Poptropica & Education: Original vs Worlds

This post originally appeared on Clawtropica and is being shared on the PHB courtesy of the author, Purple Claw. If interested, you too can write for the PHB!

pop education

Hey there, Poptropicans! It’s me, Purple Claw, here to talk about a question I’ve been asking myself for a while now: Is Poptropica Worlds a more educational game than Poptropica Original? Let’s take a look.

To answer the question, we have to do a little research involving a pop down memory lane…

WHAT’S EDUCATIONAL ABOUT POPTROPICA ORIGINAL?

Although Poptropica is more on the entertainment side than educational, it does have some learning benefits. Or, at least it started out like that — Poptropica’s first three islands were pretty educational. Here’s why:

Early Poptropica and Shark Tooth Island had two very similar buildings: they both had museums. One being an art museum, and another full of shark facts; you get the idea.

The Pop Art museum is pretty much like any art museum, but what stood out the most was were the questions you could ask each artist — questions about their drawings, their personal life (such stalkers we are), etc. It’s pretty fun. The Shark Museum, on the other hand, simply had facts about sharks, but even that was literally my absolute favorite part of the island.

Time Tangled Island is one of Poptropica’s most educational islands, and unlike the first two islands mentioned, it’s got a different method for integrating education. Before it became a sound-updated island (SUI), you could find some circles around the island leading to articles from Fact Monster, a Poptropica sponsor and educational website where you can get help with homework and stuff. (It’s actually pretty fun.)

This was a new thing for Poptropica, but it didn’t last long with the release of 24 Carrot Island, and I’m glad, since those Fact Monster monstrosities can really get in the way of your gameplay. Glad I never got to experience them.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for some other players) the following islands stopped being educational in an obvious way (examples: 24 Carrot, Super Power, Big Nate). Nabooti did have a small artifact museum, but besides that, maybe they wanted to focus more on entertainment.

This all changed with the release of Counterfeit Island, which fell in the ”museum-kind-of-educational-island” category. The following islands of Poptropica weren’t all educational: but there were still plenty that drew inspiration from real-life environments, such as Red Dragon, Mythology, Arabian Nights, etc.

So, we can all probably see how Poptropica Original can be educational, but what about Poptropica Worlds?

WHAT’S EDUCATIONAL ABOUT POPTROPICA WORLDS?

Well, since Poptropica Worlds has a grand total of two islands, there isn’t too much to say about it yet (I’m excluding Home Island here, since it’s not really a quest like the others). But I’ll give it a shot.

Well, just like Poptropica’s first two islands, Poptropica Worlds has decided to have museums, and I’ve got to say, it does much better job than Early Pop and Shark Tooth.

Crisis Caverns’ museum is the Visitor’s Center, which has displays with facts about the supervolcano and other geological things. The building itself is an important part of the island, since it plays a part in moving the plot forward by [mild spoiler] giving the park ranger the elk antlers.

On the other hand, Early Poptropica’s Pop Art Museum had nothing in common with the island (well, it had one thing in common if you count the fact that it’s the pop art museum), but besides that, it didn’t add anything to the plot, so things were less interesting there.

Back to Worlds, the remastered 24 Carrot is simply gorgeous — it’s literally what made me like Worlds in the first place! The plot was improved and the visuals were really pretty. But, since Poptropica Words still isn’t much of a social game yet, what was once the common room on the old 24 Carrot had become a Carrot Museum. Which isn’t really all that bad, because just like on Crisis Caverns, this museum also moved the plot forward.

By the way, you can view all the displays for various Poptropica museums without logging into the game by checking out the PHB Island Guide pages with Museum sections.

WHICH GAME IS MORE EDUCATIONAL?

Well, as of now, I’d have to say… drumroll pleasePoptropica Original.

Why? Well, for one major thing, it has more islands, which means more variety. But considering the trend on Worlds of the museums being integrated into the islands, I believe Poptropica Worlds will also be considered a pretty educational game. After all, the island museums are pretty fun to look through, and you’re bound to go into them at some point during the quests.

Poptropica Original has had its doses of learning about the world in various forms – from the obvious museums to the less conspicuous designs that might spark your interest in subjects like spies, mythical creatures, or certain historical figures. And from what we’ve seen so far, the Creators have been doing an even better job on that with Poptropica Worlds. I hope it continues.

#FreeThe15: finally free!

Slip here. Congratulations, Poptropicans! We’ve won free stuff!

In honor of the #FreeThe15 Challenge, the Creators have released, as promised, a whole bunch of new home decor you can find in the Home Store. Check out all the stuff!

house

ICYMI, the recently-concluded challenge had Poptropica fans takings snapshots of their ice cream machines inside their homes—quite peculiar, but free items, yay! A lot of players have joined in the challenge and this is what we get in return, which is pretty sweet! (pun intended)

Moreover, because of the fans’ unwavering and overwhelming support, the Creators decided to add 5 more home decorations—making it a total of 20 items! Here are the newly-added decors in the Home Store (click to enlarge the images):

Interestingly though, I’ve counted a total of 21 sweet new decor items for the house instead of 20. In spite of that, it’s still really cool to have new stuff: we’ve got a drumset, a shower, a chandelier, a shark statue, a baseball, and even a pet iguana!

Why don’t you play Poptropica Worlds to get your hands on the 21 brand new items on the Home Store! Time to redecorate our houses! What do you think of the #FreeThe15 challenge? Don’t forget to leave your thoughts below!

Random theory:  I don’t know if you’ll believe me, but don’t you think that the Skullduggery Island painting foreshadows something? Are the Creators remastering Skullduggery, one of the hardest Poptropica islands, in Poptropica Worlds? What do you think?

skullduggery.

