Top 5 Picks

Holly Jolly Jester by Kade (aka mintyspinel9hg)

To kick things off: a perfect fit of a fit for the holiday season! I love the playfulness of the costume design and the unique approach to winter-themed attire. It mixes in just a touch of mischievousness with that holiday cheer. And I seriously want that present shooter in game! Find their Instagram here.

Twas the Night Before Grapple-Pap by Dizzy Feather

Next up, we have a wonderful Poptropica-style twist on a classic holiday tale. It’s really fun to see Grapple-Pap take on a story that pretty much everyone can recognize. Plus, the extra attention to composing the text on this wintery background gives it a special touch. Very clever! Find her in the comments and on the PHC Discord.

Grapple-Pap by Tillymeowjings-arsb

Okay, geez, I should have warned you all this would get emotional! With just a few panels, this work definitely packs a punch with its story. The lore of the Baron, Amelia, and all the Fairy Tale Island royalty continues to grow, and so does my investment with these characters. 🥺 The juxtaposition between the warm, bright setting of the past and the cold, dark composition of the present is quite powerful. The visuals add a lot of significance to the dialogue from the airship. Excellent work! Find their Tumblr here.

Bracelet by HeartOfEnder

It was the morning of Grapple-pap. The morning where kids rushed down the stairs to open gifts with their families. A time where as the old saying goes, “if you don’t spread cheer, Grapple-pap will get you for a year.”

Boys asked for cars and action figures. Girls asked for dolls and ponies. That morning they would giggle and laugh with happiness at their new toys, playing with them all day long.

For the Jones family, living in a town with festive decorations up for their occasion, their gift to their son, Felix, was not a toy, but a tool.

As the young boy opened the small box which was the gift from his parents, he was met with a strange bracelet. Unlike the sparkly bracelet with beads girls wore, it was made with a durable, neon orange rope, tied in a way you could unravel it. the rope was connected by a black side connector buckle, like the ones you see on backpacks. A small compass was embedded in the buckle, and even the buckle’s shape was odd, with strange fork prongs inside.

“Daddy, what is this?” The young boy asked, looking up at his parents. His dad smiled, crouching down and explaining it all to him.

“My Fledgling, this is a survival bracelet.” he said, taking the bracelet from the box. “I know you want to explore the world, but there are dangerous things out there. This will help you avoid those dangers.”

“How?” Felix asked, even more interested in the bracelet.

“Think of all the uses for a rope. This survival bracelet can do it all.” His father explained. “It even comes with a knife, which might be the most useful tool ever.” “It’s still too big to fit on your wrist…” Felix’s mother pointed out as the young boy excitedly put the survival bracelet on. “But one day it’ll fit perfectly. I can’t wait for that day!”

Acting as both a Grapple-Pap tale and a short prequel to Felix’s origin in the author’s Aerie of Eagles series, this story serves up a great sense of nostalgia. It has a traditional holiday setting that many kids can reminisce on, and leaves you wanting to know more about where the characters are now. Very interesting introduction! Find their Tumblr here.

Tally Ho-Ho-Ho! by happyclonetrooper

Lastly, we have a hilarious holiday card that I would be happy to receive myself! The artist has remade this card every few years, each purposefully tacky yet increasingly more polished each time. And, I have to admit, the “tally ho-ho-ho” pun is a killer. 😉 I wonder what sort of gifts MVB would give out? Perhaps I don’t want to know the answer… Find her Instagram here.

Amazing work, everyone! It’s always hard to grapple with how talented you all are. From the whole PHB team, we hope you had an amazing holiday season and a great new year! Here’s to an even better 2023.

January: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Pop clubhouses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is January’s theme? January’s theme is…

🤔🧩 Puzzling! 🧩🤔

One of my favorite gameplay elements of Poptropica has always been the puzzles. From playing minigames like mancala on Nabooti Island, to solving mysterious codes on Spy Island or changing the dragon sculpture on Counterfeit Island, puzzles seem to be everywhere when you really think about it!

Some are pretty straight-forward and other are, well… puzzling! But that’s why we have PHB Island Guides to help you out. So as we enter 2023 and start solving a whole new year of puzzles and challenges, let’s take a moment to celebrate the fun ones and share our frustrations on the more difficult ones.

Maybe draw your Poptropican trying to solve a particularly puzzling puzzle, or write a story about your favorite puzzling Poptropica minigame. Perhaps design a costume for what you think the ultimate puzzle-solving master would look like, or even design a Poptropica puzzle yourself! Your work doesn’t even necessarily have to involve a physical puzzle, just something confusing or a brain teaser of sorts will do. The options are up to you! Good luck!

