Wrenching with Zombies, Bears, and more!

Hey Poptropicans! ๐Ÿ˜€

It’s been an unusually busy week inย Poptropica, particularly with the release of the new tutorial, Monkey Wrench Island! If you need a helping hand, or just want to see what it’s about, check out our newย Monkey Wrench Island Guide, complete with pictures. ๐Ÿ™Š๐Ÿ”ง

Did you know? If you previously won the Home/Hub Island medallion from doing the old tutorial, it stays in your medallion collection but can no longer be won, making it a rare extra medallion that adds to your total medallion count! (There is only one other like that: 24 Carrot BETA Carrotene.) Playing the new tutorial gives you the new Monkey Wrench Island Medallion.

Over on the Daily Pop, we’re seeing some pretty interesting sneak peeks! Several of them feature some puzzle/arcade (?) games or environments featuring meandering zombiesย and a cap-wearing character. There’s also a pic of aย jukebox (perhaps a feature for the Skydock/Home Island update?), and an animation-in-progress that contains the building from PoptropiCon.

What are your theories on these sneak peeks? ๐Ÿ˜›

โ€“

There’s currently an ad for We Bare Bears on Home Island, and watching the video will award you a Bear Stack that you can wear on your head! That is, if you can bear it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

That’s not all! On Mystery of the Map Island, there’s an ad for Capri Sun Organic, which awards two prizes: Rocket Skateboard (an animation with you riding said skateboard) and Ball Storm Power (animation of balls falling)! Thanks to Hyper Gamer for the tip and picture.

Are you going to be in Massachusetts on Thursday, March 10th? Jeff Kinney’s bookstore (An Unlikely Story – 111 South Street Plainville, MA 02762) will be hosting Kory Merritt (illustrator of Mystery of the Map, Poptropica’s graphic novel releasing March 1st) that day from 4:00pm to 5:30pm EST! If you plan to go (and if you are in the area, it would be awesome if you did), it’s free but you should probably register. Kory will talk and sign book copies, and Jeff Kinneyย will be there too!

If any of you PHB readersย out there are lucky enough to get to go, say hi to the Poptropica Creators from the PHB for us! (Plus we would love to hear any details of your experience! Pictures are a plus.)

Don’t forget: This week only, you can win twice the amount of credits for finishing four science-themed islands (Steamworks, Lunar Colony, Shrink Ray,ย Virus Hunter) for the first time in honor of Engineers Week! Offer ends Saturday, February 27th. Get ’em while you can!

Year of the Monkeying-Around with Dragons and Villains!

Kung hei fat choi,ย Poptropicans! ๐ŸŽ‰

It’s the Year of the Monkey for those of you celebrating the Lunar New Year, and there’s a new update on the Creators’ Blog honoring the occasion. ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ’

Also, we get a sneak peek of a monkeyย that’s supposed to be part of an upcoming island. (Past sneak peeks indicate this island could be related toย the Poptropica comics or the upcoming tutorial update!)

Captain Crawfish also addedย in his post: “Plus, if you know where there’s a misplaced Chinese dragon on another Poptropica Island, we don’t want to hear about it anymore.”

Sounds like this pirateย isย salty. XD

chinese dragon

As someone who’sย Chinese, I found the comment hilarious.

In case you’re not laughing yet, there’s a distinctly Chinese dragon dance happeningย on a Japanese island (Red Dragon, which takes place in ancient Japan) on Poptropica and it sounds like they’ve been getting quite a bit of flack for mixing it up. ๐Ÿ˜›

(Plus, thanks to Thinknoodles videos for being a source forย grabbing quick snapshots!)

Chinese New Year isn’t the only thing happening โ€“ Valentine’s Day is coming up, and rather than taking it as a time to feel sad at a lack of significant other, here at the PHB we’d like to deliver you some villainous Poptropica Valentine’s cards! These were created by Poptropicans from our deviantArt community, We-Love-Poptropica.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Octavian’s is made by JennLikesPie, Black Widow’s is by Slippery Raptor, and salty old Captain Crawfish’s is by Spotted Dragon. Feel the love! โค

Also, if you’d like to have your name in the upcoming PHB Valentine’s Special, be sure to check out Blake’s post on the subject and leave a comment with your favorite PHB ship (no later than Wednesday, and try not to go overboard ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). Stay popping, Poptropicans!

Poptropica Portfolio: Abraham Evensen Tena

Hey Poptropicans! ๐Ÿ˜€

It’s been a while since we’ve featured a Poptropica artist’s portfolio here on the PHB โ€“ if you haven’t already, check out the works of Chris Goodwin and Nate Greenwall.

