The Poppies 2019: Om Nom Nominations

July 6, 2019July 8, 2019 LJ

Hey Poptropicans, the pop-arazzi are here… and that means the Poppies!

🏆 What are the Poppies? 🏆

The Poppies are an annual Poptropica community awards event, hosted by Poptropica fans for Poptropica fans. This will be our fifth year celebrating, and as always, we welcome you to participate in the festivities and tell us where you think the spotlight deserves to shine in all things Poptropica.

First, we begin with the nomination round where you get to nominate your favorite picks for certain award categories. This round starts today (Saturday, July 6) and will end next Friday, July 12. It’ll be followed by a voting round, then culminate into a PARTY on the PHB’s birthday (July 26) — more details to come! But first, the om nom nominations…

Part 1: The Nomination Round

Today marks the start of the nomination round. Each award category will be announced below and followed by a brief description.

To keep the nominations a surprise, you’ll be putting your choices in our survey anonymously. However, you’re welcome to leave a comment in support of your choices. Maybe you’ll convince people to pick your faves, too!

This year’s 11 categories (to celebrate 11 years of the PHB!) are…

Poptropica Gameplay Awards

Funniest Character: Whether it’s a random NPC, a villain, or a hero, there have been many instances where a character cracks a joke that makes you chuckle just a bit. Who made you laugh out loud?

Worst Character: Poptropica is full of iconic characters, but not every character was great. Whether they brutally betrayed you or their personality just fell flat, which, in your opinion, was the worst of them all?

Most Underrated Island: We hear about our beloved Astro-Knights, Mythology, and Mystery Train Islands a lot, but is there an island with a great story and adventure that you feel just doesn’t get the attention it deserves? Nominate it!

Most Overrated Island: On the flip side of the above, what are the islands you think get too much praise that weren’t really all that great? Throw in your nominations!

Best Store Costume: Of all the amazing costumes Poptropica has released over the years, which one do you think was the best? There are hundreds to choose from, so make this count!

Cutest Pet: At the beginning of the year, the Pet Barn had its grand opening and we were introduced to five of the cutest critters in Poptropica: the puppy, kitten, bunny, lizard, and goat. And now just recently the pony has made it’s debut! (Note: Because of the limited options, all of them will automatically be nominated.)

Best Sidekick: Throughout our Poptropica adventures, we’ve had our fair share of sidekicks to help us along the way on our quests, Poptropican or not. Who was the most helpful and loyal by your Poptropican’s side?

Community Awards

Popular Poptropican: Many awesome Poptropicans make up our community, whether they’re frequent commenters, fan artists, fan bloggers, or just someone well known in the online Poptropica world. But who should we recognize as this year’s Popular Poptropican?

Best Fan Art of 2019: Many astounding masterpieces have been made throughout the year so far, but which one do you think deserves the title of “best”? We suggest searching for your favorite pieces of fan art in our DeviantArt group and Community Creations posts! (Please only nominate works created/published in 2019.)

Best Fan Video of 2019: Whether they’re personality-fueled playthroughs, helpful walkthroughs, or nostalgic discoveries, the internet has its share of Poptropica videos made by creative people. Which videos stand out to you? (Please only nominate videos published in 2019.)

Best Guest Post of 2019: The PHB staff encourages fans and readers to share their ideas on the blog by guest posting. In 2019, there have been a collection of great guest posts on the PHB from Poptropicans like you! Which ones did you most enjoy?

Once again, the nomination round starts now, so be sure to fill out our survey and let us know who/what you think is deserving of the awards! Please limit your nominations to a max of three per award. Also, you’re not required to nominate for every category, though it is encouraged! 😉

Remember, the voting round starts next Saturday on July 13, and next week’s poll options will be made up of this week’s most popular nominations. So, be sure to check back in a week to cast your votes, but for now…

📝 Make your nominations on our survey! 📝

Keep popping in to keep up with Poppies events throughout this month! 😀

Community Creations: June 2019

July 1, 2019July 1, 2019 Spotted Dragon

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the June recap for Community Creations! June’s theme was pride and the featured work is not in any particular order. Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Pride Month 2019 by ArtisticAsianBunny

Wonderful, colorful submission! With each character representing a different hue of the rainbow, I love the attention to the color here. The motion of everyone appropriately mimics that of a march, adding great movement to the piece. Distinct personalities are shown with unique poses and accessories as well. Great character designs! Find her DeviantArt here.

Pride Month Day 4: Cuddly Owl by WitchyArtistGal

So cute! All throughout June, this artist drew their OC’s in various pride fashion. Not only were the colors of the flags creatively incorporated to each outfit, but the numerous orientations featured shows great diversity. I particularly like this depiction of Cuddly Owl because of the blushing joy on her face! A simple but endearing series to say the least. Find her DeviantArt here.

