So, you guys have faithfully been waiting for the next Missing Link about my giant Time Tangled theory – well, it looks like I was onto something.
If you guys have read any of the Mystery of the Map novel (which involves the origin of Poptropica), you may have realized that it basically debunked my theory – it looked like that time travel and inconsistencies have nothing to do with Poptropica’s wacky timeline. In fact, it didn’t look like there was much a timeline in the first place, what with the apparent viking island being a part of Poptropica as a whole, and not a teleported time period.
But just recently, I was looking through MotM at Octavian’s appearances, searching for an Easter egg. I found multiple Easter eggs throughout, not all about Octavian, and I’ll be posting more about those in the future, but for now, we’re talking about Octavian.
Two things to mention about the excerpts: first, Octavian saying “Because it is time.” If I have learned anything from the Flash on the CW, its to look out for double meanings in phrases. Time is mentioned indirectly multiple times throughout the book, not only by Octavian. So let’s think about the phrase as a double meaning; “Because it is time”. To preface, Mya shouts “Why are you doing this?!” while she hangs off of the balloon. So his motive for crashing the balloon is time. Now how does that fit in? Read more to find out!
Golden Watch
Hey, what’s that in his hand? A golden watch? Where have we seen that before?
If you thought Time Tangled Island, you’d be right. Look at what happens as the balloon gets close to the portal to Poptropica:
It spins, similar to Time Tangled Island’s time machine. However, it isn’t an exact copy of the machine. It doesn’t have a cover, and doesn’t have the exact design from Time Tangled. This could completely debunk the theory, but you need to keep this in mind – the illustrator, Kory Merritt, has allegedly never even played Poptropica. He wouldn’t have known all the different design features, and a golden watch would be the easiest way to describe the time machine.
Also, you don’t see the activation knob in the appearance because, seemingly deliberately, it’s hidden by Octavian’s thumb.
So did Octavian time travel? It sure seems like it (remember the “Because it is time,” bit?). The gang meets Erik the Red on the island they land on. So once again, my theory holds strong. But that’s not the end of the story. Where did he get the time machine?
Satchel
You may have noticed that along with the watch, Octavian carries a satchel throughout the book. You can easily identify it as the inventory satchel. Seriously, why else would they make it look so similar? Why would they give Octavian a satchel in the first place? It’s deliberately placed there, as well as the thumb placed where the knob would be.
Clothes
If you ever actually took a look at Octavian’s attire, you’ll notice how basic they are. It’s almost as if he’s a character just created on the start screen of Poptropica. He has a white shirt and black jacket, a black tie, and blue pants with a grey buckle. Three of the five listed there can be customized on the start, the last two very early on in the game.
Experience
One more thing about Octavian: his experience. In order to be hired as a hot air balloon pilot, he would probably need to be qualified. Guess who automatically knows how to pilot a balloon when you start the game?

Octavian’s Secret
So with all of these clues, you’ve probably already pieced together my theory: Octavian is a corrupted avatar. I feel like this is going to be the story of a lost avatar trying to get home. He was much like you, hopping from island to island via time travel and his blimp, using his satchel to collect items and his wit to solve mysteries. How did he get stranded? That’s the real mystery.
We can slightly piece together some of the story; he didn’t complete many of the islands, if we judge by his appearance. The clothes worn can be found very early in the game. He has, however, already played Time Tangled and obtained the time machine.
If you’re still skeptical, I have a question: where did he get the map? If he was an avatar, it would be a given.
But there’s one more character in the novel that needs to be touched on: Embed. Come back soon for that as well!

Yup, but I mean, if you click the “toolbox” thing at the top, it has the inventory, the settings, the map, and more.. plus the blimp.. I know it’s separate but maybe everything is grouped together, like the inventory, the map, and the blimp…Do you get what I mean?
Generally, drawn Poptropicans have limbs. 😉 Still Poptropicans. Yes, they do have beards.
And while you are right about the map thing, in a real situation, icons wouldn’t be a thing, and the map would be stored in the satchel. 😉

VERY interesting theory. Do you really think Octavian used to be.. one of us? Well, when he asked for help to get down from the blimp in the island, I instantly thought of my avatar stranded in my blimp when I first arrived at Survival Island.. I actually do think you’re right! The “obvious” satchel, the blimp experience, the ordinary clothes, and the golden watch? Hmm.. funny how the illustrator never played Poptropica (how? how? XD) I never knew that.. Back on track.. Yes, I do agree with your theory.. but um well how are you using the word “corrupted?” As in dishonest.. or.. you know.
Corrupted as in doing anything to get back home. Eobard Thawne sorta thing, from Flash. He’s from the future, and got trapped in the past.
Ahh, I see. I kind of thought it meant dishonest and someone who would do anything to get money by swindling..
Um…Who is Embed? Was his name revealed in the novels or island? And about Easter eggs and Easter eggs about ocatavian’s appearance do you mean, they resemble someone in poptropica?
Okay, I found who Embed is. But how does he know Octavian’s name? Guess there’s sure is a big mystery behind embed too!

And the other pilots of the balloons seem to be wearing their proper uniform while Octavian is not wearing a proper uniform,he is wearing a normal outfit.
And when in page 5 he says he ”finally” found it, guess he afterall really was trying to go back to poptropica.

Adsuke and I suspected that more or less when we started reading the comic. Although instead of ‘corrupted’ I’d say ‘advanced’. He looks like he was actually a part of something big. BIG. He must be experienced and and bored. In search of something INTERESTING. Which is why he’s HERE. Also; I feel he got his hands on the map by a dirty way. You want to know his secret? Find out how he got the map. He’s hiding something. OBVIOUSLY.

Obviously the way the novels show it, most of us felt that Octavian got bored or something like that so he wanted to find poptropica. But I think HP’s theory is more close! 😀
-_- Hey, give me SOME credit (I am only 5 years old!) This is just what I THINK. x thinking x PIKACHU!!!! x says x I know. All I’m saying is that EMOTIONALLY he’s corrupted. However he must be a very hands-on, rational dude. Bossy, even. He’s been there a while (He’s grown a stub). Obviously a very mesmerizing character with a shady/dark/upsetting past. Most people aren’t going to immediately trust him, but he knows that. He’s a lone ranger. He’s seen the other side of the world. He sees it for what it REALLY is. He’s a tough cookie. As for the watch? Looks like a fake. The one WE have doesn’t have a CHAIN on it. Octavian’s does. So it looks like a family heirloom. He should have given it to his kid; which he didn’t. So he has no family. Either that; or he HAD a family but they were taken away from him. So it means he lost his family. Thus opening his eyes to the big bad world. Another possibility? He just strung a necklace around the watch. But if he wanted to get out; why not use the time machine? 2 possibilities – it doesn’t work or he’s HUNGRY for adventure. PIKAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Yeah,in a way Octavian is dark and corrupted. I don’t know why I think in a way he is cool. o.o Guess I’m really weird. I have seen a more darker character than this. He’s not from an movie or a show, just from an anime and one of my favorite characters. ^-^

Why is the cartoon’s name ‘Naruto’ when they’re talking more about SASUKE?! How accurate would you say Adsuke’s prediction is, though? About Octavian, that is.

And the clothes probably don’t have much to do with it, because in the comic world of poptropica, I dont think they can copy someone else’s clothing completely off of them and wear it themselves.

I’m not entirely sure about that. With Poptropica, I’m thinking that they’re going to be breaking the fourth wall a little (they already have with Mocktropica 😛 ).