This next one has been around for a while, but we’re finally getting around to posting about it: the portfolio of Poptropica illustrator Abraham Evensen Tena! (The character of Gamer Guy, or Abe on Zomberry Island, is most likely modeled after him.) You can check out the works we’re highlighting in this post and more on his portfolio website.

Perhaps the most interesting pictures from Abe’sย portfolio are these glimpses of the forgotten underground island that we’ve seen sneak peeks of in past Daily Pops. It’s a land lined with pink crystals, flowing streams, and even dinosaur bones! I for one would love to playย this island someday.

The rest of the Poptropica-related art on his site are mostly desktop wallpapers for islands we’ve already seen, some illustrations he made for the Poptropica Lunar Colonyย chapter book, and other miscellaneous concept art. Here’s a look at some moreย piecesย (click to enlarge the artwork):

If you check out his website, you’ll find even more Poptropica pieces. You can also see some of his personal non-Poptropica work on other parts of the site, but be warned that some of his (non-Poptropica) illustrations contain nudity, so only proceed if you are comfortableย with that.

Abe Tena’sย resume states thatย he worked as a game designer (most likely for Poptropica) fromย October 2010 to July 2015,ย which means he no longer works there.ย Right now, though, he’sย an assistant professorย specializing in human figure drawing at theย Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, the cityย whereย Poptropica HQย is located. How cool would it be to have a Poptropica Creator be your art teacher?

Anyway, hope you enjoyed this look into a Poptropica artist’s portfolio! Thanks to Abe for all the fantastic ideasย and artwork he’s contributed to the game we know and love. ๐Ÿ™‚

Pop Pals, Stolen Snapshots, and History Happenings

Hey Poptropicans! What’s popping?

February is here, and that means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! (As well as spring, if a certain psychic groundhog is to be believed.) Recent Daily Pop sneak peeks indicate that we may soon be getting aย Valentine’s Photo Booth with some cool props:

Here on the PHB, we’ve added yet another new page under our Cool Stuff tab:ย Stolen Snapshots, a puzzle game originally from Slippery Raptor’s Blog! This game tests your Poptropica recognition skills with currently over 25 pictures to guess from, andย Slip’s siteย is always coming up with new ones (plus you can guess hisย current puzzle for a chance to be in hisย Hall of Fame!). Check it out!

In case you missed it,ย another recent “Cool Stuff” release was a page titledย Overview of Poptropica Glitching, where we explore the strangelyย wonderfulย world of exploiting Poptropica glitches.

We also recently released (most of) the results from our 2016 PHB Readers’ Survey, with tons of interactive graphs and charts and analyses for each question! Part 2, featuring comments from the response questions, is on its way โ€“ so stay tuned.

Plus, our dearย Creator-senpais have even commented on the post! With the exception of Jeff Heim’s comment during the PHB Poppies last summer, that’s a first! We’re very honored and hope they continue to do so. ๐Ÿ˜€ All the more reason for PHB lurkersย to join the fun in the comments, eh? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Speaking of making PHBย history, the History of the PHB page (under the “About” tab) has now been updated to give a summaryย on the past year of 2015.ย Check it out!

It’s also been really cool having you guys share your Poptropica projects and more over on our Poptropica Help subreddit, and if you’re not already on it, we would love to have you join the fun!ย I’ve even got an Ask Me Anything (AMA) thread going on, so if you have any off-topica questions forย me at all, that’s aย place to get to know me. ๐Ÿ˜€ Don’t miss out โ€“ sign up and post on our subreddit today!

Jungle mysteries, monkeys, elves, and more!

Hey Poptropicans!

Poptropica’s been a bit quiet lately, and even the Daily Pop has less sneak peeks this month than usual. Still, there are some pretty interesting pics hinting at what’s to come:

That’s quite a bit to take in! Are the monkeys and jungle scenes related, and if so, might they be part of the new tutorial island the Creators are working on? At least we think theย hot air balloon is.

Also, looks like a Photo Booth is coming to Mystery of the Map (MotM) Island โ€“ presumably with the release of the print version of the graphic novel, expected this March! Andย what’s with the MotM fort with dodos? Plus, why does the left character in “Terra Firma” look suspiciously similar to an original character design by Poptropica player Bony Hopper?? The mysteries are many.

Check out the PHB’sย Daily Pop Sneak Peek Archive for more sneak peeks!

Earlier this week, the Creators also tweeted out these planning sketches from the Twisted Thicket Island files. Check out all those fancy curls and leafy bits. Which elf design is your favorite?

On a different note, we have a new page on the PHB under the Cool Stuff tab: Overview of Poptropica Glitching! Also, hang on for the results of theย 2016 PHB Readers’ Survey! We were hoping to have the results up by now, butย due to delay, they will be coming later this week. ๐Ÿ™‚
