Poptropica Portfolio: Nasan Hardcastle

Hello, everyone!

Lucky Joker here, featuring another Poptropica Portfolio! (We’ve already showcased the works of Abraham Tena, Chris Goodwin, Nate GreenwallJordan Leary and Lance Fry, so go and check those out if you haven’t already.) The featured artist this time around is former designer, illustrator, and animator for Poptropica, Nasan Hardcastle!

Nasan currently works as an illustrator for WildWorks, creating characters for Animal Jam (another popular virtual world). The work I’ll be highlighting here consists of his work for Poptropica, but you can view his non-Poptropica related artwork at his portfolio website (nasanhardcastle.com).

As stated on his LinkedIn page, Hardcastle spent almost 4 years with Poptropica (Oct 2010 – Jun 2014) creating numerous characters, creatures, and environments that we see in the game. He’s created a mixture of interior and exterior environments – quite remarkable! Check out a collection of them below:

These are some of his environmental pieces which include scenes from many islands (Twisted Thicket, Poptropolis Games, Miniquest: Blimp Adventure, Wild West, Red Dragon, Mission AtlantisCharlie and the Chocolate Factory and even the Wildfire tribe common room). Lots of detail and time goes into these pieces, I’m sure. Of course, if you want to see more illustrations like these, head on over to the archive page of his portfolio website.

In addition to his amazing environmental work, Hardcastle has created and designed many well-known and beloved characters. Here we see characters from the islands Wild West, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Game Show, Ghost Story and Monster Carnival – that’s a lot of characters!

So you see, Nasan’s done quite a lot in the duration of nearly 4 years with Poptropica, and has definitely left us with many breathtaking scenes to admire and characters to enjoy. Kudos to Hardcastle for all of his accomplishments and I hope he succeeds in all of his future endeavors.

Hope you enjoyed this look into another poptastic portfolio. I’ll talk to you soon, pop on!

Community Creations: February 2017

community-creations-logo

Why hello everyone! So, how is everyone liking the new series? As of right now, I think it’s been going pretty well. There are so many amazingly talented artists in our li’l fandom. ❤

Anyway, getting right to it, here is the February recapThis month’s theme was shipping. The featured work is not in any particular order. 😉

Top 5 Picks

The Stars, They Remind Me of You by Criaha

criaha-the-stars-they-remind-me-of-you

A very beautiful piece. Not only does it represent the LGBT community with an adorable ship between Black Widow and Criaha’s own Fearless Popper (a ship I’ve fallen in love with), but the creative starry night theme was brilliantly executed. Find her DeviantArt here.

Why Dr. Hare Shouldn’t be Cupid by ArtisticAsianBunny

artistic-asian-bunny-why-dr-hare-shouldnt-be-cupid

Just… adorable. It highlights Valentine’s Day with some much needed humor and the overall style is wonderful. This ship is super cute and I could totally see this scene happening. Find her DeviantArt here.

SD and a Narwhal (Not the official name) by Yumi-Chan-Chu

yumi-chan-chu-narwhal-sd

I may be a little biased on this one, but this is freaking adorable. I recognize that not everyone in the community is into full on shipping, so I admire this piece for showing love but not romance. The drawing and colors are great and hey I mean the Poptropican she chose is pretty cool. Find her DeviantArt here.

Movie Night by Honeybox360

honeybox-movie-night

Now this is a ship you don’t see everyday. Based on a unique Poptropica AU (which ships Speeding Spike x Ned Noodlehead), this really brings out the softer side of some of our favorite characters. The lighting is great and the piece just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Find her DeviantArt here.

First Date by BlazingAngel123

blazing-angel-first-date

Ah, the Bashful Sword x Sir Rebral ship has always been another favorite of mine. I feel like this piece perfectly sums up the emotions of what a lot of people go through on a first date. Shipping isn’t always easy, right? The dialogue and expressions are great. Find her DeviantArt here.

