A 20/20 look into the PHB Readers’ Survey results

Good day, Poptropicans! Itโ€™s been a while since we conducted the 2020 PHB Readers’ Survey, but we’re finally ready to bring you the results with our analysis. Thanks to everyone who participated!

A couple months ago, we conducted our annual survey to gain greater insight of our reader base: you guys! In the three weeks the survey was open, we received 108 responses (an increase from last year) from Poptropicans all over the world. Reallyโ€”here’s where in the world PHB readers say they’re from:

What country do you live in?

By the way, yes, (some of) our charts in this post are interactive, so hover your mouse around to view the data! Here are the rest of the results…

Which of our past surveys did you participate in?

Over a span of 7 years, the PHB has held a total of six surveys to better understand our reader demographics. Once again, we were eager to know how many of you taking this year’s survey have been around long enough to participate in those of previous years. For many of you, it was your first PHB survey, but even more of you had participated before, too.

(Note that the percentage total goes above 100% due to the ability to select more than one answer.)

What is your gender?

Like last year, girls make up the majority gender of PHB readers, but it’s mellowed out a bit with 63% this year compared to last year’s almost 70%. The proportions of boys and nonbinary people remains similar as well.

What is your age?

Most of our readers say they’re aged 15โ€“18, which is on par with last year’s results. Notably, the 19โ€“21 age group has increased. They’re now tied with the 12โ€“14 group, compared to last year when they only matched about half the amount of 12โ€“14s and were only the fourth largest group.

If you live in the US, which state or territory?

Like before, the most represented states tend to be the more populous ones. California leads this time, with Florida not too far behind. A few of you claim New York and North Carolina as home, and Poptropicans scattered all over the country are reading this blog.

When did you discover Poptropica?

As previous surveys have shown, many of you found Poptropica in its earlier years, particularly during their prime era when islands were released much more frequently. 2010 and 2008 are the top answers at nearly 15%, followed by 2011 and 2012 at 11%.ย

How often do you play Poptropica?

Most of you said you play Poptropica about once every couple weeks, down from last year when the most common answer was a few times a week (which was the second most common answer this year). Looks like Poptropicaโ€™s weekly store updates and daily credit rewards do interest some of you enough to log in, but letโ€™s be real, theyโ€™re going to need more than that to reel everybody back in! As always, though, this chart is otherwise fairly evenly split between all the other options.

Are you a member on Poptropica?

Continuing the trend from last year, a ~64% majority of you have never been members nor have plans to be. More of you are saying you used to be (27%, up from last yearโ€™s 20%), and a smaller sliver are saying you currently have membership (7%, down from 11.6% last year) or that you will be (~2%, down from ~3%). Note, these answers came in before the classic islands were re-released for members only a few weeks ago.

When did you first find the PHB?

The results for this question were pretty evenly distributed over the years, with the top answers being more recent years: 2015, 2018, and 2019 all shared 12%, with 2016 and 2017 at 11% and even 2020 at 9.3%! Earlier years got smaller slices of the pie, but it still overjoys us to see that there are few who’ve been with us since the beginning.

How did you find us?

Not surprisingly, most of you (73.6%) discovered the PHB through searching the web. Other answers, tied at 8.5%, include hearing about us through a friend or sibling, as well as through another website, which is similar to results from before. But “a website link written on the school playground”โ€”now that’s a new one!

How often do you visit the PHB?

Maybe asking on the PHB brings biased answers to this question, but hey, most of our readers say theyโ€™re checking in on us a few times a weekโ€”which is more than how much they’re logging into Poptropica itself! However, the second and third top answers are down from last yearโ€™s, being once every couple of weeks, or once a week, rather than once or a few times a day in 2019. We canโ€™t promise to post every day, but we do try for a couple updates (or more) per week, so stay with us!

Which types of PHB posts do you enjoy?

Multiple answers could be selected here, which is why percentages add up to over 100%. As with previous years, the top answer continues to be news, which works out well as itโ€™s the main thing we post! Many of you also enjoy our blog updates (which covers every time we post, basically) and Community Creations series. Lots of you like our walkthroughs too, but we didnโ€™t count them as posts since theyโ€™re not exactly blogs, but are separate pages! Anyway, weโ€™re always looking out for cool bits from the Pop fandom to spotlight, so consider sending in a guest post, too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Besides the PHB, what portions of the Poptropica Help Network (PHN) do you regularly browse?

