Pop Fan Artist Spotlight: Slanted Fish

Hello, Poptropicans, and welcome to another Pop Fan Artist Spotlight! It’s Lucky Joker here, and today I’m featuring the art of the one and only Slanted Fish!

As the primary graphic creator for the PHB, Slanted Fish’s creations can been seen all over the site, such as in the header at the top! As you’ll see, there’s a very distinct look to her art with the unique shapes, textures, and patterns she uses. Fishy often draws in a Poptropica-like style, but also experiments with other styles too.

The lost jewels of Poptropica

Hey, guys! It’s time to uncover some more lost items from the depths of the Poptropica files. Thanks to idk for sharing these gems with us on the PHC. Let’s get started!

Below, we have two jewels that could have appeared in Nabooti Island: the Lumbar Jewel and the Third Eye Jewel. There are some interesting differences between these scrapped jewels and the final in-game jewels. The scrapped jewels have mystical names rather than just being referred to by their respective colors (for example, Lumbar Jewel vs. Orange Jewel), and they lack the strange inscriptions that the in-game jewels possess.

 

The Third Eye Jewel doesn’t look like any of the seven jewels in the game. It’s not quite blue or purple—probably indigo. On the other hand, the Lumbar Jewel might be the orange jewel that’s found on the Nabooti Monument; it might be in the game but not as a collectible item. idk said, “Take the exact details with a grain of salt. The item card data was never finalized, meaning some details are a little off, like the card’s background color and text size.”

idk also found a lost scene from Reality TV Island. He said: “[It’s] an image of Reality TV Island’s beta found in an old Viewmaster ad. It appears the scene was located directly to the left of the main camp and was called ‘The Thick Jungle’.”

Lego Island for all, new gifts for members, and costumes for the dead

Hey, guys! It’s time to leggo of our worries and gift ourselves with the knowledge of new updates. I promise you won’t feel dead after hearing about these!!! 😀 (I’ll see myself out… just kidding.)

The Creators have been busy updating Poptropica with new features and perks for all players. For example, Home Island was given a complete redesign less than two weeks ago, and the Blast-Off Arcade was accidentally released a mere two days ago! And now:

Lego Island has officially been released on Poptropica Original!

It’s been almost nine months since the previous island, Greek Sea Odyssey, was released to players on Poptropica Worlds. Now, for the first time in forever, a new island has appeared, and on Poptropica Original nonetheless. We showed you unofficial sneak peeks before, and now you can access Lego Island from the map on Pop Original.

At this point, Lego Island consists of a Main Street scene containing three ads, each advertising a different Lego product. The three ads that are currently on Lego Island are for LEGO Boost, LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, and LEGO Friends. The ads for Boost and Ninjago have already appeared before on Poptropica Original.

On the far right, you will find the ad for LEGO Boost. All you need to do is watch the video to get a Robot Cat Follower.

The ad to the right is for the LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu series. Go inside and talk to Zane to start the mini-game. Repeatedly click your mouse to jump over the obstacles on the ground, and release to avoid the ones from above.

After completing the mini-game, you will win two awesome prizes: a Shadow Ninja costume and a Dragon Follower!

The ad on the far right is for LEGO Friends. Enter the building and talk to Stephanie to start the mini-game, which is a scavenger hunt. Your goal is to find the eleven items on your checklist.

After finding all eleven items, you will receive two items of your own: a Wind Surfboard and a Wave Runner.

These are the only ads on Lego Island at the moment. A recent post on the Creators’ Blog encouraged fans to check the island often as new items are added. It’s likely that more ads will appear and replace already existing ads on the island as updates come and go. If you’re paid member, you get to keep your prizes even after the ad campaigns end.

Speaking of paid members, a new trio of member gifts have arrived just in time for November! As always, members will automatically receive these gifts upon logging into Poptropica Original. This month, members will receive a Wolf Costume, and Sheep Costume, and a Scarecrow Costume.

One thing I want to mention is that these costumes are accessed through the Costumizer. This time, members can pick and choose what pieces of the costume they want to wear, as opposed to the whole costume being put onto the player. (Don’t worry, non-members. You can get the Wolf Costume by using this ASG. 😉 )  

Last but not least, the Creators’ Blog celebrated Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with a celebratory post on November 2. The post contained a brief description of the Mexican holiday along with its origins and traditions.

If you like the costumes shown in the picture, you can get them for free in the store. The girls’ costume was designed by our very own Lucky Joker, the winner of Poptropica’s Halloween costume design contest! Be sure to get these costumes before the next store update comes and takes them away to the afterlife…

Teen Titans Blast Off… to the Arcade!

Hello, Poptropicans, how’s it going? It’s Lucky Joker here along with the all-new Blast-Off Arcade on Home Island!

