voicing some of our top concerns and hopes for our favorite game. And you’re welcome to chime in down in the comments!

There’s always room for improvement, right? Well I certainly think so. Not only have Poptropica islands been a bit lacking as of late, but the Creators’ Blog itself seems less than impressive lately as well. It seems like forever ago when we had frequent posts by notable personalities, but now it’s hard to tellย who is doing the posting in the first place!

#1: Frequent Updates

This one seems a bit obvious, doesn’t it? A little update wouldn’t hurt anyone, and in fact would ease the minds of many fans! These days, what posts we do get from the Creators’ Blog seem to be “filler” at best.

creators-blog-1

It seems to me that the main purpose of the Creators’ Blog should be updates. Leaving Poptropicans completely in the dark about the game’s future simply sparks concerned theories and, well… posts like this. It is totally understandable that not everything can be revealed, but it’s hard to maintain interest in something that you know nothing about.

That being said, we have gotten some posts recently that fall under the “update” umbrella, ranging from ad announcements even to an actual island announcement. Posts like these certainly make me optimistic, but trends do not exactly show consistency, nor on-time publication. And it may just honestly be that we aren’t getting the rightย kind of updates we are hoping for?

#2: Fan Interaction

We’ve all seen theย ย comment capabilities on the blog, in hand with the “liking” system, but we’ve also had our fair share of complaints about it. We’ve also seen new interactive “games” being featured on the blog, like one that looks a whole lot like some of our own community members game ideas

Guess the Island

A big complaint we’ve already faced is the time it takes for a comment to get approved. While this is of course understandable, it does seem to take longer than necessarily… necessary. Additionally, there are original content concerns, which at this point is to be expected. The “guess the island” style game has circled fan blogs for years now, and the Creators are really late to the punch.

These issues are not only fixated on the Creators’ Blog, but stem to their other social media outlets too. Fans continue to miss Skinny Moon, Poptropica’s old social media manager, and for good reasons. With her in charge of social media, someone’s job was literally to interact with fans on a daily bases. Voices were heard more often then than ever, and since she has left that feeling has steadily declined. We persistently tweet questions and try reaching higher levels of interaction these days, but whoever is behind Poptropica’s Twitter (and Blog of course) today just doesn’t do as much as we’re looking for I suppose.

#3: Behind the Scenes Looks

Concept art, sneak peeks of upcoming features, HQ photos, you name it. Behind the Scenes pictures always seem to intrigue fans, if not only a little bit. And while we do get the occasional glance behind the curtain on the Creators’ Twitter, their blog posts are less than enticing in that department.

more_character_sketches

Again, it is understandable that not everything can be revealed. That would take the fun out of everything! But hints here and there lead to amazing theories and excitement among Poptropicans. With the length between island releases increasing, it is important to keep up moral and interest in the fanbase.

Though it’s nice to see some photos from HQ on Twitter fairly often I suppose, the Creators’ Blog continues to not live up to its potential. And our hunger for information on islands is constantly unsatisfied.ย This doesn’t mean we want a bunch of repetition between the social media platforms, but it does mean that the Creators should catch on to what their audience gravitates towards.

#4: The Archive Feature

Lucky Joker was quick to point out that the archive feature on the Creators’ Blog was recently removed. Though there is still a search-bar, the sidebar of the blog has always seemed a bit bare.

pdmll

Currently, the sidebar on the blog consists of a little welcome message, social media links, a search-bar, popular posts, and the list of island info pages. But what if you want to… pop down memory lane? Archive features can be super useful when you need or want to look back at old posts. While a search-bar provides a similar service, sometimes you don’t know what a post’s title is, or you aren’t looking for anything specific. Archives are especially useful when you’re looking for something in a particular month or time-frame.

Though this feature obviously is not a constant need, it’s a nice tool for both those nostalgic Poptropicans and those intense researchers. It wouldn’t be used everyday, sure, but what’s the harm in keeping it up? It doesn’t take up a huge amount of space and it adds more purpose to the sidebar as a whole.