Although a chunk of survey respondents opted not to answer this one, among those who did answer, the Poptropica Wiki continues to be the most popular of the non-PHB sites in the Poptropica Help Network. The other options were only about half as popular, but hey, consider them checking them out! Even with lower activity, these places still have some good content from the past to look back on, and the DeviantArt group in particular still gets new art entries fairly often!

What other Poptropica blogs/fansites do you frequently visit?

We also wanted to know what other Poptropica fan sites you like to keep up with so we can share more Poptropica joy in different spaces. Although there arenโ€™t many active ones these days, some of you mentioned places like Poptropica Tips for Poptropicans, Shiny Bird’s Poptropica Blog, Sporty Boa Blog, Quick Fang’s Poptropica Fun Blog, the Poptropica Club Discord server, Poptropica blogs on Tumblr, and the Pop community on Instagram.

Go check them out! Keep in mind that these sites aren’t affiliated with the PHB, though, so we can’t be responsible for their content. And if you contribute to those spaces, keep it poppingโ€”youโ€™re doing great!

Anything else you’d like to add?

For those of you who took the time to write in a comment at the end, we want to affirm that we read each one and appreciated the feedback! Some common themes were keeping the community spirit alive despite the lack of game updates, doing more interactive contests with fans, plus more special posts like fashion ideas (check out our Pop-over series!), Pop Places IRL, and even tribe wars (have you seen our Tribal Tournament?).

Here are a few of the comments we received below, to give you all a taste of the thoughtfulness behind the PHB community:

I really enjoyed the Poptropica trivia and the costume closet page. Please post more behind the scenes stuff if you get exclusive access to it. I really appreciated your blog back in the day, when Poptropica was way more active, but since it kinda died down due to the whole Adobe Flash situation, I started playing less and left for a long time, but alas, the quarantine brought me back. Just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your efforts in keeping the blog and the fanbase active despite Poptropica’s current status and decreasing popularity.

Anonymous

Thanks for those kind words, they mean a lot! For those who want to revisit our trivia, we post fun facts about each island at the end of all our Island Guides. You might learn something new! Plus, over the years we’ve created a lot of good stuff collected under our Pop Plus page, so check that out too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Island trivia

I think we should focus more on maintaining our small community. Poptropica’s getting old as well as the audience. I think it’s best that we do more events, getting to know each other, and do activities. We could probably do some brainstorming via social media. I haven’t been in touch with the Poptropican Discord server because the last time I checked (which was probably a year ago), the server was kinda dead. I might try to see which places Poptropicans are the most active and figure out how we could gather up everyone and increase activity without things getting boring pretty quickly.

Also, we should make sure that the Poptropica creators are aware that us Poptropicans are still here waiting for new content. As well as there a plenty of us who are willing to volunteer for beta tests or what not. I hope that Poptropica will live long enough to become a legend that will continue on for generations like the Pokemon and Mario franchises. I think we as a community should play a part in trying to market Poptropica and get more people to join in. We could probably make up fan stories, legends, make more memes that are actually funny, and build connections within other communities so that they’ll get interested. I don’t know what else to think of. But I really don’t want to let go of another childhood memory. I’m proud to be a Poptropican veteran. Long Live Poptropica!

Popular Biker

We love our Poptropica community, and we’re glad to hear it from you guys too! If you’re looking to get plugged in, we’ve list some places on our Community page. Although our PHC Discord server isn’t as active as it used to be, we do post updates there from time to time, and Poptropicans can be found on other servers including the aforementioned Poptropica Club. And we’re still keeping the PHB active, including the comments sections!

The Poptropica Creators have mentioned in their posts that they’re listening to what players want, even suggesting that there may be future opportunities to beta-test their Haxe build. All the other suggestions about spreading the word are great too. As our survey results show, it’s true many in the fandom are also Poptropica veterans who have stuck around (or re-found the game) for nostalgiaโ€”which is a pretty powerful force. Long live Poptropica, indeed! ๐Ÿ‘‘

The Creators brought back the classic islands by popular demand.

Contests are a pretty good way to keep people engaged in the game, it would be especially good now since people are staying inside and I have a feeling that they are bored. However the blog seems to be doing pretty well right now, especially with the lack of updates the creators are putting in. Keep doing what you guys are doing!

Kashews

Contests are always fun, and since several of you brought it up, we hope we can bring you more of them in the near future! Stay tuned; we just might have something planned… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks for tuning into our PHB survey results, and we’ll see you next time!

