Hi Gs,

It’s been a while since I’ve actually sat down and wrote a formal post. Let’s face it – I’ve been a bit neglectful. The PHB plays a big part in my popularity (while it may not be huge) concerning other facets of my online persona. I’ve met some of my best friends here, influenced tons of people.. and for the past few months I’ve been sort of lazy. Last year, today, I posted my first post on the Poptropica Help Blog. It was entitled “Where the Wild One Is“. Here it is –

Hi Gs (Guys, girls, and gorillas)!

Hopefully, you will read to the end of this post; I want you to be ready for what will soon hit this blog — I am HPuterpop;awesomeness unleashed.

I’ve been playing Poptropica since 2007; that’s the year Poptropica started!  I am a kid who loves to read, write, edit, and anything else involving the word “creative”.  I will try to serve you, the viewer, with lightning fast updates, Poptropica memoirs, and reviews! 😀

Why are you here, you ask?  I’m the newest addition to the PHB.  You could call me a Renaissance kid, or a Poptropica fanatic… anyway, whatever you call me, I’m so excited to be a part of the Poptropica Help Blog legend. I used to comment here when I was a (smaller) kid.  I went by the name “Puterpop” and had a big mouth.

Now, a little about me…  I draw all the time, and I do it digitally.  I will create art for anyone who asks, and am always looking for jobs.  I also write a good bit, and not only for blogging.  Mister Monster is my main site, where I post most of my material.  I’ll put links at the bottom of the post for more of HP goodness! And I’ll have to explain my name some other time.

You can friend my main accounts — “puterpop”, “puterpoptropica”, and “partypoppa”

It’s amazing for me to look back and think that one year ago, that was my very best that I could do. The title alone took days to come up with.

HPoverview

I had a lot of enthusiasm back then, and I said that the posts would never stop.. but they sort of have. The last time I posted was about 20 days ago. It’s not that I’ve lost interest in the community or the lore of Poptropica – it’s the game itself. I love Poptropica, but let’s face the facts – it’s lost a sense of wholeness. Something seems strange. The game development isn’t like it used to be. Poptropica is broken.

I’ve tried to convince myself that it wasn’t true in the past, time and time again Poptropica proves that it’s not going to get any better. It’s been over a year that Poptropica’s new SUI update came out. It was in “beta” then.. but with the quality of things it sure feels like it’s still in beta now. The artwork is still there, the story is still there, but the game development has gone down hill.

And don’t get me started with the social media efforts. I will admit that Poptropica is making great strides in behind the scenes content, but they’re getting too big for their britches. Their game isn’t working. Graphical issues, plain old lazy platforming, and game crashes are all becoming a regular occurrence.

So what do you think? Do you agree about the way Poptropica is heading? Tell me in the comments, and please forgive me for being so neglectful with the community. I’ll see you guys in the next post. I can’t promise anything crazy. 🙂

TAFN.

  1. I disagree with you greatly, HP. Poptropica has changed a lot, it’s true, but change isn’t objectively good or bad. People react differently to change.

I personally hated the SUIs at first. But eventually, I just forced myself to get over it. Because Poptropica is still trying its best: glitches are being fixed, nobody liked episodes so they’re going back to full islands, etc. The important part, the story, is still quality. In general it’s not exactly “better,” nor is it “worse.”

So what I’m trying to say is, it’s not Poptropica’s fault that *you* don’t like their changes. It’s your problem. Sorry if that’s a little harsh.

  2. Congrats on a year here man, that’s amazing. I agree though. Aside from the horribleness of my laptop, I’ve just can’t play much anymore. It gives me a headache at this point. Sure the sound is cool. The big screen is fun, but at a cost.

And I know you’ve made a lot of posts but I mean it when I say this: it’s your best and most relatable yet.

  3. SUIs and their glitches and lag are what made me temporarily leave the community. The episodic islands aren’t as good as the new ones (although I do like Poptropicon). Survival gets exciting only in the 3rd and 4th episode, and the last one is too easy. Mission Atlantis is too much of a mix of SOS and Virus Hunter for me,and Arabian Nights….well,it’s too early for me to decide that.

My opinion? They should only make 2 changes to the SUI and the episodic island system:

    1. Make it so that the SUIs have an option to play in the old style for less lag for users with older computers;and

    2. When the episodic islands have all episodes released, they should make it a full island. With this, where an ‘episode’ ended, your game will automatically go to the start of the episode and automatically save there.

  4. Hey, HP.
I agree with you. It’s sad, really. Poptropica used to be such a big part of my life, simply playing, working on the PTFP, writing PopU…
But now I feel like I have no motivation. I don’t know if I’m just growing old and aging out of Poptropica, but ever since the SUI’s, I haven’t really wanted to play Poptropica like I used to. They’re too glitchy; too fancy.
As such, I’ve never played an episodic island, but frankly to me it just feels like an excuse for the creators to release tiny snippets of an island at a time instead of regularly giving us full islands…
I really wish they would give us the option of playing the original version instead of the SUI’s. Even if only members got this option, I would be more than happy to buy membership to get back into my childhood nostalgia.
I wouldn’t go so far as to call it broken, though. Usually in the gaming context, being called “broken” is the worst curse a game can receive, and Poptropica is far from worthy of that. But I know what you’re talking about.
TL;DR: I miss the olden days of Poptropica.

