Arabian Nights Island

No more episodes & Arabian Nights launch dates

Happy new year, Poptropicans! Hope you’re enjoying the fresh new PHB header with my Poptropican’s new look (plus, I drew a new avatar for it too)! 😀

Anyway, 2015 has only just begun, but already there’s Poptropica news to talk about. After a year of episodic islands, it looks like Poptropica will be reverting back to stand-alone full islands after wrapping up PoptropiCon and Arabian Nights around March! (thanks to Samwow5 for the pic)

QN39rd4

Speaking of Arabian Nights, the Creators originally tweeted that Episode 2: Lair of Thieves (see our preview here) would be coming out to non-members on Dec 30th (that’s if you ignore their even earlier tweet), but it turns out they’ve rescheduled the public launch to Jan 8th:

Meanwhile, members can look forward to Episode 3 of Arabian Nights (title yet to be determined) around Feb 26th. That is, if Zeus here can still be trusted. 😉

And lastly, perhaps as a follow-up to her totally snazzy PHB tribute, Poptropica Creator Dr. Lange also drew a little something for the team at Poptropican Awesomeness, where two of our PHB authors (Blake & Slippery Raptor) also blog. Check it out:

Anyway, that’s all for now! Poptropica’s had a great 2014, which you can read all about in Slippery’s 2014 rewind post here. Hope everyone’s having a wonderful new year so far! 😀

Blast from the Past

Reflections on an awesome year

Hi Gs,

I’m really surprised that it’s already the new year. One year ago, I made a post wishing everyone a happy new year. I told everyone to “live their dreams in 2014”. I feel so excited for 2015. This is a year, for me at least, to really start producing some quality content. I want this not only to be a community about the game “Poptropica” but the people in the community. I’m really confident in the community and I feel like we can do some awesome stuff. I also kept tradition originating from my original post and made a new profile picture for the new year. Look below to see how much I’ve grown.

progressPoptropican

I touched on this in a recent post, but it’s just so true that I need to say it again- It’s crazy to think that two years ago, that was the best I could do. And not only that, but you guys have gotten a lot more creative since then. The POPCORN opened up a lot of possibilities for fan art and stories, and I feel like we should start an arts community for the PHB (perhaps deviantART?) so that you guys can express yourself along with me. We’ve seen some amazing artists out there, way better than I can do. We’ve found amazing storytellers, who can spin stories like the back of their hands.

I really want to try something new. The Poptropicast was a failed idea to say the least. If any of you can remember, I tried to start a Poptropica podcast last summer. It sort of never really started and I was a bit embarrassed at my inability to do it.

Now, I feel like I could do it, but not alone. I’m going to need help. Someone out there in the community is perfect for the job of a co-host for the Poptropicast. I’m going to find that person. More info on the contest will be coming soon. Until then, a logo for something anticipated

2014 Rewind: Poptropica Islands & Big Events!

2014 rewind

Hey guys! 2014 is coming to an end, and of course, what better way to wrap up than with a recap of Poptropica over the past year? Here we go!

Part One: Islands

Let’s start off with Poptropica’s islands! This year, 5 islands were released. Poptropica also celebrated the rise of a new episodic island system — instead of full islands, islands were divided into parts called episodes. Also, a couple of classic islands were transformed into SUIs (sound-updated islands): Mythology and Shrink Ray. Now, let’s get into the recap of islands released in 2014!

Monster Carnival Island

After 6 long years, Poptropica’s most awaited island finally showed up in February 2014. SInce Monster Carnival was known as a myth in Poptropica for years, this island has always been the talk of the town for years. Monster Carnival Island was one of the easiest islands this year, and the visuals, music, story and characters were all awesome! I just wish it was a little harder, and that Ringmaster Raven was made a bit more despicable. Anyway, it was a great start to the year!

Survival Island

The second Poptropica island this year came as a surprise for the whole Poptropica community: for the first time ever, an Island would be divided into episodes! The best thing about episodic islands is that it leaves the players wondering what will happen next. Survival Island introduced a brand new Poptropica villain, Myron Van Buren, and the ending was brilliant. The island had awesome visuals, a great story, and excellent music to accompany the story. Last but not the least, the island was really unexpected with MVB and the man hunt because we know it’s Survival — man vs nature! Great job, Creators! What I didn’t like was that our blimp was destroyed. How sad. 😦

Mission Atlantis Island

We’re halfway there! So, what about this island? Well, as players become curious about the lost city of Atlantis, we concluded that this was connected to the aliens from Lunar Colony. Although we had no villain to fight in this island, we discovered the ancient underwater city of Atlantis saw some aquatic animals. At first, I thought this island would be a flop, but it wasn’t so bad towards the end. This underwater adventure was really “out of this world”! Even though this island just had three episodes, the adventure was once-in-a-lifetime.