  • Submit: Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created, email it to the PHB team on our Contact page, OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArtTwitterTumblrDiscord, OR the PHB’s Instagram.
  • Results: Next month, I will feature 5 submissions that stood out to me the most as well as some honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Just make sure you relate to both the theme and Poptropica (and nothing NSFW or otherwise inappropriate).
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as you’d like!

I will be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. While quality counts, I’m mainly looking for something to simply catch my eye, so don’t be afraid to join in!

So what are you waiting for? Go make something awesome!

Community Creations: November 2022

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the November recap for Community Creations. October’s theme was Royalty, so be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Elyana & Mordred as Friends by emelyn_is_trying

Aside from the more recent Fairytale Island, Astro-Knights is without a doubt the first island that comes to mind for OG players when they think “Poptropica royalty.” In an alternate reality where an evil Binary Bard didn’t kidnap the princess, Elyana and Mordred could have seriously become great friends. These space nerds just make such a fun pair! Their dynamic poses, expressions, and enhanced outfits make for quite the engaging design too. Find their Instagram here.

Princess Red Baroness by abbeyjoy25

In more recent news involving Fairytale Island, we seem to learn more about the Red Baroness’s mysterious backstory every month. But we have not yet seen her in full princess attire, so this exploration of her potential outfit is super interesting! The design takes inspiration from other Poptropica princesses, including Snow White, Cinderella, and Elyana, of course. She definitely fits the princess aesthetic here, while still retaining her unique color scheme and attitude, making her still recognizable. Excellent idea! Find her Instagram here.

Princess of the Cosmos by HeartofEnder aka Solemn-Siren

Stepping away from pre-established Pop princesses while remaining in a princess theme, this work is inspired by the game Sky: Children of the Light. It is specifically based on a certain crown item from Season of AURORA, except here it’s given a Poptropica twist in style. The original character turned out to have such a unique, eye-catching design! The color scheme and composition feel magical, perfect for royalty from the stars. Very cool submission! Find her DeviantArt here.

Gacha Club Fairytale Island King & Queen by mysticsunni

Back to the realm of Fairytale Island, here we have the infamous Red Queen and her husband. This time made in the Gacha Club character creator! It’s really neat to see how accurate characters from other games can be replicated in another game, rendered in a completely different style but still recognizable. Not to mention how adorable they look! Find their Instagram here.

Rumpel by oneofthosenightbees

Last but certainly not least, we have a character that perhaps was not born into royalty but briefly achieved royal status nonetheless. What do YOU think would happen if Rumpelstiltskin became kind of Fairytale Island for real? This illustration simply demands our attention, directly engaging with the viewer through the character’s eye contact. The color scheme and expression portray a dark, daunting tone with that eye-catching red adding a lot of visual interest. Very intense and captivating! Find her Instagram here.

Hear ye, hear ye… you guys royally crushed it this month! I wish you could all be rewarded with your very own crowns for the highness of your creative standards.

December: How Do I Participate?

 Grapple-Pap!

Way back when the Grapple-Pap side quest first appeared, Poptropica introduced new festive lore into the game that we hadn’t encountered before. The holiday is basically Poptropica’s version of Christmas or other winter-y celebrations, so ’tis the season to celebrate it in our creations! The PHB even hosted a Grapple-Pap holiday party last year.

This month, I’m basically looking for any art that embraces the holiday season, but more so Poptropica’s take on winter festivities. Maybe draw some fanart of the side quest characters like Grapple-Pap himself, or create a cozy costume for your Poptropican perfect for the cold weather. Maybe even try to make an IRL Grapple-Pap mask or even your own Grapple-Pop treat IRL if you’re a whiz in the kitchen? Or simply incorporate IRL winter holidays like Christmas or Hanukkah into the world of Poptropica somehow.

Community Creations: October 2022

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the October recap for Community Creations. October’s theme was Feeling Blue, so be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Baron’s Crusade Quest by Silver Penguin

With all the drama surrounding the Baron lately, I’m glad she showed up in this month’s assortment of creations. The night scene creates a nostalgic atmosphere, and that pop of red and orange light wonderfully contrasts the desaturated blues of the larger composition. Love the rendering of the characters and the stylization in mark-making! Find the artist in the comments.

Looking For That One Item… by Dan N.

Another spooky night scene, I also love the stylization in this creation. The little ghost follower and passing black cat feel perfect for the month of Halloween too. It does a great job of capturing that feeling of searching for an item in Poptropica, particularly as a lone kid in unfamiliar territory. Plus, the dramatic camera angle makes for a super enticing composition and great sense of depth! Find his Instagram here.

