Community Creations: October 2019

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the October recap for Community Creations! October’s theme was Inktober and the featured work is not in any particular order. Be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue whatโ€™s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Freeze by MasterPinpey

Cute drawing for the prompt! Poptropica items and side characters and such don’t often receive the spotlight that they deserve, so I think that focusing in on this freezing power was a great idea. I love the perspective of having one character in the foreground and the other in the background, despite the fairly simple scene. Plus, the addition of the foreground character’s shivers, shocked eyes, and newly formed icicles are an excellent touch. Fantastic sketch! Find her DeviantArt here.

Injured by Meganf123456

Ooh, a dark scene! I like that this submission really contrasts our first one, showing the diverse drawings that can grow out of Inktober. This scene is dark and dramatic, perfectly fitting the “injured” prompt. Movement and emotion are particularly shown well! The glimpse we are given into the story makes me certainly want to know more about what is going on, which is always a treat (or trick?) for the viewer. Well done! Find her DeviantArt here.

Pumpkin Field by iLee-Font

Aw, cute! Though this piece doesn’t strictly follow the “official Inktober prompt list,” I think this doodle is perfectly appropriate nonetheless. The pumpkin patch setting matches the aesthetic of the spooky season very well, and is made interesting with the limited use of color. I’ve fallen in love with this artist’s sketchy style! Though messy, the posing, composition, emotion, and details of their drawings are excellent to say the least. Find their DeviantArt here.

Ring by happyclonetrooper

Ooh! Perhaps not a spooky submission, but fitting for Inktober nonetheless. I love how perfectly “Maroon Ring” matches the “ring” prompt. What are the odds? I think the artist’s style of Poptropicans is super neat, and I’m glad to see them branch out their use of mediums by utilizing colored pencil in this particular drawing. Even adding something as simple as a, well, ring, behind the figure adds great interest to the simple design. Great work! Find her DeviantArt here.

Happy Halloween! by MissEligon

Ahh, this is such a fun design! Certainly a stretch from our Inktober theme, but totally fitting for Halloween, so why not? The color scheme is super spooky, and the detail put into each character is superb. Every Poptropican has such a unique outfit, matching a unique expression and pose. Despite the undead vibes, each figure is so lively! The craftsmanship and composition is breathtaking. Stunning work! Find her DeviantArt here.

Honorable Mentions

Very spooooOOOOooOoky submissions this month guys! They really sent shiver down my spine! I hope you all had a fantastic Halloween, because I’m already excited for next year! ๐Ÿ™‚

November: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that monthโ€™s theme. So what is November’s theme? November’s theme isโ€ฆ

Steampunk!

Now when I say steampunk, I don’t just mean the island. I mean the whole aesthetic! Most of us are in the midst of fall, and I think that this rustic, “machines intertwined with nature” theme can match some of those spooky, serene autumn vibes. That being said, basing your creations off of Steamworks Island itself is perfect!

The options are up to your imagination! Maybe put together a costume fit for a steampunk scientist? Or perhaps draw your favorite steampunk plant monsters! Even write a story focusing on the adventures of Sprocket. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  • Comment below with a link to whatever youโ€™ve created OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as 3 honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as youโ€™d like!

I will always be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. Bonus points if you make a compelling description for your piece! While quality counts, Iโ€™m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so donโ€™t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Pop 5

Pop 5: Scariest costumes/items

Ghostly greetings, Poptropicans! ๐Ÿ‘ป It’s Lucky Joker creeping in with a fang-tastic little treat for you all. Today, I’ll be presenting the top 5 scariest costumes/items in Poptropica (based on my personal opinion) and explaining why. Grab your teddy bear and hug it tight because it’s about to get frightening… mwahaha! Let’s get into it!

#5: Skull Pirate

Aarrr! Coming in at the number five spot is the bone-chilling, spine-tingling Skull Pirate costume!

In widespread culture, pirates are known to be barbaric, fearsome, and menacing criminals who will stop at no cost to obtain valuable items or properties โ€“ so they’re already pretty scary as it is. Remove all flesh from the face and they become even scarier. Seeing a bare skull as opposed to the normal Poptropican face we’re used to is quite unsettling. Shiver me timbers!

#4: Cyclops

Moving on to number four… we have the Cyclops costume!

This is probably one of the freakiest costumes in the game, period. Just look at it! That gigantic bloodshot eye, the pointy fangs, the unusual green skin โ€“ this thing is something I’d for sure never want to run into. And that large wooden club in his clutches doesn’t help either.

I believe this costume has the potential to be in the top 3 (or even number one!) on this list. However, the sluggish face expression takes a away from the scare factor just a bit, so at number four it will stay.

