Top 5 Picks

Zomberry Rocks by Lucky Joker

Kicking things off with quite the creative entry! I love the unique medium of painting on a rock, reminiscent of painting eggs around Easter. It would be super fun to hide these around your yard! Plus, that clean line work and coloring is impeccable. Find his Instagram here.

Zomberry Comic by Tough Spinner

If any of you were able to play the Zomberry game in Roblox, this scene may look a bit familiar to you. I love how ambitious the comic is and how dynamic each panel is! Pairing sequential images with text can be quite the challenge, and this storyline reads very clearly. The action, emotion, and humor are all well captured! Find the artist in the comments and on Discord.

Joe Puddy A3 by OnyxOnline

Based on an expression sheet, this piece was made by taking a fan-suggested character and drawing them in predetermined poses on a grid. And I’ve got to say, Joe Puddy looks super intense with ol’ expression A3. About to go bananas blueberries, it looks like… ๐Ÿ‘€ Love the idea and the execution! Find their Tumblr here.

Joe was Always here by Thehypercutter

Another Joe Puddy feature! This one features the Poptropican post-epidemic, but still with splotched blueberry scars from the outbreak. Kinda gives him a lot of unique character! Very creative take. Find her Twitter here.

Zomberry Island Fan Art by Maddie

Last but certainly not least, we have this frightfully fruity painting. I love the traditional use of medium, as well as the application of color. Those purples look so cool! Definitely makes me nostalgic for Zomberry Island. And maybe a bit hungry for blueberries too? No? Just me? Anyway, fantastic work! Find her Instagram here.

We had some berry cool submissions this month, huh? Keep up that craving for creating next time around too! ๐Ÿ‡๐ŸงŸโ€โ™‚๏ธ

May: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that monthโ€™s theme. So what is May’s theme? May’s theme isโ€ฆ

 JADE SCARAB!

This theme should come as no surprise, since Jade Scarab Island was recently released for all players. If you haven’t played it yet, you might want to do so before participating this month! It’s time to celebrate this island through all your creative ideas.

You know the drill! Based on the adventure, create drawings, outfits, poetry, you name it!

  • Submit: Comment below with a link to whatever youโ€™ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitterTumblr, or Discord.

Community Creations: March 2022

Top 5 Picks

Bashful Icicle by sarcasm.societyy

Starting off with some sick fashion choices, I love the color palette of this design! Though our Poptropicans may not have necks… or ears… or noses… the added accessories here really bring the Popsona to life. The texture of the line work is quite pleasing and helps everything feel super cohesive. Maybe I should think about dying my hair green now if it looks this good! Find her Instagram here.

Lady Chavez by abbeyjoy25

This green color palette is more muted, which adds to the darker tone of the work. Goes well with the earthy browns too! The character is a bounty-hunter for hire, yet comes to form a close relationship with Jorge in the artist’s Poptropica series idea. Cool design for sure, and definitely not a lady I’d want to mess with. Find her Instagram here.

Saint Patrick’s Day Smoothie by TillyMeowJings-ARSB

Okay, not only do I love the sequential approach to this work, but I also love the throwback to a certain diner that all Poptropica nerds know and love. I don’t know about you guys, but I would seemingly spend ours trying different smoothie combinations to get my hair color just right! Anyway, the design work here is really clean and the text flows well with the story. And I love the humor! Find their Tumblr here.

Fiona by Pink Crush

Of course, I don’t think we could have a “Going Green” Poptropica theme without calling some attention to Twisted Thicket. It’s the greenest island of them all, in both color and message! On Twisted Thicket, this character “lives in an enchanted mushroom cottage, and has the ability to grow plants, healing, and being able to understand and talk to animals.” Think she’d get along with the Elf Queen? Great use of different green shades to show the layering and texture of the nature-inspired outfit. Find them in the comments and on Discord.

Vibin’ in the Forest by happyclonetrooper

Ahhh, can’t you just imagine basking in that sunlight? I love that even though this is a green heavy design, it still brings such warmth into it with that super soft lighting. It definitely conveys a peaceful mood within this lush environment. I wonder what Maroon Ring is writing about? Find her Instagram here.

๐ŸงŸโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ ZOMBERRY! ๐Ÿ‡๐ŸงŸโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I know there’s been a lot of frustration lately (some over the top, some quite serious) about Poptropica’s priorities lately, including their recent endeavors in Roblox. Particularly when it comes to this odd fixation with unicorns, seemingly only connected to Poptropica through Amelia.