Mission Atlantis Game Play #3

PoptropiCon Island

This brought a new island theme to Poptropica: fantasy & conventions. The first episode of PoptropiCon was really crazy. Just for a ticket, we had to disguise ourselves, and then find a new way to enter the convention center. The second episode was really awesome (I’d give it a 9/10) – and the ending was quite a twist! The final episode isn’t out yet, but we do know Omegon will attack the convention and it’s up to us (and perhaps the Mighty Action Force) to save the day! The battle will start sometime in 2015, so be ready to hero up! Plus, it was pretty cool that the San Diego Comic Con was happening around the same time as this island’s planning stages.

Arabian Nights Island

The winning idea for the Create Your Dream Island Contest is finally on Poptropica! This island is based on 1001 Nights (also known as Arabian Nights), a famous Arabian literary work of the ancient times. Since the announcement of the winner, players were very excited to see this island. I thought it really reflected the culture and life of Arabs back in the old times – I loved the part where the thief couldn’t get the camel to move, so he fed it a banana! The second episode was even better: the characters, puzzles, music and story were all just amazing. It just makes me wonder, where did the prisoner and Vizier go? Were they really killed? Anyway, I’m very excited to meet the genie in 2015!

Arabian Nights Game Play #3

That’s it for 2014’s islands! Thanks to the Creators for an awesome year of awesome islands. 🙂

Part Two: Timeline of Big Events

Alright, now for the second half of this 2014 recap – looking back onto the biggest Poptropica (and PHB) events of the year! Without further ado, let’s get right into it.

Poptropica Magazines: Revival

At the end of 2013, we announced that we’d be reviving our popular Poptropica fan magazines, then known as The Poptropican’s 911 (for all your Poptropica emergencies), which ran for a year in 2009-2010. And we delivered on that promise this year, with four issues in the first half of the year and six in the second due to changes in the publication schedule and giving the series a delicious new name: The POPCORN. It’s had a good run, but it’s come to an end – at least for now. You can read the issues any time on the PHB’s Magazines page!

Poptropica Labs

a5704-poplabsIn January, Poptropica announced a brand new feature allowing Poptropicans to create islands of their own: Poptropica Labs! This awesome feature was released exclusively to members, but many have agreed that it was awesome. Some players have even called it “Poptropica’s Minecraft with a twist”! You can read HPuterpop’s review of the original Labs here.

New PopTopics Books

scaryMonstersShortly after the excitement of Labs, Poptropica announced two new PopTopics books! This Poptropica book series explores the real-life facts behind the islands. There were two new PopTopics books — Scary Monsters and Wild West. Scary Monsters (pictured) tackles the myths and legends about the world’s cryptids and creepy creatures like vampires and zombies, while Wild West takes you back to the American frontier with cowboys, horses and bandits!

PHB’s Valentine’s Day Party

valentines2014The PHB threw a whopping 6 parties this year, and the first of them was on Valentine’s Day! Several PHB authors and many more Poptropicans showed up to spread the love on Valentine’s, and everyone said that it was a lot of fun. Check out the recap here.

Poptropica App on iOS & Android

popappFinally! Poptropica has gone mobile! In March, Poptropica announced and released the official Poptropica app for the iPad, then for iPhone two months later, in May. There was also a lot of excitement over an elusive iPad/iPhone handheld item. Last but not the least, six long months later, Poptropica was finally made available to Android in November. Everyone can play Poptropica anywhere!

PHB’s 11 Million Hits Party

11m party recapAlso in March, the PHB hit the milestone of 11 million views! Of course, being the PHB, we had to have a Poptropica party. Between Multiverse hopping, Doodle Race games, and chatting it up on the PHC, it was a lot of fun – check out the recap! Plus, we also raffled off 11 monstrous prizesrare costumes from Monster Carnival!

Mysterious Disappearance of Shark Boy

In mid-April, Poptropicans began to notice Shark Boy slowly being alienated from the Poptropica world, and it began with the changing of his name into “Shark Guy”. Reporting our findings here on the PHB led to even more eradication of Shark Boy’s existence. You can read all about it in the PHB article titled Mystery of Shark Boy. You’ll be missed, Sharky. 😦

Poptropica Comics

pop comicsIn May, Poptropica released a brand new featureoriginal Poptropica comics starring two mismatched boys named Jorge and Oliver who end up exploring peculiar islands in the world of Poptropica. Poptropica comics are updated daily, but are currently on a hiatus, promising to return again in 2015. Plus, there’s now a Poptropica Comics app!

