The Poppies are our fan-hosted award event for Poptropica fans. During the weeks leading up to the PHB’s birthday on July 26, readers can nominate and vote for their favorites in various categories. Weโll conclude with a party and livestream announcing the results!
After going over your feedback for how to approach the 9th annual Poppies, the votes ended in favor of keeping the event as it was, with a mix of categories about the game itself and the fandom beyond. ๐
We’re now kicking off with a nomination round, where you are invited to suggest the contestants for each category! This round starts now and ends next Sunday, July 14. Nine awards for 9 years of Poppies โ let’s go!

For best boss fight, I’m nominating the Astro-Knights boss fight against Mordred.
For the cutest character, I’m nominating Augustus Gloop and (I don’t know if this counts) the Red Baron’s pet Ack.
Most tearjerking moment:
That one scene in Back Lot from the film where your player sends off the character, who then gets struck by lightning. I don’t care that it was just a movie, but seeing that scene always made me so sad.
The end of Monster Carnival (both the original and re-written ones). The first one made me so sad that Ringmaster Raven/Bird Boy was made a laughingstock once again, and the rewritten one still made me so sad because I know what it feels like to lose a friend, and I also felt bad for Ringmaster Raven/Bird Boy.
Classic Island Most Deserving of an Original Soundtrack: Astro-Knights. There were so many epic scenes that deserved epic soundtracks.

Holy macaroni, best boss was my idea! Thanks so much! How many votes are allowed per category? I actually have quite a few ideas for votes, and though I haven’t played Astro-Knights final boss (come at me, haters), I know everyone is just going to vote for it. So I’d rather vote for someone else just to make sure the predictable doesn’t happen, unless I do play it, and really do like it. Thanks for using my idea though! I love bosses in video games, they’re some of my favorite parts.

Yeah, fortunately, it seems like Omegon has been getting a lot of nominations in the comments. I honestly thought his boss battle was forgotten, since the Poptropica wiki doesn’t even list him as a boss! I’m just glad to see so much support for one of the most threatening Poptropica villains. Who knows? Maybe Tobor Aureum might just end up taking home the W!
Well, I’m quite surprised by nominees so far. All the votes for best boss battle are for Omegon! And the Poptropica wiki doesn’t even list him as a boss! Did he turn everybody into Hench-Bots again? Not that I’m complaining, because I expected him to get left in the dust against Binary Bard’s robot, but it seems that Tobor Aureum is getting some love by the fans! And I thought Poptropicon was a fairly disliked island. Who knows? Maybe he’ll end up bringing home the gold.

Most tear jerking moment: For me, it’s either the ending to vampire’s curse island, where bram thanks you before turning to ash, or, it’s the ending to ghost story with all the spirits moving on. Hits different..

My first vote for the best boss is Omegon. Great music, great atmosphere, great design, just a great battle. I expected him to get forgotten in favor of you-know-who, but so far, he’s getting a lot of love!
My first vote for old islands that need a soundtrack is Zomberry. A fan favorite island that would really have the scary atmosphere boosted by a haunting soundtrack.

Ishmael from S.O.S. is cute and innocent. He loves whales, gives to charity, and plants trees.
Most Tearjerking Moment
Chapter 10 of the 4th graphic novel. Mya, Oliver, and Jorge each look into alternate timelines to see what their lives would be like if the main bad thing that drastically changed their lives never happened (Mya’s mother never passing, Oliver’s father never leaving, Jorge’s keeping his old friends).
After debating it, they each decide to stay in their own timeline together, learning that a person’s life experiences (both good and bad) can shape someone into a better person, and you shouldn’t throw away or disregard the good things you have in life because of the bad things that happen.

I think you can only nominate 3 for each category.
My second nomination (I didn’t realize that they were nominations, not votes) is Zeus, the second most iconic boss in the game. I personally prefer the Super Villain Island version, because it’s more dramatic, despite the lack of music. Zeus has already destroyed several islands, and he even becomes the Statue of Liberty, which was nuts. There’s a lot more on the line, in my opinion.

These are my submissions for the 2024 Poppies!!
Best Boss fight: Iโm choosing Shrink Ray Islandโs boss fight for this category. As a kid I found it difficult to get behind the items in time to hide, but once you know what to do itโs fun to duck and weave and that Mr Silva gets what he deserves!
Cutest Character: SPROCKET!!!! He is the cutest side-kick, Dryads are also quite cute.
Most Tear Jerking moment: I wasnโt really sure at first, but then I thought Fionaโs Violin Piece The music as well as the theme of the island can be quite tear jerking. For an island that lacks that background music the addition of the song makes it that bit more powerful.
Classic island Deserving Music: Twisted Thicket I feel this island would have the most magical and somewhat ominous soundtrack. Iโm thinking similar to the โsilence of the forestโ from the bravely default OST. Poptropicaโs own version of this would be so cool and mystical!!
Most Likely Popspiracy: Are Poptropicans Plants? This post stuck the most out to me, especially the nano-sized virus hunter bit. It does make sense!!!

I know this is probably a hot take, but for my third and final best boss nomination, I choose the Red Dragon, from the island of the same name. Some people seemed to get quite frustrated with this boss, but I think it get overlooked a lot. I was thinking of nominating the giant robot from Legendary Swords, the best mini quest, but you already seem to have that on your minds. And it would’ve been much more dramatic if E.Vile was the boss himself. Speaking of Legendary Swords, I know it’s a mini quest, but it could’ve been very dramatic with a soundtrack in my opinion. Could I nominate that? I’m not going to nominate it yet, but it’s a good mini quest, and needs more attention.
Yeah, I was glad there was an easy mode with the red dragon boss fight haha
I actually didn’t use the easy mode. No judgement, but it did still take me quite a few tries. If there’s an easy mode in a game, I tend not to go with it. I at least want to experience the game the way it was meant to be played. Then again, I did use a walkthrough on the first part of Zomberry. Hey, it was not at all obvious that the lever was there, and it was only that part. I thought my game was glitched. Sue me. Not that I’ve still completed the island yet, so no spoilers for the other puzzles. Man, I got off topic.
For my second nomination for cutest character, I believe the fried-dough-loving carnie apprentice, Edgar from Monster Carnival Island is a great candidate. He’s just so adorable. Charming smile, wholesome childlike energy, and hard worker. Alright, Edgar, now drop a train on ’em! (And I just realized his name was a reference to Edgar Allen Poe. Not that that supports my point, but I thought it was cool.)

The Loch Ness monster seems like a bit of a hot take. It’s not hideous or anything, but still seems very left field to me. And so does Early Poptropica. I guess they could’ve implemented some sort of chiptune soundtrack though, so it’s not that left field. TBH Jeff Heim could’ve killed the OST with any classic island.

My first vote for most tearjerking moment is the blandification Bosko, from Goofball Island. Your characters sheer sorrow as Bosko’s mind is slowly being overpowered by the blandness, Bosko’s giving his favorite leaf blower to you before his mind is fully overcome, it… it’s just… I told myself I wouldn’t cry! Nah, just kidding. The whole scene is kind of played for laughs, or at least not taken too seriously. But it would be a very funny joke vote. If it actually wins, I would die laughing.