Medicine Man by mcz

Talking about dramatic camera angles, this one certainly fits that mark! The blue night sky and glowing green pot go well with the color scheme of the Medicine Man character. Wonderful lighting that really creates a story! Definitely makes me what to revisit Shark Tooth Island. Find their Instagram here.

Human Merlin by Bunnies-N-Bowties

Stepping away from landscape scenes for a moment, here we have a super charming character design. Ever wonder what Merlin would look like in human form? Er- humanoid AI form to be specific. Well, look no further! The hair and clothing both convey strong personality, and I love the inclusion of owl wings to harken back to his other form. Binary Bard has to be a proud papa. Find her Tumblr here and Instagram here.

What Would Have Been by Dizzy Feather

Who knew a blue theme would lead to so many night sky features? In hindsight, I shouldn’t be surprised… Anyway, this simple landscape holds a lot of power by focusing on the silhouettes of its characters. The subtle glow around them and the moon definitely creates a ghostly atmosphere, perfect for the Ghost Story Island setting. And bittersweet blue emotion is evoked too! Find the artist in the comments and on the PHC Discord.

I’m feeling quite blue to see this spooky month come to an end, but had a great time seeing all your amazing blue creations. Keep up that creativity!

👑 ROYALTY! 👑

With the recent reveal of the Red Queen and the drama surrounding the Baron and Rumpelstiltskin, royalty has certainly been making the rounds lately. Leaning into all that drama this coming month, let’s see what your royal creations will bring!

Maybe create your own King or Queen costumes in-game, or draw pictures of the Astro-Knights royal family? Maybe write stories theorizing the Baron’s royal past, or design your own throne room in your clubhouse. The possibilities are up to you!

Community Creations: September 2022

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the September recap for Community Creations. September’s theme was Survival, so be sure to check out all the featured artists!

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

How to Survive Off Path in the Dark Woods of Fairytale Island by Dizzy Feather (Little Pear)

To kick things off, we have a super unique submission! It presents a mixture of art and literature, which really brings the handbook-style short story to life. There is a lot of creative lore included that shows great attention to detail and imagination, expanding on what Fairytale Island (not Survival Island, but still clearly survival themed!) already gives us. Love the layout! Find her in the comments and on the PHC Discord.

Survival by Megan123456

Taking a step away from sepia, this submission has such beautiful, bright colors! It makes for quite the eye-catching scene and creates wonderful atmosphere in the environment. This is especially reinforced with the snow and flame texture. The effect also interestingly contrasts the freezing cold of the forest with the intense warmth of the fire, which is definitely reminiscent of Survival Island. Find her in the comments and on the PHC Discord.

Survivor Island – The Greatest Game by krazytalez

Here we have another bit of sequential work, this one featuring Silly Chicken’s time on Survival Island. An adventure—with both the excitement and the fear—I’m sure all of our Poptropicans remember! I enjoy seeing these little snapshots into different parts of the episodic quest in this format. The night vision adds an especially cool effect! Find their Instagram here, where you can find more from this comic series.

Survival Island by Doubletheblame

Another great snapshot of Survival Island, this design really captures that feeling of uncertainty when experiencing the story. There is a simultaneous atmosphere of total isolation and constant sense of being watched. It’s especially intriguing to see Myron’s point of view in this side-by-side! The layout of the camera and the reverse shot of the villain comes across as quite cinematic. Find her DeviantArt here.

Myron Animation by tillymeowjings-arsb

Though sans-mustache, this reanimation of an earlier post shows great personality—and amazing artistic growth! Lip-syncing is a challenging skill to master on top of drawing in general. And this short little video came out so smooth! I really enjoy the style of the character and the adorable facial expressions, all paired so some fantastic audio. Find her Tumblr here.

Looks like we not only survived this month but thrived this month, guys. 💪 These creations were to die for, as always!

💙💎😢 Feeling Blue! 😢💎💙

According to the Pop Creators, Poptropica isn’t just blue… it’s cerulean. But hey, there are plenty of cool shades of blue out there, so why stick to just the one? Still, I hope all the other colors aren’t green with envy.

For this set of creations, anything blue goes. That means the color and the feeling! If you draw me a picture, I wanna see everything from cobalt to navy, to sky and baby! If you write me a short story, I better feel all the feels and start tearing up by the end.

Though I exaggerate a bit, you get the idea. Think about all your favorite Poptropicans with blue outfits, or all your favorite blue background art. Think about the saddest moments from each island, and all that blue ocean our characters have to traverse. And be sure to keep an eye out for our annual Halloween Costume Contest this month as well!