Just yesterday the arcade was accidentally released ( I say ‘accidentally’ because the “Coming Soon” tape has not yet been removed), and it’s been pretty popular so far. I’ve already gone in myself and must I say it looks out of this world! Here’s a full picture of the beta version from PHC frequent, idk:

It’s worth noting that slight changes have been made to this version that makes it different to what we actually see in the game. Examples include the games “Blasteroids!” & “Crash-Derby!” being changed to “Blaster Crazy!” & “Crash-n-Bash!”, as well as more bouncy creatures being added all throughout the room. Let’s take a more thorough look into each of these games…

Head-to-Head:

In this machine are three of the eight classic multiplayer games we all know and love, which include: Balloons, Sky Dive, and Star Link.

Poptastic!:

In this single-player game, all you have to do is pop the balloons before they get to close simply by clicking on them.

Blaster Crazy!:

This single-player game looks to be an advertisement for the LEGO Star Wars play sets. First, choose player, then, dodge and blast obstacles by moving your mouse around and pressing the space bar.

Crash-n-Bash!:

This game is also an advertising single-player game — this time for the movie Cars 3. In this game, you have three character options to choose from, where you’ll race and dodge obstacles by moving your mouse around.

In less exciting news, a new ad has surfaced — this time for Teen Titans Go! from Cartoon Network — and is accessible via the island map.

There are two prizes to be collected, and to get them, you must watch the video advertisement for the first one, and play the game for the second one. After the video finishes, you are immediately taken to the game.

To complete the game, all you have to do is continuously press your space bar to blast upcoming obstacles without losing any of your six lives — it’s pretty easy actually. 🙂

Once you do so, you’ll earn a really cool Beast Boy Power card and a Beast Boy Costume.

What beautiful colors! Anyone in the comments an Ocean Man fan? I think most people know by now that I’m a sucker for a cool galaxy aesthetic. The colors in this piece are magical and blend together seamlessly without line-art (a talent I personally struggle with). Binary Bard looks perfectly glassy-eyed and ominous, giving the painting a mysterious tone. As eerie (apropos of this spooky season) as the scene is, however, I still have the urge to take that darn space man’s hand??? The facial expression and setting are utterly hypnotizing. Great mood! Another well-blended palette! The monochromatic color scheme of red really makes the green of Dr. Hare’s eyes pop, giving the hue a poisonous look. This piece’s aesthetic is not quite as eerie as the last, but it is certainly just as ominous. The strokes in the color are super soft and the silhouettes in the background add lots of interest to an otherwise simple composition. Once again, a quite ominous tone! This drawing seems straight out of a movie poster, consisting of a dramatic and interesting composition. Lots of detail went into each character, with thought even put into the villainous silhouettes. The evil, threatening mood efficiently intrigues the viewer into the piece’s underlying story and the expressions clearly demonstrate the characters’ emotions. Amazing design! Who thought we’d have a submission without an ominous tone, huh? With a theme like “villains,” it can be hard to focus on the softer, cuter sides of characters. Still, in this piece Copy Cat, a classic baddie, is given a bit of a stylish, modern twist. The bubble tea and the casual, yet realistic posture of the figure adds another level of interest for the drawing, which would otherwise be a bit simple in composition. The overall purple hue softens up the character quite a bit, while still maintaining an appropriate aesthetic. Soft, subtle detail is skillfully included in the hair and clothes, which beautifully add to the realistic design. Find her DeviantArt here.

Now designs like this are unique! I love to see original characters from Poptropicans in the community, but MissEligon (and Criaha of course) always takes it one step further. These characters are a continuation of the artist’s first batch of fan villains, with each design being totally different from the last. One thing I love about these collections are the diversity that they demonstrate, with a variety of personalities, backgrounds, body types, etc. included. These wide ranging traits can often be difficult to include in a single reference image, but distinct emotions have still certainly been captured in this series. And it will forever continue! We had so many phenomenal entries this month that it was even more difficult to choose who to feature than normal! Because of the amazing number of submissions, I decided to fit in a few more honorable mentions than normal. 😉 It should be no surprise though, considering the huge significance of villains across Poptropica. All the submissions were stunning!

November: How Do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fics, Worlds houses, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is November’s theme? November’s theme is…

FOOD!

How has this theme not been used yet? I have absolutely no idea. But anyway, I think food is an enjoyment that we can all relate to! Hmmm… snacks… *cough* And with the colder months starting for most of the world, sweet treats are becoming more and more prominent with upcoming holidays. So wouldn’t a food theme be appropriate for the occasion?

So… what exactly are things that you can submit this time around? There are a ton of options! Draw your favorite villains having a huge feast, create a wacky Poptropica inspired recipe, or even write a poem about your favorite foods showcased in islands. Heck, I’d be super duper impressed if anyone made sweet Poptropica treats in the real life kitchen! Captain Crawfish crawfish perhaps? A cookie shaped like the face of your favorite author? Oh geez, never mind, please don’t eat me…… ANYWAY, let the baking (literal or metaphorical) begin!
