Community Creations: April 2017

community-creations-logo

Hello once again everyone! Spotted Dragon here bringing you the April recap for Community Creations! This month’s theme was original characters. The featured work is not in any particular order. Be sure to check out all the featured artists! 😉

By the way, remember to tag me in some way when submitting work!!! There may have been entries I missed this time around because I didn’t see some of them.

No clue what’s going on? Go see our intro post.

Top 5 Picks

Adventure Awaits by GoldenFox2019

GoldenFox2019 - Adventure Awaits

These bright, beautiful colors really make this piece pop (pun intended). The dramatic sunset gives off a real sense of adventure, something that Poptropica is no stranger to. It also features Blue Raptor, the artist’s OC of course, who has a great yet simple design. And we can’t forget the iconic blimp! Find their DeviantArt here.

The Current PHB Authors by IceSquared

IceSquared - The Current PHB Popsonas

A classy lineup that sadly isn’t incredibly accurate anymore. Still, this is a perfect way to permanently represent the early 2017 PHB OC’s. I may be biased in choosing this piece, but I mean hey, every great artist needs a great muse or two, right? Despite my persuaded opinion, this drawing is genuinely well made and does a great job expressing the emotion in each figure. Find their DeviantArt here.

Poprocks – The Villains by SuperFlameKitty

SuperFlameKitty aka Bronze Dragon - Poprocks The Villains

This demonstrates a totally unique art style that really catches the eye. The dark background really makes the bright (yet still eerily dark) figures stand out. Each of these OC’s even has a different island they are the villain of, which you can learn more about here. The detail in design as well as the original backstories really make this piece deserve a feature. Find their DeviantArt (complete with dark humor) here.

So! Many! OC’s! by Criaha

Criaha - So Many OC's

Who can pick just one OC when you have so many amazing characters to choose from? Just one glance at this drawing and you can tell that the artist spent lots of time and effort in it. With over 60 unique characters, each one has a different identity filled with detail. Find their DeviantArt here.

Balloon Ride by BeanSkelly aka Dana Kelly

BeanSkelly aka DanaKelly - Balloon Ride

A thrilling scene with great emotion and movement. The Poptropica Comics style matches very well with the environment and the weather really makes you think about what it would really be like in a blimp all the time. All the OC’s look delightful and the colors really add to the mood. Find their DeviantArt here and here.

Honorable Mentions

This has got to be one of the most difficult months for me yet because there were so many breath-taking creations. All your Poptropicans are so cool!!! No matter if you made it into this post or not, I hope that you participate in May! 😉

May: How do I Participate?

Community Creations is a cool series for anyone in the Poptropica community to join in on. To sum up what it’s about, it’s basically a chance to show off your artwork, creepy fan-fic, realms, costumes, and anything else that pops into your mind.

If we really like the piece you submit, we will feature it here on the PHB! As long as it relates to that month’s theme. So what is May’s theme? May’s theme is…

Fairy Tales and Myths!

Fairy tales and myths are constantly inspiring modern day stories and I think it’s really cool that so many plots and lessons have been kept up for so long. Potpropica is no exception to this passing of folklore, as we see in many islands regarding Greek mythology, vampires, ghosts, etc. So what better time than now to let these fables inspire our art as well?

You can create things relating to ancient mythology, Grimm fairy tales, religious/cultural stories, fictitious creatures, etc. That means Gods/Goddesses, vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, and much, much more. The only limits are your imagination and how you can relate all these ideas to Poptropica!

Remember that you can submit not only drawings, but literature, costumes, etc. as well. And the more detail/backstory, the better! 😉

  • Submitting: Comment below with a link to whatever you’ve created OR share it with me (SydVC aka Spotted Dragon) on DeviantArt, Twitter, or Discord.
  • Results: I will feature 5 of the submissions as well as 3 honorable mentions.
  • Limitations: Nothing NSFW, and make sure you relate to the theme.
  • Due Date: I will take any entries before the end of this month. Submit as many things as you’d like!

I will always be sure to let you know I have seen your creation. Bonus points if you make a compelling description for your piece! I’m mainly looking for something to catch my eye, so you don’t have to be any perfect artist or anything.

So what are you waiting for? Go make something! 😀

  1. AI!! I was gonna enter mine, but I finally finished yesterday and I’m not ON Sundays! Oh well, I brought this apon myself. But this next one… *rubs hands together* Hoo hoo hoo… It’s going down….

  2. Oh my gosh, I can’t thank you enough for putting mine on there, it means so much to me! Time to get started on the next one!

  3. I have a huge complaint here. Why is it that only Da Vincis win this contest, when it’s about the concept of the piece, not how great the people are at drawing?? Why is it that Criaha, who is so freaking good at art, unlike some of us, manages to win every single Community Creations?? And also, why is it that basically every artwork that has Spotted Dragon in it, and fits the theme (however haphazardly, like some piece I could mention right here) always wins each round?? This is a competition, of sorts, however friendly you may like to delude yourself so. Can you name any fair competition series, of any sort, where the same person gets to win every round and every single piece of said judge wins? The assessing by SD is completely inaccurate and extremely biased. No offence, but this series by the PHB needs help.

    1. Welp, I’m definitely not gonna deny your point. This series, like any other, totally needs to grow and fix some dents. I actually really appreciate the feedback, since Community Creations is very important to me at the moment. 🙂

That being said, any event that showcases art is going to be partially based on skill. And any judge is going to be biased (which I have even said in my posts). There’s no doubt that I’m going to like some pieces more than others, but I do make sure that each feature fits the theme and I have made an effort to show a little variety in the artists I show (though I am well aware that there are often repeats). I’m not denying the fact that Community Creations is like a loose competition. Anything that only allows for a certain number of “winners” could be considered as such. 😦

My picks often come down to tough choices, because I don’t have tons upon tons of entries to choose from. I have tried to emphasize the variety of submissions that can be entered, because it’s not just visual art, but I still just get drawings for the most part. Plus, many people don’t notify me when they make something for the series, which is a problem. I’ve actually started to try to base a lot of my choices on how much effort was put into a piece, thus the more carefully made/detailed drawings tend to get picked. These entries also usually come with big descriptions, which highly influences my decision. Thankfully, there is no big award for “winning,” besides a little shoutout, so it is just suppose to be friendly. Additionally, I do have honorable mentions for a reason. 😛

I apologize if my monthly assessments seem unjust, I really do. Do you have any suggestions on how I could improve the series? Ideas would help me a lot more than simple criticism, because with ideas I can learn from my mistakes. I’m not perfect and we all have different opinions, so do give me your thoughts! Should I get other PHB authors to help judge? I can’t avoid featuring the same person more than once, but I do want to bring more diversity to the posts. Do you have suggestions on how more people can participate? I want to address these issues as best I can without simply “giving a participation trophy” to everyone. 😉