TOP 5 PICKS

In the Desertย by happyclonetrooper

Wow, right off the bat I love the ambiance of this work. The warm hues and brilliant lighting really add to the western atmosphere. The composition is well arranged and there are lots of details that fill up the scene! Finding that sort of variety in an otherwise plain landscape can sometimes be a difficult task, but the textures here were nailed. And the presentation leaves me wanting more! Will our hero find her way home, or succumb to the harsh temperatures of her environment? Very smooth execution! Find her DeviantArt here.

Snake Oil Salesmanย by Gentle Dolphin (aka JordynGowens)

Oooh, now this is an interesting take on our theme! While most of us think of El Mustachio Grande when we imagine the Wild West, that’s not the only villain of the desert! Hardcore Poptropica fans will certainly remember R.J. Earl, the infamous salesman of Wild West Island. The tonics and mixtures that he offers may seem “too good to be true,” but… what do you think? Anyway, the attention to detail in this piece is wonderful, making for another vividly atmospheric scene. The lighting is gorgeous, the lineart is smooth and crisp, the items in the shop add great easter eggs, and the colors are brilliant! A truly unique entry with an intriguingly symmetrical composition! Find her DeviantArt here.

Lone Coyote’s Fond Memories by Perfect Fish (aka jaekelopterus3)

Lots of detail in this submission too! The busy composition here presents a lot of information, but truly represents the fun of Wild West Island! With the changes in Poptropica we’re all facing right now, this piece definitely reflects the nostalgia and perhaps worry that we are all feeling. The work has a ton of brilliant energy, making for a whimsical, childlike mood (perfect for Poptropica of course). I love the elements of text, the bold colors, and the vivid texture. Plus, we don’t often get to see Poptropicans portrayed with fingers! Attention can be found in every inch of the paper, for sure! Find the artists in the comment section and on Discord.

Staring Down the Barrel of a Gunย by ray-of-flight

Ah, yet another piece with brilliant lighting! The warm hues, once again, are very appropriate for this month’s theme and make for a particularly interesting color palette. I love the drama found within this scene, especially given the angled lighting and the perspective of the viewer. The foreshortening required in the pose is a difficult one to pull off, but the view of the gun certainly makes the effort worth it. The composition is more straightforward, but that certainly adds to the drama! Excellent work! Find their DeviantArt here.

Ready for the Showdownย by AdventurersNHunters

Here, we see “Sheriff Jackson ‘Red Hunt’ Smith and Deputy Darcy ‘Yellow Stone’ Stone Versus El Mustachio Grande and The Grande Gang.” How exciting! According to the artist, “Red was just visiting his home island while Yellow went there due to what is happening there. Suddenly, Yellow and Red run into eachother and have no choice but to work together, they still hate eachother. Jackson only did to hunt down El Mustachio and claim his reward.” Dun dun duh!!! This piece is definitely filled with drama and excitement, perfectly showcasing a true western showdown. It’s as if it were a movie poster for an old western film! I love all the different characters, the colored blocking within the composition, and the dark shading. Wonderful! Find her DeviantArt here.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Lots of Grande fan art this month, which was super cool!

JUNE: HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what itโ€™s about, itโ€™s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that monthโ€™s theme. So what is June’s theme?ย June’s theme isโ€ฆ

Monochromatic

With June kicking off Pride month and the continued fight for equality, the significance of color never ceases to be prominent. Luckily in art, color is an element for self expression and pride rather than something that divides us. So this month, let’s showcase some color in our amazing community, but with an added challenge!

Monochromatic, if you aren’t familiar, means “one color.” Therefore, I challenge you to submit work that you make using only one color! Remember that different shades and tints of that color, as well as neutrals are allowed. So get creative, and maybe we will be able to feature work from EVERY COLOR OF THE RAINBOW! And if you aren’t into drawing, remember that you can still participate. Perhaps write a story with one color being particularly important, write a poem about all your favorite purple things in Poptropica maybe, or even put together an outfit in Poptropica that’s all one color. It’s all up to you, so let your color shine with pride!

  • Comment below with a link to whatever youโ€™ve created OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as 3 honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as youโ€™d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, Iโ€™m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so donโ€™t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Top 5 Picks

Bunch of Animalsย by T-ropicaNation

During this period of quarantine, I would be surprised if you haven’t heart of the popularity of Nintendo’s Animal Crossing. I know the game has certainly gotten me through some intense boredom lately. But if you aren’t familiar with the game, this is a fantastic introduction to it! The character designs are all super cute, and so it is wonderful to see some of our favorite Poptropica villains pictured in that style. According to the artist, “Rebel is a snooty deer, Copy is a peppy cat, Betty is a sisterly ostrich, Ratman is a smug rat, Crusher is a bear jock, and Speedy is a lazy hamster.” I absolutely love the colors and personality in this composition. Excellent design! Find their DeviantArt here.