And honestly, it took all my self restraint not to steer into the collision and make this month’s theme “unicorns.” But anyway! Zomberry Island remains a beloved adventure in many fans hearts, so with its recent Roblox revision, why not embrace it a little? At least it is an iconic Poptropican island, in contrast to Unicorn Frenzy.

So let’s get to drawing your favorite Zomberry characters, or maybe your own Popsona zombified! Perhaps write a fanfic of someone surviving the Zomberry apop-alypse? You could even design other fruit/food-related zombies! Maybe even take a crack at designing your own 3D Zomberry Poptropican if you’re familiar with 3D modeling? Cursed or not, we’d love to see it.

Top 5 Picks

Radiation by BlazingAngel123

The Super Power Island villains are taken a step further here with a Swap AU in which the villains are actually the good guys! Bashful Sword, usually a heroic popsona, is turned Mafia leader in this universe. A wonderfully intriguing story, heightened even more by a wonderfully dynamic composition! The border breaking of the panels and dynamic poses of the characters adds an excellent sense of movement to the whole page. My eyes can’t stop taking in all the little details! Find her DeviantArt here.

Cryptid Comic by Tilly Meow Jings ARSB

So… do you believe in magic? Poptropica definitely has its fair share of unexplainable supernatural phenomena, but our heroes seem to be able to handle it. I love this scene from Cryptids Island, and the comic format is perfect for it! Not only is the coloring and line art super clean, but the composition and speech bubbles add an excellent sense of flow to the panels. Find their Tumblr here.

Merlin AI Comic by BunniesNBowties (Planet-Poptropica)

Imagining Merlin as a more humanoid robot really interests me right off the bat. For this comic, a community member asked “How does Merlin AI eat his foods, especially robot mice?” I love how these panels are educational yet retain a sense of humor and playfulness. The gridded background and square speech bubbles especially add to Binary Bard’s “logical” tone. There’s great attention to detail, from the texture of the chalk to the smooth, clean coloring! Find their Tumblr here and their side blog here.

The Worldly Games by Bronze Socks & Smart Icicle

SATURDAY AFTERNOON, ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF PIGLANDIA.

Smart Icicle: Hey Bronze Socks, have you ever wondered if there is another world besides Piglandia.

Bronze Socks: I am sort of wondering the same thing. Hmmmm??

Bronze Socks picks up a clock that looked like it came from Steamworks Island but different. The clock had a purple aura around it with a note attached to it.

Bronze Socks picks up the note off the clock and reads it.

Bronze Socks: DO NOT USE! MAY END YOUR LIFE!

Smart Icicle: Well that was certainly ominous, I donโ€™t think we should take the chance.

Bronze Socks: Are you kidding? This could be our answer to what we have been wondering about for years! Wait, what is happening to Piglandia!

Bronze Socks points to Piglandia as it starts to turn dull and gray. Bits of buildings in the town were starting to crumble…

KEEP READING HERE

In the plot of this short story, “two young adventurers set on a quest to find their crystal pig to restore their world, Piglandia. In order to find their crystal pig, they must compete in a series of death defying games against other infamous villains. Can the two adventurers make it and restore their world? Or will it be Game Over?” Dramatic, action-packed writing like this is certainly a huge part of the world of comics! With a dash of Squid Game and a whole lot of Poptropica, it’s quite the exciting read. And I love the spirit of collaboration between these two authors! Keep reading their story on DeviantArt.

The Adventures of Ruby (Part 2) by PegaKid (Muddy Kid)

This cute comic strip makes me super reminiscent of playing Poptropica as a younger kid. And this is just part 2 in a whole series of adventures! The project is very ambitious and clearly fits our comic theme. I love the hard work put into this story and the engaging format of panels and speech bubbles. In fact, Muddy Kid’s story is featured in a series of Creatorsโ€™ Blog guest posts, where you can catch up and read from the beginning.

March: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ€ Going Green! ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ’š

I don’t know about you guys, but when I think of March, I think of the color green. St. Patrick’s Day being a big reason for that! But when I think of something “green” I don’t just think of the color, I also think of being environmentally friendly.

So for this month, I challenge you guys to “go green!” That could mean making something totally monochromatic with green colors, OR it could have all the colors of the rainbow but be centered around the environment. It doesn’t have to be both, but it certainly could be!

Maybe draw your favorite green-themed Poptropicans, like Speeding Spike or Sir Cador the Astro-Knight! Perhaps write a fan fiction about your Popsona getting really lucky on St. Patrick’s day and a villain getting green with envy. Or design your own IRL Poptropica art using recycled materials? Maybe take a crack at both challenges and draw an environmental scene from Twisted Thicket! It’s all up to you.

