Dead Air Island is a pretty cool first attempt at a Poptropica mod with a simple yet cohesive storyline about a mysterious radio signal, and even has a few mini-games, with most visual assets remixed from the original game. Welcome to Dead Air Island! You’ll find yourself on a dark and snowy mountain trail, where you’ll meet Ranger Bell in front of a notice stating that the radio station is closed until the restoration crew arrives, with no salvage authorized. She’ll also tell you that lightning closed it off twelve years ago, and that radio announcer Hal never made it home, but curiously his voice is now on the radio telling people to stay away.
Enter the Frosthollow Lodge beside the park ranger and you’ll find Dot, an elderly lady who runs the place. Beside her is a radio, which is allegedly playing Hal’s old weather broadcast.
She’ll ask if you can fix the aerial signal receivers on the roof of the lodge. Head back outside and climb up to the three antennas. Click on each one and a pop-up will appear. Click ‘Turn’ until it’s showing the strongest signal possible, then click ‘Leave it’. Do this for all three antennas.
Find Dot again back in the lodge and you’ll now be able to hear Hal’s old weather report. Dot will give you a Field Receiver, which also appears in the bottom-left corner of your screen, so you can check on the signal strength as you move around the island. She’ll also warn you not to trust “Rook’s idea of maintenance.”
Leave the lodge and head right to the next scene. Walk over to the box marked WFRH and click on it to discover that the old copper has been cut out, with a new cable running uphill. You’ll also discover a Salvage Tag, where Rook has self-authorized the copper removal.
Go right to the next scene and enter the Cable House. Click around on the bridge hoist for movable parts until you’ve set up a tight cable, which should release the safety break.
Head back outside and click on the Relay Drive. A puzzle game will appear where you’ll need to light all three relay pieces (the fixed darker squares) by turning (clicking) the other copper pieces until they all connect from the supply. See the diagram below for the solution!
Solving this will lower the bridge so you can cross over to the next scene. This also allows Ranger Bell to join you later. In the meantime, hike up the radio tower and click the box to cut the broadcast. Then keep climbing higher until you reach the WFRH studio, and enter.
You’ll meet Cal Rook, who’s surprised to find you here after the false warning he put out on air. Though you’ll call him out on his unauthorized access, he’ll say he’s trying to hear the forecast.
Click on the WFRH Source Router to pull up the studio patch panel. Here you’ll need to select a source, then a socket. Hook up the Booth Mic with the Air, then the Tape Reel with the Monitor. This switches the broadcast — and it looks like Rook hasn’t noticed!
Talk to Rook again, and he’ll speak candidly about his plans, not realizing he’s on air: he put Hal’s old weather warning back on the air to keep people away from the area, so he could steal copper from the radio site. Just as he’s done talking, Ranger Bell shows up to catch him red-handed.
Bell will ask you to switch off the transmitter. Click the switch on the Power box to ‘clear the air’, and she’ll award you the Island Medallion!
You can also pick up the Broadcast Reel of Hal’s last weather report from the WFRH Tape Deck, and although your character will say it belongs to the station, there doesn’t seem to be a way to return it.
As for Cal Rook… Ranger Bell is going to see to it that he carries all the copper he stole back up the mountain. Then they’re going to “have a rather long talk.”
Dot isn’t too fond of him, either. At least her radio is quiet now!