  5. I agree 100% Jeff Kinney and the other Poptropica crew and cast has been stupid wth their islands . I like the islands when they were regular and NOT the SUI or Episotic style even Thinknoodles didn’t like the Survival or Mission Atlantis because there was no interacting.
    Have a good day

  6. hi hp.
I agree with you too. i HATE the SUI islands because they not are the real poptropica.
I know this is new, is good, but i still dont like it.Have a lot of glitches, and that make me leave poptropica for a while. I don´t know if i still can playing this poptropica of today.

  7. I don’t really have too much of problem with the SUIs. Jeff Heim’s music is cool, the stories are still there (although Survival’s 5-episode format way way too long) ( but out of the episodics, I liked Survival 3, 4 and 5 and PoptropiCon, as well as Arabian Nights’s first episode), and the glitches haven’t been too much of a problem for me (except sometimes it does). However, there is something else that is bothering me, in the future…

All those sponsored islands that are coming up.

The next island is going to be about a comic Im not big on and don’t really care about, ANOTHER Wimpy Kid island (seriously? ._. ) and Timmy Failure, another thing I don’t really care about. Maybe it’s the fact that… Maybe I am growing a bit too old, yet I still really like the islands that are either original or semi-original (such as Arabian Nights or Mythology). Also the advertising has changed. I’m scared of advertising’s impact on Poptropica’s future, and it’s kinda turning me off…

    1. yeah, i still like poptropicon, but i dont like survival and the others.
I´M sure that of sponsored islands make me very not interested anymore on poptropica.
that is a cool game or a site who do ads all the time? I ask to you, Jeff.
      What you wanna do?

  8. happy 1 year anniversary HP and can you draw me I was waiting for another post by you to say it on

  9. oh if you do draw me my usernames kurtbushg I want it to say : red spider then on another line : the PHB’s # 1 fan

  10. I agree, I used to go on Poptropica all the time, now its like once every 2 weeks. It definitely has changed recently, so newer members may like it but those who have been playing for a long time probably don’t

  11. Well, I only partly agree. Yes, Poptropica has changed… a lot… but I still love it. SUIs took a while to get used to, but I personally like them. Sure, I miss the classics, but I can deal with that. While I don’t like episodes, Poptropica is still a HUGE part of my life that I don’t want to give up. If I didn’t blog, I have no idea what my life would be like. Poptropica sure has changed, but I think a hint of the original is still around.

  12. Congrats on a year here, HP! And I’m not sure Poptropica is broken, necessarily – but they are definitely growing in several different directions (comics, mobile apps, social media, Land), which isn’t a bad thing, but having so many projects going on can only be good if done right. They seem to be making a lot of progress on those fronts, but with SUIs, I have seen a lot more comments on this blog about various glitches (and not the good kind) ever since they’ve released islands with bigger screens and sound.

There are developers working hard on squashing those bugs all the time, and Poptropica support is usually pretty responsive (plus they have stepped up their efforts to connect with players through social media) – but when those SUIs are released with a lot more bugs than the classic islands ever would’ve had upon a public release, it does make SUIs (or even Poptropica itself) look bad.

However, with all the new directions they’ve taken, some of which are pretty cool (like Land) – they’d have to go a lot more downhill before I’d call the game “broken”. 🙂

      1. Aw :c I liked it. Maybe you’ll start up another in WordPress format in the future? Near future? Really soon? ;p

  13. I definitely wouldn’t say Poptropica is broken. More or less, different. Poptropica hasn’t really changed all for the bad; in fact, they’re being influenced by the viewers more than ever. Sometimes I feel the same way, but just recently (about a week ago), I realized that it’s not because Poptropica’s changed that makes it feel different, but because there’s not much to strive for anymore. When there weren’t SUI’s, we wanted sound, we wanted Monster Carnival Island, we wanted music, we wanted more frequent islands, we wanted to build our own islands (the only thing we didn’t want in the beta was the Common Room cursor)… And they gave it to us, which isn’t a bad thing…at all. Sure, they may have gone the wrong way with it sometimes, but it’s what we wanted. Now we want the old back because we remember our enthusiasm when we had it. When you think about it, Poptropica’s gotten a lot more smooth than it was before, there’s as much detail, and story lines are a little more complex, coming in islands and all. I can’t imagine how they get the music done. Of course, this comes with a price. Sure, more glitches, it freezes, and slows down sometimes; it’s a bit “overdone.” But it’s what we wanted, or, at least, most of us. After realizing this, I became interested in the game again, and excited of the thought of playing Poptropica. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me.

  14. Well, Poptropica has defiantly changed and there’s nothing you can do. But it’s not all bad. Poptropicon is awesome. They did a good job with the music, even though they used music from other islands to put in new islands. But the glitches are terrible. Once I had to restart the whole computer. SUIs can be annoying but good at the same time. I still play Poptropica, but not as much. I hope they don’t do anything to bad to Poptropica that will make it horrible.