Staying Home by Midnightoilstudios

Another subtle nod to Animal Crossing, I see! With a Nintendo Switch in hand, this character is certainly doing what most of us have been doing lately: sitting in bed playing video games. Nothing wrong with that! I love the little details in the composition, such as the photos on the bulletin board and items on the nightstand. They tie into Poptropica excellently, and really add more atmosphere to the scene. The blanket and Switch even match the colors of Binary Bard! Fantastic ideas. Find her DeviantArt here.

Studyingย BY AdventurersNHunters

Oooh, another cool bedroom scene. Inspired by Studio Ghibli’s “Whisper of the Heart,” this composition gives me real lofi vibes. It captures what it’s like to be a student during this odd time, as we attend online classes and try to gather motivation to actually study. Yes, Animal Crossing has been distracting me from school work. I love the dramatic lighting and the little details all around the desk. Just look at that Dr. Hare keychain! A fantastic CJ feature. Find her DeviantArt here.

Staying Homeย by Quick Fang

Aw, what a cute piece! A simple, straight-forward design, but a perfect representation of our theme nonetheless. We all may be stuck inside, which certainly hinders a lot of our routines, but that doesn’t mean we can’t stay positive. I love that we get to feature some animation, and the plain, blocked off colors really remind me of my childhood. Maybe I should use this time at home to learn some animation? Never too late to get into some new hobbies after all. Find the artist in the comment section or on Discord!

Super Hotdog Boyย by ray-of-flight

Ah, I love this piece! Made for the Creators’ “Draw This In Your Style” Challenge of Ned Noodlehead, this work definitely reflects one of the art trends that has resurfaced during quarantine. Whether it be a DTIYS, a SixFanArts Tag, or some other trend, artists around the world have found ways to connect with people online. In this work in particular, I love the comic book vibe that the background gives off. The plain colors and lineart are super smooth, allowing the figure to really pop off the page in a graphic way. Wonderful work all around! Find his DeviantArt here.

Wild West

If I were to describe the current state of the world right now, I think “wild” is a word that comes to mind. Times are kinda crazy and everyone is being affected in different ways. It’s important to remember that we are in this together and that so many people are working hard to improve this situation, but at times it really can feel like the wild west. Illnesses, supply shortages, and empty streets can be seen in every direction. But hey, just look at how well the environment is doing, right?

Anyway, it’s time for you to push away that boredom of being trapped in your house and show me your most creative Wild West creations! I’m talking cowboys, horses, desert scenes, you name it. So bring it on!

Pop Fan Artist Spotlights

๐ŸŽจ Pop Fan Artist Spotlight: T-ropicaNation

What’s up, Poptropicans? It’s LJ with a series from the dead a Pop Fan Artist Spotlight, where I showcase a certain Poptropica fan’s artwork in an effort to give more recognition to their talent; this next artist definitely deserves it. Everyone, I’d like to introduce you to T-ropicaNation (who I will refer to as Nation in this post for a smoother read).

Nation has consistently been posting their Poptropica art online for a few years now, and every illustration is it’s own sensation. Although they primarily keep to their particular cartoonish style, some pieces are very bright and bubbly while others are dark and gloomy โ€” making each one unique.

Take a look at this gallery of some of their best work, including the artist’s proudest piece, “Flowers” (pictured at the bottom left):

Simply amazing! I really like Nation’s use of value and colors, and I find the gigantic eyes on the characters SO flipping adorable. If you feel like I do, you’ll be pleased to know there’s plenty more where that came from. You should totally check out their page on DeviantArt; they have a pretty large Poptropica section, and they really deserve more followers!

Well, the spotlight dims for now. I hope you enjoyed this look into a Poptropica fanโ€™s artwork! (I know, it’s been a long time…๐Ÿ˜…) I encourage you to share any of your own creations to our DeviantArt group if you happen to have any too. Now the question is, who would you like to see in the spotlight next?

Pop 5: Islands I want to see return to Poptropica

Good day, Poptropicans! It’s Lucky Joker here popping into 2020 with one of my first non-news posts, a Pop 5 list. It’s a new decade and that means a new era for Poptropica.