Community Creations: December 2021

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the December recap for Community Creations. December’s theme was Goofball, so be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue whatโ€™s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Dullsville & Goofside Fits by Lucky Joker

Wow, wow, wow! Now these are some great, goofy outfits! I love the unique approach to this submission, since the IRL clothing stands out against drawings. And, of course, both sides of Goofball Island are wonderfully represented here. Very creative! Which outfit would you wear? Find his Instagram here and check out his PHB posts right here.

Balanced Ending by ice cream

This submission also captures both Dullsville and Goofside quite well. It’s great to see them balanced together here and the fractured composition makes the design really captivating. Gotta love that contrast between the color and the black and white! Which ending did you guys choose? Find the artist often on Discord.

Detective Duo by Midnightoilstudio

Another fractured sort of composition! I dig it! I think we can all admit that it’s a really visually appealing way to showcase two sides of one character. With this one, I especially love how the black and white detective is actually seen on a colored background, and vice versa with the popsona, Vi. It shows excellent contrast and balance! Find her DeviantArt here.

Friendly Feather as Blandstonย by Friendly Feather

This piece focuses more on the Dullsville side of things, which is ironically refreshing, huh? The black and white pencil is obviously quite appropriate, but I especially love that pop of red in the eyes. I love seeing all these OCs put into the environment of Goofball Island! Not dull art in the least! Find the artist often on Discord.

Mel O’Dee by Barefoot Knuckle

Speaking of OCs, this Goofball specific OC is super cool. According to the artist, Mel O’Dee (a Dullsville singer at the Crazy Club) was “inspired by old detective movies and a certain Disney film.” Talk about a great drag name too! Love the creativity in this character. Can anyone guess the original song that this pop version is referencing? Find the artist often in the comments section.

Am I a Villain? by BrittScarlet

Great work as usual, everyone! Some goofy art, some dull art, but ironically nothing bland or boring to see here! Keep it up! ๐Ÿ˜€

 Arabian Nights!

Episode 2 of Arabian Nights was recently added to the Poptropica map, though for members only, so it’s definitely been on my mind. Perhaps this will lead to more beloved islands returning? Hopefully episode 2 will be available to all soon enough.

In the meantime, there’s nothing stopping the rest of us from enjoying the island through art! And writing! And costumes! And- well, you get the rest.

As most of you know, Arabian Nights was was the winner of the 2013 “Create Your Dream Island” Contest, and with other fan-created island ideas coming to fruition, it feels appropriate to focus on this month. So let’s spend the night creating, shall we?

Island Flash-back: Game Show & Mocktropica ๐Ÿ’ป

It’s the end of the year, and we have two islands to mark it (totally not because I got so lost in the holidays that I forgot to make November’s post!). I’ll be highlighting both islands selected for the past couple months, which are…

Game Show & Mocktropica!!

While not often listed among the most favorite classic islands, many fans have good memories of Game Show Island, and it has a particularly unique design and setting! It takes the futuristic aspects of Astro-Knights and the apocalyptic ones of Steamworks, and fuses them together in an A.I.-takes-over-humanity story. Also includes the fun and games style of Reality TV, this time with more danger!

More Robots: Itโ€™s like theyโ€™ve taken over or something.

But unlike Sprocket and Merlin, these robots are not so friendly, all culminating to an epic battle against the evil supercomputer Holmes… who you defeat with a flash drive. Ahem. Definitely a brains-over-brawn island!

Deep Thought: Putting processing power to good use.

All jokes aside, this island does have a lot of fun puzzles, at times requiring players to test their real-world knowledge with fun facts! It also features several IRL locations, including Istanbul, Miami, and Buenos Aires.

Operating System: When technology meets talent, anything is possible.

For our second and final feature, Mocktropica Island is a special one that is not remembered so much for storytelling, worldbuilding, or puzzles, but for its humor that pokes fun at the game itself, and all the negative directions the game and its developers could turn… some of which are hitting a little too close to home now.

Also, the theme music is severely underrated.

Strap In: Concussion prevention starts with sensible headgear.

Mocktropica is definitely a cult classic. But will the devs ever re-release an island that would be even more self-deprecating now (especially considering the references to former employees)? Only time will tell. And let’s not forget the official Mega Fighting Bots website!

Letโ€™s remind the Pop Creators why these islands became so memorable, and why the efforts that went to create them should not go to waste. Encourage them to preserve their past stories and their potential!

Until next year!