#5: ANSWERS!

Yes, this request definitely overlaps some points I’ve made in this post already, but I still think it deserves a full section of it’s own! Similar to fan interaction and frequent updates, I think “answers” sums up most of what I’m looking for.

Gone forever?

All in all, we simply can’t have radio silence if we still want this fandom to thrive! The community is strong, but we would be lying if we didn’t acknowledge the diminishing interest in Poptropica. But is that anyone’s fault? No fan is to blame for slowly moving away from something that doesn’t update, retain relevance, and well… answer questions!

I know this request sounds vague, but it can be hard to pin down exactly what can save this game. It’s not that Poptropica isn’t fun anymore, or that characters aren’t appealing, or that storylines don’t pull you in. I think that a huge portion of the problem stems from how things are currently being run! Fans are left in the dark far too often. The Creators’ Blog should be a way for those behind Poptropica to reach out to its fanbase, to answer questions, and to collectively find ways to improve the game.

Remember that this post isnโ€™t meant to bash the Creators, but instead voice the opinions and suggestions of fans. We all want Poptropica to be as awesome as possible!

So, what are your thoughts? Do you agree with our list? What do you want to see more often on the Creators’ Blog? Be sure to let us know what other Pop Petitions we should make as well!

Silver Wolf - Transparent BackgroundMoving on however, I do have some bad news to add to the end of this post…

Silver Wolf has decided to leave the PHB, a choice that no one can blame her for, of course. Her passion for both blogging and Poptropica has lessened, as it does for many fans over time (not to mention how time consuming preparing for senior year of high school can be!). Still, what she brought to the community was thoughtful posts, creativity, and kindness!

I’ve personally become close friends with Wolfy over both of our author careers, and we started blogging around the same time. She will certainly be missed by all the PHB authors, but don’t worry too much! She will still be active on Discordย and I may just force her to never leave DeviantArt.

She assures us that she will not be completely leaving the community, and will be sure to leave her own blog up. It was an honor for her to work on the PHB and she appreciates everything that this fandom gave her, including amazing friends and experiences!

Top 5 Picks

Pisces by ArtisticAsianBunny

ArtisticAsianBunny - Pisces

Another wonderful piece from this artist! The lighting is really immersive and the colors go great with the underwater setting. Do the fish really need to be prettier than me though? Anyway, the scene feels magical and the detail to Red Panda’s surroundings brings everything together. It’s cool to see artists stepping out of their comfort zones and trying new things, because that’s the only way to improve! Anyone else a Pisces? Find her DeviantArt here.

Coral Reef by Fierce Flyer

Fierce Flyer - Coral Reef

Super cool! The sketchy style and bright colors make this piece look playful and full of adventure! The quick brushstrokes remind me of ocean waves and provide a pretty decent sense of movement. The vibrant lighting makes for a cheerful mood and gives life to the plants. Fierce Flyer looks ready to explore! I kinda want more water themed islands now too, what do you guys think? Find his DeviantArt here, and of course check out his posts right here on the PHB.

Scuba Diving Purple Seagull by Purple Seagull

Purple Seagul - Scuba Diving Purple Seagul

Very nice! The bright colors really capture your attention, but still don’t hurt the eye too much. The neon vibe is super interesting and I love Purple Seagull’s design! The scene definitely makes me want to go scuba diving! All the blue makes everything look cool and calm. Find Purple Seagull often in the comments section.

Queen Naiad by JordynGowens (AKA Gentle Dolphin)

queen_naiad_by_jordyngowens-dcfogi6

It may not be merโ€“Mayย anymore, but this drawing still definitely fits our theme! Modeled after a mermaid costume made by It’s a Poptropica Blog, lots of thought was sure put into this character. Not only is this well drawn, but even a bit of backstory was described by the artist. The bubbles make for a simple, but still interesting background and the blue colors really pop! Find her DeviantArt here.