Pride Batch by Criaha

Now talk about diversity! This month, Criaha took pride themed requests on their Tumblr, all of which are shown in the batch above (OC’s and headcannon characters alike). Like other submissions, the colors of numerous flags are well incorporated into fun outfits here. I find the variety particularly fantastic, with orientations, personalities, poses, etc. ranging greatly. The differences between the characters shows an excellent grasp on design and attention to detail. An amazing bunch of Poptropicans! Find her DeviantArt here.

Desiree by DJay-Rosi

Another sweet entry, huh? DJ started a pride series of their own this month, similarly featuring the orientations of many OC’s. Desiree here is quite the eye-catcher, with another expertly incorporated color scheme. The detailed outfit and bright pink lineart make the character really pop, and I love the sugary vibe. The swooping lines, shimmery look, and cute expression make this feel like a super energetic piece overall. A simple bust, but stunningly executed! Find their DeviantArt here.

Happy Anniversary MissE and Cri by NineTenOnetyOne

Loving these wholesome drawings! Showcasing the adorable Popsonas of two popular artists in the community, this celebratory drawing is perfect for pride month. The gift is straightforward, ~~but is far from straight~~ but certainly encompasses the importance of spreading love in our community. I love the joy in the expressions and the closeness of the characters! Totally precious dude. Find her DeviantArt here.

Super cute submissions! Enjoyed seeing all the colors this month. Keep showing your pride and spreading the love!

July: How do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is July’s theme? July’s theme is…

Technology & Social Media!

With the appearance of Blue Tooth on the Creators’ Blog, more frequent Twitter updates/interactions, and a new island on the horizon, I think this theme is pretty appropriate for the times. There’s no denying social media’s prevalence in our lives, and the dangers that it includes, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate its benefits! Technology is rapidly advancing and culture is constantly evolving, so of course Poptropica has been trying to keep up. But what that future may look like is up for debate?

No matter how Poptropica, or its Worlds counterpart evolves, social media and technology will always be a crucial part of the fandom experience. Soooo, bring it on! Send us your Poptropica memes, your hilarious gifs, the whole shebang! What would Dr. Hare’s Twitter feed look like? Draw us some of Shark Guy’s aesthetic Instagram posts. Would you follow Black Widow on DeviantArt? Draw, write, edit, and send us your applicable creations!

Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArt, Twitter, or Discord.
Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as 3 honorable mentions.
Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as you’d like!

I will always be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. Bonus points if you make a compelling description for your piece! While quality counts, I’m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so don’t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Poptropica Portfolio

Poptropica Portfolio: Abigail Grigg

June 18, 2019June 17, 2019 Slanted Fish

Hey Poptropicans! It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these, but the PHB is back with another Poptropica Portfolio post!

Who’s the smirking dude? Don’t know, but he’s on the cover of this Creator’s portfolio.

We’re spotlighting Abigail Grigg, also known online as Zukitz. She’s been working with StoryArc Media, Poptropica’s company, since October 2018. On her portfolio website, she features characters, props, and environments you might recognize — and a few you might not. Click to enlarge images:

You may recognize many of these characters as recent additions to the store costumes, many of the props from monthly members’ gifts and clubhouse decor, and scenes from the Milk It! ad campaign. What we haven’t seen before are the two pink, romantic scenes — perhaps never-released Valentines-themed background art for the Photo Booth?

Abigail’s portfolio also features sketches and concepts for some of the above creations and other similar items. (Some of the Valentine sketches did make it into the Poptropica Stickers app earlier this year.) Again, click to enlarge pics:

On her website, Abigail had this to say about working with Poptropica:

I’ve been lucky to create artwork for the famous online game, Poptropica! I’ve had the pleasure to create characters, environments, concepts, and graphic design work for this longtime cherished game.
Abigail Grigg

If you liked this, check out more of Abigail’s artwork on her website! In addition to her own projects, she’s worked with clients like the Pokemon Company, Disney, and more, so there’s plenty to see.

Hope you enjoyed the work of Abigail Grigg! For more from Poptropica Creator artists, check out other Pop Portfolios we’ve featured here on the PHB. Stay awesome, Poptropicans.

Pop Petition: Make Mighty Action Force multiplayer

June 6, 2019April 14, 2021 Slanted Fish

This is a guest post by Beefy Penguin (username: Durbadal) petitioning for Mighty Action Force, the card game from PoptropiCon Island, to be made into a multiplayer game for the Arcade. Enjoy!

Hi there, fellow Poptropicans. I’m Beefy Penguin, and I just finished the PoptropiCon trilogy. My favorite part? Mighty Action Force.

For those who don’t know, or need a refresher, Mighty Action Force is a Trading Card Game (TCG), which is a game where you collect different cards or trade them with others to build a deck and compete against others).

Now, I am a TCG fan (I play Cardfight Vanguard, a world-famous trading
card game), so when I saw the Mighty Action Force TCG, I felt that the
game deserved much more care and focus in the world of Poptropica.

