Unity and the future of Poptropica

Unity. Unity is a hugely popular game engine for 3D games and apps. It has been used to create games like Kerbal Space Program, Monument Valley, I Am Bread, Crossy Road — the list goes on. It’s a huge 3D indie game engine.

So, why do I bring this up?

Oh.

My Thoughts

So, before I chase this rabbit trail, I’d like to clarify something: Poptropica being 3D is not official information. Is it likely? Yes. Is it certain? No. Unity has been used before to make 2D games, but overall it’s known as a 3D engine. With the Daily Pops we’ve been seeing recently with 3D environments, it seems that this is the path Poptropica has chosen to pursue.

With that in mind, this update is bad news, 3D or not. The Unity web player does not work for Google Chrome, which isย the main browser of the internet. The main one. Unity was disabled a year ago because of security issues. If Poptropica goes with that, they’re cutting off their audience — big time. With the theme of accessibility that they’ve been pursuingย recently, this is a major slap in the face in that regard.

What else is wrong? Perhaps my largest concern about 3D is that Poptropica was founded on 2D grounds. That was their quirk, that’s what made them unique in times when 3D was the online world status quo (and still is). Instead of vague and cheaply made hexagonal 3D models, Poptropica had great art with a distinct and clear style. The controls were fresh, partly because the developers only knew 2D, and it created a unique and rich experience.

treebackground

Poptropica needs to have that edge. Online worlds have risen and fallen, but Poptropica has stayed constant and fresh because of the unique approach.

If Poptropica goes completely 3D, they lose some of that edge. Let me clarify, however, that from what we’ve seen from the Daily Pops, the “New Poptropica” does not appear to beย completely 3D. It shows 2D graphics on a 3D plane, similar to popular indie, Don’t Starve. Don’t Starve perpetuates a storybook atmosphere, and it works for that type of game — but again, Poptropica has been built on 2D and it shouldย stay that way.

Those are my two cents. Along with cutting off a large portion of Poptropica’s audience, the switch to Unity could destroy Poptropica’s unique art style and completely sink the company. What do you think of the change? While 3D might sound cool at first, look at it objectively. What are the gains? What are the losses? Tell me in the comments.

TAFN.

UPDATE: Poptropica’s Skinny Moon has left a comment on this post addressing some of our concerns! Hereย is a snippet:

Hi there Poptropicans! Thanks for your feedback! Let me explain something to ease your minds: Weโ€™re confident that we are creating a new game experience that will be accessible to you, our current Pop players, which is our most important consideration. And while weโ€™re not ready to reveal any details yet, rest assured that weโ€™re staying true to the 2D Pop experience you love.

Please know there is SO MUCH going on behind the scenes, and we always have you, our passionate, dedicated players, in mind when weโ€™re working on all things Poptropica. Seriously.ย (…continued in the comments section!)

Whileย she hasn’t given a lot of detail about what to expect, at least we now know they’re sticking to “the 2D Pop experience”!

Cobalt’s Contest: Top Five Unreleased Items, Unleashed!

It is the year 201x. Doctor Cobalt sits down on his recliner, drinking the aged grape juice his robot servant gave him. He looks up at the screen embedded into the wall, scrolling through the PHB’s archives. ย “Hey,” he wonders aloud, upon noticing that the PHB had reached 24 million hits in April of 2016. “Did we ever celebrate that?” the old, discolored scientist asks, to no one in particular.

He getsย up from his beloved chair, placing the glass down on the table. Grabbingย a flashlight, the doctor proceeds to walk down the rickety spiral staircase. He shines the flashlight into a darkened room. “Well fellas, I finally found some use for all five of you.” The old doctorย laughs, taking the time-watch out of his lab coat.

Wihi, Cobalt here!ย A white blast of light hits him from behind.ย

Wait, you have to reschedule the Top Five Wanted Gaming Features for another day! I’ve come from the year 201x, and I’m here to tell you, you’ve got to do something for the PHB viewers for helping the blogย reach 24 million hits! How about a little contest?

Well, alright. I guess we can have a contest, but I’d like it to be a Top Five post at least…

CobaltItemContest.png

There is a lot of unreleased material without specific cards in Poptropica’s files, and some that are so mysterious and awesome, you almost feel compelled to speculate about them. From a never before seen Astro-Knight to a pepper gun, these items sure are fun! ๐Ÿ˜‰

So for starters, all these items appear on SUI and Non-SUI, probably meaning they’re having no plans on releasing these items. While they are awesome, I will admit, I do see no purpose for them anymore either. Though, let’s get on with it! (Trust me, I’m showing you the best of the best!)