#3: Creepy Puppet

Yikes! Take a look at the Creepy Puppet โ€“ the number three spot!

Have you ever watched Dead Silence, Child’s Play, or Triloquist? Well this is Poptropica’s resident murderous doll, and it’s just as terrifyingly eerie. The thought of a toy coming to life โ€“ especially one with such a deranged and jarring grin โ€“ I’m sure makes everyone’s blood run cold.

#2: Zombify/Pale Zombie

Hide your brains! Back from the dead in second place are these zombified monstrosities! Get ready for an apocalypse…

Zombies are one of the most mainstream monsters in pop culture today, so it makes sense that they’ve made their way into the online world to begin invading Poptropica. The horrifying faces on these guys can send anyone running way in the opposite direction. Both green and pale versions are equally as shriek inducing and definitely deserve this high placement on the list. I’d say they’re number one material if it weren’t for…

*BEEP* We interrupt this message to showcase a few honorable mentions before I reveal my top pick.

Honorable Mentions:

โ€ฆAnd now, for the scariest costume in all of Poptropica…

#1: Birthday Candle

The 11th Birthday Candle! Aaah! What is it?! Haha, I’m kidding… that was just a Halloween prank. They don’t call me Lucky Joker for no reason. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Onto the real number one…

#1: Bog Monster

…the Bog Monster!

Okay, this costume is petrifying in virtually every conceivable way, my goodness. Poptropica really tried scaring kids with this one. The slimy, swampy texture, wide grimace, and eyes that look like they’re gonna pop out and land on your lap at any second just make me want to retch. I mean, this costume is straight up nightmare fuel, and that’s why it’s here at number one!

So, what did you think of my list? Anything I missed? I’d love to hear your opinions so leave them down in the comments if you dare. I hope you enjoyed. Pop on and stay spooky! ๐Ÿฆ‡

Pop Petitions

Pop Petition: Clubhouse Perks ๐Ÿก

What’s up, Poptropicans? It’s Lucky Joker here coming at you with another Pop Petition! Today I’ll be discussing things I’d like to see added to the clubhouses on Poptropica. You may agree or disagree with this list, but let’s keep it positive either way. ๐Ÿ˜› Without further ado, to the list!

1) Music

The fact that Poptropica already has an amazing selection of existing tracks from all of its sound updated islands, it’s hard to believe this isn’t an option yet. I mean, what better way to personalize your clubhouse than creating an ambience through your choice of music? Think about it โ€” from the serene sounds of Mythology to the peppy jingle from the streets of Poptropicon โ€” the possibilities are virtually endless!

2) Furniture Interaction & Customization

Similar to what SD said in her Pop Petition last year, I think it’d be fun if there was more interactability with our furniture items. They did it in Poptropica Worlds, so I’m sure they can do it here on the OG Pop too. Bouncing on a bed, flipping a light switch, or surfing through a few TV channels could really make the difference!

Capability to customize furniture would be spectacular as well! Imagine a color changing feature (similar to the colorizer), or being able to rotate and shift items the way you want. The photo booth could serve a whole new purpose if we were able to hang our creations up on our walls. How cool would that be?

Picture from the Poptropica Creators’ blog post guide to clubhousing.

3) Liking & Sharing

Wouldn’t it be neat if all the hard work you put into decorating your clubhouse had a bigger pay off? Having a like button and share button would serve that very purpose! It could function in the same way Realms does: having a code. That way, it wouldn’t be limited to just your friends, and every Poptropican can see it.

Realms sharing features: visiting with a code and giving likes.

Or better yet, it could work like Multiverse used to. You could share a code anywhere (such as on the PHC) and people could type that in, then POOF, they’re in your clubhouse!

4) Frequent Updates

I’d say Poptropica has been pretty good at offering new decorations fairly regularly at this point, but if at all possible, if they can dish them out even more frequently โ€” that’d be super awesome! All in all though, Poptropica, you get a thumbs up from me on this one.

A sampling of clubhouse decorations on Poptropica.

And there it is folks โ€” the things I’d like to see regarding the fantastic clubhouses! What would you like to see added? Feel free to leave your ideas and thoughts in the comments section.

Thank you all for reading and I’ll talk to you in the next one. Pop on!

PHB Specials, Pop-over

PHB Pop-over Special: Black-ish

Hey Poptropicansโ€”if you’re a fan of the ABC sitcom Black-ish, you’ll enjoy this special “Pop-over”: our term for a Poptropica crossover, in which we take characters from another universe and create them on Poptropica.