With the new version of Zomberry Island on the horizon (or is it? we’re still waiting…), it feels like the perfect time to start compiling my list of islands I hope to see return to the game one day, in full sound-updated glory. Let’s begin! (If you haven’t played all the old islands: beware, spoilers ahead.)

#5: Mystery Train Island ๐Ÿ”

Starting off this list is Mystery Train Island, which is possibly one of Poptropica’s most popular adventures โ€” and among my personal favorites. Every island has a theme; and the theme of this island is a classic, yet compelling whodunit set in the late Victorian era. How appealing does that sound? Right up my alley, that’s for sure.

I can just imagine how calm and soothing the soundtrack would be with a soft piano playing beautifully if it was sound updated. And can we talk about how awesome the boss level is (or should I say was…)? It’s one of the most climactic scenes in the entire game in my opinion. A crescendo would go along brilliantly with it I’m sure.

#4: Wild West Island ๐ŸŒต

Popping in at the number four spot comes another Poptropica fan favorite โ€” Wild West Island! This Old-West-inspired escapade is full of many fun and exciting moments. With the multitude of western mini-games, lingo, and scenery, this island makes for one special and enjoyable experience that you can 100% immerse yourself into.

As for the soundtrack choice, it’s undeniably unquestionable โ€” western folk music of course! Give Jeff Heim a banjo, a guitar, and a harmonica and I’m sure he could create at least a dozen hillbilly hits. It’s a sound we have yet to hear in Poptropica, I believe.

#3: Super Villain Island โšก

Smack dab in the middle at third place is the super Super Villain Island! I mean, how could an island featuring four of Poptropica’s most prominent wrongdoers not be in this list? In my opinion, SVI has one of the most creative and out-of-the-box concepts โ€” it’s like a cool sci-fi movie or something โ€” and of course, some of Poptropica’s coolest characters.

The roaring storm over the ocean, each of the villains’ dreams, the colossal battle at the end โ€” there are so many great tracks to be made here! I can already hear them now. Super Villain needs to return and there should be no doubt about it.

#2: Game Show Island ๐Ÿค–

Just behind the top pick is the remarkable, robotic extravaganza that is Game Show Island! Sure, it’s not the absolute best to have graced the screen in the past 12 and a half years, but Game Show is arguably one of the most fun islands in the game; I don’t think there’s one Poptropican who doesn’t like it (even if it’s not their favorite). All of the mini-games and funny looking robots totally make the island interesting and amusing. I think having it sound updated would enhance that.

Each location could have a different background song. A modernized gypsy-like tune would be a good choice for the city of Istanbul. It would capture that unique Turkish sound perfectly. As for Japan, I’d like something kawaii, or something highly electric to really get my heart racing during Mr. Yoshi’s Super Terrific Challenge. Russia’s pretty diverse, so perhaps a remix of the national anthem would suffice? In Miami, a rad hip-hop track would definitely work well. And you can surely count on the vibrant sensations of tango to create an atmosphere in Buenos Aires. You could hear the world in one island! (Not to mention all of the mechanic and techy sound ops throughout.)

Honorable Mentions

Alright, before I reveal my number one choice, I wanted to honor a few other beloved islands that almost made this list. Give it up for Super Power Island, Nabooti Island, and Counterfeit Island! They’re all wonderful classics, and totally deserve to be in the top five as well.

And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for. Taking the trophy for the island I’d love to see return most…the astounding, the stupendous, the one and only โ€” it goes to none other than…

#1: Astro-Knights Island ๐Ÿš€

Astro-Knights Island! This thrilling quest is one like no other and is definitely one of my all-time favorites (along with Mythology)! This intergalactic island is jam packed with mythos, action, and adventure โ€” everything Poptropica is all about.

Can’t you just envision a dreary, medieval melody accompanying the crummy streets of a fallen Arturus as you played? I certainly could! In addition, we could get some celestial tunes for when we’re journeying through the stars and an intense orchestral symphony with a battle like dynamic for when we’re defeating the evil Binary Bard.

Astro-Knights is an absolute must play for any Poptropica player and it undoubtedly needs to grace the map once again. What do you think?

And there you have it โ€” the full list of islands that I think should make an epic comeback to Poptropica! (Psst, creators, if you’re reading…I’m sure many others would agree with me, so you know…)

Thank you so much for reading as always and I’ll talk to you all soon. Happy Easter to those who celebrate! ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿค

My aim is egg-cellent, hehe