Also, I didn’t steal these pictures from anyone, I just thought it would be easier to take screenshots from my Poptropican’s closet, check it out for yourself! My username is: CaptainSpencer

5. More-dred’s Mace

Screenshot at Apr 21 17-58-24.png

There’s more to Mordred after all! While the item name is called tBardStaff, it does look better with Mordred than with Binary Bard. (It makes the jester hat less repetitive, I’d say.) Other than on an ASG that’s been patched, I’m sure many of you haven’t seen this oneย before!

4. Secret Samurai

Screenshot at Apr 20 22-27-51

I’d imagine this samurai was planned to have been obtainable somewhere along the road during Red Dragon‘s development, but it never saw the light of day, always sneaking in the shadows of Poptropica’s files… Well, hopefully now this costume gets the gratitude it deserves! One thing is for sure, this armor is ancient!

3. Never-Seen Ninja

Screenshot at Apr 20 22-28-50

This ninja honestly would’ve been my favorite outfit back in the day. It looks like a mixture of all the ninja costumes possiblyย obtainable now, though. 5/5 Shurikenย Stars!

2. Pretty Pistol

Screenshot at Apr 20 22-27-29.png

That’s right, the villain with without a doubt the best character design (El Mustachio Grande!) was originally going to have an awesomeย gun. It’s called the pepper gun, but the pepper pistol sounds a lot cooler in my opinion. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, I get why they took it away; it really does distract from his outfit and he already has a pistol in his holster. Though, maybe they could’ve downscaled it a bit?

1. Rock and Roll All Knight!

Screenshot at Apr 20 22-29-07.png

This outfit is definitely boulder than all the other ones I showed you! While the emerald hammer is a whole different unreleased item of its own, I noticed the color palettes were similar, and I kind of fictionized it together.

So hopefully you all enjoyed this pop-in to a never before seen Poptropica past. I definitely think all of these were worthy items back in the day, but I guess releasing them now wouldn’t make much sense, would it? ๐Ÿ˜›

Now that the outfit preview is over, it’s time for a fun littleย contest!

Any amount of battle stars, credits (max. 5625), name and unreleased outfit (from this post) of your choosing is up for five luckyย commenters – all you have to do is submit a brief backstory to a Poptropican wearing said outfit. You also need to tell me the username, and if you win, I’ll pm you the account credentials on the PHC.

Example:

I’d like the secret samurai with the name Firstname Lastname, 5 battle stars, and the maximum amount of credits! I’d like the user to be FirstNamesSwagAccount. Here’s the story:

The secret samurai was named Sammy Samurai and had an awesome sword called the Sammy Sword. He slew all the bad guys and got babes with it.

Of course I’d like the submissions to be a little more serious. ๐Ÿ˜‰ The contest ends precisely a week from now! What outfit will you choose?

Well, back to the future for me! Until next post pops around, Poptropicanos…

Top Five Connections in Poptropica!

Wihi folks!

Yes, I am back at it again with theย white vans anotherย Top Five post. This time is focusing a bit on some awesome connections in Poptropica that youย more than likelyย aren’t aware of. Let’s begin!

5. The Costumizerย Shirt is wearable… kinda.

The newer (yet still rare) original Rock Star costume had a green shirt, yellow star, and just overall looks incredibly similar to the shirt on the (updated) Costumizer button, and leads me to believe it is intentionally the same one.

4.ย The Green Hawk

Thisย costume from Masks & Capes onย Super Power Island actually belongs to a superhero, the Green Hawk! The Green Hawk comes from one of the Poptropica toys.ย Also, I totally wore that outfit ironically at PoptropiCon, heh…

ironically.

3. Factual, Furry Monsters

Before Time Tangledย became a SUI, most areas had these bubbles for an iconic creature called the Fact Monster, which when clicked would offer factual information related to the area.ย Although there was never an official Fact Monster character in-game, this costume was leaked around the time Monster Carnival was rumored to come out (before 24 Carrot).

However, as we know, the leaked monster parts were recycledย onto a series ofย monster costumes.ย ย Now that’s a good way to make your hard work not go to waste!

2. Doctor… who?

Doctor SmartyPantsย – seen on a poster in PoptropiCon – feels almost too similar to our kid-testing doctor in the beloved Poptropica parody island, Mocktropica. Everyone seems to be a parody of someone in that island, so it makes sense the doctor would be as well. Despite the two being of different genders, I do feel this is super awesome if I’m right. ๐Ÿ˜€

Now it’s time for one connection you wouldn’t believe. We all know the gods of Poptropica only appeared in-game during and after Mythology Island… but what if I told you one god was there from the beginning?