Honorable Mentions

And that’s it! Honestly, all of the entries were incredible, narrowing it down was tough. I can’t wait to see more of the creative talent to come! 😉

March: How do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fic, realms, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is March’s theme? March’s theme is…

NATURE!

For many of us in the northern hemisphere, spring is here, and it’s prime time to celebrate the beauty that comes with it. For ideas, a lot of Poptropica’s scenes and background art are breath-taking. I think this could not only be an inspiration for cool drawings, but also literature, realms, photo booth pics, and more.

  • Submitting: Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArt, Twitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as 3 honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as you’d like!

I will always be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. Bonus points if you make a compelling description for your piece! Remember that I’m mainly looking for something to catch my eye, so you don’t have to be any perfect artist or anything.

So what are you waiting for? Go make something! 😀

Pop 5: Ideas for Multiplayer Features

(Hey Poptropicans! This is a guest post written by TallMelonisCool, a Poptropica player in the community. In this post he’ll be sharing his ideas for more features in multiplayer rooms. Enjoy! –🐠)

pop5-multiplayer

Hey guys! So, I like popping into common rooms a lot on Poptropica to chat with, battle, and friend other Poptropicans. Although it’s pretty fun, I think there are some features that could be introduced to make multiplayer on Poptropica even better. Hopefully, the Creators can consider these ideas for the future, and I also hope you guys like these ideas. Let’s go!

1. Make it easier to view who’s currently in the multiplayer room

In order to show the options for chatting, battling, or friending someone in a multiplayer room, the player you click on has to be standing still – but sometimes, they just will not stop moving!

What they should do is have a window you can open or close that lists all the players currently in the room, as well as options next to them that say Chat / Battle / Friend. Prompting any of these actions would bring your Poptropican over to them if you aren’t already there, so they can see that you’re interested in interacting with them.

2. Show what the other player is busy with

You know when you really want to chat or battle with a Poptropican, but they’re always busy? Well, I’d love to know just what they’re busy with. Whether it’s looking through their backpack items, browsing the store, or checking out their friends’ profiles, I’d like to see the message “Sorry, I’m busy right now” changed to something that indicated what they were up to.

They could even have a feature where you can click on options for feelings (like the ones on your friend profile), so you can tell others something like, “I’m feeling happy/sad/sleepy right now.”

3. Option to choose who your chat question is directed to

Not everyone knows this, but when you chat with someone, every Poptropican in the room gets to answer the question. This is cool sometimes, but not always. It’s not so great when you just want to battle someone but they’re taking a while to answer and then a question comes up that delays them even further. Instead, you should have the option to either ask everyone the question, or just the one player you clicked on when you pressed Chat.

They should also add the option to enable/disable receiving questions if you don’t want to chat at a certain time.

4. A new mini-game

I play a lot of head-to-head game battles in the multiplayer rooms, and I really do mean a lot. So sometimes, I wish there were more options for games to play. Poptropica has only twice added more games to the collection, when Soupwords first came out in 2008 and Pathwise in 2009.

Anyway, here are some games I’d like to play multiplayer on Poptropica:

  • Chess: This game has lots of skill involved, though it tends to take longer to finish than the other games usually do. Still, we already have Sudoku, which also takes a while to finish a round.
  • Switch: Switch is currently a single-player game only, but I can easily see this game becoming a multiplayer game. It could be a timed game where the winner is whoever scores the highest by racking up the best combos.
  • Circle Tap: Imagine a whiteboard with a circle (or a dot). The goal is to click on the circle before the other player does. Once it’s clicked, it will move to a different position, and you’ll try to click on it again before the other player clicks on it, and on it goes. The first to click the circle 10 times wins!

5. More actions (emotes)

Multiplayer rooms already come with a few actions, which you can perform by pressing the emoticons on the right side. But multiplayer rooms could be even more social with some more emotes. Here are some ideas:

  • waving a hand
  • tap dance
  • fold arms
  • looking up
  • clapping
  • hands on waist
  • hands in the air
  • sit down for two seconds

Alright, that’s all I have now, guys. Thanks for reading, and if you have any comments or suggestions of your own, please leave them down below!