PHB’s 12 Million Hits Party

phb12mILLIONThree months after the last party, the PHB reached 12 million hits. Yay! Of course, the celebration called for another PHC/Poptropica party, and this time, it was joined by the Season 1 Finale Livestream of HPuterpop’s Poptropican Portraits series – a successful drawing series with over 100 Poptropican portraits done this year!

Poptropica Sticker Album

sticker coverThough its cover was created years ago, the Poptropica Sticker Album was only made available in July. This book contains over a thousand stickers, each with their own cool little fact! Awesome, right? You can get it for $11.69 on Amazon or your nearest bookstore (if they stock it) to enjoy the stickers!

PHB’s Sixth Birthday Party

PHB6 recapAnother successful year has come to pass for the best, the greatest and the coolest blog ever — the PHB! We celebrated our sixth year with a party (of course) and as always, that involved hanging out on the PHC, jumping around Poptropica’s Multiverse rooms, and sharing music on plug.dj. Here’s to more years to come – long live the PHB!

PHB’s 13 Million Hits Special: Daily Pop Archive

thirteen milThirteen million?! Seriously? 13 million alright. Well, we laid off on the partying this time, but we celebrated with some other special things: 1) the PHB finally built up its very own Daily Pop Sneak Peek Archive, with each and every DP sneak peek and caption ever to exist; 2) we surveyed our readers to get to know everyone better; and 3) we gave a shoutout to 13 lucky Poptropica fansites!

Poptropica Land

PopLand_TempImageIn August, Poptropica Labs got a major upgrade in the form of Poptropica Land! With an ancient hammer, we had the power to create and destroy our lands at will, and by mining Poptanium, we could unlock more things! It was exclusively released to members at first, but in October, the Creators released Poptropica Land to all with several theme challenges and posted their favorites (including Slanted Fish’s dream home!). In 2015, everyone will get to play the next reincarnation: Poptropica Realms!

Poptropica’s First Music Album

volume1In September, Poptropica released their first-ever music album! The first volume of this album contains music from different sound-updated islands, but with a unique sound not heard in-game. These MP3s are all instrumental tracks. You can buy the album from Amazon or from the iTunes Store. Rumor has it that Poptropica will have more volumes soon!

Poptropica’s 7th Birthday + PHB Party

7th pop bdayAlso in September, Poptropica finally turned seven! Yay! Continuing their birthday tradition, Poptropica released a color-changing balloon with the number “7” on it and had their annual balloon scavenger hunt for the seventh year birthday costume – which had no cakes this year. The PHB threw another party to celebrate Poptropica’s seventh year and the 15th birthday of PHB author Samwow5! We inflated our seventh year balloons as we grooved to the songs playing at Sam’s plug.dj station, and it was a blast.

Forgotten Islands for 3DS

forgotten islands 3dsIn October, Poptropica’s Forgotten Islands video game was finally made available to the Nintendo 3DS, boasting stereoscopic 3D Poptropica graphics for the first time ever! Forgotten Islands is also available on iOS devices. If you need help or just want to see what the game’s like, check out the PHB’s written walkthough – it’s loaded with pictures!

PHB’s Christmas Party 2014

popchristmas editLess than two weeks ago, the PHB threw its last party of the year: a fun-filled Poptropica Christmas party! Everyone had a great time hopping between Multiverses, chatting on the PHC, and jiving along to Christmas carols on plug.dj. Check out our recap post – this one even contains a video to encapsulate the goings-on of the PHC, a place where many PHB readers regularly hang out, so go check it out: you might just have fun.

That’s it for a wonderful year on Poptropica and the PHB! Next year’s going to be full of surprises and great updates, I’m sure. Are you excited as we are for 2015?

Happy New Year!

-from the PHB. 🙂

PHB Specials

PHB 15M Special: Poptropica Music Video for Soundless Islands!

Hey Poptropicans – as a special treat for visiting this blog and helping us reach the milestone of 15 million hits, I created a little something for everyone: a Poptropica non-SUI music video, matching songs from pop culture to islands in Poptropica that don’t have their own soundtracks (yet)! I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. 😀

Each music segment lasts 15 seconds, for our 15M hits. Now, you might pair these islands with different songs (feel free to share in the comments!), but if you like these tunes or just want to know why I picked them, read on – you can also click on the song titles below to hear them on YouTube.