Poseidon Pop Worlds Style by SuperGrape1

SuperGrape1 - Poseidon Pop Worlds Style

This one is a bit simple compared to others, but still a nice drawing nonetheless! The colors are spot on, matching our beloved Greek god perfectly. And I must say, Poseidon has to be the best mascot for this month’s theme! A wonderful choice for this illustration. Who is your favorite Poptropica deity? Find her DeviantArt here.

Honorable Mentions

We were just a bit short on artwork this month compared to others, so we don’t have honorable mentions to share, but that doesn’t mean these submissions weren’t awesome! Be sure to keep sending us your creations, because we love featuring Poptropicans with such amazing talent. ๐Ÿ˜€

July: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Worlds houses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that monthโ€™s theme. So what is July’s theme? July’s theme isโ€ฆ

Blogs & Fans!

July is the PHB’s anniversary month, and that means more than our annual award livestream! It’s a huge occasion, and it baffles my mind how long this site has been running. Though we’ve lost authors along the way, it’s sites like this one that keep the Poptropica fanbase thriving! The fans are what have held the game up all these years, so I think it’s time to celebrate that in Community Creations!

So, what can you submit? Draw some cool group illustrations of PHB (or other blogs) authors! Write a “Pop 5” style post about your favorite parts of your favorite blogs! Create Poptropica costumes of what you think the ultimate fan looks like! Even write songs or poems dedicated to what makes Poptropica so great. You might be wondering… is this month’s theme an excuse just to let us PHB authors get some fan art out of you guys? Well… I have the right to remain silent on that.

And for your inspiration, a major throwback:

When You Meet Your Favorite Superhero by Gentle Dolphin akaย JordynGowens

Gentle Dolphin aka JordynGowens - When You Meet Your Favorite Superhero

If you couldn’t tell, this drawing is a reference to Wonder Woman’s appearance on Greek Sea Odyssey Island. Big DC fans were psyched to see her, I’m sure, so I bet they’d especially love this piece. The coloring is super accurate and the line-art is crisp, primarily on the drawing’s subject of course. Wonder Woman looks strong and confident in that pose! And the fans’ emotion is well depicted. Great detail! Find her DeviantArt here.

Heroes of Greek Mythย by epiphxny

epiphxny - Heroes of Greek Myth

You can easily tell that a lot of work went into this piece! The lighting is fantastic and makes the heroes look like their glowing with power and confidence. The coloring is simple and soft, and I love the style that the Poptropicans are drawn in. Greek myths have always been a big part of Poptropica, from the original Mythology Island to the more recent Greek Sea Odyssey Island. It’s certainly a fan favorite subject! From left to right in the illustration, we have Perseus, Atalanta and Hercules, all from stories you might be familiar with. Amazing work!ย Find his DeviantArt here.

World Guy: The First on the Forceย by Sporty Boa

Sporty Boa - World Guy The First on the Force

I think the similarities between Poptropica’s World Guy and Marvel’s Captain America can’t be ignored, and this drawing highlights those perfectly. In this comparison, the artist mimicked a well known Marvel poster, but with our beloved PoptropiCon hero in center stage! This entire idea was really neat and well executed. The pose and other details are super accurate, as seen in this side by side image. While Greek heroes tend to be fan favorites, PoptropiCon is also chock full of some amazing supers. Wonderful drawing! Find his Twitter here.

Marvel Madnessย by Spotted Eagle

Spotted Eagle - Marvel Madness

What a line up! Marvel’s popularity these days is anything but quiet, and this collage of characters is a perfect example of that superhero adoration. With a mixture of editing and in game costumes, this assortment really brings to life what some of pop culture’s most well known (and less known) heroes would look like as Poptropicans. Can you recognize everyone? Who kinda wants another superhero oriented island in Poptropica Worlds now? Nice work! Friend them with the username dad34853.