1. Apollo statues

On Time Tangled, an Apollo statue appears in Ancient Greece. Well, it doesn’t say Apollo, but if you click on it, it does. The pose also references an iconic real-life classical Greek sculpture known as Apollo Belvedere, with one obvious difference: the Poptropican version is clothed.

Three years apart from each other, with no consistent storyline by any means, the same character appears again as a statue – on Mythology Island.

Yeh, I know it isn’t as drastic as ifย Myron Van Buren had first appeared on Early Poptropica (which did not happen), and this Apollo connectionย is just a popular Greek mythological characterย who incidentally had a minor role in two islands, but it is super cool…ย and a connection I doubt you knew. ๐Ÿ˜›

Wowie Spencey, two Top Five posts in a week, how good do you feel?

Amazing.

Well, until next post comes around!

Wibi!

Top Five Poppin’ Items We Wish Existed in Poptropica!

Hey folks, Cobalt here!

Poptropicanos, I’ve hopped on my blimp and traveled to the PHC (that’s our Poptropica Help Chat hangout) and beyond for answers… to ask the Poptropica community if they could have any item in Poptropica that doesn’t currently exist, what would it be?

pop items

I got some awesome answers, answers that I mostly agreed with, and I decided to compile my favorites right here in a top five list! Here we go!

#5: Boomerang

How awesome would it be to have an item that could knock other things down for you, and immediately come back to your Poptropicano? Sure, you can do something like this with the Realms hammer, but what about one for the rest of Poptropica?

Awesome idea, Draco! ๐Ÿ˜€

Screenshot at Apr 05 14-22-46

#4: Teleporter

Now trust me, this idea is awesome. Sometimes, walking from place to place just takes way too long, and we’re forced to pass through ads along the way. Islands like Arabian Nights, I would teleport happily. Ad teleporters are cool too, and have been known to exist if you know where to look (though we don’t want them getting patched!).

Regardless, it’s a lovely idea, and at certain times on an island’s quest, I only have to agree. Thanks for the idea, TechWizard! ๐Ÿ™‚

Screenshot at Apr 05 14-20-01.png

#3: Shoes

We’ve all seen the booted bandit, and we’ve all seen how spiffy footwear can look on a Poptropican. While big ones like that may look goofy, an optional shoe feature would be pretty sick. Great thought, SHSLDespair! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Screenshot at Apr 05 14-25-14

#2: Skateboard

This is actually my thought, but a skateboard. It wouldn’t really get in the way of speed, it could be the same pace as walking for all I care, but we need a skateboard, man! You press spacebar and it goes back into your hand. Now, while skateboards do exist, (ex. the teen in Early Poptropica), they aren’t functional for you or anybody else. Change that. Change that right now. ๐Ÿ˜ก

No, I’m just kidding. Though, any kind of travel would be cool in my opinion.

Here is my absolute favorite that I got, from our own HPuterpop. I was planning on putting this in a top five wanted game features post though to be fair, he interpreted it as an item card, and considering I had the same exact thought, I just had to put it in.

#1: Eye Changing Emotion Card

Screenshot at Apr 05 14-40-41

You mean no more ASG-ing for a specific eye emotion? Or glitching over it in general? Being able to display your eyes’ emotion besides the default actions in common rooms? Only sounds reasonable and logical, I can’t see that happening. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I definitely think all these picks are worth having in-game, what do you think? What’s an item you want in-game? Taco bout it below! ๐Ÿ˜›

The Monkey, the Map and the Dragon!

hiagain

Hey, guys. Slip here, and I’m back!

We have some real-life updates today, starting with Monkey Wrench! Good news for Android users, because it’s finally released on Android devices (and recently iOS)! If you need a guide on the island, check it out here!

monkey

We also have great news! The ย Mystery of the Map graphic novel was added to the list of New York Times’ bestsellers! It was recently ranked ย 4th on the list, but when I checked it again, it is now placed 5th. Congratulations to Kory and Jack Chabert! Buy the graphic novel here or read BT’s analysis here!

Some players are experiencing some difficulties in the newly-reopened Red Dragon Island. Is Red Dragon a prank all along? Well, the answer is no. Well, you could try clearing your cache or try playing on a different browser. If it doesn’t work, try to email Poptropica about it.

…and that concludes today’s updates! What do you think? Leave a comment!