Anyway, stay awesome!

Heyo, readers! It’s me, Purple Claw!

The Poptropica fandom is full of talented artists, fun YouTubers, bloggers, and more! Although we’re proud of what we have here on the PHB, we think you’d be missing out if you didn’t also check out all the other awesome creative work that goes on in the Poptropica community. So, in this post, we’re going to show you how you can discover many of these Poptropica fan creators!

In the past few months, so many blogs were created in this community that we simply had to do something about it.  Thus, the Poptropica Bloggers Network was created by Hyper Gamer and me, and it’s been going strong for several months now. Check it out here!

Our goal with the PBN is to help smaller Poptropica blogs, even those that are just starting out, to grow and become more popular. If you’re interested in seeing what else goes on in the Poptropica community outside of the PHB, check out the list below of all our current PBN partners:

As you can see, there are a lot of blogs that have joined the PBN, and I’m really glad about that. Smaller Poptropica blogs deserve a chance to shine and become more well-known in the community, and the PBN is here to help you on that journey.

Blogging is a fun hobby, and if you have a Poptropica blog yourself, you might consider joining our network. Or if you’re not a blogger yet, but you want to give it a chance, guess what? Starting is easy! You can build a free blog by using WordPress.com, Blogger, or another website creation tool.

If you’re interested in joining the PBN, head over to this page to review our guidelines, then leave a comment with the required info. We’ll get back to you!

There are many benefits to joining our network, including:

  • Get listed in the Our Popping Sites page along with your blog’s slogan.
  • Have your blog’s RSS feed added to the PBN Blog page so people can see your posts.
  • Get your events, contests, or parties advertised in the Community Events page.
  • Have a personal emoji of your blog on the PBC.

The PHB isn’t the only Poptropica blog around – you might want to read more than one! Each blogger has a unique style and fun ideas and I hope you’ll be willing to give their awesome content a chance!

At the beginning of this post, I mentioned artists and YouTubers along with bloggers. While the PBN is just for blogs, there is a lot more Poptropica content waiting to be discovered in those other realms as well – which you can discover in our newly-revamped Poptropica Fandom Community Directory right here on the PHB!

The PHB’s Directory is organized by multiple categories for you to explore: PHB-owned sites, the Creators on social media, VIP fans handpicked by the Creators, active fan sites – and you can add yours too! Check it out under the PHB’s Community tab!

Hello, everyone!

Lucky Joker here sharing some great news for yous today. April is ending and May is just around the corner, so as may be expected – two new Islands of the Month will soon be playable for extra credits (500 for first-time finishers and 300 for replays)!

But this time (and as we’ve done once before in the past), we the Poptropicans get to decide one of May’s IoTM (the other one is yet to be announced). The choices this time around are Twisted Thicket Island and Nabooti Island.

Vote for the May Island of the Month on Poptropica!.jpg

Islands of the Month for May, eh? Does this suggest that Poptropica Worlds won’t release next month? We’ll have to wait and see.

The poll ends punctually at midnight ET on Thursday, April 27, so head on over to the Creators’ Blog and cast your vote!

Poptropican Meme Face Mondays: The Grand Finale

Heyyo Poptropicans, it’s Ultimate iPad Expert here.

TimeToStop.gif

That’s right. Welcome everyone to Round 70, the grand finale of PMFM (Poptropican Meme Face Mondays)!

PMFMTheGrandFinale.png

PMFM has lasted 17 months, with 70 rounds (plus a couple of specials) and a whopping 250+ meme faces (if you include birthday memes and others – 213 if you don’t). It’s honestly kind of crazy at this point.

Really, as cheesy as it is, I couldn’t have made PMFM what it has been without all of you. All of the readers, commenters, and especially those who asked for meme faces: you kept this going.

My mission for this series has been to bring a little fun and happiness to everyone. And whether or not PMFM achieved this for you personally, I appreciate all the support it’s gotten that has has helped keep it alive for so long.

But as we all know, everything must come to an end at some point, whether we like it or not. And so, in case you hadn’t picked up on the word finalePMFM is officially over. But that is not all…

Just over two years ago, I made my first post here on the PHB after a set of unexpected events. This brought about something in my life. It began a new chapter. Although I had been in the community before, I’d never been quite as involved up until then. Here, where there were so many great people, I met many who, to this day, are some of my best friends.

But now we’re here. In just two years, I’ve watched authors come and leave. I’ve watched a lot of change in the community, for both good and bad. Yet regardless of flaws, I still love this community.

That said, the time has come for me to leave this community.

There are plenty of reasons I can give, but primarily, I’m just not the same person anymore. I suppose there’s an aspect of “growing up” that is bringing me to this place. I’m learning to drive, I have a couple of job interviews this week, I’m going to nationals for debate, I’ve been improving my health greatly, and I also get to vote this year. All new to me.

This isn’t to say I don’t like Poptropica or the community, or that I think it’s just for kids or anything. I still love Poptropica and this community. I still love so many of the great people. I’m just not the same person I was.

So it’s time for me to move on. After today, I’m leaving the PHB, the PHC, and basically just leaving the community as a whole. I’m sure I’ll stop by occasionally, but for all intents and purposes, I’ll be gone. I hate to make it so sudden, but this is just how it’s going to be.

I wish luck to the community, the PHB, whatever deserved author replaces me here, and to everyone who reads this message. You have all forever made a mark in my life which will never leave me. You’ll be in my prayers. Thank you.

And with that, Meme King out. 👑
