POPCORN, the PHB magazine: Spring 2016 issue!

Hey Poptropicans, the butter is back!šŸ˜€

As you may recall from our last POPCORN announcement, our PHB magazines are now being published seasonally. The spring 2016 issue, #30Ā of ourĀ Poptropica fanĀ magazine,Ā is now ready for viewing.Ā Check outĀ the springĀ 2016Ā issue now!Ā (Or download it to read offline!)

These issues are still available as downloadable PDFs, but you may notice a few small stylistic changes ā€“ most notably, the Featured Poptropican on the cover! In the past, Iā€™ve just used my (Slanted Fishā€™s) Poptropican, but thatā€™s boring after a while. This seasonā€™s issue featuresĀ Cobalt Spinner, our newest PHB author and longtime Poptropican (you can read his story here). A couple of selected artworks in this issue are of his characterā€™s impeccable design.

Henceforth, like many magazines,Ā each new cover will feature a different Poptropican from the community! They will be selected by me, the editor of this magazine, on the grounds that this Poptropican has had a significant role in the community, preferably with some connection to the issue of the magazine they are featured on. Please understand that there are manyĀ wonderful individuals out there, far more than there are issues of The POPCORN, so donā€™t take it personallyĀ if you arenā€™t featured on the cover. You can have your chance to be featured within the magazine by submitting stories, art, and more to our subreddit and DeviantArt!

Which brings us to another point of change: in the past, we have pretty much admitted any work that was sent to us into the magazine. Sometimes, however, this would make theĀ magazines ratherĀ long, and the quality of work varied. In order to be more consistent with length and quality, we are now limiting the amount of work that makes the final cut. Again, please donā€™t take it too hard if your work isnā€™t chosen ā€“ with ourĀ subreddit and DeviantArtĀ sharing platforms, it is easier than ever to have your work publicized, even if it doesnā€™t make it into the magazine.

Thereā€™s anotherĀ new section as well:Ā Fansite Spotlight! Weā€™ll be using The POPCORN to highlight notable works that other Poptropicans in this community are doing, to help them reach a wider audience for all the good work theyā€™re up to. This spotlight isnā€™t necessarily limited to fansites, and mayĀ include other projects as well.Ā Youā€™ll have to peek into this issue to see whereĀ the first spotlight shines!

Anyway, enjoy this spring issue of The POPCORN! To read past issues, check out the PHBā€™s Magazines page. Stay popping, Poptropicans! šŸ šŸ

    1. Thanks! šŸ˜€ I’d prefer to see entries on Reddit (which can probably take more formats and can be used to link elsewhere on the web if you’ve already posted your piece somewhere), but I’ll also browse DeviantArt for possible artworks to choose from. The links for these are on the last page of the Popcorn (as well as this post). Messages on Discord are less likely to be remembered when it comes time to put the next magazine together. šŸ˜›

  1. Cool! I wish I was as good an artist as the people who got their entries in… Well, maybe someday…

  2. Great magazine, guys! There’s some amazing submissions. šŸ™‚ And congrats to TC for appearing on the Fansite Spotlight, and to Spencer for being the Featured Poptropican! Happy for you guys!

    1. As it says in this post, “In order to be more consistent with length and quality, we are now limiting the amount of work that makes the final cut.” We still appreciate your work whether or not we choose to include it, and you are welcome to post it on our subreddit and/or DeviantArt!

  3. This issue was GREAT! It has to be one of the best! And by one of the best I mean that this issue and the issue featuring my entry (hehe…) are tied for first on the awesomeness scale :P!

      1. No problem! Sorry Green Star couldn’t comment on this post (She reads the blog but she is not the most frequent commenter) but she told me to tell you thank you and that she is looking forward to the next issue of The Popcorn!

    1. The original name for the magazine was The Poptropican’s 911, suggested by a PHB reader and voted on by other readers. We stopped publishing after about a year, then a few years later decided to bring it back. With the re-introduction, we decided to give it a new name, which was picked by a few of the PHB staff. We chose “Popcorn” because it sounds delicious AND starts with “Pop”, like Poptropica. Good question! šŸ˜€

  4. I loved this issue, especially MissEligon’s “Explore, Collect, Compete.” That was really good. I don’t know how she had the patience to do something like that, but it was definitely worth it.

  5. Kudos to the artwork (even yours, SF, that was like the second best, beaten by the JennLikesPie girl or whoever it was.) and the stories (Marshmallow, I read the prologue and the first chapter, GENIUS.) and all the people that got their stuff in. And congrats on being the cover photo, Cobalt. (Now to work hard on The Adventures of Trusty Bear.)

    1. Haha, thanks. Quite a few other artists (from our DeviantArt and PHC on Discord) have done art of Cobalt recently as well, but I was trying to keep the issue from being too lengthy. Happy writing on The Adventures of Trusty Bear! šŸ™‚