Pretzel Break in Super Power Islandย by ChibiNeko-Lover

ChibiNeko-Lover - Pretzel Break in Superpower Island

Super Power Island is obviously a great choice for this month’s theme. And we have to remember that superheroes need a break every now and then too! You can’t tell me that you didn’t just wanna stop and eat a pretzel when you got stuck on this island. Anyway, the composition of this drawing is wonderful, the camera angle adds lots of interest! Not to mention all the detail in every inch of the piece and the cool, bright colors. Great work! Find her DeviantArt here.

With summer coming up for most Poptropicans, a cool down is needed. Whether that be a pool party with friends or a full on beach vacation, water is the key element! And Poptropica doesn’t shy away from the ocean. So, for this month, make something related to water! Or, in more fun terms, under the sea!

Ex Super Villains Doing not so Super Thingsย by CrazyPaintbrush

CrazyPaintbrush - Ex Super Villains Doing Not So Super Things

This is super cute! I snickered a bit when I saw this, because it’s really funny to imagine all these big bad villains doing… well, “not so super things.” From the detail in Copy Cat’s book (How to Survive Roommates)ย  to the cool outfit changes, this piece was very thoughtful! If I had flying powers, I think I would use it a good 90% of the time to avoid traffic. Totally cool and funny!ย Find her DeviantArt here.

  2. Does anyone know if Mordred is good with trading? He seems like he’d be good atย BARD-er.
  3. What did Poseidon say to Hades (Mythology Island) after he saw pomegranates for the first time? “HADESย look pretty neat!”

  11. What animation company created Shrek in the Poptropica worldย STEAMWORKSย animation!

Welp, I told you guys I was a sucker for puns! A bunch of these are pretty darn creative and certainly made me smile. Another Wild Adventureย by ANNE14TCO and BlazingAngel123

ANNE14TCO and BlazingAngel 123 - Another Wild Adventure

Wow, we haven’t seen many collabs in this series! The combination of talent makes for one amazing piece. The shading, coloring detail, etc. rocks, but the facial expressions are what really made me laugh! I think most people can easily see their own Poptropican in this situation. Plus, it’s super cool to see a screenshot sort of style! The movement depicted is great, so it really feels like a photo was taken of the chaos. Find Anne’s DeviantArt here andย BlazingAngel’s DeviantArt here. The former mainly did the coloring and the latter mainly did the lineart!

World’s Craziest Food Fightย by Red Tomato

Red Tomato - World's Craziest Food Fight

A photo booth entry is always a nice change of pace! And this one is no exception. With all the chaos in this picture, it’s pretty goofy. I especially like how Red Tomato looks so calm in the foreground while everyone else is practically battling to the death! Have any of you had a food fight in school? Find Red Tomato often in the comments section.

ย i bet yall werent expecting THIS by Napstachill

Napstachill - i bet yall werent expecting THIS

I… will never be able to get over this drawing. I always knew Zeus was the god of thunder but I never knew he had thunder thighs too! Look at his smug face! It’s hilarious and like the title implies… unexpected. Though the drawing is a bit dated by now, I think it holds up to the test of time. It’s pretty simple, but well made nonetheless. Pop Petitions

Pop Petition: What We Want From Islands

Pop Petition Header

Yep, Pop Petitions is making its rounds again because lately, fans have faced some disappointment. We’ve had multiple posts voicing concerns about Pop Worlds, but right now we are going to focus on the main feature Poptropica has to offer: islands.

Islands and their adventures are what Poptropica is all about, so that’s what the Creators should really be putting effort into, right? Poptropica is aย game,ย so game play really counts. However, some of the game play in Poptropica Worlds has been lacking, as we’ve talked about in previous island reviews.