Early Poptropica Island: Lollipop by MIKA

Dark pits aside, Poptropica’s first island is a fun, bouncy adventure that gets the player a feel for the game – so why not a catchy tune? Plus, ‘lollipop’ has ‘pop’ in it, just like the island’s name.

Shark Tooth Island: Jaws Theme by John Williams

The great Booga shark is terrorizing the locals, and what better accompaniment than the soundtrack to a shark movie? It’s got suspense, but not without a little jaunty sub-tune thrown in.

Super Power Island: Discord by Eurobeat Brony

Despite being a fan-made My Little Pony mix, this is a fun song about villainy, which is rampant on Super Power – and it’s got deliciously evil laughter mixed in with cries of discord and anarchy.

Spy Island: Another One Bites the Dust by Queen

This classic gives the feel of the sly walk of a spy – perfect for the action and adventure of Spy Island, where you can feel like a boss for sneaking past guard dogs and avoiding lasers.

Nabooti Island: Circle of Life from The Lion King

Opening with cries in the Zulu language, this seems fitting for an island that takes place in Africa where we encounter jungles, animals, and other exciting life. (Even the Nabooti totem comes alive!)

Big Nate Island: Yakety Sax by Boots Randolph

In Big Nate’s world, we jump around in a cartoon realm chasing after comic strips, pulling pranks, and digging up a time capsule – and this goofy, recognizable melody embraces all sorts of shenanigans.

Astro-Knights Island: The Imperial March (Vader’s Theme) by John Williams

Ah, Star Wars. A galactic empire, a cyborg villain, a trapped princess – also elements of Astro-Knights! Darth Vader’s epic tune is a natural fit for our clashes with the robotic creatures of outer space.

Counterfeit Island: All the Rowboats by Regina Spektor

A beautiful ballad that sings of paintings forever trapped in their gold frames, this slightly-creepy sound clicks with the canvas caper. There’s even a verse about public mausoleums, like the tunnels we visit.

Reality TV Island: Best Day of My Life by American Authors

You’re competing in a reality TV show with a host of colorful characters – why wouldn’t this be the best day of your life? It’s all fun and games – until you get voted off, that is.

Skullduggery Island: The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything – cover by Relient K

Originally a silly song from VeggieTales, this pirate anthem might resonate with all the scallywags who feel like collecting enough doubloons for that Phoenix Warbird is just too much work. (It really is!)

Steamworks Island: Lone Star by Jim Guthrie

Traipsing through an abandoned steampunk world gets a little lonely, especially with only mechanical parts for company. This track from the indie game Sword & Sworcery kind of embodies that feeling.

Great Pumpkin Island: Linus and Lucy by Vince Guaraldi Trio

This upbeat piano composition made for Peanuts animated TV specials, including one that inspired this island, captures the childhood misadventures that follow Charlie Brown and his gang.

Cryptids Island: Scotland the Brave – cover by the Pipes & Drums of the Royal Tank Regiment

Bold and patriotic, this unofficial Scot anthem inspires brave souls to take on the world – in this case, the hunt for legendary beasts, including the Loch Ness Monster of Scotland.

Wild West Island: Wild and Free by Rednex

Yeehaw! An adventure with bucking broncos and moustachioed men awaits on the desert plains of Wild West Island, and it wouldn’t be complete without cowboys whistling in the name of freedom.

Wimpy Wonderland Island: Winter Wonderland – cover by August Burns Red

It’s a winter wonderland in the black-and-white world of Wimpy Wonderland, but with all the teen troubles hounding Greg Heffley, this calls for a rockier version of the classic Christmas carol.

Red Dragon Island: Tokyo by Owl City

This Magic Tree House tale takes place in Edo of ancient Japan, which in our modern day is Tokyo – and all the synthpop sounds seem to bring home the fact that we’re far from home.

Mystery Train Island: In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg

This recognizable tune that starts out slow, then quickens its pace is perhaps the perfect accompaniment for a mystery case – or for pressuring people to work faster. Either way, it works.

Game Show Island: Istanbul (Not Constantinople) – cover by They Might Be Giants

It’s a swinging song about a changing world, a little like the robot revolution that has taken over this island – plus, we even visit Istanbul (not Constantinople) for one of the game shows!