Top 5 Picks

Pop Culture: OTP in 80s Fashion by BunniesNBowties

Okay… so someone needs to tell me where to get that jacket and that button-up IRL, because I’m living for these looks. Starting as a request on Tumblr, the way that this design evolved into a magazine cover is awesome. The poses certainly match the tabloid composition, and all the text adds so much flavor to the image. The fits are iconic, and I’m loving how they still match each other while each having their own colorful patterned items. Find their Tumblrs here and here.

Walking in the 80s by XMzhier

Speaking of colorful, I’m really impressed with the use of colors in this image! It’s quite the challenge to use such bright, harsh tones without coming across as too bright, but there’s a perfect balance of subdued hues here to keep things looking nice. The side profile walking composition is super fun, and I love seeing all the little 80s refences in the background text. Though you will not be forgiven for Rick Rolling me… Anyone else get the urge to just listen to lofi beats and chill? Stunning work on the outfit designs and entire layout! Find their Twitter here.

Party in the 80s by Dizzy Feather & Love Feather

This long horizontal composition is really unique, and uses an interesting way to present all the different outfits. I especially love the different poses of the Poptropicans, which elevate the image from a still display of clothes to a rather engaging scene. Plus, the diner setting, funky colors, and bold accessories certainly belong in the 80s. Wonderful idea to include so many looks! Find the artists in the comments and on Discord.

80s Island Idea by iHateFridays

80s Island (most likely a placeholder name) will basically just be a big homage to sci-fi movies that came out during the time, such as Star Wars, Back to the Future, etc.

The island would start off with the player landing near a disco. A time traveler would show up and start crying about how there’s going to be an alien invasion, however no one takes him seriously. The time traveler looks upset and the player feels sorry for him, telling him they believe him. The two of you then decide to work together to stop the alien invasion.

The two of you track down an alien in disguise (most likely in a minigame), which is at a VHS store. There is a mini boss battle with the alien, with some 80s music playing in the background. The battle involves the alien chucking different VHS tapes at you, which transport you to different locations depending on the tapes.

The next alien is at a roller skating place. The boss battle involves a skating-themed minigame where you have to avoid the roller-themed attacks the alien throws at you.

After that is back to the disco place at the start, where this time there are multiple aliens you have to hunt down. You and the time traveler guy do some detective work, which would involve some problem-solving minigames. You manage to interrogate one of the aliens, who escapes but you steal its weapon.

You have to do some more problem solving to find the rest of the aliens, as well as using your newly acquired weapon to take them out. At some point you brag about how the weapon made it a lot easier.

When it seems you’ve taken out all the aliens, it’s suddenly revealed that the time traveler was an alien all along!! A UFO lands on the island and aliens appear everywhere, and your weapon is also destroyed.

All hope seems lost, but the people of the island aren’t willing to give up yet and you all work together to fight the aliens. There’s a big massive boss fight with some of the lower minions, eventually leading to the time traveler himself. You also get an even cooler alien weapon. You trade some edgy dialogue and eventually your Poptropican wins, sending the aliens away for good.

Honestly, this island sounds like it would be super fun to play. The story allows for interesting characters, amazing design opportunities, and a captivating story that a lot of people may like. Maybe something the writer should keep in mind for any future Dream Island contests? It would also introduce some vintage settings and details to an ever younger and younger Poptropica audience. Find their Twitter here.

80s Poptropican by Super Jumper

Now, this color-popping outfit definitely gives me 80s vibes. With the cherry earrings, black pumps, and even root beer handheld item, this look would be really fun to see in store. I love the loud colors and the accessories would look great mixed and matched with tons of outfits! A wonderful submission for the monthly costume contest, for sure. Find the artist in the comment section.

With all these awesome submissions this month, it really felt like we traveled back in time a bit. It was a blast to see all these loud colors and fun references! Keep up that creativity next month.

September: How Do I Participate?

🌲🐻 SURVIVAL! 🐻🌲

As back-to-school season enters full swing, sometimes in face of piles of homework and tests there’s only one thing you can try to do: survive. Not to mention how unbearably hot it still is outside for me. And, of course, there’s Survival Island in Poptropica too, which includes Episode 2: Hook, Line, and Sinker for members only.

I’d like to emphasize Survival Island in this month’s theme not only for those reasons but also because it can sometimes feel like Poptropica as a game is barely surviving as is. The fandom certainly keeps the dream alive, but with news like Poptropica Jr. it’s difficult to see the direction the original game is headed in.

But nonetheless, let’s keep surviving and thriving with this month’s set of creations! Anything related to Survival Island obviously goes, but so does anything that could relate to the general concept of “survival.” Maybe draw your favorite scene from the island, or create your best apocalypse survival outfit. Even write a story of your Poptropican surviving in the woods or try on your best Myron Van Buren cosplay for size. We can survive this month together!