Though the tech changes since our last Pop-over have rendered most of these characters not fully viewable from the Avatar Studio or your friends list, they’re still not too complicated to recreate. From left to right, here’s how you can dress like the Johnsons on Poptropica:

  • Grandma Ruby: Her outfit is fully created from the “create new character” screen. See her live on the Avatar Studio with the username RubyBlackish (for the others below, replace “Ruby” in the username with the character’s name โ€” this may help for customizing via MAP).
  • Zoey: Get the hair and hoodie from the Tie-Dye Hoodie in the store.
  • Bow: The romper comes from the Fruity Cutie in the store.
  • Junior: Everything can be assembled from the “create new character” screen.
  • Dre: Snag the hoodie from the Warm Vibes costume in the store, and the jeans with the nice chain from inside the New You building on Home Island.
  • Jack: Everything can be assembled from the “create new character” screen.
  • Diane: Find the hair and t-shirt on the Galaxy Girl in the store. Get the glasses from New You on Home Island. The fun skirt comes from the “create new character” screen.
  • Grandpa Earl: Clothes are from the “create new character” screen, while the glasses can be grabbed inside New You.

Black-ish is a TV comedy about an upper middle class black American family living the so-called “American dream.” The generally lighthearted show revolves around the family’s lives, with some exploration into sociopolitics and the culturally assimilated “black-ish-ness” of the characters. Rated TV-PG.

Hope you enjoyed this Black-ish x Poptropica crossover! Have you seen the show? What are your thoughts? Sound off in the comments!

No clue whatโ€™s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Season Fashion by xXLilAngel2004Xx

Ooh, covering all of our bases right away! Each outfit shows great personality, including all four seasons. The character designs show fantastic effort and attention to detail! Even the backgrounds match the seasons very well. The unique expressions, clothes, and posses show slight movement and hint at a much more in depth backstory behind each girl. Wonderful submission! Find her DeviantArt here.

Fall Forest by happyclonetrooper

Wow, beautiful! This artist never ceases to amaze with her warm lighting and color schemes. The landscape is simple but stunning, with a very welcoming ambient light. Both the setting and outfits of the characters are particularly appropriate for fall, fitting our theme perfectly. A world is really built around the focal characters of the piece, like a snapshot taken during a walk through the woods. Stunning! Find her DeviantArt here.

Seasons of Poptropica by Magniventris

Haha, amazing take on this month’s theme! The different scenes show a strong grasp on the topic, with a fantastic creative approach. There are more than four seasons when you stop to think about it! I mean, just look at Netflix! Ha, anyway, this piece truly feels straight out of a graphic novel. The humor is wonderful and the composition/perspective within each panel is well crafted. Plus, just look at that amazing color and line-art! Excellent! Find her DeviantArt here.

It’s Cold Outside by NineTenOnetyOne

Aw, cute! Focusing on winter, this piece perfectly encompasses the coziness of cooler temperatures. The outfit designs are very appropriate, and the minimal features still tell a big story about the dynamic between the characters. Wonderful personality is communicated through a small, cute scene. Great submission! Find her DeviantArt here.

Gentle and Amy – Spring 2019 by Gentle Dolphin

Wow, we almost hit all the seasons, huh? The vibrancy of spring is clearly shown in this piece through the warm, bold colors. Even the pose of the character displays a bouncy movement! The relationship of Gentle and her cat is super cute, conveying strong positive vibes when paired with the flowery background and bright color scheme. This piece is a perfect example of how a very simple background can make a piece look that much more finished and aesthetically pleasing! Fantastic, I love it. Find her DeviantArt here.

October: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

Inktober!

Inktober is a huge trend throughout the art community, but certainly a big pressure to get done everyday. Don’t know what it’s all about? To put it simply, Inktober is a challenge to draw something every day in the month of October, with each day built off of a different prompt. Some people go all out, while others keep it more casual. But because of the broad prompts, we can apply Inktober to all kinds of creations! Now, I’m not asking you guys to submit 31 pieces, nor do they have to be ink drawings. No! But anything Poptropica related that you’ve created based on Inktober prompts, or Halloween themes, is completely acceptable!

Below, you’ll find a huge list of the official 2019 Inktober prompts, but please feel free to mix and match and add your own twists when submitting into Community Creations! This month is all about spooky creativity, so stay flexible! For example, drawing some Zomberries would be perfect for “mindless.” Perhaps a scene from Twisted Thicket for the “overgrown” prompt? Or a huge Red Dragon for prompt 12! Go wild! You can even apply these themes to literature, costumes, you name it.

  • Comment below with a link to whatever youโ€™ve created OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as 3 honorable mentions.