Ghost Story Island: Always With Me (Itsumo Nando Demo) from Spirited Away

Bittersweet but comforting, this melody from the Japanese animated film Spirited Away could represent the complicated union between Fiona and Valiant, even in life after death.

S.O.S Island: Let It Go (from Frozen) – cover by Pentatonix

Surely everyone has tired of hearing the original by now, so we’ll go Pentatonix’s impeccable cover. On S.O.S., we dive into frigid waters in a ship, so it’s safe to say “the cold never bothered me anyway”.

Vampire’s Curse Island: Finger Back by Vampire Weekend

Come on, the band has ‘vampire’ in its name. In any case, this fast-paced number intones tribulations that could be compared to roughing it up in the spooky spaces of Bram’s castle.

Twisted Thicket Island: The Fox by Ylvis

What does the fox say? This twisted thicket is just teeming with mystical wildlife, so it seems the strange proposed animal sounds in this viral song would not be amiss here.

Wimpy Boardwalk Island: A Little Vacation by Tiny Little Planets (from Dog Days)

From the soundtrack of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie Dog Days, which inspired this island, A Little Vacation brings us to the summer boardwalk with games, beaches, and of course, Greg’s problems.

Lunar Colony Island: The Adventure by Angels & Airwaves

Life’s waiting to begin in an alien realm, and tracking that down was an astronomical adventure in itself. Space-rock sounds and out-of-this-world lyrics suit this cosmic experience well.

Super Villain Island: Monster by Skillet

Here we infiltrate the dreams of four of Poptropica’s worst villains to see what evil powers make them tick – the monsters inside that have ruled their ugly rage.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Island: Oompa Loompa – cover by Primus & the Fungi Ensemble

Oompa Loompas always have a wise word to put in, don’t they? Listen to them and you may just avoid the pitfalls of all that could possibly go wrong when you’re in a room made of candy.

Zomberry Island: Radioactive by Imagine Dragons

This is it, the zombie apocalypse is upon us – and as always, it’s up to us to save the day (well, night). Going through dark tunnels and seeing the city in ruins may leave our systems feeling ready to blow.

Night Watch Island: Let’s Go to the Mall by Robin Sparkles (from How I Met Your Mother)

Let’s go to the mall… today! Working the night shift comes with its own benefits: we get to play around in the mall when no one else is looking, and best of all, we get our own Segway. Time to jam.

Back Lot Island: Larger Than Life by Backstreet Boys

Lights, camera, action! Movie characters are always larger than life because they’re fixed up for the big silver screen – but the truth is, there’s a lot more that goes into production than meets the eye.

Anyway, that is all 29 classic islands without their own soundtrack, that now have music from pop(tropica) culture to back them up! What song choices would you give these islands? What about the SUIs (sound-updated islands)? Leave a comment and let us know!

Thank you for 15 million hits on the Poptropica Help Blog! ❤

App

Hold your horses, there are Poptropica English apps!

Hey Poptropicans! Are you smarter than a fifth grader?

Although it doesn’t seem to have been mentioned anywhere, there’s a Poptropica English app out there for iOS devices – and it’s created by Pearson Education, the company that owns Poptropica. It’s targeted to 6-11 year-olds and is free on the App Store, but comes with in-app purchases.

The game is populated with Poptropica characters and contains mini-games such as City Hub, Word Factory, Word Race, and Word Tower. If you’re looking to brush up on elementary-level English vocabulary, or know someone who might want to, check it out!

UPDATE: There’s another one! Thanks to PHB reader Why are you reading my name for the tip. It’s also by Pearson, and it’s called Our Discovery Island: Phonic Tricksters. You can get it on the App Store or Google Play for free, but it does contain in-app purchases.

In Phonic Tricksters, the Tricksters (masked Poptropicans) are stealing English letter-sounds (phonemes) and you can catch them by taking photos with your phone camera. This game is for ages 4 and up. Unlike the other app, this one doesn’t seem to explicitly say the characters are Poptropicans.

In other news, the PHC (Poptropica Help Chat) recently had a (hopefully more eye-pleasing) makeover! If you haven’t already, check out the PHB’s Christmas party 2014 recap, which includes a video introduction to the PHC community and the things we get up to. Think of it as the PHC trailer. 😉

Also, I’ve changed my Poptropican’s look, which you may see around various places, including the new PHB Twitter header. The maroon hair matches my scarf! Rad. 😎

slantedfish toss avatar3

Plus, the PHB recently hit 15 million views! Stay tuned for a special treat… 😀