#1: In-Depth Storylines

Shouldn’t this request speak for itself? The storyline of an island is arguably its most important aspect. We’ve seen some captivating tales in the past, from Ghost Story to Arabian Nights and other fan favorites, but recent islands have been less than enthralling.

siep3poster2

Though this is a kids game, it is still important to keep the players attention. With a story that leaves you on the edge of your seat, a player is dying to solve the puzzle and keep the adventure going. Without this, an island can seem like a chore. Things can’t be too rushed, nor can they be too drawn out.

An example that most can agree on that is lacking in storyline would probably be Crisis Caverns. While it contains an interesting idea and some cool scenes, there is no development or intriguing plot twists. The whole story seems a bit flat, which is especially disappointing when looking back at some of Poptropica Original’s in depth adventures. Further thoughts on this are expressed in our Crisis Caverns Review.

#2: Gameplay Itself

With Poptropica’s click-based controls, advanced motion is certainly limited. As previously said, the storyline is what makes most islands interesting. Still, theย gameplay is a big part of aย game, and it seems a bit lacking in some islands.

zeusboss

Some elements are definitely not bad, but also overused (chase scenes being the most notable). Minigames like these can be irritating on a slow computer, for sure, but also don’t present aย huge challenge. In fact, many people report glitches in their playthroughs, resulting in having to play minigames all over again. But what else is new?

Though cut scenes and minigames are fine, I do think Poptropica should focus on one thing in particular: puzzles. Being a kids game (that is supposed to be educational), I believe puzzles would be a lot more beneficial as gameplay elements. We’ve certainly seen these before, in islands like Nabooti and Spy Island, but they don’t always get the credit they deserve, nor are they utilized to the best of their ability.

#3: Character Development

Characters are also a big part of the Poptropica world, resulting in countless pieces of fan art and fan fiction. We all have our favorite villains and side characters, but some aren’t built upon too much. There are our main four villains, along with some other diamonds in the rough, but other than that many characters are fairly 2D.

characters

We do see development in some classic Poptropica Original adventures, but it has really gone down hill in recent islands. While this does allow fans to build up backstories and orientations with their own headcanons, we don’t get confirmation about theories or personality traits.

Character development is a big part of getting a player to actually care about the people and plot. Adding depth to even a minor Poptropican through their dialogue, significance, appearance, etc. can add layers of interest and detail. We’d love to see more of that so our fan fiction can be accurate and consistent!

#4: Easter Eggs & Interaction

Though not necessary, easter eggs and little interactive features can spark a lot of interest. We actually got to see a lot of this in Greek Sea Odyssey, from Wonder Woman’s appearance to funny treasure chests and quotes. And that’s what I like to see, no matter how small!

minotaurdisco

It may not add to storyline or character development that much, but it still enhances the entire environment. Since exploring every clickable object isn’t necessary to complete an island, it can make a dedicated player feel rewarded when a secret is found. These features can be hilarious and references to other fandoms can make fans feel great.

It was amazing to see these features in such a recent island, especially since they’ve been a bit rare in the past. However, it is important that they do not detract from the storyline! Way more effort needs to be put into the main adventure before extra elements are added.

#5: Visuals, Audio, & Dialogue

Thankfully, Poptropica’s visuals and audio have been stunning for a long time. Though some dialogue can be lacking, even it can be quite funny. Still, recent departures of well known Creators can be worrying when it comes to the preservation of these elements.

nightcrawlers

Visuals, audio, and dialogue are key in making a player really feel a part of a game. Though no more important than the storyline, they can make or break the mood of an environment. Wouldn’t it be weird if music from Monster Carnival was playing on Galactic Hot Dogs Island? *shivers*

There isn’t much to complain about here, because Poptropica is often breathtaking in this category. But let’s keep it that way! With the decline of other gaming elements, it is vital that these don’t go downhill too.

Remember that this post isn’t meant to bash the Creators, but instead voice the opinions and suggestions of fans. We all want Poptropica to be as awesome as possible!

So, what are your thoughts? Do you agree with our list? What do you want to see in future Poptropica Worlds Islands? Be sure to let us know what other Pop Petitions we should make as well!