So here’s what I’m petitioning: MAF should be released as a multiplayer TCG in the Arcade, so players can collect cards and compete with each other. (In fact, they should make a special room just for this game!)

*A collection of Mighty Action Force cards.*

Each player would have a basic deck, but that could be just the beginning. Single cards and booster packs could be obtained through quests, mini-games, trades, or purchased through credits. With so many characters on Poptropica, the possibilities for new cards are endless.

The game would be played against other players, head-to-head, in real time. A few new rules could be introduced to this game, like a clan system, the ability to boost your action with the power of another card, and to be able to defend against opponents’ attacks with the cards in one’s hand.

Poptropica has a lot of games in the Arcade—but nothing like this. It would be a great addition to the player experience, so I’d love to see it happen.

Until next time, stay popping!

Beefy Penguin out.

Community Creations: May 2019

June 1, 2019June 1, 2019 Spotted Dragon

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the May recap for Community Creations! May’s theme was houses & architecture and the featured work is not in any particular order. Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Cabin Fever by ToothlessDragon11

Toothlessdragon11 - Cabin Fever

Oooh, a great piece to kick this month’s showcase off! The eerie lighting from the house sets a wonderfully spooky theme, with Van Buren’s intimidating silhouette drawing the eye in immediately. The simple color changes on the logs of the cabin display wonderful texture while maintaining the drawing’s smooth aesthetic too! Same goes for the awesome detail in the grass. You can tell that a lot of attention went into this design! And the cabin is a perfect feature for this month’s theme. Find her DeviantArt here.

Poseidon’s Throne Room by ray-of-flight

ray-of-flight - Poseidons Throne Room

Continuing our apparent attention to detail, this piece is simply put: super cool. The blue color scheme sets up the appropriately aquatic setting and the detail in Posideon’s throne is spectacular. I guess you can really build a house anywhere, huh? Even underwater? Anyway, the cool-colored line-art is smooth, along with the soft cell-shading. What a unique, grand example of architecture! And the drawing was perfect for Mer-may. Find his DeviantArt here.

Desert Penthouse by Poptropicagatchavers

Poptropicagatchavers - Desert Penthouse

Wow, a Realms submission! 🙂 Feels like quite the throwback at this point, huh? Anyway, it’s always amazing to see the creativity that goes into building a home with such limited material, and this piece is no exception. Though simple, there is certainly detail on every floor. Pretty cozy looking for a desert, I must say! Hope that spaghetti doesn’t go bad. Find her DeviantArt here.

Monster Carnival Ferris Wheel by Kashews

Kashews - Monster Carnival Ferris Wheel

Another eerie piece I see! Featuring the Ferris Wheel from Monster Carnival Island, this drawing is quite a sight to see. The smooth lines of the wheel show sturdy architecture (though I never personally trust the integrity of fair rides…), and the glow of the lights is absolutely mesmerizing. Super appropriate for the spooky aesthetic of the carnival! Even in the background elements, there is certainly attention to detail. The texture in the grass, bushes, and even the sky is fantastic! The cityscape adds needed atmosphere as well. Hauntingly beautiful! Find the artist in the comment section. 🙂

Mt. Olympus by happyclonetrooper

happyclonetrooper - Mt. Olympus

Gah! Beautiful! Happyclonetrooper never ceases to amaze with her smooth line-art and steady craftsmanship. The soft color scheme creates a gorgeous atmosphere and the detail in the sky adds wonderful depth to a simple design. Mt. Olympus is certainly a great example of architecture, and thus a perfect feature. Makes me want to just sit and watch the sunset on Mythology Island! Similarly, this Home Island Flute Arrangement by the artist fits this month’s theme creatively. Find her DeviantArt here!

Honorable Mentions

City View by Jesta7

Jumpy Feather by MasterPinpey

House by Greedy Shadow

There were so many different takes on the theme this month! Super cool to see everyone’s unique ideas. 🙂

June: How do I Participate?

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is June’s theme? June’s theme is…

Pride!

With June being Pride month, I see this as a perfect opportunity for Community Creations to show some support for the LGBT community. Last year for June, our theme was colorful, which is certainly fitting for the month as well. In 2017, the PHB kicked summer off with a pride party in fact, so why not keep that support going?

That being said, you can find pride is a lot more than just your orientation. No matter who you are or what your interests may be, it is important to respect yourself and others! So that’s what this month is all about! You can apply the theme of pride to anything you’re proud to show off this month, including your colors.

Show off how much your drawing skills have improved by recreating an old Poptropica themed piece! Give us a display of just how much time and effort you’ve put in to earning your huge medallion collection! Maybe you’re proud of your HUGE supply of Poptropica merch? And perhaps most importantly, showcase your pride in who you (and your Poptropican) are! Let those pride flags fly.
